These string videos are really cool. Some years ago I read a interview with Paul McCartney that George Harrison used flatwounds on his 12-string; I also heard Roger Mcguinn used flatwounds too.
Love the attention to detail in these string videos - I think we can consider the "heavy gauge flatwound" thing a myth that has been thoroughly busted!
I remember John Hall telling me years ago (2001?) that he was still supplying Paul with the original Ricky flat bass strings for his 4001, but his supply had run out by then. though, John will deny it til he turns blue (or orange) in the face, John recommended he try Pyramid on the Ricky, then Thomastik. I believe Paul is currently using Thomastik on his Ricky.
@lk63 yeah, I tried them a few years ago, too. I gave them the contact info to give a set to Paul at one point. I liked the strings, though. I thought they felt and sounded very similar to Pyramid.
I have heard for years to use Pyramid strings, Great video such great research. I remember early 70'a Maxima strings came out with the Jimi Hendrix set, they were black coated strings, they were more expensive, but did last a bit longer. Try and find a pack today???
Amazing! Thanks for the hard work… I got a bit confused in the beginning of the video.. the set of roundwounds for 12 string could have been used by Beatles? Or was it flats 100%?
Thanks! On his 63’, it would have been flats at all times. I was just showing that flats were the only string available until mid-late 65’. It’s funny you bring that up, I too was gonna cut that bit out, but figured people would question what the 484’s were lol
@@guitargearconnection It is why even in the early 70's we did not change them unless broken or really cruddy, I used to wipe them top and bottom after every practice playing session.
I'm a Rickenbacker heretic, I suppose, because I do NOT like Pyramid flats. My 660-12 came with them when I bought it in 2001. They sounded okay but were a BEAST to play. It was like playing a piece of rebar. My fingers hurt after a short time on them. I tried the usual makes for electric 12s but what sounded and felt the best? Wait for it...RICKENBACKER strings.
Give the 308/12’s a try! They are the lightest of all the Pyramid strings. Not really a popular seller. Most people end up with the thicker gauge sets.
Probably partly why Roger McGuinn tunes his 360/12 down a half-step, because he uses Pyramid strings-he must really like them if he hasn't considered using strings with less tension.
Awesome video! That updated Rickenbacker website and resources were a treasure trove 🤘🏻🎸
Thanks Brian!
Great video Paul! I also agree that size matters.
Thank you 🙏
Could never get bored with your wonderful detail Paul ' thanks for doing what you do '
Thanks for the kind words!
Great video! And theres no such thing as too long when it comes to a beatles gear video!
Great video. Very enjoyable & informitive.

Great video as always Paul!
Thanks Sam!!!!

Optima is making the red box flatwounds again for bass.

@ haha understood! Thanks also for always answering, I really appreciate all of your research!
Please put more amps in the background
Go into as much detail as you want to Paul! $7 for a pack of strings, that was a lot of money back then!😲
I know it was a ton of money back then!

@@guitargearconnection Tickets for a Beatles' concert were like $5.I guess I won't be getting new strings for a while!😄
