That town survived on shine! The quality was known far and wide, so much so that shiners hundreds of miles away named their product Straitsville Shine in order to sell more of it. A monument to that history stands at the entrance to town, in the form of a HUGE still.
Such a beautiful part of the world! Both mine and my partner’s families were coal miners (from Wales), it’s such a hard job and so incredibly dangerous. It may have been extreme, to set the mine on fire, but when you drive people to desperation (especially when it’s simply to make a profit), these things can happen. It’s wonderful to see that the town still survives! The music in this video was fantastic too ❤
Do you know the name of the original song for this, I believe this is a cover for an original song. if anyone knows, can you lmk and tell me where you can find it.
while not in ohio,, centralia PA fire appears to be bigger and more publicized so,, the ohio historic sign is likley wrong IMHO not the worlds biggest mine fire
Thanks for this. My grandparents grew up there - my great grandpa was a miner for a brief time in NS.

I seriously considered buying the house that sits just above the cave a few years ago. You could just feel the history of that place.
There’s a place by Gore on 595 I’d love to have it’s a pretty house back’s right up against Wayne, my shortcut to N’ville lol

What is rarely mentioned are the Chinese mine workers that were in the mine when the union strikers sent the burning coal cars down.
