Just performed my first oil change and this video was a big help! I did have to take some extra steps to get the filter loose, which extended my timeline a bit. But we got it done and I can't thank you enough!
I did an oil change on my 2004 Accord today and I did not need to jack it up. I used swivel attachments that allowed the hand grip of the breaker bar to point 180 degrees towards the front while the socket was on the drain bolt. Just a strong turn toward the passenger tire and it loosened. Also the oil filter was easily accessible from the side. Just turn the wheels towards the passenger side all the way. I put my oil filter wrench cap on my long breaker bar and it was loosened. After the oil filter was loosed I finished I unscrewing it from the top. I also was able to screw on and tighten the new oil filter from the top. No jacking required. Of course because the car sits so low it’s a bit tricky to make sure the socket stays on the drain bolt while your hand slides down the handle part of the breaker bar so you can turn it because there’s only enough room for one arm/hand. But I managed.
Well done, thanks. I especially appreciate the information about the lack of chain lubrication :) I've always wondered about the importance of keeping it topped off.
You make the best practical videos on Honda procedures on UA-cam. I have a 1998 Honda Accord V/6 which has been a great vehicle. I reset the maintenance reminder light on the instrument panel but don't know if the newer Hondas like the 2004 require this. I haven't seen anyone mention how to reset the reminder light on you Tube and thought it should be mentioned. I also keep a written record of date and mileage of any procedure I perform. Thanks for your great videos!
On these Accords you just press and hold the trip button, turn key to on position and then continue holding trip button for 10 seconds. This should be just like your 1998 Accord. I thought I included it in this video, maybe I forgot. Newer Hondas can be reset with a factory capable scan tool.
Thanks for sharing that information on the timing chain requiring the immersion in oil - so safe to go with TOP LIMIT on oil. No more Jiffy Lube for me!
Just to clarify my comment below. I reset the maintenance reminder light on the dashboard after each oil and filter change. By the way your garage and tools are a dream come true!
Apparently Honda doesn't like to see you change your own oil anymore. I have a 10th gen 2020 Accord 2.0T. First they hid the front and rear jacking points. The jacking points do exist, but they made the front one especially hard to get to. Not sure *how* you would winch this vehicle either. Then they threw in two covers to be removed just to access the oil pan and filter. Would be great to do a video of oil change on 10th gen. 👍
I would try Mobil 1 5W-20 High Mileage or Amsoil 5W-20 or put small amounts of "Motor Honey" oil treatment and see if that helps. If all things I would only go 10W-20 if possible and some Motor Honey and Try changing it every 3K instead hope this helps
I know this is a 03 accord engine oil change but I’m asking on my 08 civic LX 1.8L it has conventional 5w20 engine oil can I use this 5w20 honda genuine now please answer. BigDog your videos have helped me before
That was an Arcan that I was using in this video, I am now using a Daytona from Harbor Freight most of the time. You can see both jacks in this tool video towards the end: ua-cam.com/video/cTfnD99qCSo/v-deo.html
Hi, I have a Honda Accord 2004 2.4L with 160K miles. I change the oil every 5k miles but when I checked the oil level it is just under low dot. Maybe because the motor burns oil?
Yes very common for those 2.4L engines to burn oil (if it isn't leaking). I would check the oil at least every 1,000 miles and top off as necessary. If you do that, those are good engines and will generally go a long time. Continually running the engine low on oil can cause issues with the timing chain and VTEC solenoid on those Accords.
@jamesrivt Because the drain plug is on the rear of the oil pan and he has the front jacked up, this will ensure you get as much oil out as possible because the engine is angled up from the front. If the engine was level, it wouldn't allow all of the oil to drain out. Basically wherever the drain plug is located you want to raise the vehicle on the opposite side to get the drain plug hole at a lower level to ensure you get as much oil out as possible. Also the engine must be warmed up so as much impurities are suspended in the oil so that it comes out of the engine with the oil.
Que tal big dog, saludos cuando subes un video de como solucionar la falla al momento de encender mi honda accord 2003 tarda en prender, como si estuviera fuera de tiempo, o no tuviera presión de gasolina, gracias saludos buenos vídeos.
So, im going to ask what i feel is a very dumb question and highly discouraged againbst; however, looking for some recommendations prior to the storm. I cannot get my oil drain bolt of of my Accord.. The the car is on ramps. 1. lack of space and 2. zero leverage and i just dont feel like taking it to a shop. This is my first time changing the oil since i purchased the car. Would you recommend EVER SO CAUTIOUSLY reversing the bolt with an impact drill until i can hand loosen it or not?
Quick question on oil change please. I plan to put the pennzoil ultra synthetic oil on my 2007 Accord v6 3L since Walmart has a great price on the 5w20. My question is if I go ahead with the ultra full synthetic oil, at what interval should I make the next oil change? Would it be the regular 3000 - 5000 miles or can I wait till the 10,000 mile interval? What will happen to the oil change percentage % indicator on the dashboard? Will it be as per the next date interval or as per the oil level or as per the miles after you reset? Assuming I get a minimum of 10,000 miles or a year (which ever comes first) will the oil level % indicator adjust itself now that the full synthetic oil is in the car?
How far you should go on an oil change (and what type of oil) is very subjective and will get lots of differing opinions. Oil is relatively cheap and regular oil changes are the best way to keep an engine running good (in my opinion). I do not go more than 5,000 miles between oil changes on my own vehicles regardless of oil type. Unfortunately, many owners that go 10,000 miles on an oil change never check oil level and of course it if gets low it can cause issues. The oil life indicator (maintenance minder) does not know what kind of oil is in the engine (or if there is any oil at all). It is simply a computer program that looks at certain driving conditions and miles since it was last reset.
My 2005 keeps losing oil and I'm guessing its burning it because there's no leaks, is there a way to stop it from burning oil ? Car only has 147 thousand miles and within the last 600 miles I had to put 2 quarts of oil because it was really low
1 quart every 300 miles is excessive. Thicker viscosity oil or adding an oil thickener can help some (but is not great for engine) but generally when it is burning oil that bad the engine needs to be taken apart and fixed. I would continue to monitor the oil daily and see if it continues to burn oil at the same rate before doing anything drastic.
What day and time can I drop my Honda off for a oil change. Lol How many miles do you go before your next oil changes? I really Like Honda OEM eng air filter Also at 4 k miles my Honda burns or uses about 1 qt of oil I changed it at 5 k miles I am running Royal purple 5/20 and there oil filter too. Any thoughts on this ? I was maybe thinking of going to maybe mobile 1 and there oil filter or maybe stay with what I am using. I did like KnN oil filter on the car. Too I might over think it like every one too. I just like the best for the car and to last long. Runs great too Have you or tried Amsoil oil and filter? Maybe to pricey maybe? Thanks again
lol. I recommend 5,000 miles between oil changes on older Hondas like this one, and I only use Honda oil filters. I don't worry too much about which oil company I use as long as it is a good name brand and it is the correct weight. It's normal to burn 1 quart or so of oil between oil changes. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for not showing where you jackes it up at....im a lil bit bigger not huge but not a skinny guy. having a hard time lifting my car up high enough to get under there. My uncle used to help me but he moved states
Easier, yes. But you can save money doing it yourself, especially if you prefer premium oil. At a place like Valvoline Drive-Thru Oil Change, if you want a full synthetic oil, it will cost you about $93. But you can buy a 5 quart jug of Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and a decent filter at Walmart of 30 bucks. Saving over 60 dollars.
you just overfilled it 19.2 ounces . 4 quarts plus .40 quarts is 12.8 ounces so (32ounces -12.8 ounces is 19.2 ounces overfilled. With 4.4 quarts, the level will be at the top mark on the dipstick. LOL.

Honda does such a nice job of oil filter placement... Finally in 2013 they put the filter vertically on the bottom. Sheesh.
Isn't it easier to get to if it's on the bottom?
Do you recommend some engine oil additives like Liqui Moly Ceratec on Honda K24 Engine. Thank you
very nice video exelente
My car jack lifts to max height of 13 inches. What height is needed for clearance to get under car comfortably?
do you really get all the old oil out while the car is jacked on a angle like that? should the whole car be flat in the air? just wondering.
@jamesrivt Because the drain plug is on the rear of the oil pan and he has the front jacked up, this will ensure you get as much oil out as possible because the engine is angled up from the front. Don’t use an impact. You can strip the threads.

I usually just put 5 quarts because these K24 motors are known for burning oil. I have a 2005 accord
That is another good reason to top off the oil (and check it a lot), thanks for the comment!
I noticed the using oil issue with my 05, good reminder, thanks.
Yep. My 04 Accord is at 213k and all she does is burn the midnight oil.
My 05 year uses about 1 qt at 4 k miles about maybe little less ? With 77 k miles on it runs great as new

Oil filter 15400-PLM-A02 will fit a 2005 Honda Accord.
Never wear watches or jewelry when working on cars.

DTA-me3kv, yes the API-SP oil is backwards compatible to the API-SN specification. Every few years, API updates the specification.
That filter location is annoying isn't it? I used to have one of these.
It could be better lol.
Because I am not in a hurry I puncher the old oil filter with a very sharp all and let it drain before I reach up and remove it. Just Saying
