Spock's Beard and Dream Theater do cross over, as SB's Neal Morse and DT's Mike Portnoy have a long history of playing together in Transatlantic, Flying Colors and The Neal Morse Band, as well as Neal's solo progressive Christian albums. They are some of my favorite prog collaborations.

The best songs are the ones that make you cry and smile at the same time. This is of them!

    It's a French Horn.

Yeah, this is the only rock song I can think of that contains both French AND English Horns (which is what we hear at the beginning). I wonder if there's any significance to using both instruments (which are very different in basically all respects, save for both being called "horns" - the English horn is a reed instrument like an oboe, the French horn a brass instrument).

Try their song June for an acoustic guitar riff to die for!

Spock's Beard music is made by progressive rock fans for progressive rock fans, and the result is so satisfying. Almost every track of all their albums is like enjoying a delicious piece of candiy. Neal Morse has such amazing skills as a composer, guitar player, keyboardist and even drummer. I love the passion he puts into his vocals, but I believe Nick Di'Virgilio had the greatest voice in the band, on top of being a class A drummer.
I am very thankful that this band, as well a Neal with his other bands, continue to create new music that is this high-level, intelligent, accomplished and just plain wonderful.

I think Dave, their bassist, played French horn on their debut album, but on these later records I think they got people with a bit more experience on the brass.

Listen to "Mood for a Day" by Yes from the Fragile album. Steve Howe is the composer. It's unforgettable. Also Saturday Night In San Francisco with Al DeMeola, John McLaughlin, and Paco Deluca. Happy listening!

Sadly, after Neal left the band, they simply were not the same. SB is still a good band, just not the same. As an album, V is great. For old proggers like myself, it feeds a lot of what I want in prog rock music. If a young person asked me what is prog rock, there are a small handful of albums I would point to in order to exemplify the genre. V is included in that short list that is headed by "Close to the Edge" by Yes.

I wouldn't even call them good after Neal left. He was the songwriting heart and soul of the group. It's not SB anymore. Just another mediocre prog band now.
