I mean, in fairness that time was "shake my hand and I'll tell you a secret."
It's part of the "backfire" from worship - he "knew" what would happen, but is good at fooling himself so that he can experience it firsthand. This is why Gertrude threw herself into danger, and why other "close" archivists (michael and the ghost hunt chick) are constantly wanting to GO and find out what's happening. It takes a LOT to force Jon into action, but then he's absolutely fucking relentless because he basically gives in and lets it guide him by (again) pretending HE is in control

@@clayxros576 I think it might have something to do with how the powers themselves manifest for each individual but this is just speculation. While both Jon and Elias serve the Eye their methods of "information gathering" are incredibly different as seen when comparing Elias aggressively taking the statement directly from Daisy's mind leaving her a nearly sobbing wreck to Jon's uncomfortable prodding questions that you cannot seem to stop yourself from answering and without spoiling too much Elias joined the Eye because he witnessed an act of incredible violence meanwhile Jon joined the Eye because he hated the thought of being a victim of an unseen manipulatior.
For all the Observing he’s supposed to be doing Jon’s sure never seen a braincell in this life

.... The more I listen to these, the more I understand why in DnD Intelligence and Wisdom are two very different things. Jon might have a really high intelligence stat, but his Wisdom is abysmal. He has no concept of self preservation.
wisdom is also the stat of faith based magic which ironically none of those chosen by the "gods' seem to have here

@@Ghostrecall_M in 5e paladins powers come from conviction not faith and in 3.5 where it is faith based there spellcasting is indeed wisdom, while warlocks do come from a higher power its in a bargain, faith is not required and in most cases you can even keep your powers while actively opposing your patron, its even arcane not divine
Jon would be classified as a warlock.
He thought he was a wizard so maxed out Intelligence instead of Charisma which explains why his powers are so weak.

I hate how everyone's saying Jon is stupid bcs he puts himself in dangerous situations to gain knowledge, I'm only up to the current episode but I'm pretty sure that's the sort of vibe the Eye is supposed to have, it's that kind of reckless romanticism that gives him his character
Basically yeah. He even said it himself a couple of episodes ago. He knew going after Jude Perry would be super dangerous. He knows going after Michael Crew will be as well. He just NEEDS to know 👁

@@RelativelyBest Me too. Elias is my favorite villain in the story so far. Michael's also interesting. Even Mary Key (does she qualify as a villain?). Anyone but this Jude Perry. Somehow the most satisfying thing would be if her god somehow screwed her over or disowned her. A punch in the face isn't good enough.

@@faxonii It's not entirely unearned - the topics of the comments under every episode so far are almost completely disconnected from the actual story and themes of the podcast, and instead just hyperfixate on fangirling over the characters and headcanons and really minor things that honestly aren't that important. I have no problem with representation of any kind, but I seriously wish everyone would stop obsessing over it every single time it appears - it's not a crucial aspect of the story.

@@f_mva idk, if Id have to guess, it'd probably in the leg or in the stomach. My reasoning is that the knife or whatever was used to inflict the wound must be low enough that on didn't notice it at first, that's why when Michael stabbed him we didn't here any struggle or something. Ik the story doesn't really care about these types of things, but I hope Michael didn't miss any major arteries, the cleanup would have been horrible, since most of the characters here seem to be a bit queasy. It's just a hunch, tho.

I went to bed listening to TMA and forgot to set a timer to stop it after half an hour, you don't know fear until you wake up to the handshake scene at 2am.
Everyone here railing on Jon for having no braincells (not saying that's _untrue_ ) and shaking her hand, but given the context of this episode it makes perfect sense. If Jon compelled it out of her, she made it clear she would kill him for real, but more importantly, he's always subconsciously followed her advice to serve his god "fearlessly and without hesitation", to retrieve vital knowledge even at the expense of his hand or even his life. His near lack of hesitation to shake her hand was just him being a faithful servant, with a side of charming dumbassery of course.
Honestly this might be one of my favourite episodes so far. The writing is always stellar, but this one felt more impactful and beautifully tied together.

(also kind of a personal fave, but sometimes i think about how they might be (or are) mutually "feeding", a limb that lets you record information, a hand, might be an important, painful sort of destruction for someone/thing like Jon here, though it's nice because it's not the most important, and he does deal with the results ok.

The casting is so stupidly good, the voice actress of Jude has absolutely the most sulky, sexy and deadly voice i have hear. Is just fits so perfectly well with her theme of burning destruction.

Jonathan doesn't seem confused by his compulsion ability, but I don't remember it being mentioned in any previous podcast. Is he just innately aware? I mean if I got burned asking a question and asked to stop "compelling" I'd be right confused and asking questions, but Jon seems to know what he's doing.
I think he found out when the Leithner (definitely spelt that wrong lmao), book guy was talking to him after he got out of the tunnels, just before Elias killed him
I would imagine it’s somewhat instinctual at this point. He’s been building up the strength of this ability for a bit now. This is just the first time the audience is blatantly told to actually pay attention to it.
The first proper, noticeable compulsion I’ve been able to note was back in “Hard Shoulder.” Daisy didn’t really want to give her statement, but she did anyway, and seemed shaken afterwards.
But even before then, all the live statement givers have been very forthcoming and detailed in their accounts. The presence of the Archivist compels the information out of them.
And we can even see the difference between Jon and someone else taking a statement. Look at how easily Melanie got into her statement with Jon, and how fumbling and frustrated she was when trying to start a statement with Martin, when she came to talk about being shot in India. (right before being given a job)
(Also there’s a later episode where all the assistants try to take people’s statements, and it’s hilarious how hard it is for them. lol)

I see a lot of ppl saying Jon’s stupid for shaking her hand (and I agree) but I also felt like he couldn’t refuse her or else she’d would just do something worse

I don't think he could help it. The drawback to his power. He needs to gain knowledge. Even if he is hurt in the process. She was willing to tell him where Michael Crue is, but she wanted him to shake her hand. He knew full well what would happen. He just felt compelled to, to gain that knowledge. At least that is how I am taking it.

Honestly, the scariest part of this episode was Jon screaming then it cutting off abruptly.
this woman literally made me feel sick in the way that she speaks, she felt like she could not be trusted the moment she spoke...

also people say there's an episode for everyone, this is mine i guess. this single conversation sent shivers down my spine, and a pure disgust that reminds me of that time i watched Dr. pimple popper for half an hour (my mom watches it and i wanted to see how long i would last)

Like, I've _been there_. Not as in "served an eldritch god-thing", obviously, but as in "I'm new to this". As in "I have just figured out that I am (a/n) _____, Now what do I dooooo?" And yeah, sometimes, in those cases, the people you turn to for advice are not the best choices. This episode makes my heart hurt in the best possible way.

he didnt shake her hand bc hes stupid , he most likely knew what was gonna happen but he did it anyway for the knowledge , his character isnt about being stupid , its about being so hungry for knowledge like when he cant stop investigating and recording , he knows its bad , but he just CANT NOT KNOW also if he didnt agree , jane would have probly burst him into flames , wich is far worse than getting ur hand burned.

From Jude's statement and previous episodes we can assume Elias knows about the Eye and how Jon is "The Archivist". Why wouldn't he- help him understand tf is going on, he's obviously serving the Eye too (With Leitner's statement of "you should want to stop it but are working with it" or whatever he said to that effect unless he's talking about an event). It's not like Jon can quit anyway. So help him understand what to do instead of allowing him to wander around hurting himself-
Also Jon knew Jude would hurt him, he just NEEDS the knowledge so badly he tricked himself into thinking he doesn't care. "I pretend i do not see, when in reality I do" kinda vibe. He may be paranoid but he's not that stupid come on guys 😭

I think I recall it was when he was talking to the old guy (the one with his name in all the books that lived in the tunnels). Don’t quote me on that tho I have the worst memory.
