  • I’ve been wanting to hike to an alpine lake for a while now. I’m glad I found this trail. All Trails says there is a 964 elevation gain, but I have my doubts. The trail starts off Hwy 26 and Frog Lake Sno-park parking area. There are vault toilets at the large parking lot.
The trail is easy with minor elevation gain to Lower Twin Lakes. You start off on the Pacific Crest Trail for a mile and a half before turning off to Lower Twin Lake. A half mile later we are at Lower Twin Lake. There is a toilet here. That should keep the lake cleaner with no buried poop to stumble across.
We talked about trying our first backpacking trip together to Lower Twin Lakes or maybe taking to grand kids on an overnight here.
The lake did not disappoint. It was a beautiful blue green tree lined lake. It had some shore line to get to the waters edge and it was not FREEZING as some of the creeks and rivers can be. There were plenty of camping spots. We continued up to Upper Twin Lakes. It did not have the elevation gain I was expecting. The upper lake is smaller by half and there were noticeably more bugs. The lake side seemed to be muddy although we only was the very first part where the trail reaches the lake.
On my next hike here I will hike around both lakes.
The All Trails had a 6.1 mile trip. We clocked around 7 miles after visiting both lakes. The trail was in the forest the entire way with a mix of shade and sun coming through the trees.
