- Amidst rising tensions in the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, the American military is set to expand its presence in the Philippines.
The Marcos administration wants to increase the number of US forces in the country, by allowing Americans access to four additional military bases including Palawan and Cagayan, through the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement (EDCA). This move reverses the cooling US-Filipino ties under President Duterte. But the long, storied history between the two countries could complicate the return of US troops.
At the same time, Chinese investments in the archipelago are in jeopardy, as Beijing protests the move. What is behind this troop buildup in the Philippines, and could this raise the temperature in the region, as China reacts to the growing American might at its doorstep?

People who opposed the presence of US troops in the Philippines may not be aware that when the US left the Philippines before, the Chinese became very aggressive and started to occupy the Spratlys Islands, and we were helpless to evict them. As regards their claim that the presence of the US forces violates our sovereignthy, that is not correct. US bases and forces were in Japan, South Korea, and other nations, and yet, their sovereignthy was not affected at all.

As a Filipino, I personally believe that PH should be a self-reliant, economically and militarily capable nation. However, I also believe in the importance of alliances and shared values.
This is why I support EDCA. Superpowers will always be flawed and controversial. But I would rather side with countries that share a long history of democratic principles, military compatibility and interoperability.

Many Filipinos have come to America to become American citizens and work as medical doctors and nurses and other occupations. We welcome them as good citizens. Recently, an ethnic Filipino became the commanding officer of a US Navy aircraft carrier and has served in that role with honor. During World War II, Americans and Filipinos fought together and died together as brothers in arms. Even though the Philippines have long been separated from the USA, we think of you as a part of us.

That statement where he said he would rather take China's empty promises than no promises at all says a lot. Gives people hope? Sure. But when those promises fail to arrive you only end up with despair. China may bring benefits to Cagayan but right now they are bringing suffering to other provinces like Palawan and Zambales. The reality for India's young population is that they are living in a gigantic multi-lingual subcontinental power that's the 5th largest economy and 4th largest center of power in the world. This is not correct the USA military was in the Philippines for years. Until the Philippine government asked the USA to leave. Clark Airfield, the USA Navy was there as well. USA military had a strong presence in the Philippines since WWII.

Philippines is plagued by systematic corruption, which has been around since colonisation. Philippines is corrupted and built that way so others could dictate the situations easier, ignorance is cultivated in the Philippines whilst intellectuals are reduced to martyrs like Jose Rizal. Likewise, the Philippines has so many issues which makes it hard to concentrate on this China issue alone, we suffer from earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes just like Indonesia, then we have the most typhoons in the world per year which is now more stronger due to carbon pollution especially from China and the US, we suffer from ongoing rebel insurgency be it terrorism or communist rebels, we suffer from systematic corruption like the human trafficking industry installed by colonisers and etc.
But the Ph does have its strength, but if we flexed our biggest weapon it would be end game for everyone. Let's just say Philippines is not the pinnacle of the coral triangle and next to the world's deepest abyss for no reason.

I'm grateful for the U.S.A for the opportunities; I'm one of the millions of Filipinos that immigrated in the U.S. I had the opportunity to served, earned my degree, and retired at 44 in the military as an Officer. Looking back 30 years prior; without that opportunity, life would be the opposite. Like any government, there are it's pros and cons; but, I still think U.S.A offers the best opportunity as long as one puts in a due diligence. For those Ney Sayers; listen to the mass population; 75% plus agrees to the U.S presence; not my poll, but the mass..all the best! God speed!

i wish more people knew about the military route for U.S. citizenship. Every single person regardless of background that i've met that went through that program are the best type of people any country could hope to have. It's insane, i hear people in developing countries that just insult the U.S. partly because it airs its past wrongs in the open so it can learn from them, and if other countries had to open their Top Secret files after so many years like the US does, i assume other democracies might also do this, but it's used against them by authoritarian groups alot like the CCP that control mainland china. So happy to read you had a good experience overal, I live part time in the Philippines and have such immense respect for Filipino's and the country, but more need to know you can earn money and learn a trade all while getting U.S. citizenship. the discipline learned that is required for the military is envied the wise.

I've had to opportunity to served along side individuals who would give their lives for the cause, all American and by far my best experienced in the service; and still keep in touch with them after retirement; I hope to prime my two kids to serve, in hope for them to learn discipline and serve our great nation. as long as china can’t learn to treat ASAEN countries equally, US will always be the reliable allay for ASAEN countries, lots countries don’t care of democracy, but every country care of their boarder not being breached. China either give up the nine dash line claim, or accept the reality that ASAEN countries will cooperate more closely with US to confront china in South China Sea
nine dash line has its historic backgrounds, Chinese are not really keening on claim those areas within nine dash lines are Chinese territory, it just want to get rid of American appearance within the region, and find a way to cooperate with the neighboring countries to develop the areas within 9 dash line together. Malaysian govt is digging oil within the 9 dash line, Chinese navy never even care to interfere, now the Malaysian govt wants to join development with Chinese capital and technology. just please stop trying to understand intl geopolitical matters from mainstream west medias, they are pretty much biased and only hire a couple of "woke analysis's" to tell their aspects(mostly favored US Agendas) , you have to see how the world leaders and a wider population is thinking of those matters

True, thats why I support Ukraine. I just cant stomach Filipinos who support Russia invading Ukraine. Its as if they are okay with larger countries conquering territories of another smaller country and ee Philippines is vulnerable for that. They are foolish and ignorant..

China is really a bigger form of Russia. Communist country, want to take over any country they want to, sees numbers (in military) over experience, don't care about violating war laws. The world will continue to have wars unless the countries decide to get along with each other, not attack and kill others
