I started on each of the coloured photos and did the process simultaneously. You'll always end up on Jane, and if you started on Debbie, Patty or Gary it doesn't matter which way you move diagonally (with Jane, Jim or Dave there's only one diagonal move). I know you too well, Derren.
Also, I love the fact that Derren essentally told the spirit of an 8-year-old to "go away".

I've come to very much appreciate Derren. He is acutely aware of human behavior and the strengths and weaknesses therein. There are those who would exploit others who are also acutely aware of human behavior. They don't care what sort of damage they do to the soul who has the misfortune to believe in them. Thank you, Derren for your contribution to the science of psychology and for helping us to be more aware of who we really are as individuals and collectively. We are all much better for it (except for the charlatans, of course!)

His command of a crowd big or small aligned with his confidence while doing his act really keeps people at ease but also makes it easier for him to influence them, their subconscious and suggestibility .I did think it funny seeing (Sharkey)he was the second guy that went behind the curtain that screamed and freaked out lol but is now one of Derren's best friends and co-writer

Mimi I really wanted to recommend this show to you because of your comment. I don’t know if you’ve heard of it, but it’s called Good Omens and it was based off a book by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett and stars David Tennant and Michael Sheen. It’s a comedy about the biblical apocalypse and a love story. I’ve always been agnostic, but half my family is Mormon so I grew up very aware of religion, but from an outside perspective. This show I’ve seen others say has helped them accept their parting from faith or different view on it when one of the main premises of the show is rejecting hypocrisy and ambiguity and fighting for what matters. Of top of that, there’s David Tennant, a lovely subplot of the ineffable idiots(the demon Crowley(Tennant) and the angel Aziraphale(Sheen)), and just about every other ounce of sci-fi/fantasy goodness that is scored with a soundtrack composed by David Arnold and supplemented by the one and only Queen(spawning the theories that Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy among others were inspired by stories Crowley told Freddie Mercury about Aziraphale ❤️) Aaaannnyyway, I’d recommend it to almost anyone, but from your comment, I’d recommend it especially to you.

I've no belief at all in the supernatural but its a good study of how easily manipulated we are, just down to how lazy the brain is, ask someone to pick a city they probably just go with the really really well known ones. Interesting he doesn't start with the seance but builds up to it to get their nerves on edge.
The only bit that affected me was the end when the letter gets read out, dont know why just makes me emotional. I guess I've been moved to tears though by novels and films because of the mind making it real. I know I'm not alone.

As a kid I read books on the Spiritualism Movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s and one of the weirdest aspects of it for me at least was ectoplasm projections. Probably because I had a completely different image of it in my head before I saw pictures of it and it was so bizarre. All the other medium phenomena such as table tipping, rappings, planchette motion on a Ouija Board can be easily explained away but it took me a little longer to realize that it was just as fake as everything else.

This episode was mind opening when I first watched it, as it provided a very convincing and logical explanation of how these things work. I don’t believe in life after death either. I remember when it was fashionable for school kids to get together and play with a ouija board. Once a group of my colleagues were doing it in the school I attended, and a huge glass window nearby shattered to pieces. Another time, my not so distant neighbour which was also in my class, and our school mates played with the board in her house and they all distinctly heard loud steps upstairs. Many people, myself included, reported hearing steps on my father’s house attic. In Rome, an unplugged printer turned on and started spitting paper sheets. My sceptical sister and I witnessed it, among other unusual occurrences.

Early in the photo "choice" selection I could tell it was directing to Jane, in what direction to move; there was a similar puzzle game I recall from my childhood that "forces" the selection to a specific aspect. I think Penn & Teller have done this trick as well.

So at the time of choosing a face, I knew that Jane was arranged to be the focus and if you were following his directions properly she's the only one you CAN finish on. But can someone explain the London/Harry the cat/ill Gran/dad the builder? How did Derren subtly provide that info?
I love Derren, and even though you know fine well he doesn't believe he does an excellent job of being honest and deceiving in his manner of performing.

Michael Typically Derren reveals who is an actor at some point, I don’t think he did in this one. Actually I think he stated at the start none of them were actors and it wouldn’t be all that impressive to have a core portion just the result of the main person being in on it. It still baffles me though,

    • @michael2908

Jaspercat91 I know what you mean. I grew up watching Derren and I loved all his shows. But rewatching them all recently as an adult certain things just seem so fishy. Sally’s reaction in room 7 when she wanted to get out, just screamed bad acting to me. And as you said, how could she possibly say the info in that letter? I don’t want to believe he used stooges but now I can’t help but wonder if he did!

Michael it would devastate the belief my younger self had in him if he was without at some point revealing it. Hoping that never comes out! At least there’s truth to his live shows - I’ve never had the pleasure but my sister has been twice and was plucked out of the audience once and was balled over by what happened so at least there’s that!

I have to admit that I was also drawn towards the picture of Jane however, I didn’t get the feeling that she had passed away…quite the opposite in fact. When you asked to think about the qualities of the person we focused on, instead of thinking “she was” a loving, generous etc. person, I thought “she is” a loving, generous etc. person. It didn’t click why I thought of her in present tense (rather than past) until the very end.

Derren's line about preselecting audience members who showed varying levels of suggestibility got me to thinking; back in the day during the height of the Spiritualism Movement, the suggestibility level of the average seance attendee would be higher and it'd be far easier to deduce if you weren't aware by the advertisement for the seance itself. Think about it; you live in late 1890s America or Britain and you see a flyer for this newfangled thingamajig named a seance, where this medium guy/gal is supposed to send and receive messages from the spirit world in front of a crowd of spectators. You've never heard of such a thing before so your curiosity gets the better of you and you attend, where you witness things you cannot explain and most of the people who witnessed them along with you can't explain them either. And sure there'd be skeptics at the time ie Harry Houdini, Harry Price, but most people you'd encounter would at the very least be open to the idea of communing with the dead.

Adrenaline causes shivers. The initial stunts with the spirit box were meant to kick-start that, and it cascades from there with the parlour trick where the same person (largely) is identified as the spirit, a member of the group is isolated and people will worry about them etc. Once you have a group worked up enough they'll all feel inexplicably cold, which just continues to amplify the effect and increase the likelihood that people will buy into the idea it is real. And once you have someone questioning whether a ghost really is in the room, it won't take much to amp them up even further. I actually went to a Victorian séance act on a stag do (of all things) and it was legit as freaky as this. And we are all scientific, DTE dudes. We knew going in that it was a parlour trick, but with enough of an atmosphere and some simple but effective sleights of hand you can get anyone into the mood.
Plus also, yeah - old buildings in London are cold 😉
