Remembering George Harrison. Was he a master guitarist or just meh? This video answers that question with examples of George's guitar parts and sonic innovations from classic Beatles songs.
Spoiler: I learned so much about musicianship, exotic sounds and how to "orchestrate" guitar parts from George Harrison, and he has a lot to teach you, too.
Discover my most important "Lessons from George" as I play snippets from some of his most interesting and intricate 6 and 12-String electric, acoustic guitar and slide guitar parts, along with sitar, harmonium and swarmandal. Learn how his Beatles-era songwriting was both similar and different to John and Paul's.
Includes examples from And I Love Her, I Feel Fine, Nowhere Man, Paperback Writer, If I Needed Someone, Norwegian Wood, Love You Too, Within You Without You, We Can Work It Out, Strawberry Fielda, Ticket to Ride, Here Comes the Sun, My Sweet Lord, Run of the Mill and Give Me Love (Give Me Peace on Earth).
Ultimately, George taught me THREE major lessons. Watch to the end to discover all three, then apply them to YOUR OWN playing and singing.

Then Feb. 9th 1964 came along and that was it and right up to now since Abbey Road, I've nothing as unique and music to put me, even to this day, in AWE. I was so fortunate that my ear at such a young age caught this right away. It was wonderful and every album was just the coolest experience I've ever known in my life, Thank you John, Paul, George and Ringo. John was a very innovative and creative rhythm player who was great at supplying the rhythm guitar to the song. George was the exact same way with his lead, George is definitely a better guitar player, but they both are genius with using their songwriting techniques and weaving them into the songs with their instruments.

When I listen to George's guitar solos in pre-Sgt Pepper Beatles songs I can't help but think of them as musical Haikus. Short, spare, perfectly constructed and often ending with an unusual twist. To solo in a 2min 30s song without becoming a showy distraction and yet still contribute an indelible part of the whole -- well that's musical poetry IMO..

I just “discovered” you this morning. What a treat. So much fun. I love the Beatles, all 4 of them, and I have an unquenchable curiosity about how things are made, which extends to music. Also, I had the good fortune of discovering music theory in high school. It was my favorite course of all time. All of this experience helps me understand ALL of your great demos and explanations of what JPG & R did to create the most memorable music from my youth (I was 11 when I watched the Beatles first performance on Ed Sullivan. I’m 71 now.) Wonderful programs. Thank you for what you do. I’m a fan of yours. I sent links to your videos to my music loving friends.

George was the little brother who only got to hold the football on the kickoff or hike it to the big guys.
However, he kept delivering good songs much longer than the arc of the Beatles. Moreover, he was a much more complete guitarist in several genres than the others.
A guitarist I worked with in LA said he was not a soloist; he was a great parts player. That's what we are hearing. His licks, his intros, his hooks.

Merci beaucoup. To really see George, you should watch his concert he organized with Dave Edmunds to honour Carl Perkins. I'm amazed no one on that stage was injured by Georges' smile, it was so wide..
I have a friend who played guitar with the Young Gods who took up the sitar. And an Indian player said he was playing it wrong. So he went to India to learn properly, and now plays exclusively the sitar. While he was in India, they asked him for help with mixing their records. They were amazed at the results and started calling him Mahadev, which means Young God!!
I'm surprised you didn't talk about the final transition that George took in his musical life. He became a pusher man for the ukulele. He would always have several ukuleles in his car boot, since most people didn't have a ukulele to play. And then he would leave them with his friends. That's why the ukulele is seen so often at the Concert For George.

I so agree with you. I feel that way too many of today's guitarists make their guitar playing the center of their attention. But even Clapton did that! I believe that George was ALL about the music; so was John. Remember - George had to come up with a 'Lead' on very short notice, and he Always came up with something memorable! I think George was one of the greatest guitarist that we've ever experienced! In Heaven, he's still entertaining.
Oh - I also see too many of today's guitarist strum an acoustic like they're a member of the 'Who'! Long-strokes suck!

  • @geniusmrx

Sorry if I’m repeating here, but “Heart Full of Soul” was actually Jeff Beck emulating a sitar sound with an early use of fuzz box. The Yardbirds had hired a professional sitar player for the song, but the group wasn’t happy with the results and Beck came up with the sitar-influenced version we hear in the final release. Hearing the earlier versions with the actual sitar, I feel Beck’s version goes better with the song, as well as just being awesome in general! Thank you for this great overview of Harrison’s oeuvre! The whole group was extremely talented at producing the right notes to accompany the song. As a drummer, I was always blown away by Ringo’s brilliant backbeat choices and fills (lefty playing as a righty!). And I didn’t know until a few years ago that McCartney played the mind-blowing solo on “Taxman”! Had always assumed it was Harrison since it was his song!

George is a moral guitarist inside the most moral of all groups that are the Beatles. This group was at the service of the greater good, it being music. Keith Richards said to Lennon: why do you carry your guitar So high? But he so doesn’t understand that for them the guitar is just a tool, like the saw for a carpenter. Is the carpenter going to show off his saw instead of his work ? Thus thé Beatles are the greatest of musicians because they never let the saw tale precedence over the work unlike people like Jimmy Page , for instance.

Could you do one on Paul McCartney? I'd say he was quite a great guitarist in his own right too!!

    • @RobertCassard
      @RobertCassard  4 місяці тому +2

That’s my plan! McCartney next. Then I might even do a video on what I learned from Ringo…and maybe George Martin, too! As I said, be patient with me but I’ll get around to it eventually.

I always thought George was the unsung hero of the group. Even thhe early, simpler stuff, there's no two leads that sound the same.

i’m a huge fan of slide guitar. his slide playing is unique in respect to some times playing slide with melodies, vocals , then some unique licks

What I learned in college art classes is this........don't confuse "art" with "technical proficiency". They are not always the same.

He was asked what he'd do if the beatles were not there and he said "I probably would be a better guitarist.". And although i somewhat agree with the statement, he was so good at playing what the song needed. His solos or riffs may not be the most technical or the toughest out there, but they are so important for the songs they were written for. They just fit PERFECTLY for the songs!

No doubt John and Paul held him back for years, but by Abbey Road, at least Paul was cheerleading George somewhat. Here's the evidence - George's process of writing and recording Here Comes the Sun with just Paul and Ringo: ua-cam.com/video/bDMtaiH6TTI/v-deo.html
