I lost my little boy when he was just 3 years old. He passed away from an agressive type of cancer. For the last 3 days before he passed he could not speak anymore. I told him to squeeze my finger for a yes. I would be so so happy if he could communicate with me in some way. But I never got a sign or anything. I would like to know if he was in pain that night. Iam sorry my baby that I was not there.
All those people replied to an ad. During the selection phase, plenty of time for Derren’s team to ask them personal questions and forward details to Derren (who has a fantastic memory). It would be interesting to see Derren try this on random people off the street, and not people who had been PREVIOUSLY SELECTED. (Two key words here) How on earth would it be possible to deduce by body language, tics, facial expression or so-called “cold reading” that someone has a “silly pet” when this person is in a dark, solemn environment, thinking of the death of a loved one? … don’t forget : “ previously selected “
Thats the point though these readings in a group setting use information gathering. They check clients facebooks and do research. Sole cold reading is usually done one on one where they can have the client asked so many questions something eventually clicks.
I know that the video was probably edited. Still, I find it interesting that the 3 hits happened to be Black women, a demographic that is anecdotally known to be quite religious.
Microphone Hell I don't think for one second it was edited. Check out this commercial made by a German (I think,) banking company that illustrates how much information anyone with a little skill (including especially fake psychics) can obtain about someone with little to no delay: m.ua-cam.com/video/F7pYHN9iC9I/v-deo.html I'm 90% sure John Edward is no longer a super famous Oprah psychic anymore because he got caught using dirty tricks like this. Cold reading is strong enough by itself, but add this on top of cold reading and you can obtain a LOT more information that's a LOT more personal than what Darren shared about the subjects here.
I'm guessing, but the colour balance of the camera may have been set up wrong when it was filmed and they've had to fix the colour of his face in the edit.
This is hard to watch, only because while he is faking it for the purpose of the show, those people are really having their feelings manipulated. But I understand the need.
My mother went to a psychic quite a lot (and still has a good opinion of her, she's small time/local) i went with her once and asked her about cold reading. She got really defensive and refused to speak to me. Luckily my mother sees it more as entertainment now, but she didn't when she first went.
Magic is not so much a puzzle to be solved but a mystery to be experienced. A great and honest magician such as Darren Brown, doesn't strive to fool you so that you believe in something, a great magician reminds you to be careful in what you believe in...
So how does Derren come up with the names / images that he talks about ? Mentioning _an elevator_ seems quite specific, and to hear the lady had dreamt about an elevator was weird.
I believe he plants those images in their heads subconsciously through nuanced phrases and gestures. More than likely, she never actually had that dream, but was convinced otherwise.
UKPurplePanther Cold reading is deceptively powerful in its own right, by itself, especially when used on people who desperately want to believe, just because of how the brain likes to fill in logical gaps and make these leaps and then instantly forget that it made such a leap, and also the incredible frequency with which we make assumptions without realizing it. On top of that, sometimes it comes down to social media scans or straight up openly-provided information. When folks show up for cold readings, a lot of the time they're asked to write out who they hope to hear from and/or what they want to learn, and the "psychic" will read the cards or have an ear piece and have the cards related to them while on stage. Other times, reservations are made and tickets are bought ahead of time, which gives the unscrupulous "psychic" and his/her team plenty of time to research just a couple of the people to focus on. It's incredible how much information we post publicly online, and it was only more true 8-10 years ago. I saw a documentary about this type of thing maybe 8-10 years ago and it scared the shit out of me enough for me to start paying better attention to what I share online. It really stuck with me. People such as John Edward have been caught using these exact tricks.
Well, that wasn't so hard. Here's the video I was thinking of. It turns out I conflated a few memories (speaking of people misremembering things, eh?...) and the video is a commercial a bank created, but the message is strong and pretty terrifying. The "psychic" got life details, descriptions of their houses, tattoos, friends' names, bank numbers, actual credit reports, etc., and told the clients all of their own private life info. It illustrates perfectly how powerful a tool simply researching a few incoming clients online can be for a fake psychic. ua-cam.com/video/F7pYHN9iC9I/v-deo.html
I gave psychic a reading one night to a work colleague in the canteen. I told him that he had never had an intimate relationship and he was lonely. He said I was correct and he and others were impressed with my psychic abilities. I was merely guessing from the fact that he was the ugliest bastard I had ever set eyes on.
I’m always curious when cold readers grab names. Especially here with ‘Lili or Lucy’ - Those feel like encompassing names that might hit quite a few names, but he guessed Lucy perfectly from nothing else.
Ruben Gaunt basically the people who attended his show all booked and called ahead to confirm their names. They then googled their names and found their social media profiles and figured out who had passed away most recently for them. Odds are if you’re going to a cold reader to speak to someone who’s passed, you’ve probably posted on social media about their passing because it upsetted you that much. That’s just a guess though. But if I was faking being a cold reader, I’d just google everyone who bought tickets and make sure I only say names of people that I know have died for sure from my research and wait for the person who’s Facebook I found it on to say “yeh that’s my grandma”.
@@MV-xz7so In this case though - hes not running the show (hes a guest speaker) - and the whole point of this is to trick the person who is running the show (so that means he cant just speak to her to get the info youre suggesting he had access to)
Ruben Gaunt not really. All the people there “responded to an advertisement”. Which means he got all their names when they asked to be there. Then he easily could’ve just googled them and found their social media pages. He also could’ve only invited the ones who had public Facebook pages which he could easily access information from instead of people who had private pages etc.
@@MV-xz7so Pretty sure Facebook did not exist when this first aired :) But they probably posted this here now because of the Last Week Tonight episode that aired this past sunday about psychics. Always interesting to see how people manipulate others.
I know that everyone says John Edward sucks, but if he’s cold reading, he’s by far the best mentalist I’ve ever seen. Check out his readings on Studio 10, they’re amazing.
Darren is honest and explains how to do cold readings yet people are so desperate to believe in an afterlife they think Darren is actually psychic, its sad how gullible so many people are.
I am watching with captions on, and I found it amusing captions spelled Brown's assumed name as, "Sure well," and the first medium's surname as, "No effect."
It was awful to see the woman cry because of Darran 'connecting' with someone she loved but it's important to show how personal these people can be and however moving its not true
some people needs that closure even if it comes from a person that is not 100% genuinely talking to ghosts, it might provide them some spiritual comfort "being able to hear" from loved ones that passes untimely
This is a great video! It would be interesting to know what tricks he used! I can see what he did in general with Barnum statements and trying to get information from the audience, but I'm not too sure how he got some of the specific details, like the elevator part.
Always wondered whether Derren has a slight tick or whether he has trained himself to subconsciously give micro gesture influence. If you watch when he speak he makes timy movements with his head.
If you've never read up on the subject, I highly suggest you do, because cold reading is way more powerful of a skill than you think it is unless you're really familiar with it. Still, cold reading does have its obvious limits... So then how could Darren Brown have come up with this sort of personal information? I'll show you. The link below is actually a commercial made by a German bank, but it's all you need to see to understand how literally anyone can become a "psychic" with either a little know-how, or a staff of people with that know-how. It's truly terrifying how much information exists out there about every one of us... ua-cam.com/video/F7pYHN9iC9I/v-deo.html
It is amazing how you can give a human being bits and pieces of random information, and the automated brain will fill in the gaps to create a story that feels real and relevant to the conscious brain. The God of The Gaps lives inside our DNA, and this why we can't get rid of supernatural religion. There will always be talented people among us, who will be able to convince others about the supernatural. I wonder what is the evolutionary function of this seemingly innate propensity to gullibility.
The fact these people attended suggests they already wanted to beleive which makes them open to suggestion. The people are essentially getting given what they wanted and will make it real for whatever purpose. Closure, forgiveness or whatever the underlying reason for them attending is..
My grandpa visited a soothsayer a while ago and the soothsayer said that he would inherit something from his parents. He obviously thought she was talking nonsense because he is 73 years old and why would he inherit something from his parents when they’re already dead long time ago. But after a month he received a letter, it said that he had inherited money from his mother, that they’ve forgotten to give (i think). My grandpa was stunned because how would she have guessed such a non-obvious thing?

I have studied metaphysics and related subjects for over 70 years and I find that Derren has a spectacular mind gift. He may not call it "psychic" but the terminology does not belie the evidence that he has expanded his mental awareness to what is called the "mental Level" in hermetic terms. Derren has learned that all minds are actually one mind as to function and his device is centered on picking up streams of thought out of this oneness as it pertains to the individual mind. I think that this particular practice of "reading from the beyond" is actually what all other psychics do even though they believe they are making contact with deceased personalities. The validity of the reading is only as good as the connection one has made with mind (source). His denial that all physics are basically frauds does have some validity but all that it really indicates is that most readers have a tenuous grasp of the subject matter they are attempting to manipulate. When you add in the credulity of the person being read for, you have a wide degree of outcomes, either completely fraudulent over to the genuine article.
My dad was Charles and he died very young on the same day I had my son, I went into labor when I found out her died. I would have fell hook line and sinker, that's hard to admit to being fooled but it's true.
If people want to talk to the dead they can do it themselves. Piece of cloth or paper, a pen and a shot glass will do you. Faith is only optional but if you need it there's a bunch of spells and pseudo-religious chants that'll cover that for you if you go looking. Save your money and grief and have fun.
I have to say I always considered these people frauds, taking peoples money and peddling lies. The way DB reads these people and tells them what they want to hear, he’s giving them closure, I’m actually more upset he told them in the end. In some cases I think this would be a cheaper alternative to therapy, for some. Alternatively, the wrong information could be extremely harmful. This is a difficult one... depends on the reader a lot and their motivation. I’d love to take part in one of DB’s shows, also, not sure if I could do what he does and not use it to conquer the world! (Insert maniacal laugh)
it may have been the editing but Derren was just too good. Derren is tricksy, he said that he had never met the participants before, that I believe, however he has a team. Professional mediums often investigate their victims beforehand and these people responded to an advert. Derren had information on them, I am sure. He has demonstrated ways to get this information in other shows. Not crying fake, he could work an unknown crowd too, but elevators and hat collections are a bit random....... he knew
Like always. Excellent. But I think that people should be educated regarding how it works. For the sake of their healing and understanding of how human beings work. There's so much deep appreciation that can come from something like this. After all, I do think these types of videos are put out there to provide some sort of education...
Derren is so good at reading people I just have a hard time believing he doesn't have some type of skill that goes beyond what most people have. Whether that is something he's born with or just a skill he's honed over the years he's on a whole nother level.

He used the power of suggestion - so when he was asking the lady to draw something he said "don't go overboard on detail" let you thoughts "sail through you" - she drew a boat. Its that kind of thing
Does he ever go over the specific techniques that the con artists use and his own techniques that he used here? I'm guessing he uses very common names that could be for males or females (Charlie, etc.), makes guesses about people based on how they carry themselves and their demographics, and so on.
9:00 Really _really_ wanted to give that poor lady a hug. Just goes to show how vunerable those who go to psychics - only to be manipulated and exploited by them - truly are. They're just looking for closure and what they get is ripped off and robbed. That's why I hate mediums so much. Fucking vultures!
The scary thing is that now in the age of the internet and social media the fraudsters could have a whole network of people feeding them information about the people in their audiences. All you need is their names, which come when they purchase tickets, then you can scope social media profiles in advance and make notes. All you have to do is remember names and vague details and the audience reactions will give you the rest.
My wife booked us tickets for one of his stage shows a few years ago. Bearing in mind they're audience participation, Imagine my horror when i found out we were sat on the front row. I shouldn't have worried, he threw a soft toy into the audience and then got them to throw it around the theatre to choose people. Anyway, he predicted stuff in the show and obviously they all came true, but then he tells you how he did it. I will say I did hear one thing that puzzled me. He hammered a large nail into his nose and I heard him call it a 'Number 7' nail. A little later in the show, out of ten newspapers, the audience picked number 7 (mind games). The man is a genius, or a witch, or something ;)
You would think so, but debunking almost never changes a believer’s mind. If anything they’ll double down and say you must have a gift and just not know it.
derren didnt have this vid edited? because most cold readings, you start with a barnum statement and then have to rapid fire statements to get hits and have the subject forget or forgive the misses

I believe what makes derren so effective is his British accent... It makes anything sound profound.
and his fcking incredible ability o0
bit more than an accent but i do get where your coming from
Why would that have any currency in Britain? Everyone has one of those accents there.
we need more derren

Well played Brit. Well played.
I'm dead. Derren goes by "Jesus" up here. I would type more but our wifi is crap in the clouds.

God that's clever! Or maybe: God, that's clever!
Hi dead, I'm dad.
Derren is so confident. Would like to meet him in Person
Just amazing. Ive seen about every Video he made. 10 years now watching his vids over and over and im Still amazed about him. He is truly the most amazing out there..
Read that as meet him in prison lol
I would be cautious, he will instantly induct you and have you on the corner with a cardboard box begging for money haha.
I’ve been a magician for many years, and have been very fortunate enough to meet Darren on a couple of occasions. Counter to popular belief derren is actual quite a quiet man in person. He is a very kind man and will talk to you as if you have been friends for years.
@@jordanwardlaw6352We have the same friend (who sadly passed asst recently) and I’ve been lucky enough to meet him on a couple of occasions, which was mind blowing as I’m a huge fan!
You know when people say ‘you should never meet your heroes?’ Well that doesn’t apply here. A lovely man, who spends time to talk to you. Truly humble. A gentleman.
WE WANT NEW CONTENT!! In the nicest voice 😂. Really man! You have a huge fan base. Would love to see you even do “new” repeats of your best mentalist stuff like fake talking with the dead and debunking fools and scammers. Converting atheists (I’m one as well) 😂. Or maybe converting someone of a religion to another.
Your memory tricks (techniques) are insane! Never gets old. I guess I could do a search to see what you have coming up, but I hope you’re up to a lot of cool stuff. 🍻 Derren! You’re the shit!

Thank you for exposing this

Bruh how did no one understand this?
I lost my little boy when he was just 3 years old. He passed away from an agressive type of cancer. For the last 3 days before he passed he could not speak anymore. I told him to squeeze my finger for a yes.
I would be so so happy if he could communicate with me in some way. But I never got a sign or anything.
I would like to know if he was in pain that night. Iam sorry my baby that I was not there.
Great job, Derren.
All those people replied to an ad.
During the selection phase, plenty of time for Derren’s team to ask them personal questions and forward details to Derren (who has a fantastic memory).
It would be interesting to see Derren try this on random people off the street, and not people who had been
PREVIOUSLY SELECTED. (Two key words here)
How on earth would it be possible to deduce by body language, tics, facial expression or so-called “cold reading” that someone has a “silly pet” when this person is in a dark, solemn environment, thinking of the death of a loved one?
… don’t forget :
“ previously selected “
I totally agree, that wouldbe the best way to test this, truly cold with no info
Thats the point though these readings in a group setting use information gathering. They check clients facebooks and do research. Sole cold reading is usually done one on one where they can have the client asked so many questions something eventually clicks.
why is he claiming he hasn't met any of them while admitting he isn't a real psychic
Good job Fraser
I consider myself an authority on 'Cold Reading'.......I sit in my bedroom with a book and the radiator is fucked. :)

I know that the video was probably edited. Still, I find it interesting that the 3 hits happened to be Black women, a demographic that is anecdotally known to be quite religious.
Microphone Hell possibly, or it could be a coincidence
Microphone Hell I don't think for one second it was edited. Check out this commercial made by a German (I think,) banking company that illustrates how much information anyone with a little skill (including especially fake psychics) can obtain about someone with little to no delay:
m.ua-cam.com/video/F7pYHN9iC9I/v-deo.html
I'm 90% sure John Edward is no longer a super famous Oprah psychic anymore because he got caught using dirty tricks like this.
Cold reading is strong enough by itself, but add this on top of cold reading and you can obtain a LOT more information that's a LOT more personal than what Darren shared about the subjects here.
Why has Derren got a Halo around his head on the boat? 🤩😮
Sarah S Orangish gold?
Hi Sarah.
I'm guessing, but the colour balance of the camera may have been set up wrong when it was filmed and they've had to fix the colour of his face in the edit.
bobbyladd That would make sense.
Ah, thank you! I thought it was because he is the atheist Jesus or something ; D
This is hard to watch, only because while he is faking it for the purpose of the show, those people are really having their feelings manipulated. But I understand the need.
south oark also did one about this! it's just a force, making the situation and your statements to fit the situation
Derren Brown is hands down amazing
Firstly, ‘oh Shirley, part man part ghost’. Secondly, like shit he was nervous. Derren is the best and although he’d never admit it, he knows it

Plot Twist "DERREN IS A WIZARD"
He's not a psychic so I'm thinking time traveler. He was actually there during all these events he's conjuring.
My mother went to a psychic quite a lot (and still has a good opinion of her, she's small time/local) i went with her once and asked her about cold reading. She got really defensive and refused to speak to me. Luckily my mother sees it more as entertainment now, but she didn't when she first went.
“He says you’ve been feeling lonely and you have a silly pet” This is fucking comical 😂😂
Thank you Derren Brown for exposing this BS that people do to others. Where are these Psychic readers now in 2019? He wrecked them a decade ago.
and yet people still give millions to the church every year they pay no tax and guess what they don't heal you..and still you give money ....shrugs
LEGEND! 💜
I'll try to find the video I watched back then and if I can find it I'll post it here in a reply.
Nick C it doesn't bother me coz I'd never put my life in the hands of a flaky 'psychic' anyway!!
This is cool but it would be wise to note the original airing date
No need, he's got hair
@@YoungManDub 😂😂
@pierre1050 What do you think has changed in the last fifteen years that would invalidate anything in this video (or indeed the original full show)?
@@MexieMex what makes you think they are invalidating anything? Maybe they just want to know the upload date
@@gmogames pretty sure it did. I think I remember watching it in about 2012/13.
"Skeptical New Yorkers" is the same as saying "skeptical americans" which is the same as saying fairytails are actually true stories.
Fucking love this guy. "We'll meet a lady called Janet who may have a gift..."
I know that everyone says John Edward sucks, but if he’s cold reading, he’s by far the best mentalist I’ve ever seen. Check out his readings on Studio 10, they’re amazing.
"How do you know that?" I'm guessing, you're in grief and came to a psychic. You want to believe.
Is there a video which explains how he got all this information about the people being read?
Derren is glowing in that first scene
Darren is honest and explains how to do cold readings yet people are so desperate to believe in an afterlife they think Darren is actually psychic, its sad how gullible so many people are.
yep
where does he explain
I am watching with captions on, and I found it amusing captions spelled Brown's assumed name as, "Sure well," and the first medium's surname as, "No effect."
It was awful to see the woman cry because of Darran 'connecting' with someone she loved but it's important to show how personal these people can be and however moving its not true
Aw... I wanted to see their reactions to being fooled.
some people needs that closure even if it comes from a person that is not 100% genuinely talking to ghosts, it might provide them some spiritual comfort "being able to hear" from loved ones that passes untimely
Sometimes Derren scares me when he starts mentioning names :)
Scary how good he was at it
Darren says is skeptical of psychic mediums because he can do what they can do and claims he's not psychic, ao how does he do what he does?
Hard to watch when they start crying
This is a great video! It would be interesting to know what tricks he used! I can see what he did in general with Barnum statements and trying to get information from the audience, but I'm not too sure how he got some of the specific details, like the elevator part.
Where is the explanation of how he did it?
How does Derren always manage to accurately guess people’s pets!? He’s done it three times before that I’ve seen
Microphone Hell thats Not what God of the Gaps means

@HealthyAndrew
What does it mean?
Captain Biscuit Shut up.
Very easily, look up confirmation bias.

Growing up in a small town we had an elderly native american women who could do this. She could read everything about you it was strange. Very interesting skill to have.
Is this done through hot or cold reading?
My dad was Charles and he died very young on the same day I had my son, I went into labor when I found out her died. I would have fell hook line and sinker, that's hard to admit to being fooled but it's true.
If people want to talk to the dead they can do it themselves. Piece of cloth or paper, a pen and a shot glass will do you. Faith is only optional but if you need it there's a bunch of spells and pseudo-religious chants that'll cover that for you if you go looking. Save your money and grief and have fun.
I like Derren's shows. I don't know how he does it lol
He just said using his medium skilss 😂
Not crying fake, he could work an unknown crowd too, but elevators and hat collections are a bit random....... he knew
Totally agree. Even with cold reading techniques he was getting way too close to home.

I'm guessing he uses very common names that could be for males or females (Charlie, etc.), makes guesses about people based on how they carry themselves and their demographics, and so on.
i think he just researched every1 beforehand n made cold reading guesses too

Derren põe legenda em português Brasil, vc é toppp
The scary thing is that now in the age of the internet and social media the fraudsters could have a whole network of people feeding them information about the people in their audiences. All you need is their names, which come when they purchase tickets, then you can scope social media profiles in advance and make notes. All you have to do is remember names and vague details and the audience reactions will give you the rest.
What does Derren say at 3:22? I can't make out what he says there. Any help appreciated. CC says "He Cares" but I don't think that's what he says.

How?!!!
I'd use this so to my advantage.
