One of the hardest things about a crash are the people who immediately come up and start telling you what you did wrong. I appreciate you posting this with your raw thoughts. I'm heading into a few trackdays in a few weeks and this was a great lesson for me to remember to really get my tires warm even if it's after the warm up lap.

Gut wrenching. Good thing you have a backup car, most aren't that blessed. When I crashed my car, it set me back hard for 2-3 years. My fault because I was too depressed to do anything for the first 2 years after the wreck. I really hope you can get back up right away rather than letting it sit, whether you repair it or start with another. I'm glad to hear you're going to start ripping into it to start the process.

I hear you on the depression thing. It was tough for a while after this.

Wow just wow......... Hated to see it happen. When you were coming out of turn 2, I saw the 911 had spun out. At first I thought maybe there was oil on the track. But thanks for sharing this with us, as a novice track driver this shows the importance of tire temps. Good luck rebuilding the mustang!

Sorry to hear about the crash. It's always a risk when there's track time involved, and I'm just glad it was a low speed impact (all things considered). It's an awesome build, and really looking forward to see how you build it back even better!

Ohh man that is hard to watch, glad you are ok. Thank you for sharing as difficult as it may be. It helps us drivers who are not at the skill level you are to know that things can happen to the best of us. Count me in as a shirt buyer if you decide to do that!

Honestly this is a huge win for the decision to get a race car. Had you not picked up the Curstang, this crash easily could have happened in the Camaro. As you said, you were not driving aggressively and the main contributors to the crash (temperature and race line on the white curbing) would have been just the same in the Camaro. So instead of wrecking your baby, you wrecked your insurance policy. Most importantly it was safer for you the driver, but also this car being more structurally sound means it's more likely to be repairable. I think this kind of thing is an eventuality in racing. So glad you are uninjured and no other cars or drivers were tangle up. Thanks so much for sharing!

Cold tires, cold damp air, and a cold track surface is why you spun. Nail in the coffin was touching the paint. I still feel bad to this day for not making sure you were aware of the morning events.
Not your fault dude. Said it that day, and still say it, it's laguna in the morning.
Looking forward to getting back on track with you again!

Me too. I struggled a bit with making this video. First because it’s hard to share such a big mistake in such a public way. But also because I didn’t want to be a Debbie downer. But ultimately, I thought the better thing to do was to show my worst day and show that it’s not always sunshine and rainbows. And to maybe help someone else learn from my mistake.

Man thanks for sharing the lesson, I can only imagine the feeling. Shes definitely rebuildable since they make absolutely every piece of sheetmetal for them however going forward it would all depend what your plans with the car are.

I'm so sorry man! Dang it! I saw the dew on the window. I know laguna can be cold. You're 100 percent correct. Falkens simply need more heat than people think. What tricks us is in the summer they need to be cooled none stop and can only do 1 or 2 flyer before falling off. But I ran the rt660 for 4 years and learned a lot about it. The window is small like all auto x tires. The only tire I personally know of that you probably would have been fine was the a052. Even that needs 70 to 80 degrees in the tire to work. I ran the 3r at a gta event in 50 degrees and I had to do 3 flyers before it came in. I accidentally tested my car without a wing, it's a long story lol, and I went from a car that would understeer at the limit to a car I couldn't catch no matter how fast my hands were. So no rear wing definitely contributed to the spin. But tires needed a little more heat. After about 10 heat cycles I notice they need a little more than normal and age they need more than when new. Again sorry to hear and thanks for sharing cause important for me to see how easy this can happen.

Laguna is just scary slick being first cars out in the morning on a damp track. I’m finding more and more that driving 8/10ths is sometimes more dangerous than 10/10ths. Glad you were unscathed as that’s what matters most!

Ugh. Sorry the crash happened. As someone who’s done lots track days and raced a bit on motorcycles. It’s not a matter of “if” but “when” you’ll crash. It happens. It sucks but you learn from mistakes and it makes you faster. There’s a reason why guys were coming up to you at the other events and saying the car is too nice and it would be a shame if anything happened. As long as you’re ok physically, the car can always be rebuilt.

    • @AutoXandTrack
      @AutoXandTrack  7 місяців тому +1

Rewatching me talk about it being too nice and it going home in the same condition was kind of ironic. I had forgotten about saying those things until going through the footage.

What a bummer , glad you are OK. Sheet metal and steel can always be replaced. I have been meaning to ask you if you were going to run the VARA Big Bore Bash in November but I guess that won't be happening now. Do you know anyone at VARA that I could talk to about running my car? Again glad you are OK!

Sorry you had to experience the accident but it is how we learn. Just an expensive learning lesson. Autox is car control at the limit. Track driving is car control nearly at the limit. Road racing is car control on and sometimes beyond the limit. I pretty much skipped the track driving part and went straight from autox to road racing and there are some shunts and off road incidents in your future when you do that. Most of my learning experiences were minor offs or the minor trading of paint but I did finally have an 'Oh, Sh*t' experience and went upside down at Auto Club Speedway in turn 13. Just the 'red mist' and overdriving the car. Our races were 25 minutes long so 10-12 laps and we always ran one race a weekend inverted to let the newer/slower drivers learn to lead and other drivers learn how to work your way through the pack. I had been running turn 13 well all race but had worked my way from near last up to 4th and wanted a podium and decided at the beginning of the last lap that I would be able to pass the 3rd place car. Unfortunately I decided to do it entering the Roval so in turn 13 I got off the brakes a couple of feet sooner than my previous laps and the rear of the car stepped out a bit and into the stacked tire wall. Well, if you have ever hit a tire wall you know the tires grab you immediately and in my case actually turned me over and left me on my top. An expensive lesson, but some frame work and a new front clip and windshield and I made the next race at Infineon 4 weekends later. Get to fixing that car so you can get back out and do LS again and do it better next time.

Ah man, my first thoughts where that Porsche had spun out so stands to reason there was something on the track that caused the rear to break loose even oil on the track takes nothing to make things greasy. That said hopefully the frame rails are good or can be pulled back into shape, every thing else is just sheet metal, fiber glass, and paint. I'd give you a hand, but got my hands full with couple things here, and 135 year old house lol

Sorry to see you wreck. I will be honest with you and people should know about Falken Tires. People should not go through what you and I have, Those tires are very inconstant and poorly constructed. I have had 4 out of 7 tires come apart on me. I tracked my car in MIAMI Homestead the temp was 48 and my car did the same thing. Tire Rack warranty personnel told me the Falken 660 has the highest manufacture claims. I will never purchase their tires again,. I now race on a team and the owner told me the tires are crap. I will never buy Falken tires again. Sorry for your loss A little sponsor is not worth the time you have invested in your car.
