You’re the best teacher I’ve ever experienced! Not just art teacher- you’re an amazing teacher period! The encouragement, simplification.. all of it! You’re my fav! ❤
I think "work through the ugly" is a brilliant concept. That's something I only recently started to do. Before, I'd just give up. But then there's no learning, or chance to grow and make something really good. This is one reason why you're an excellent teacher.
Yep ... self talk is good! I do it when gardening, cooking, etc.! Love these sessions! I will try the ball point for sketching! Thank you so much for all the time you and the crew put into these videos!
Here on replay from Georgia, at 4:30 am, Monday. This is my quiet peaceful yet fun time with and because of you! You're an incredible teacher and facilitator! Thanks!!
Hiya, watching from Queensland Australia, on reply it's the 12th July 2023. I have subscribed to your channel. I'm a absolute beginner, and watching you makes me feel like I can paint watercolour and sketch. You have given me the confidence to give it a try and keep on trying turning the trying into practice. I thank God for leading me to your channel on UA-cam. God bless you in all you do. Xxxooo
You are an amazing teacher. I am a beginner in my retirement. I'll never be an artist but it brings me great joy to paint, and toss them in the trash even!
Hello Kristy, I just found you a couple of days ago. I'm newish to watercolors but I've been painting with acrylics for years. I've had the supplies & desire to learn watercolors for years & figured I'd know when the time was right. About a month ago I found a big, vintage, cloth covered, hardcover book of watercolor paper, with special sheets dividing each page & I knew it was time. So I've been practicing every day since & a friend found a book of art paper at a vintage shop too now so she's really getting excited about her new art journey. She's a complete beginner so I introduced her to your videos because you do a fabulous job of breaking things down into bite sized pieces that make it possible for anyone to believe they just might be able to join the world of art & color & the joy of creating after all. In other words, what you are sharing is wonderfully inspiring. Thank you. J from Canada.
Here on replay! Love this topic. I started a drawing class to build my confidence and find shapes and values in my watercolour. Discovered I love it too
My dad passed away on the 21st of August , and it was his 97th birthday as well. Love that this calendar starts from the 21st. And love you and your inspiring words and videos. Thank you
I just had a ah ha moment. When I first started, I traced EVERYTHING……Did a lot of paintings and low and behold, one day I realized that I hadn’t traced for awhile…that I was sketching in…I truly had not noticed the transition. I’m thinking that with enough “ practice” by painting, my mind muscle had awoken and I recognized the shapes…does that make sense??
Hi Kristy! I'm on replay from my vacation in Ouachita National Forest, Arkansas. Loved your Lesson 3 that I went through earlier today! Am watching through your lessons first before going back to work along with you. Your enthusiasm and spirit just brighten my day!
painting a flower in miniture(one of those stonehenge teeny pads of sample papers) while I'm listening/watching you today! I heart you so much and I watch you way more than I could comment about because I watch so much. I'm grateful for you, Kristy and the big 'ol crush you've shared with me on watercolor. I hope to do something like what you do someday and btw... I flipping LOVE your brushes! God bless and be with you and your family.
Just started watching the replay and loving it. When it comes to sketching I don't think it is mandatory. For me by sketching my subject it allows me to connect more with my subject. Occasionally I will trace out of laziness and miss out on the connection. Also drawing is great therapy for my brain. It creates a spark. I definitely encourage drawing and sketching because I don't want anyone to miss out!
Hi from UK - I was originally taught I didn’t have to learn to draw in order to paint & at the time I had no interest in learning this skill. However recently I have been sketching & I love the effects & the difference it has made to my art. Painting is still my passion but i’m pleased I can draw a little as well. Enjoy & do what you love. Ty Kristy for all the cool info 🧡💚💜
High and Amen sister, I don't like coffee either. I tell my husband all the time that is gross and yuck. I like the idea of coffee and all the fancy drink names but hate the smell and taste. Not to offend you find others in the same boat. I have been a bit new to your channel for the last few months and love everything especially the encouragement of you got to paint the ugly!! Your a hoot and I'm learning and having a great time implementing a touch of your style to my art work. Just got your paint palette a few days ago and so far loving it!! Thanks for all yours and your teama hard work and sharing all your knowledge for free for all us visual learner and who can't afford to or never been exposed to art lessons before! I'm having some super great late night painting party with you while my hubs in on night shift! As a kids I always thought if someone had to teach you art then you were a natural real artist but thanks to you and other youtubers I'm finding that was crazy thinking and I should've looked into art school but all in the good Lord timing!! Love to you!
How to sketch a flower now makes sense. I had never understood putting an oval where I do not see an oval! It is more like locating where shapes are, not the actual shape. Then you refine! I was trying to get the actual shape from the start!!!! Old way was frustrating;new way is fun!
When I was a kid my downstairs neighbor gifted me a huge Disney Drawing/Coloring Book. They had grids to redraw Mickey, Pluto etc. That same year my mom bought ‘Let’s draw animals’ from Ann H. Davidow. Those two books fostered my love of drawing. Not that it amounted to much later on (Art is not a viable job choice according to my parents back then). I rediscovered my love for doodling, drawing, painting & writing after having my kids. First I got into Acrylics but the past 4 years or so I switched over to watercolor and I still love it. Sketching helps me when I want to paint something. I tend to get the proportions wrong if I go freestyle, I seem to run out of space a lot 😆. For the longest time I was a color in the lines kinda gal. Watching you and some other artists, I’m now moving away from that. Thank you for sharing all your experiences and tips with us! This helps so much!!
I just got your Free Spirited Watercolors book today. Then of course I got my eyes dilated a couple of hours later.🤨 But I know I'm going to love it from what I've seen already!
Watching on replay. I love your videos. I'm here after retiring to pick up where I left off in college (life happened). Looking forward to learning more and picking your brain. This year I'm making Christmas gifts in watercolor. It's something to last more than a shirt, scarf, etc. I ordered your spiral bound book and can't wait to get started and back into Art For Joy Sake!
Here on replay! Recently was inspired by a beech tree branch to try a sketch. I was amazed that I just knew how to do it! To date it’s my favorite sketch! I’m so proud, but I’m afraid to paint it for fear I’ll ruin it!
Favourite drawing tool - I love mechanical pencils but they snap so easy with the skinny leads. I bought one off of Temu that has leads that are 2mm wide, and there's a sharpener in the end to sharpen them to a super sharp point. I freakin' LOVE it. It is the very best most favourite drawing tool I now have for sketching.
I’m watching the replay from the Missouri Ozarks, and yes. I think a solid grasp of drawing and sketching is necessary to become adept in all painting media: watercolor, acrylics, oils and of course, pastels. You can be a decent basic watercolorist without sketching, but to move on, grow and become an accomplished watercolor artist you need to have sketching in your toolbox. (Just my opinion.) I think too many people have already decided they can’t draw. But they can learn if they try!
Hey Kristy and team! Hong Kong in the house! I just found this series and I'm so glad I did. I feel really inspired to paint again and I just love your attitude...where do I find friends like you??? Thank you for taking so much time and energy to produce these live videos! Side note: my guess about the puffer fish is that its right eye, from the fish's perspective, could be slightly higher than the left eye...that's how you'd fall in love with that cutie
Watching on replay. I started a children’s book that I will eventually creat the illustration for; my mom is my editor. I haven’t worked on it in ages though. My plan Elena’s to illustrate after it was finished, but you’ve inspired me to get out there and start drawing again; hoping that doing that will help the story progress.
Watching replay and hello Kristy, Kelly and Adam! Loving this series, learning so much from it. Thank you 🙏! Sketching is definitely not my joy but will start trying it again…old art wounds.😒
Betty Edward's book DRAWING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BRAIN--- was one of the very first book which helped me immensely on my journey in learning to sketch... I love that book...
Did Live and now on Replay. Thank you All, for your dedication, support and joy... And for this week long tutorial! My husband has figured it out, don't talk to be while Kristy is Live. I think sketching is helpful, and I am a minimalist doing mostly contour sketching. Sketching helps me visually see and breakdown the shape of everything. Thank you again, this has been a big fun week!
Me again lol. I'm like a bad penny but in a good way 😁 I love that you are teaching a more positive approach to self critique. I walk away often lol. I try to look at it without emotion and with more logic. I like to remind myself that lives are not in danger after all lol.
Chasing joy brush pens I love these! Would definitely choose the rainbow art, but why not print both? OMG these are a game change, would love to see your tutorial/ give these a try Thanks Kristy.
I was only able to watch a few minutes of the live but I’m catching the replay now. I’m hoping to better my sketching to improve my perspective but we will see. Sometimes it’s hard not to be too self critical so I have an area over my workspace (the kitchen table) where I hang up something I am happy with or proud of even if it’s just a few brushstrokes on a practice sheet. Just something to remind me that I tweak the nose of self doubt
I have been drawing and painting since I was five. I love sketching out before I paint. It brings to life the painting in my mind before I start painting! Hope that makes sense 🤣
Help. A couple of links are not working, I am looking for the brushes and the pen. Also, have you released the watercolor markers? I am so glad I found you.
Watching the replay and really enjoyed it. While technically not sketching, I wish you had also added the technique of drawing in ink over watercolor. (Either abstractly or to enhance the painting.) I think it can often improve a painting, especially one that has gone off the rails. Or take work in an entirely new direction.
Just finished watching the live and now I'm watching 👀 the REPLAY.... . . I don't drink coffee, and don't think I could have a cup of tea next to me when painting because I'ld think I would dip my paint brush in it 😅
I think sketching is helpful to get a better composition, or one you like, but the intrigue comes with trying to get the water and color to react in a way to produce something you want or like rather than just evenly mix to produce a liquid color on paper.
I do worse than just talk myself, what do is just crazy, talk, laugh, sing, cry, if I could scream I probably would do that as well, like I said, just crazy! :)
You’re the best teacher I’ve ever experienced! Not just art teacher- you’re an amazing teacher period! The encouragement, simplification.. all of it! You’re my fav! ❤

Im watching on the replay from Florida. Yes, I think you need to know how to sketch. Thank you for the video!!
Kristy, I am new to watercolor and I just love your passion and your down to earth swag, I am so happy I found you 💖💖💖💖
Thanks for being here!
Yep ... self talk is good! I do it when gardening, cooking, etc.! Love these sessions! I will try the ball point for sketching! Thank you so much for all the time you and the crew put into these videos!
Truly our pleasure!
Here on replay from Georgia, at 4:30 am, Monday. This is my quiet peaceful yet fun time with and because of you! You're an incredible teacher and facilitator! Thanks!!

Here on replay! Been working through all of these as I can. Thank you!
I talk to myself all the time especially when painting. Relatable!

Love love hearing this :)
My dad passed away on the 21st of August , and it was his 97th birthday as well. Love that this calendar starts from the 21st. And love you and your inspiring words and videos. Thank you

Thanks so much, I have been following drawing and painting along with you. I did like your little fat fish, the colour while you were laying it down.
Just started watching the replay and loving it. When it comes to sketching I don't think it is mandatory. For me by sketching my subject it allows me to connect more with my subject. Ahhhh connection such a good point for sketching!
@@KristyRice it always helps me!
I love the rainbow and the cactus.
Yes, I think it is very important and the foundation of all great art.
I’d love to see more landscape tutorials please.
Nooooo problem!
I love you! You have the best personality!!! Just cut it out!!! I’m gonna do it!!!
I painted the bird when you Did this DEMO. AN EVERYONE SAID THE PICTURE WAS BEAUTIFUL ❤

Your crazy heron is a surprise. Love the sketching lesson I've learned heaps. Motivated to find some mod animals to try now xx
Replay!! I love free style creative leaning. Im glade you love to teach 🤩🙌🤩🙌🙌 I got your brushes!!
Yay! Thank you!
I missed the live.. but I’m glad I have the replay….. thank you!
You are so welcome

I have done art for over 50 years an i do think it is good at times. I have just started doing some lately.❤

I’m on replay from Tampa, Florida. I love all of your videos.
Thank you!
I just love Pressia Dragon Lift, 🐲 what a mental aid to remember the technique 😊
Hi from Australia, watching from replay.
Missed the live watching the replay. Hi Kristy, Kelly and Welcome back Adam. With watercolor you have to sketch with oil I draw with paint.
I adore drawing with paint too!
Watching replay. Love you so much and am so happy to have found you!!
So happy you’re here!
lol the press dragon was SO CUTE!
Here on replay from Indiana & yes sketching shows more talent to me. #goals
Favorite sketching tool? Silverpoint!! Also graphite, Mitsubishi Uni pencils are my favorite.
Awesome!
I just got your Free Spirited Watercolors book today. Then of course I got my eyes dilated a couple of hours later.🤨 But I know I'm going to love it from what I've seen already!
Still with you….watching repeat cast to the tv. Great video.
Watching replay. I think it's not required but greatly helps.
:)
Watching on the replay. I think it’s a good idea to learn to sketch. There’s some things I really struggle with.
Lol I know I'm late, but enjoying the moment. Rome is where you got your pencils and you now source them from Turkey. Xx
Thanx to you I have so much more joy to paint and let my perfectionism (is that the right word?) go.. and just paint… thank you!
You are so welcome!

Scan it. Reprint on watercolor paper! No fear!

Team replay! I really like the watercolor pattern bag😊
Hi Kristie, I’m here now. Had to be away during your live event and REALLY MISSD IT! You have really made me a covert to good teaching!
I'm so glad!
Yellow from Kelowna Canada! No sketching not required. I got better at it because I started painting. But not required!
Sketching is a very helpful tool when using water colours, I am ready to learn!
Wonderful!

You're the best!
Love your heron! Thanks for another great art class!
Thanks for watching!
This cracked me right on up. Dragon and all.
I use the same pens and pencils. Also use for portraits and white ink. Love all your videos. All helpful. You are a great teacher
Thanks so much!
So beautiful, love your florals! ❤

I like the floral bag best!
Here on replay. Thank you
Thank you!
Yes, sketching is not required but more beneficial if you learn it
Í talk to myself all the time. and I love to listen to you
team replay!!! and yes coffee is gross! tea all the way!
Watching replay and hello Kristy, Kelly and Adam! Loving this series, learning so much from it. Thank you 🙏! Sketching is definitely not my joy but will start trying it again…old art wounds.😒

No, sketching is not required but I'm finding it gives my watercolor a new dimension.
Absolutely!
I'm here in Australia on replay - where's my coffee? 😃
Here on replay.
Sketching along with the replay😊
Wahoo I'm soooo glad!
I like the plaid bag a little better than the cactus, only because the colors make it look like a Christmas design.
I find ink and wash are the ones I enjoy the most. Sometimes I paint then go in with the pen
Me again lol. I'm like a bad penny but in a good way 😁 I love that you are teaching a more positive approach to self critique. I walk away often lol. I try to look at it without emotion and with more logic. I like to remind myself that lives are not in danger after all lol.

I love these!
Would definitely choose the rainbow art, but why not print both?

No I think it it's nice to be able to do it but it makes things easier!
Here on replay!
I was only able to watch a few minutes of the live but I’m catching the replay now. I’m hoping to better my sketching to improve my perspective but we will see. Just something to remind me that I tweak the nose of self doubt
Love that! Reminder, no matter how small they are of something you're proud of are incredibly motivating!
I have been drawing and painting since I was five. I love sketching out before I paint. It brings to life the painting in my mind before I start painting! Hope that makes sense 🤣
Well said! Makes soooo much sense!
Team replay! 👍 I’ve been doing more sketching as a way to try to identify my own vision.
Watching replay from Philippines
I love ❤your art work an you or outstanding
Here on replay
Team replay! I don't feel sketching is necessary but is usually helpful.
Totally agree!
❤Hi Amber from Florida….not required but it is so helpful I do more abstract but have never sketched in watercolor
Just finished watching the live and now I'm watching 👀 the REPLAY.... . . I don't drink coffee, and don't think I could have a cup of tea next to me when painting because I'ld think I would dip my paint brush in it 😅
That is dedication!! XO
Hi from Arizona and a sweaty old woman 👍🏼🫶🏼 no to being sketchy… I’m a doodler and love my doodles.
I think sketching is helpful to get a better composition, or one you like, but the intrigue comes with trying to get the water and color to react in a way to produce something you want or like rather than just evenly mix to produce a liquid color on paper.
yes yes yes!
How can I gat one of the Lyra pencils? That is amazing!!! I need one!
I do worse than just talk myself, what do is just crazy, talk, laugh, sing, cry, if I could scream I probably would do that as well, like I said, just crazy! :)
i guess practice is the key…..love your videos ❤️do you ever do faces?
I think the one eye needs to come down a bit on the little fish. Nice work though and this video is so helpful
Yes ma'am
