Honda Accord Starter Replacement 2.4L (I4) 2004 (2003-2007 Similar)

- In this video I show you how I replace the starter and intake manifold gasket on a 2004 Honda Accord. The exact vehicle in the video is a 2004 Honda Accord EX 2.4L four cylinder. The parts shown are for this 2004 model, make sure to get the correct parts for your application. Other seventh generation 2.4L Accords (2003-2005) should be similar but may not be exactly like the vehicle shown in the video. 2006-2007 Accords have a drive by wire system (instead of a cable) so the throttle body is different on those models but the basic layout is similar.
I recommend allowing time for the vehicle to cool down if it has been recently driven before removing the intake manifold.

i guess I'm pretty randomly asking but do anybody know of a good site to watch newly released tv shows online ?
Hi can you please help me with my car
I just want to thank you for your video,. I followed your instructions and was able to replace the starter on my 2007 Honda Accord Se 2.4. But it took me about 4 hrs because am not a mechanic and the configuration of my 2007 Honda Accord SE model was slightly different from the model you worked on. Besides, I did not have all the tools you had. But all the same, I replaced the starter, and the car after sitting down for 2 months now is driving fine. Thank you so much.
Nice job! Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
I shot this video start to finish and tried to show how I removed every nut, bolt and part, which made it a bit longer. Hopefully somebody will find it helpful.
yes, I found it very informative, as you did not assume the viewer would know some of the finer points
that a well-heeled mechanic would.
Very good job thanks
Thanks for sharing. Good video.
the only helpful video by the only helpful guy, from my heart to yours, thank you
Big Dog50001 Automotive Very helpful and so glad to find your tutorial.
Dear Dave,
Your repair videos are outstanding. The thoughtful methodical relaxed manner and all the wonderful tips really help to reduce the stress and fear of trying these projects for the first time. Thank you.
Today I undertook the replacement of the 2007 Accord 2.4L starter with a $30 remanufactured starter that came out of a 2007 CR-V
According to the dealer, there system shows that the 2006 and 2007 2.4L Accords share the identical replacement part number with the 2007, 2008, 2009 CR-V
After completing the swap of the defective original starter with the remanufactured 2007 CR-V starter, ai was delighted that the car instantly kick on and started the engine as soon as I turned the ignition switch to the second position. I was delighted when I tried this several times and at each instance the engine immediately turned on.
The most difficult and time consuming part was the two electrical connectors located beneath the exhaust plenum. Separating these two electrically connectors, sliding them of the bracket hidden from sight behind them and then extracting the loom from the little clip by separating the two little wings located behind the bracket was a nightmare
I didn’t have a needle nose the turned up at a 90 degree angle. But eventually it all came out and putting everything back took only one hour vs. six hours learning how to take it apart.
I wound up with several problems which perhaps you can guide me through (I hope)
1) when I engaged the car I to drive there was a sudden massive frightening jolt. No matter what gear I went into, including reverse, there was a massive frightening jolt of the entire car.
This jolt is so severe I am afraid to drive it.
Could a portion of the pinion gear have fallen off the defective stater and imbedded itself in the large gear it mates with? Is that a possible explanation?
Or, perhaps I didn’t properly and sufficiently tighten the 17mm and 14mm bolts that secure the new starter?
What do I do to trouble shoot?
2) The rev remained at 2,000rpm and would not drop to 700 or 800rpm. This may be because the air intake tube may have a broken small tube at the top of the large black rectangular plastic connector that has a large round 1” rubber connector beneath it?
3) several DTC that existed before the starter repair include
P0420 - the exhaust catalytic converter is rusted and seems to have a few penetrations one one side, oxygen sensor
Decline in efficiency of the catalytic converter in bank 1,
Or a bad oxygen sensor
(Not good) both are expensive parts
P1009
Variable valve timing control advance malfunction
Causes:
engine oil level
Dirty engine oil
Check VTC stainer for blockage
Faulty VTC oil control solenoid or circuit
Faulty VTC actuator
Engine mechanical problem
Stretched ‘timing chain’ or damaged ‘tensioner’ can cause this problem
Replace engine oil to see if that is the problem
P2649
Problem in bank 1 ‘rocker arm’ actuator control system.
Too little oil in the engine ****
I checked and oil level is fine
P0139
Oxygen sensor ‘slow response’
(Bank one sensor two)
Faulty Oxygen sensor
Leaks in the exhaust system
o
Any advice you may offer as to why the car jolts so severely when engaging any gear would be very much appreciated
Many thanks
David
If the car ran perfect before I would double check all work (make sure everything is connected, plugged in, installed properly etc) and possibly pull the starter out and check for damage and reinstall. A high idle right after work was done typically means something was left disconnected or not completely installed properly. Also, the car has codes for timing/rocker arm problems which can also be causing what you describe (just because oil level is ok now doesn't mean damage has not already been done from low oil or long oil change intervals). Thank you for the comment and good luck!
Just want to say that you helped me out big time. I'm not a car guy and have only done battery replacements and oil changes. Today i replaced my starter all because of how helpful this video was. Thank you!
Carlos Espejo Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
great job, congratulations!
Might of been 2 years ago but good for you brother! Hope the Starter is still working. Happy New Year!
“While we are there we might as well pull the knock sensor connector off, so we don’t knock it”. I see what you did there.
But kidding aside you are one of those rare UA-cam assets, who’s expertise and detailed explanation, cleanliness of work is top notch. If I lived nearby I would drive my Honda Accord to you close my eyes write you a blank check and ask you to fix everything in it. Thank you!
I appreciate the comment, thanks!
This is an excellent video.
Some additional tips
1. It is easier to remove the B-terminal nut on the starter after removing the 14mm and 17mm mounting bolts
2. Reattach the wire to the B terminal on the new starter before you position it and put mounting bolts back in
3. If the old starter is original. The mounting bolts may be extremely difficult to remove. Spray with PB Blaster or penetrating oil and use a long breaker bar for extra leverage to break loose.
Thank you saved hundred of dollars doing this myself.
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you so much. I replaced my starter today on a 2006 honda accord with an OEM one. Took me a good two hours as it was my first DIY. Seeing the horror of the 17 mm bolt being hard to come off, i sprayed pb blaster two days prior and let it soak. The bolt came off without any effort with a half in socket and 24 inch breaker bar. Also, i guess everyone removed the 14 mm bolt first, which causes further pressure on the 17 mm. Id suggest remove the 17 mm and then proceed with the 14 mm. New ignition switch + new starter + new battery, car starts like a brand new one.
This is the DEFINITIVE video on how to change out a starter!! Thank you very much! You saved me over a thousand dollars. I can't thank you enough!
Thank you for the detailed video. My local shop wanted $525 to do this. I was able to buy the parts and do it myself thanks to your clear and detailed video. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Much appreciated!
This is why I do videos, I love to hear success stories like this. Thank you for the comment!
How long did it take you to do? This looks insanely complicated.
Excellent man!! the video might be a little long and that is what makes it even more special. You didn’t rush it you take your time you show where every bolts were and how to get them. after watching several videos on how to replace your starter, so far this video is the best of all nice and simple. Thank you!!
I appreciate the comment, thanks!
Thanks for this video. It proved to be one of the easiest starter replacements I’ve done. Only took about an hour and I didn’t have to crawl under the car.
Used your video to replace a knocksensor on a 2003 Honda Accord, I couldn't enough grip on wiring harness to pull if off knocksensor. I only had to pull intake out a little to reach it and get it replaced. Excellent video, everything went extremely easy! Thanks
Glad it helped, thank you for the comment!
You are exactly correct ✅
I found the large wide electrical connector (about twenty pins) to the right and behind the throttle body was left unconnected. As soon as I reconnected it the car immediately shifted beautifully and ran well.
Many thanks
David
I looked at several videos and yours was the best. I was hesitant about doing the work myself until I saw your video. My daughter had her starter replaced on her 2005 Accord and the cost was $600. I got a re-manufactured starter from Orielly (Autozone did not have them in stock). Total cost with intake gasket was about $175. Took me about 4 hours, but probably spent 1 hour in breaking loose the two starter bolts. My 2004 Accord had a long extended bolt on the back bolt. Made it much easier to get a socket on it. The closest starter bolt was 17mm. I figure I could do it in no more than 3 hours if I had to do it again. New starter turns the engine over much faster before it starts.
Good to hear you got it fixed, thanks for the comment!
Honda couldn't think of a worst place to put their starter .
Dunno which is worse: this K-series, or a northstar Cadillac...
Look up acura tl 3.2 starter location. I love honda but they are retards at starter placements 😂
@@pinytenis420 i have a 01 acura tl 3.2L whats wrong with the starter placement.
Have you tried an hhr? Even worse
Mike 839 in a very hard to get dumb spot under things
Thanks so much. I watch all your 2.4l accord videos and they are very informative. Its great to see how clean and thorough you are with your work. Keep it up
H4L Thanks!
Same here i have 2005 2.4
Your video help me a lot. You did not leave out any small detail. I have an 07. There were minor differences. One of the irritating differences was a metal coolant tube about an inch above the nut on the starter. Had to take out 2 bolts on the bracket holding the tube. I could move it just enough to get a ratchet and socket on it. You definitely were a big help . Thank you
Thank you for the comment and the input!
Hi BigDog...thanks again for a very tutorial video! Watching your video every issue you shared does save lots of money if I know in advance..
I have an issue that is causing me 450$ a mechanic robe me..! Car was dead on the street, towed to the nearest shops. They're installed a rebuild starter (promised a new)and no new intake gasket(reused old) and the switch was modified cut off rubber to insert the terminal to it.
Well, I have no choice cause the car was on the street.
Just wanna share you
Thx!!!
Thanks for the note that 2006, 2007 accords have different throttle mechanism (wire vs cable in older models). It's gonna take me an extra step to mess around with the throttle.
Yes a slightly different setup. Thanks for the comment!

Thank you. I changed my starter easily because of your well produced end-to-end video. If I had had a cordless ratchet and a couple of flex head ratchets the job of getting the 17mm bottom bolt out would have been easier. As you suggested, I will get those tools with the money I saved! Thank you
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
@@BigDog50001 hey i hope ur still on this channel.. I really need to know what tool to get for that 17 .. I did everything and up till that final one to remove I realized I did not own the tool to be able to remove that one please get back to me asap my car has been down since yesterday thank you!
Your video made my starter motor change much easier than if I had battled through it by myself. Cheers from New Zealand. Chur.
Thanks for the comment!
Well..... This video needs about 1 million more views. This is the only video that shows exactly what to do from start to finish, the easiest way. The other ways make no sense after you see this. Having to take apart the entire intake, air box, hoses, connectors... YUCK! There's also that other sorry method that involves removing the radiator, even more stupid. You Sir are AWESOME!
Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for this video I was able to change it out on my own and everything works perfectly. I did have a hollow black box behind the manifold that I had to remove to get to the starter. In case anyone has the same problem. It’s just 4 bolts and the whole box will come out.
Thanks for the comment!
I've never worked on cars before. This video helped me remove my starter today, thanks!
Great video. Your a very good teacher. A lot of your little reminders are things that go through my head too. That 17mm bolt was the hardest for me. What took you 5 minutes took me over an hour. Had to use all types of tool combinations to try and get it out and had to pull that manifold back pretty far. Like you said, it didn't hurt the manifold. As always it seems, it was the last bolt that was the hardest!
Thanks for the comment!
i watched other videos on this exact install and I would say you saved me an hour from not having to remove and re-install the coolant hose. But I did have to watch this video a couple times
Well hopefully this video helped you out!
Hey buddy thanks for going into great detail. Your video really helped me. I don't know a lot about cars but I can follow good directions and can turn a 🛠️ . So thank you
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
Thank you for sharing it. Great job you have done there. I am always take care my own vehicles by myself, but before that, One time I brought my Nissan Sentra to the mechanic for them to replace the CB boots... I was there watching them when the boy who remove and replace the drive shafts back, the boy slides the one of the shaft crooked, he didn’t know it wasn’t straight, he tried to use his hammer to force it in... lucky I was there and watch him... I stopped him on time. If I was there... the damage probably huge and would be blaming on my engine.... from that day on I do not trust any mechanic anymore.
One time my niece brought her car to has her oil changes... when she got home her car has no oil in it. The mechanic didn’t tight the drain plug.... the mechanic shops always blame on their insurance policy that the insurance companies won’t allow the customers to watch while the job being done... because the safety... that is a big bull shit. This is the way they can cheat their customers. For instance they never use the synthetic oil in your car, they use recycled oil , but charging their customers with synthetic oil prices and they don’t change new oil filter for you. Keep this in mind people, they charging you five quarts of synthetic oil but never did. I caught them red handed, one time while I was in Houston Texas. Beware there are many bad people out there! OK, if you disagree with my post, please write back and tell me which part of my post you don’t like. Thank you.
Thanks for the comment.
First rate! I'm a very seasoned DIYer and found your video to be exceptional! Thank you for taking the time to show the CORRECT way to do it! Just finished mine. It took about 1.5 hours and I took my time. :)
Glad you got yours fixed, thanks for the comment!
@@BigDog50001 if you are interested, I can email you a very unusual air con issue that I had with my other Accord (06 V6) that the dealer couldn't figure out, but I did. Are you a Honda OEM tech?
An hour twenty five and it was done. Replaced starter ourselves, all good, car is running fine. Thank you for the video!!!!
Nice job! Thanks for the comment!
This is a great video , one thin is hard to understand and is how people can give him tums down ,because a video like this deserve a perfect score , keep the good work my friend .
Can't please everyone I guess, thanks for the comment!
I'd like to know who are the 17 dislikes... likely some mechanics who've beat ppl out of a lot of money. I haven't changed a starter before, but if I have to, I know where to come.
Very good video.
lol Thanks for the comment!
By far the best start to finish video out there!
Thank you, I appreciate that.
At 103K I had the intake off my wife's 2.4, and there was about 1/8" of muck built up on the inside. I took the opportunity to clean this out, and if your car is old enough to wear out two starters, it probably would have been worth looking at also. Also, I would like to see you do some V6 videos!
Special thanks for the level of detail you put into this video. Excellent work sir and you helped shorten my repair time. I was able to see the problems before they became an issue.
Thank you!
Love it. Very detailed step by step explanation. Nothing rushed. Well done sir.
Thanks!
Many thanks for the video! I still have the 2003 Accord running strong so I hope I never have to replace that starter myself 8-)
I appreciate the comment, thank you!
Thanks Big Dog 🐕 excellent video and a big help to me! I remember starters taking an hour to replace but I'm getting up there, 68.
👍
Another great video Big Dog! I like how you show every step. Important for us novices.
Thank you, I try! I appreciate you taking the time to comment!
Thank you Big Dog for your video. Your video is very helpful. I just followed it and finished replacing starter for my Honda Accord. Thanks again.
Glad to hear it helped you out, thanks for the comment!
This is the best video for this job! Everything you said would be tough was, but I knew that going in. My most difficult bolt to extract was the one in back of the motor mount. I now think it might have been easier if the manifold was loosened first just to prevent binding against the bracket. Anyway thanks for all your help.
Thanks for the comment!
Hey,
Thank you so much for putting up this video, you saved me lots of $$$. I can’t thank you enough.

Thanks!
Thank you, I appreciate the support!
Holy damn I did it! BTW 07 Accord is slightly different behind the intake. There's less room but no vacuum hose
Yes, 06-07 Accords have a drive by wire setup so it is slightly different, good job on the fix!
AMAZING !! work my friend . this is truly helpful . The camera angles and the step by step is what makes your DIY video the best one out there. Keep up the good work. :)
Thanks!

Ohhh man, u can tell this guy never wants to lose n argument! !

Great video! Changed my starter no problem, but now my battery light is on. Alternator checks out as good. Any ideas what else I should look for?
Would it be a lot easier just to take intake manifold off completely and out of the way?
Thanks big dog. I got same car, same year, same engine and when I turn the key occasionally nothing happens, not even a sound, it will eventually start however. It all began this morning. I hope it’s just a weak battery. I’ll check it out when I get home later.

Hey Big Dog50001 Automotive. I pulled out the starter motor today on my Honda. I would like to say thanks. This Vid was amazing and very helpful. I was able to put a piece of pipe around my ratchet to get more leverage on the bolts holding the starter motor. For a new Honda OEM starter motor the dealer wants $1600. haha whatever. . i'lll get an after market around $430 for an OEX brand which the dealer sells also. (Thats here in Australia) I hope im not getting ripped off But hey i need this car back on the road ASAP. Thanks again for making this Vid. Legend!
Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it!
Thank you so much, I saved a lot of money replacing the starter myself. :)
Glad it helped, thanks for the comment!
Thats a slick 3/8 power ratchet! Beats having an air hose in the way. I dont turn enough wrenches anymore to justify buying one but I would get one if I did.
They are so much nicer than air operated ratchets. Go ahead, buy one lol!
Outstanding video. Very informative. Thanks for sharing. Another lifelong subscriber here.

Dude thank you very much for this video it really help me out so much with my sons car . And all I use was just hand tools lol but still got it done, thanks again
Good to hear it helped, thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the informative video. The bolts for the starter was a bit hard , but got the job done !
They can be on there tight, thanks for the comment!
As a retired journeyman Honda tech, this is the way to go. I just got the starter out of mine in about 30 minutes. Somehow, it was the first starter I've ever had to do on a Honda. I thought that was unusual, but apparently not (I retired in 2013). The only problem I ran into was the lower 17mm bolt was stripped at the very end of the bolt, and I had to fight it for about an extra half an hour before I could pull the starter out, and it was the original Honda starter in there, so, very surprising to run into this (Honda quality?)! Anybody else run into that?
I havn't seen them stripped from the factory but I'm not shocked. Thanks for the comment!
I managed to repair the bolt with my Snap-On thread chaser kit, but the recessed hole in the block will require a longer thread chaser that I'll have to find somewhere. It can't be accessed from the back, not enough room.
Sounds like you are having a lot of fun over there. That does suck when you have a situation like that.
Well, I just finished installing it in my driveway in a cold rainstorm that turned into a blizzard while I was still chugging along. Could only get the lower bolt halfway in while I was freezing to death, so I put a half dozen Honda crush washers on it and tightened it up good. Before I even attempted to start it I took a break. I'm soaked through my clothes. Gotta get some hot coffee going, I'll get back out there, start it up (hopefully), then pull it into the garage and finish up the details. Yep, lots-o-fun!
How did you get the 17m.m. out I'm having the same problem I'm havein to get me a battery ratchet to see if I can get it out then once you do how do you get the new one in
put in a Napa starter that when cold works great.
after warm up when started kind of hesitation when key is turned to start, is there something else i should be checking. thanks.
Thank you for this tutorial. I was able to replace my starter, although I am not a professional mechanic. It took me quite a while, 3-4 hours. The space is really tight, maybe it would be a good idea to remove the intake manifold completely. Although, I am not sure how easy or complicated is it to do so.
Please pay attention to the knock sensor. Unfortunately, I managed to break off mine's plastic socket. I would advise to remove it first with a 27 mm socket.
Glad you were able to get it done. You learn from experience what you need to remove and what you can work around. The more things you remove the more "can of worms" you can open up and you are almost always going to work in tight spaces in any modern engine compartment. Thanks for the comment!
I've got everything done so far but the starter bolts are stuck and I've been trying for 2 days now, yesterday I got a can of blaster and sprayed them throughout the day with no luck
This video is excellent. Im glad I found your video. Now to put mine on, I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks

I’m sourcing these parts to do this job this coming weekend. I notice that when I look up the intake gasket I see another gasket in the set they sell. Do I need that one also?
Great job! You made it look easy... Well done video.... Thank you!
This video was excellent. Followed it step by step and everything went smoothly. Thanks!!
Excellent, thanks!
im struggling to find the right intake manifold gasket i bought one but it looks a little different than yours it has 4 holes for the cylinders but it also has some other miscellaneous things around it
I like how you didn't entirely remove the manifold like some do.
It may be necessary in some cases but I try to leave it in place if I can. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for the video. I have a question.
New battery. Good alternator. Slow and weak crank and start. Sometimes it didn't start. Could be the problem of a bad starter? Not sure how to diagnose it. 2004 Honda Accord coupe LX.
I have an 04 with the same motor. I have a short that will drain the battery in 2 days and won’t start. Saw a few posts that starter could be the issue. Any ideas if this is true?
Thank you such a good step-by-step video for this repair, it was extremely helpful.
Glad it helped!
Very knowledgeable mechanic. Thank you for this video.

Hi so what if the 17m.m. on the starter comes halfway out an gets stuck what's happened I got everything out so far but the 17.m.m I'm havein to try an get a battery ratchet to see if it will back out that way
Thank you very much for your video I was able to fix my car
Amazing concise video, very descriptive and informative. 2 thumbs up!!

gr8 vid, could you also get to the starter from under the car? I saw a vide on a Element that did that but on a lift. would it be safer to put something over the intake to prevent something from accidently falling it it?
hi, is the procedure the same for a manual transmission? 05 accord 2.4 5-speed
thanks
One critical thing to note. If you aren't going to remove the intake plenum completely, you may want to go ahead and purchase a new intake boot or bellows. That's the large breather hose between the Throttle Body and the Air Filter Housing. They are commonly known to split if disturbed, and almost certainly won't take all the bending and flexing required to keep the intake plenum out of the way. To me, it's just easier to take the plenum off completely, while being very gentle with the intake hose. Oh, and just remember, the engine won't run right if that hose gets torn or split. Huge vacuum leak.

Did this on an 07 crv.belive it's the same setup.i went through the bottom.the 14mm long bolt is a pain.but just remove the 2 8mm bolts holding the starter together.you can remove the cylinder half exposing the 14mm long bolt.made this job a breeze.maybe will help you accord guys too.
This video was great! I couldn't have done the swap without it... Thank you!
Thanks for the comment!
I watched your video several times in preparation to change my starter myself. Your video is very detailed and easy to follow. It gives me confidence that I can do it myself and save money. One question? What else could I clean my manifold mating surfaces with before I put back together if I don't have brake cleaner? Thanks for the video, its by far The Best one I've watched
You might be able to get away with just wiping it with a rag however you'll want a nice clean mating surface, so you don't create any vacuum leaks. If you are going to do all that work I recommend going to the local auto parts store or a store like a Wal-Mart or something like that and pay a couple dollars for a can of brake cleaner (it usually isn't very expensive and brand doesn't really matter). Many grocery and convenience stores even carry brake cleaner too, so it usually isn't too hard to find. Thanks for the comment!
@@BigDog50001 OK I'll will definitely do that, .. What else is brake cleaner good for, since I'm gonna get and have some, like maybe some other good uses for it, like does it clean glass, or plastic or even the whole engine??? Thanks🤘
Why isn't this the first video to show up in searches :/
I wish I knew, thanks for the comment!

Thank you for the comment!
Thx for the torque sequence and specs.👍
You bet 👍!
This is a hell of a lot easier to replace the starter on the Accord than a 2006 CRV.....
Yes, a bit more effort to get the intake out of the way on those.
I have access to a lift. Would it be possible to replace the starter working from below? I really dislike taking off large expensive and fragile parts to replace something as simple as a starter.
Thank you! Just what I needed.
