My friends had told me I would love this episode before I even started listening to the podcast but wow. This was both great and very, very disturbing. I mean, I have this habit of knocking on things when I know there's a spider living nearby. Just... you know, knocking on the wooden things and gently moving around objects, so they can hide and I don't have to see them. A fair warning, I always thought. "hey, I know you live there too, and I wouldn't want to rob you of your home, but for both our sake, it might be better if we just... avoid each other! So knock knock, I'm coming, can you please retreat to your hiding spot for as long as I'm the room? Thanks. You're a nice spider."
I don't think I'll ever be able to unhear this episode. Huh. I think I might want to reconsider my silly habit. It's no wonder the friend who got me into TMA got so ominous with me when I told her of this habit as a small quirk of mine.

It's one thing to not want to harm them when you're completely okay with them and even consider them cute sometimes (watch me turn into Martin there for a sec), but it's so much more meaningful when you are scared of them, but still want to arrange your coexistence in a way that would be comfortable for both sides. That's... that's a lot of humanity in there, pal. Keep it up.

I've been deeply enjoying this podcast while working on moving, enjoying some spooky stories. But these latest episodes are the ones that really start to freak me out. And I think that's because they're so much more real. The others are stories recounting what happened, and in a way that's better because you know that the person telling the story makes it out alive(or at least somewhat alive in some instances). But these past few episodes, it's all being recorded as it happens. There is nothing to reassure you that anyone is going to make it out alive. And now I'm caught up in a whole range of emotions because Jon is clearly not ok, and I don't think he'll ever be truly ok again, and that breaks my heart. But we also don't know what's going on with Martin and Tim and if they're ok or what Elias is up to. And that worries me.

i thought he was at LEAST 40 lmao but somehow knowing that hes probably in his late 20's makes this all so much more tragic wtf
also, if the eye thing apparently claimed jon and if that happened when he was a child or something, then maybe the spider tried to kill him because it hates the eye or something idk (that would also explain why jon hated the spider book & spiders in general i think) (maybe that was also why his parents died just from different monsters)

you probably already have all this figured out if you've finished the podcast; but the Web was the first entity to 'mark' Jon. Elias and the Beholding chose Jon because he had already been marked by one of the entities; and he needs someone who is marked by every entity (or Fear) for his grand scheme. I don't believe that Jon was claimed by the Eye until he took over Gertrude's position, but I could be misremembering.
But also, very convenient for Elias that Gertrude's understudy had already been marked once. Poor Jon, though.

06:43 Welp, they mentioned Diana Wynne Jones. There goes my heart, given voluntarily to this podcast for like the thousandth time in two weeks.
/I hope the one book he read from her was Howl's Moving Castle; it's undoubtedly the best, with Castle in the Air coming close second and Witch Week hanging out in the third place/
16:40 I was so ready to hear him saying "...but I have since come to the conclusion that I was a d/ck". C'mon, Jon. We all know you pretty well by now. You don't have to dance around it like that.
Ooh, so Melanie was not the first person from the "let's make the things that torment the archivists and assistans of the Magnus Institute sound like fun and entertainment" cathegory that Jon has met. Interesting.
S1 Jon: His dead body was completely wrapped in webs? Definitely a stroke.
S3 Jon: Yeah, I've met Daddy Longlegs before, nasty thing, def supernatural, made me go to the Archives in the first place.
S1 Jon: Oh you, "respectable" "paranormal investigators", with your fancy equipment to give it some "sparkle" (of bullshit, ahem, what? nothing), coming to us, credulous fools to make a statement? So honoured, so honoured.
S3 Jon: Oh hey, Georgy c: I cleaned your kitchen c: Love your cat c: Thank you so much for having me c: Sorry for the trouble c: Will be quiet as a mouse c: Will stop recording everything like the maniac that I am just because you need some peace and quiet c: /shy chuckle/
I'm having a blast, glad I waited for a good time to sit down and enjoy this without being in a hurry. What a start for the new season! Love the insight on Jon, the new girl who I already know I would kill for without hesitation, and the potential this sticky situation gives us.

Currently listening to this episode on Spotify again, I'm just here to comment.
It's the... 4th, 5th time I'm hearing this episode now. And it still is and remains one of the few statements that actually gives me chills. It's among my favorites, partly because I adore Jon and it's great, although painful to learn more about his background. But the story about Mr. Spider scared the everliving shit out of me and it's just the same each time I'm listening.
The writing and performance of this one are genius. As are the sound effects and background music, it really does its job to have me on the edge of the seat and chills running down my back.

His childhood bully saved his life, if he didn't, Jon would have died instead.
Leitner's book really affected Jon as a kid. :(

ok, i finished the podcast but I came back to this episode because I just realized an interesting detail. This might be slight spoilers but I don't think it is.

I just realized. You know how Jon has premature graying hair. That could have been his mark from the spider :)
maybe it isn't graying hair, but very vivid and thick strands of silky spiderweb ;3
or maybe it is metaphorical spider web. nonetheless I still think it was the mark he got from the spider XD

I love Jon since the beginning (yeah, even when sometimes he is an absolute idiot and the personification of intelligence ≠ wisdom because I must admit it kind of apply to myself too) and this statement, that season finale and how broken he sounded here at the end deeply hurts me.

This episode is great because it explains _everything_ about Jon. From his hatred of Leitner, his false skepticism, to why he's so withdrawn with people.
Jon's childhood was basically a series of traumas culminating in Mr. Spider. I know Jonny considers this his weaked episode but I think it's a wonderful example of how to write a character. In the previous seasons we learned very little about Jon himself. Except for the revelation he wasn’t ever _really_ a skeptic and that he's familiar with Juergen Leitner's books. Here we learn all about Jon's childhood. Which explains _so_ *much* about the man who’s our protagonist.
