    Eh - to each their own. I'm fine with people who do not like Strava, but for me it has helped me find friends and groups to ride with. I also recognize that I ride bikes for different reasons than others, and some of my friends and I no longer ride together because we enjoy different kinds of rides. I have a few friends that love frequent stops, smelling the flowers and taking their time. I do not enjoy that - Strava appeals to me in part because I like the competition. My friends and I don't obsess over KOMs, but we certainly enjoy competing with one another on segments. It isn't out of malice or obsession; to us it is fun. Then again, I'm also someone who loves that feeling of being completely drained, knowing I couldn't give any more, after a race. Some of my friends hate that feeling. They don't race.
    So I don't Strava is good or bad - it is a tool. Some will use it poorly, but we will all have different reasons for using it.

      100%. Personally I like stopping lots and smelling the flowers as well, and I post pictures of the flowers to Strava! I'm sure Strava, as a tool, influences some people to develop toxic habits, but that's inherent to all social media.

      You said that very well... I like it because it keeps track of my own rides. My biggest competition is with myself. It's like Golf that way.. I know there are far superior riders than me, so I don't worry too much about KOM. It's nice to hit the top 10 now and again but I also realize that GPS devices are all different and when riding with a friend once, we both went down the same hill at the same time and I finished ahead of him but after we uploaded our rides it had him significantly faster than me on the hill. I was waiting at the bottom for him but somehow his GPS said he was faster. So Strava is definitely imperfect but if you use it to have fun and to push yourself to get better, I think that is a very good thing.

I don't like Tequila, doesn't mean it's bad or no one else should like it... I do reserve the right however to let people know I don't like it... It's just life man. Strava, like any social media, can easily become a burden that gets people all twisted up. Like other social media it also has its upsides.I like it for the social aspect in meeting and following others, joining clubs and tracking my rides and exercise (but I also track with garmin's app as well). But yeah, some people can take it too far and then miss out on the joy of simply riding.

  • @pauleichner8831
    @pauleichner8831 Рік тому +19

    Two of the main reasons I like Strava. 1. I can use routes other people have ridden to find new adventures. 2. Segments allow me to see my improvements, when I get a new PR on a segment, and then smash that PR again, this always tells me if my training is improving my overall performance, and I really like that.

  • @RobLennox
    @RobLennox Рік тому +10

    I think these are all fair points, but it also has positives. Personally, I like 'racing' segments to compete against myself. I don't have cycle club mates that I regularly ride with, but segments are just like racing for the town sign... It's a mini motivator. When I get in the top 5% of Strava times on a climb, I'm psyched about that.
    It's like social media: I don't need to share my photos on IG, but I like sharing what I do and seeing what others do. Ditto Strava. If it becomes an obsession, or you're riding just to post to Strava or posting just for the likes, then you're in a toxic relationship.
    And it doesn't mean I can't go out and enjoy a local pootle and soak up the sun, stop for ice cream, and look at the view.
    So I'd say; hate the way that some people use tools like Strava to promote negative aspects of cycling culture, not the tools themselves. Now apply that rule to power meters, aero things, dress conventions. It's not the THING that's the problem, it's the negative attitudes that surround the thing.

    I'd say this too if I was sponsored by Garmin. I don't care about many of the things you mentioned for disliking Stava but as an aggregator for many different devices and syncing to other systems it's unparalleled. Also, Garmin mapping has improved but it's still miles behind Strava.

  • @owensnicholas

    I think that’s a totally fair perspective. I do use it, but I’m not really obsessed with segment times or data. I USE the data, probably poorly. But I like it best for just keeping track of the riding I do, the miles I have on my components, etc. I don’t use it to compete with anybody. Who cares.
    I also like seeing what my friends are up to and encouraging them. There’s definitely a light side of it. Like any social media, it’s how you use it.

    I use Strava but mainly just to record my rides. I don't necessarily care about the power, speed, and segment numbers more than I care about how long my ride was and perhaps how much I climbed. Even with my computer I pretty much use it to see what gear I'm in, distance, and speed, not to stay at a specific speed but more just to know how fast (or slow) I'm going. Makes a no difference either way but I just like to know those numbers. I don't ride by them though. It's more about the result opposed to the progress.

  • @aur_gnd

    It's totally fair to think that way and I totally respect that. On the other end of the spectrum, I like to ride by myself most of the time and I'm a kind of data nerd. I check watts, HR and all kind of graphs about performances and Strava helps me put that together.
    It helps me to put my life in order and keep my life - and mental health - tidy. If I sleep better, eat better and I'm more focus about what I'm doing, I'll be a more healthy person and obviously I'll perform better. It just pushes me to be a better person, even though I ultimately don't care too much about the absolute values I see as I'll never wear the yellow jersey anyway. It's more about how I improve myself.
    It also helps me to follow some friends' activities even if we don't live I the same cities. It's nice to see when they are putting everything together and it works for them.

    i both agree and disagree with this. Strava is part of the whole cycling fitness industry thing 'You must have a power meter' 'You must have a gravel bike' 'You must ride with a heart rate monitor' 'You must get a whoop band' 'You must have cargo bike pants' etc etc Just get out on your bike with your mates and have some good craic. I do use Strava and i find the whole route planning helpful and comparing previous rides etc. I might add that Strava, Garmin, KOMOOT, Wahoo etc, Zwift whatever... there all the same...pick your poison.

    The same way as you guy don't like strava, but, I still use strava for 2 reasons. So far it's the simplist tool to track milage of all my bikes. Especially it's so good to track tyre milage. Maybe these data only for my little hobby, and only thing really important to me is month Kilometers and yearly Kilometers.
    Secondly, strava not offer to hide entire map. It's so good to see my friends are still riding, running, doing strenth training, playing tennis.... We just don't care where they did it, we just feel good that everyone of them still doing these sports and keep in shape.

    - First of all, habits are easier to start if you track them, and Strava does that for you conveniently. I am now hooked to cycling!
    - Avg speed is great for planning commutes and normal rides since I can estimate how long a trip would take using it and distance. Otherwise, it's a nice extra data point for my normal/fitness rides as a reflection of my fitness.
    - I don't care at all about KOMs and segments since I use a hybrid and a foldie lmao. I am not racing.

    Everyone is free to like it or not of course, for me is a really fun game to check some segment and see if I have improved, or make it a “race” with my friends. This doesn’t change that most of the time I ride only to enjoy the ride. There will be always some one that exaggerates things and take it too seriously but is more a problem about the way they approach life not the object the are obsessed about.

    Fair enough comment, but it seems to me Strava does more good than harm and we are all capable of tailoring our use of it to suit our needs. I like being able to look in on mates' rides or runs and give them a well done on their efforts. None of us are doing stuff competitively but I like having a record and stats about how often I get out there and what I am doing. I also like that it works with most of the kit I am likely to use and so does not lock me into any one ecosystem or manufacturer. I might say, only as long as the free version is available.

    I've met a lot of local riders and learned about many cool routes and rides through Strava. I was initially a bit obsessed with some KOM's and PR's but I've pretty much gotten over that. However, it has truly improved my performance, and made me ride more since it makes boring local rides more fun and adds a fun competitive element. I don't really take it too seriously. The real benefit now I see is a cool log of all my rides and associated photos, and meeting some new people to ride with. Although, I do mostly enjoy just riding by myself as a way to escape and be free with my thoughts. Strava is not for everyone, but also great for others (you can also just make it private). My hatred for Strava is that they've bloody put everything behind the paywall. Yes yes I know if you use something pay for it (but you can argue we are as they sell our data so you're double paying for it), and I did pay for it but after having health issues that kept me off the bike, returning to it (fat and slow) to find almost everything is behind the paywall now and you can't even check leaderboards or analyze your bloody heartrate is absolute stingy AF. Oh and then opting EVERYONE out of the flyby's which was one of my favourite features. There's absolutely nobody on it now when before you used to see up to 5-10 riders and a bunch of walkers/runners and was great to see where others where riding for route ideas.
    They obviously don't care about users as they never add features that have been asked about for years AND keep releasing features nobody was asking for.
    Heart rate, cadence and segments should all absolutely be free paywalling those is stingy AF as all you're doing is paying for is them developing features half or more don't use and because they got into huge debt expanding and taking on loans to pay their old loans, I rememeber DC Rainmaker did a video/article about their mismanagement.

  • @markreams3192

    Disagree. Some people are goal oriented and they’re encouraged to ride by knowing their data and progress. For them Strava is good. I suppose there are people who become obsessed with it but if it encourages them to ride and they’re enjoying the ride then it’s not really a problem. For those who just want to ride with their friends and don’t care about the data, that’s not a problem either. It really comes down to personal preference. To say that Strava ruins cycling or is bad for cycling is a broad sweeping statement that is not necessarily true but based on your own personal preference. I use Strava because I like to have the data. I also have the privacy settings on so that anyone that wants to follow me needs to make a request. I follow quite a few pros and the one thing they don’t post is their power data.

    It depends on how you consume it. Actually I do like the social aspect of Strava because it motivates me to get better when I see friends performing well. I can say 'heeey you are doing a lot of sports lately we can go and do a run together, or cycling!". I do look at my numbers but only if I ride alone. For example, I commute uphill everyday, and more or less once per week I try to beat my personal records on the hill. As you say, I do enjoy way more when I go with friends and just enjoy the ride, even if I have my Strava activated but on those scenarios I forget about numbers, because it is not the point of the fun that day.
    You just have to not get obsessed by it and be able to take the positives of it. Hey, at the end of the day, it is better to check on your friends doing sports than "perfect life" pictures on instagram...

    Strava is social media, if you like social media, you’ll probably like Strava. I don’t and as you guys Garmin app is enough for the diary aspect.

      @pphaneuf Рік тому

      I think I like Strava better for the diary aspect because it's not attached to the hardware? Which I was pleased about when I switched from Garmin to Wahoo! But there's probably a bulk export on Garmin, and there's other sites like Ride with GPS, etc...

    BPM and cadence, that's what I follow. Hate the social part of Strava, just want to save my rides, actually don't really know why I have it. Oh, yes, because I use Samsung watch for bpm and Garmin for the cadence - hate that they won't work together

    Owning an Edge 530 I have Garmin Connect too, it's garbage for route planning and navigating around, even trying to update your weight for example is hidden behind a convoluted pathway. Strava works for me, never chase downhill segments because there's always someone more stupid who won't consider risks. But on the flat and climbs(when you can see what's ahead) it's useful to gauge against your own PR's and see if, say a change in diet, or eating time impacts your performance. I have flagged up activities I must admit- and it's always fat mountain bikers who don't switch off their unit and claim every road KOM driving back to home via burger king...

    I agree with you,I started riding with a group 4 years ago,and used to love going out cycling once or twice per week,chating having coffee breaks ect, but STRVA destroyed it all as one by one everyone started worrying about segment and how fast they could ride,now I do not enjoy it anymore so I have stopped going out with them, I prepare doing sole even though it is boring, I am less stressed but I miss the company.

    I only use strava to track my rides and I can see over the years if I am progressing a bit. I don't have strava live or go for segments and such. I have no KOM only local legends because I try to ride often. I use Komoot for route planning ;)

  • @pphaneuf
    @pphaneuf Рік тому

    The "fitness score" stuff (which I think is a bit like the "battery" on Garmin) is what I like most, since I have a Wahoo and no watch, Garmin or otherwise. The route planning has actually improved, with the automatically generated routes (set the distance, hilly/flat, paved/gravel, and it offers you a few loops from where you are), but if I'm serious about routes, especially on a multi-day ride, I'm going to Komoot, no doubt.
    Somewhat annoying that those two Strava favourite features of mine are behind the paywall, though...

  • @Biotico

    I don't go for segments but I do care about my performance over the years and strava is awesome because it allows me to compare my performance and record my rides. The social aspect is another thing I don't care.

    With strava I can look back and see I did 1000 miles in 2013 or a certain ride in 2018 which triggers a memory of a special ride and I restrict myself to only going for koms in august and only once a week and the other rides are for the love of it just throttling back and taking it all in

    So your dislike of Strava seems very narrow minded. I agree with you that people can get consumed by it which is like saying alcohol is bad because people just become alcoholics.. We don't all do that though. I like Strava because when I do wanna push myself, I can. I enjoy going for rides with my mates and if we have to stop for a chat or someone is tired, then we stop. It's not all about setting times every time you go out but when you do want to go out and set a time, it allows you that competition. The biggest issue I have with it though is each device records differently and clearly there are times on the leaderboards that are not real. When you are riding a switchback trail on your mtb and the guy who has the KOM shows a perfectly straight line and beats everyone else by 30 seconds, it's clearly a device error. You can't escape that and it's frustrating to know you really aren't competing fairly but it's nice to have something to aim for... Personally, Top ten lists are nice but my goal is to set PR's. As long as I can do that it means I am improving.. My riding. My fitness. It's nice to see results.

    If Strava was a driving app, pretty sure they would ban it - just for the segments piece, it effectively encourages racing on roads. which overall must increase risks. That was my reason for not getting it, plus i would have lost years of recorded rides off another system. When's the next adventure gents?

    I was always wondering how people are getting these crazy results on segments - because usually when I check the overall time for their ride with this impressive segment results it turns out it is just a good amateur tempo (sth like 30-32 km/h, rarely 33-35). So they must really try to break these records 😅😅 Its so funny to me.

    Guys love your video's but this is a bit of a blinkered view in my opinion. if Strava encourages people to get out on their bike (for whatever reason) surely that's a good thing. Were all different I happen to love strava but accept that its not for everyone. I absolutely love the segments and trying to beat my previous times. Surely more positives that negatives, each to their own and all that

    • @Theparadoxd7
