Neal Morse is definitely a hero to me, his style is so distinguished, i would definitely suggest you to check out Transatlantic too, my favourite: Stranger in your Soul. Featuring Neal Morse(vocals and keys on this song), Mike Portnoy, Pete Trewavas (bass for Marillion and one of my favorite bass players) and Roine Stoilt (guitar for the Flower Kings).

Great reaction, L33 -- thank you! I thought you'd dig this one. 🙂 Welcome to a wonderful rabbit hole!
Spock's Beard has three main eras, defined by their lead singer: the early Neal Morse era, which goes through their sixth album Snow (a masterpiece!); the Nick D'Virgilio era, when drummer Nick took over lead vocals; and the post-NDV era, after Nick left the Beard to join British proggers Big Big Train (who you should totally check out sometime, btw!). Several folks have left some great suggestions for more Beardly exploration, and I'd add "The Quiet House" from their tenth album X (natch). The way it moves from super heavy to remarkably pretty is brilliant. Cheers!

Lee: You looked just like I did the first time I heard this band. If I try to tell you even an abbreviated history of this band, what they've meant to me and the couple of times I've been fortunate enough to engage with them, musically (!) and in my professional life, I'll break the comment section. So let me start with recommendations from them first. Their 3rd album has a track called The Good Don't Last/The Radiant Is you need to hear, plus the songs In Harm's Way, Flow and June. Four of their very best. Then there is a long song suite called The Healing Colors Of Sound with about 5 other titles but its all one epic that you need to hear. After that, this record with At The End Of The Day has a longer piece that most consider their pinnacle called The Great Nothing. And one album later, their double concept record (a la The Lamb) called SNOW about an albino kid with super powers. ANY of these, plus other things from these first 6 albums should keep you busy the next year!

Drummer and backing vocals in Nick D'Virgilio, now with Big Big Train. He also did an interesting album with Neal Morse and Ross Jennings (Haken) which has a Crosby, Stills and Nash feel. Some good tunes on it. This SB line up is my fav. Neal is also in a cool band called Flying Colors, and his Neal Morse Band material is also amazing.

@@sethbrundle6506this band's sixth album was a double disc concept album set in New York City. After that, their original lead singer left and was replaced by the drummer.

Jazz, Funk, Prog, Metal, Spanish Folk..presented using a wide spectrum of instruments in a fast change of themes and patterns.
By almost any other band this would mean chaos, too much of everything.
    But this is Spock's Beard!
So everything is balanced and structured, yet far from being boring.
Everything is in its place, right there where it should be, and this in such an incredible perfection that I can't stop my eyes getting wet every time I listen to this song.

Neal Morse is the lead singer for the first 6 albums. This is the mini-epic on this album. Check out the magnum opus closing track, "The Great Nothing." Now that Mike Portnoy's back in Dream Theater, he might be too busy for anything else. But he has a large body of work with Neal Morse in Transatlantic, Flying Colors, The Neal Morse Band, and Neal Morse solo albums).

I"m surprised in 9 months you haven't posted more Spock's Beard. A good stand-alone classic is Time Has Come from Beware Of Darkness. My favorites change often, but this one is usually at or near the top of Spock's Beard songs for me. More virtuoso musicianship and lots of melodies, themes and changes crammed into a runtime that will fly by.

Been following your channel for a while but this is one of the few comments I've made so far. The Neal Morse rabbit-hole is deep and wide! He's made over 40 albums with Spock's Beard, Transatlantic, Flying Colors, The Neal Morse Band and more, many of them with his compadre Mike Portnoy. Portnoy was still busy in Dream Theater when this album was made, but you can see how theirs became such a fruitful partnership. For some of the heaviest prog-metal you'll ever hear, try The Door by Neal Morse, featuring Portnoy on drums and Paul Gilbert with a face-melting guitar solo towards the end.

I don't know if _At the End of the Day_ is their _"magnum opus,"_ but it's certainly among their best tracks. Here are three of my other favourites:
_The Great Nothing_ (if anything, THIS is their _magnum opus,_ although its 27 min. length may dissuade some listeners)
_On a Perfect Day_ (from the stage of the band where drummer Nick D'Virgilio was their Phil Collins-esque frontman, but it's absolutely one of their top songs, despite lacking Neal Morse's characteristic input)
    _Crack the Big Sky_
Any of those would be a great place to continue your exploration of this wonderful band. It still blows my mind that despite being one of the most influential American prog acts of the last 40 years (right up there with Dream Theater and Queensrÿche), none of the members of Spock's Beard has been able to make the band their principal source of income (i.e. they all have day jobs). So many people would love them...if they had ever gotten the chance to hear them. Thus, I am thrilled that channels like this one are helping fans of progressive music to discover them (and other niche bands that deserve far more attention than they have gotten).

There's a Progressive Rock band from the '70s, L33, that I believe you'll love called Argent. Their most popular song is '70s heaven called "Hold Your Head Up," and it's a masterpiece, but you MUST react to the album version, which is 6:20 long. I also love the album length version of "Thunder and Lightning." However, it's their lesser known songs that I believe influenced a lot of modern Prog. Such as "Trapeze" "Circus" "Highwire" and "Clown." Those songs sound like modern Prog.
Argent has some of the greatest keyboards in Rock history, especially in the first two songs I recommended. ❤✌

His brother Alan was on guitar & the extraordinary Nick D'virgillio was on drums & backing vocals. Nick took over lead vocals when Neal left the band in the early 2000's to go solo. Spock's Beard is one of my favorite "modern" Prog bands. This is a terrific song from a terrific album. Every song is great, but the closer is even more epic, at 27 minutes, and it's called "The Great Nothing."
However, if you don't want to go that far, please react to some songs of SB called "Feel Euphoria," from the album of the same name (you'll feel like you ran a mile, after listening to that one) or the wild "Onomatopoeia" from the same album, or the hard rockin' "Devil's Got My Throat" from the Snow album.

I find that Spock's Beard has carried on in the vein of bands like Yes, Genesis and Gentle Giant, but that their most well-known albums imparted a '90s HEAVY alternative rock sound to music otherwise written in a classic British prog rock style. I really think it works, and brings something new to a genre that is, at times, overly-formalized and derivative. To be progressive should actually mean that you innovate and experiment, and while some experimentation may fail, the best progressive bands in the world have been the ones that were willing to push the envelop and take those risks. Rush didn't become one of the preeminent prog bands in the world by playing it safe - their label wanted a more radio-friendly album (something that had some short, accessible singles that people could dance to), after their first attempt at an erudite album with epic, high-concept songs ("Caress of Steel") was an unambiguous disaster...but they followed it up with "2112," and the rest is history. Say what you will about Spock's Beard, but they have always been a band devoted to exploring what modern prog music could sound like.
