I could do nothing but suffer in silence as he mentioned how audiences got all excited with the first trailer but got turned down the second they knew the dinosaurs would talk. And the thing is, I love the concept of a movie with talking dinosaurs, but only if it was planned to be that way. It's one of my favorite Disney movies. But the missed potential of a dino-doc like film with that animation quality gives me mixed feelings.
There are a few “sound effects only” edits of Dinosaur scenes. All we need now is for someone to sync the music, and we can get a glimpse of how it could’ve looked as a no-dialogue final product.

Seriously nothing about the movie we got was 100% child friendly it still was pretty serious, mature and dramatic. You want generic and kid friendly bullshit there's the 2013 Walking with Dinosaurs with its poop jokes and non stop voice over.
@@kennethsatria6607 Disney's Dinosaur was very much intended for the family-friendly audience, with some elements of cheeky humor and a rather generic "don't give up" plotline. And while Kron and the Carnotaurs did give the film a touch of dark drama, there were lots of other segments that felt overly bubbly, and I personally don't think it mixed well. 2013 Walking with Dinosaurs is just worse in every way, no argument. But comparisons aside, Dinosaur had a lot of potential it didn't tap on.
Tibbet should not have gone to Disney. Instead, he should have chosen or optioned other animation studios. We know Disney will never ever accept this kind of concept and idea. Tibbet should try reconsidering his plot and concept. It's an artistic masterpiece and the story, the plot, the characters and the transition in the ending are undoubtedly creative and compelling! Honestly, Dinosaur 2000 was one of my favorite, childhood movies. But Dinosaurs by Phil Tibbet is now my current, compelled, dinosaur film, that I will pay for to watch and see how it executes well. Please, Tibbet.. reconsider your conceptual masterpiece and make that stop motion film! I want to watch it. Even though I'm the first and, currently, the only movie fan, who wants to watch your film, I'm certain and sure.. that everyone else, who had discovered your concept for this film, are interested and intrigued too. I hope you will still make this film in the future. It's not too late. We NEED and WANT a dinosaur film that is not kid-friendly. I'm sorry for the kids, okay? But it's time for the dinosaurs to entertain the matured ones, who perceive great, artistic masterpiece. Fortunately, I'm one of them.
I honestly don’t blame the crew who worked on the movie and didn’t want the dinosaurs to talk nor have a lighter tone, cuz they didn’t want to do that. They didn’t want to make a kiddie dinosaur movie, they wanted to show the dark and mature elements of dinosaurs
I’m with you partner and I pretty much agree with you that Disney should do more dinosaur movies, television series and other media but they’ll do them soon.
I wish Disney would revisit Dinosaur these days or in the future for a sequel or remake. In fact there’s a lot of Disney films like the Black Cauldron that I wish got remakes in this age of sequels and reboots. These films never did quite well and deserve a second chance to give people something different. However it doesn’t seem like Disney will ever do another dinosaur themed film ever again. With the revival of the Jurassic Park franchise and the failure of the good dinosaur, a dinosaur film by them isn’t guaranteed to be the success they would want it to be. I just realised that we really only have 2 dinosaur films from the biggest company on earth. That’s just mind boggling to me.
I genuinely believe the project would've greatly benefited from a, for a lack of a better term, "Ghibli" approach to it's story: Mundane is beautiful. Trying to force the project into these pre-existing formats and have love interests, comedy reliefs and action scenes.. just made everything feel that bit more artificial and redacted from the atmosphere surrounding the actual animals, the dinosaurs. The mystery & majesty is the biggest allure in knowing dinosaurs were once real, and art should appreciate that, instead of trying to shoehorn it into something we have conventionalized and normalized. I don't by any means dislike the final product, but it's a pale shadow of the immense potential they had on their hands. Disagreements over the dinosaurs talking vs. not talking seems to me like a culmination of these clashing perspectives.
This movie is ride of nostalgia and good feelings when I watch it. It’s just as good and holds up pretty well 20 plus years later. I love Disney’s Dinosaur like it’s a family member to me.
I'm 100% positive if they weren't talking, then an equally big portion of the audience would have been horrified to realize Disney wants them to look at a silent movie for 2 hours. Be happy no singing occurred, alright? The Lion King, now that's a true stupid story... directly photo realizing a cartoon, H-WHYY???
It seems like both Disney’s Dinosaur and the more recent Walking With Dinosaurs film had the same thing going on behind the scenes. Both were films that were meant to be visually told stories, with no voices whatsoever, and with the use some of the most amazing effects ever put to film, but then some creatively bankrupt studio executive came in and said “No, you need to make them talk and/or sing because it makes us money”, thus taking what was being made and watering it down in some way with voices and dialogue. I gotta say, though, I can forgive the Disney film, not because it’s something I have fond memories of, but at the very least the voices and dialogue were delivered with sincerity and it took itself seriously, and any semblance of jokes, while they weren’t the best, were nothing cringeworthy either. That and the voices were all unique and fun to listen to. Can’t say the same for WWD, which arguably put a lot more effort in using the knowledge known at the time (since the knowledge we had back in 2013 was a far cry from what we had back in 2000), but because of those previously mentioned studioexecusaurus boomerensis doing what they do best, we ended up getting a film with super annoying voices and dialogue that was the complete opposite: Absolutely watered down garbage dialogue with some of the stupidest most below basic jokes, all of which just looks down on its target audience like they’re society’s biggest idiots. It’s really a shame that we had this whole process going on *TWICE* and it only got worse the second time…. Honestly, we really do deserve better with dinosaurs in movies like this (and in general). I won’t lie I would like to see Phil Tippet make his dinosaur movie, without having creatively bankrupt money-eaters standing over him, or anyone who wants to try it.
16:33 This is so funny to me, because even as a kid, I thought the first 6 minutes of the movie were the best part, and everything went downhill the second the lemurs were introduced. The Carnosaurus chase sequence on its own thrilled me and had me on the edge of my seat, wondering if the little dinosaur contained within the egg would survive to adulthood if its existence was under such threat before it was even born. Disney really underestimated how many kids LOVE nature documentaries, BECAUSE of all their drama and violence, not despite it. Survival horror as a genre is super compelling, and the prehistoric world as re-imagined and reconstructed by humans minds is the best setting I can think of for such a film. What a shame that the only animation studios large enough to undertake a mature story just wanted to dumb it down "for kids." :/ Kids can feel it when adults condescend to them, and movie plot lines are no different. I certainly noticed. Bambi and Fantasia were among my most rewatched movies in elementary school; I would have adored a no-dialogue animated movie about Dinosaurs in a similar vein as presented in the trailer. Hell, I'd enjoy that now too, lol.
I agree I would love to see a sequel to this movie. In my opinion I'm upset the trex wasn't the antagonist of the film because trex is my favorite dinosaur. I like Carntaurus but trex to me would have been a better antagonist, also Carntaurus was to big. They only grow up to 12 feet tall if they wanted to use a dino that was big that wasn't trex they should have used giganotosaurus in my opinion, because they can get to 18 to 20 feet tall. I would also love to see a dinosaur film where the trex is the protagonist or a twist hero, because I'd love to see the whole blood thirsty monster stereotype flipped on it's head while still showing trex was a hunter that's not to be messed with.
@@ashtonsherrod7824 I think the reason why Disney didn’t use Trex as the Main Antagonist of the Film was because they didn’t want to make it too much like Sharptooth from “The Land Before Time” from 1988 since “Dinosaur” was already feeling too much like from the Movie & didn’t want to use have a Trex in it to make it similar to Sharptooth by stealing the same Dinosaur to put in it & wanted to use a different Dinosaur of a Carnotaurus which were 2 of them as the Main Antagonists just to make the Movie different than “The Land Before Time”. It’s my own Theory to why I believe is the real reason why Trexs was not in “Dinosaur” in my honest opinion.
Glad I found this video, I’ve been seeing a lot of videos reacting or analyzing this movie recently and I’m happy that you showed the lengthy development of this movie. I always found this movie’s production to be Fascinating and just how much it changed from a stop motion film to cgi animated film. I genuinely had no idea that two people died during the filming of the live action segments of the film, was not expecting that part at all lol. Absolutely great work! 👍
“Why did they make a big deal out of talking dinosaurs?” Because the filmmakers didn’t want them to talk. That’s it. Movies and shows without dialogue exists and most are pretty damn good. The topic of dinosaurs aren’t exclusively for kids, and people/media/companies need to stop thinking that it is. I’ll end this by saying: I grew up with this movie and I still love it. I’ve played the ps2 game and I love it. But the fact remains that what could and should have been was invalidated and changed, against the filmmakers will, is kind of upsetting
The movie would be better if they just took it seriously and played it straight as a survival tale. It was basically another land before time only with less compelling characters
This is one of my favorite movie of all time. I loved to see dinosaurs talking as a kid. It was just PERFECT. I never loved stupid princess movies this much.
The story with the 2 Brothers did sound better than the final product. Shame. The final product ended up being too similar imo to Land Before Time but with less emotion and characterization.
At around 8:00 when talking about NOT using the trex as the main villain, I’m glad they used the Carnotaurus. Rexy would’ve definitely be overused had they went that route And I fell in love with the devil horned Carnotaurus that they brought us. He was a big, mean, scary bully. It like the makes wanted to make sure that Rexy was out of our minds when watching this movie
So basically, they took a film that was meant to be experimental and for adults, turned it into another conventional kids film, and then blamed its unremarkable outcome on being too adult-oriented? The absolute nerve.
Dinosaurs having lips is true for Saurischian dinosaurs like Sauropods like Brachiosaurus & non avian Theropods like T. Rex, avian Theropods like modern birds do have beaks on the other hand, but for Ornithischian dinosaurs like Iguanodon they have evidence for beaks, so that’s why it’s still weird to put lips on an Iguanodon in that sense.
I loved this movie as a kid. I watched it over and over until my parents were too tired of the same movie. Seeing it today brings me lots of good memories and nostalgia. And as you’ve pointed out: the visual are astonishing, but taking emotions aside, the story is not the greatest. I would’ve loved to see the version in which there is no dinosaur dialogue at all… Great video mate!
It's Nice that the Main Character was a Styracosaurus (I think later this would be Eema).I think Surrey was the first Plan of the "Ancient Lemurs" ,"Surrey was like based on a Ancient Rat.(This Narrator was also used later for Walking with Dinosaurs 3D.)
Hey man, thanks for the video, really great one, hope you make more content like this. I really love this movie and i don't care what people are saying about it, I just love it and the concept art that were made for this movie. If anybody wants to find these concept art, you can go on Pinterest.
Someone looking into the history of Dinosaur should probably also try to check up on the history of this film I found on DVD about a Styracosaurus that gets separated from his herd and has to rebuild one of his own… I think he also loses some dinosaurs he’s close to when a meteor strikes if I remember right… and the film features no dialogue. I forgot what the title was but I had it on DVD before I moved.
Before I watch… I just wanna say… I don’t know if I will ever understand why people don’t like “Dinosaur”. I have loved that movie since I was a little girl…
Prehistoric planet definitely has showed that people still have an appetite for dino documentaries just as long as they are done right unlike Netflix dynasty issue
It's weird to think Disney had two chances to have their own dinosaur IP they could profit off of like crazy like what Universal does with Jurassic Park but somehow managed to fuck it up TWICE with Disney's Dinosaur and Pixar's THE GOOD Dinoasaur
I think it should also be noted, the fact that one of the directors of Dinosaur, was also behind the clustf**k that was We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (Which had a whopping FOUR DIRECTORS making the movie). So I feel that this movie was a much more improvement that before, and the director learned from his mistakes a bit.
Can’t believe Disney can’t grow a pair and show children that the world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows I would of loved to of seen the dark details to this film
Dinosaurs talking gives me brain damage. If I had the talent and resources, I would make a dinosaur epic so realistic and brutal it would give little brats nightmares. No music at all, just the sounds of nature in all its glory.
At least it's nice you were able to actually scour up more details about the many alternate storylines. Sure it does feel like a missed opportunity, but at the same time you can't really expect everything to be an original creation. I feel too many people have put their expectations too high or sometimes I feel like they want to pander to the high-elite snobs who need to think everything needs perfection or everything needs to be original. At least this movie still takes itself seriously and does know when to be intense when it needed to, and at least this was more better executed compared with the Walking with Dinosaurs 2013 film.
Don't know why the crew and audiences were making such a fit over not wanting the dinosaurs to speak. I mean it's not like you can't have a mature story with talking dinosaurs. Those aren't mutually exclusive things.
geez it seems they just axed every interesting thing in the movie but the producers were so diehard on making it on par with a land before time sequel. (singing and little seriousness)
I loved the movie we got growing up and still enjoy it greatly, but I feel as if we were robbed of all the interesting depictions and influences from extant animals that Ricardo Delgado used in his concept art. (Black Crowned Crane Ornithomimus, Wild Dog Utahraptor, Anteater Nanshiungosaurus, etc.)
You know, I loved this movie and Emperor's New Groove as a kid and I love them now, but man what would I give to watch both the early versions of Dinosaur (both the talkless one and the biblical one) and Kingdom of the Sun...
I love this movie anyway. It's relatively dark and gritty and has no singing. The soundtrack is phenomenal! It's monumentally better than the Walking with Dinosaurs movie, which I found an insult to watch.
Bro I grow up with this movie I truly wish they make a sequel to this beautiful movie especially since new dinos have been found especially Maip Macrothorax like I could see it as the next antagonist for a sequel but atlases Disney an Hollywood everyone ☹️
Dinosaur is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’m so glad that Disney made it. But the one thing that I don’t get why did people make a big deal over the dinosaurs talking?
Maybe it was the popularity of JURASSIC PARK. The hyperrealistic dinosaurs from that film gave audiences an enormous expectation in terms of what to expect from dinosaurs in live-action films. "You loved the dinosaurs in JURASSIC PARK, right? Now imagine exoerieng what their lives had been like before their extinction."
the worst part of this whole thing is that yeah, it could've been pulled off, it really could've. all the pieces were there, but disney just had to strip everything out. like i would've killed to have that river crossing scene in there that would've been amazing. it really really is a shame. i love this movie, but it was really just dealt a bad hand honestly... if only though.
when i was a small kid i really disliked the movie because of the talking dinosaurs and the human story. also the lemurs. they are in the wrong place and the wrong time. the visuals are great i give them that but these animals dont act like animals, they act like generic movie protagonists and antagonists and there is so many outdated and inaccurate details in this movie that i still believe, this is a bad movie.

Thwarted by executives that want to play it safe.
Thanks for making this. Dinosaur is my favorite Disney film but I never actually bothered to look into the making of it. This was very insightful.
Disney needs more dinosaur movies who's with me
Dinosaur Completely redeems that lion king remake they made. Dinosaur was just a prequel to that movie.
@@christianali5431 wat
I’m with you partner and I pretty much agree with you that Disney should do more dinosaur movies, television series and other media but they’ll do them soon.
We just need more movies with dinosaurs in general
@@christianali5431 some say it’s a prequel to The Lost World
well at least it wasn't as big of a disappointment as walking with Dinosaur's 3D
yep
Happy 21st Anniversary of Disney's Dinosaur 2021.
This was a great mini documentary. You should do more documentaries like this on other trouble production films.
I agree.
Dinosaur was a box office hit when it was released.
This was not the thing to watch if you're already feeling a little down....This really kicks you in the spirit!
What a shame that the only animation studios large enough to undertake a mature story just wanted to dumb it down "for kids." :/
Kids can feel it when adults condescend to them, and movie plot lines are no different. I certainly noticed. Bambi and Fantasia were among my most rewatched movies in elementary school; I would have adored a no-dialogue animated movie about Dinosaurs in a similar vein as presented in the trailer. Hell, I'd enjoy that now too, lol.
Jesus this was amazing, great work dude
Disney really should come out with part 2. One of the most underrated Disney films of all time
I agree I would love to see a sequel to this movie.
@@ashtonsherrod7824 I wouldn’t mind a film with T-Rex as the protagonist, for a change.
It was art at several stages of its production, but still, we should be thankful for every beautiful frame that did survive.
It could've been something truly incredible, but as it stands, I don't think any other film really has that feeling that Dinosaurs inspires in me.
“Why did they make a big deal out of talking dinosaurs?”
Because the filmmakers didn’t want them to talk.
Love seeing more people making videos on Dinosaurs. Thank you
The movie would be better if they just took it seriously and played it straight as a survival tale. It was basically another land before time only with less compelling characters
This is one of my favorite movie of all time. I loved to see dinosaurs talking as a kid. It was just PERFECT. I never loved stupid princess movies this much.
Good video mate, I had forgotten all about the movie. Good choice of music too.
The story with the 2 Brothers did sound better than the final product. Shame. The final product ended up being too similar imo to Land Before Time but with less emotion and characterization.
both movies are better than the newer jurassic world movie
At around 8:00 when talking about NOT using the trex as the main villain, I’m glad they used the Carnotaurus. Rexy would’ve definitely be overused had they went that route
And I fell in love with the devil horned Carnotaurus that they brought us. He was a big, mean, scary bully. It like the makes wanted to make sure that Rexy was out of our minds when watching this movie
I love that movie and its music.Childhood movie
I enjoyed this movie alot as a kid. It was easy to watch and had fun characters to root for. The carnotaurus was badass tho
This is the most underrated Dino film dude it was so good the cgi still holds up well today and the story was also great
So basically, they took a film that was meant to be experimental and for adults, turned it into another conventional kids film, and then blamed its unremarkable outcome on being too adult-oriented? The absolute nerve.
i love how they hated the dino with lips idea but is now thought as truth
Dinosaurs having lips is true for Saurischian dinosaurs like Sauropods like Brachiosaurus & non avian Theropods like T. Rex, avian Theropods like modern birds do have beaks on the other hand, but for Ornithischian dinosaurs like Iguanodon they have evidence for beaks, so that’s why it’s still weird to put lips on an Iguanodon in that sense.
The original sounds like a full version of the ‘Rite of Spring’ segment of Disney’s Fantasia.
Yeah it exists, its called walking with dinosaurs.
Yeah the story is not the greatest but that's hardly criticism as most stories aren't the greatest.
While I don’t mind the final product, had the film dealt with dialogue like the Proof of Concept Test I think that would’ve been a nice medium
This was really well done, thank you for this
god this concept art is something else. i've got to check out the book to see if it's got all this art
If Phil Tippett & Paul Verhoeven's *"DINOSAURS"* was made, who do
you think would be the composer?
Basil Poledouris or Jerry Goldsmith?
I loved Dinosaur as a kid. But now I know it could have been so much better
So much amazing lore to a somewhat forgotten film
I want to go to every other time line to see how things in this movie could have been
It's weird to think Disney had two chances to have their own dinosaur IP they could profit off of like crazy like what Universal does with Jurassic Park but somehow managed to fuck it up TWICE with Disney's Dinosaur and Pixar's THE GOOD Dinoasaur
Did not expect that floral shoppe track in the beginning
I think it should also be noted, the fact that one of the directors of Dinosaur, was also behind the clustf**k that was We're Back! A Dinosaur's Story (Which had a whopping FOUR DIRECTORS making the movie). So I feel that this movie was a much more improvement that before, and the director learned from his mistakes a bit.
Like I can see on Wikipedia, the movie was a success. It made more than the budget
The movie definitely would have been better if the dinos didn’t talk, didn’t scrap some scenes and stick with one of the old plots
still love the movie as it is, it's what awakened my love for dinosaures as a kid XD. still didn't lost hope to see a sequel. XD
I remember when PayPerView had 10 minute sneak previews.
Little did they know that was all we needed from Dinosaur 😉 😂😂😂
Can’t believe Disney can’t grow a pair and show children that the world isn’t all sunshine and rainbows I would of loved to of seen the dark details to this film
That’s old Disney they had to scare kids back then
Dinosaurs talking gives me brain damage. If I had the talent and resources, I would make a dinosaur epic so realistic and brutal it would give little brats nightmares. No music at all, just the sounds of nature in all its glory.
This movie brings back memories I watched a thousand times
Sorry for the pun, but I guess you could say that the potential went extinct
At least it's nice you were able to actually scour up more details about the many alternate storylines. Sure it does feel like a missed opportunity, but at the same time you can't really expect everything to be an original creation. I feel too many people have put their expectations too high or sometimes I feel like they want to pander to the high-elite snobs who need to think everything needs perfection or everything needs to be original. At least this movie still takes itself seriously and does know when to be intense when it needed to, and at least this was more better executed compared with the Walking with Dinosaurs 2013 film.
exactly
What can you say about the fight between Aladar and Kron?
Don't know why the crew and audiences were making such a fit over not wanting the dinosaurs to speak. I mean it's not like you can't have a mature story with talking dinosaurs. Those aren't mutually exclusive things.
geez it seems they just axed every interesting thing in the movie but the producers were so diehard on making it on par with a land before time sequel. (singing and little seriousness)
At least there was no singing here xD
Great animation of the dinosaurs! Unfortunately, geologic reality completely torpedoed any "happy ending" to these characters.
And remember what bummer the "Walking With Dinosaurs: The Movie" was? Leguizamo? At least Boromir survives in that one!!
There were more animals living with dinosaurs than people want to accept
Another example of how petty Katzenberg can be.
You know, I loved this movie and Emperor's New Groove as a kid and I love them now, but man what would I give to watch both the early versions of Dinosaur (both the talkless one and the biblical one) and Kingdom of the Sun...
11:32 Corrin from Fire Emblem Fates in a nutshell!
No matter what you guys think of the movie it's still a thousand times better than the new jurassic world trilogy
These backplates are also shot in Florida, Australia, and Samoa.
This could be a great movie...
Awesome video! Keep up the good work!
I would’ve loved to see that unused version lol
Dinosaur is one of my favorite movies of all time and I’m so glad that Disney made it. But the one thing that I don’t get why did people make a big deal over the dinosaurs talking?
Maybe it was the popularity of JURASSIC PARK. The hyperrealistic dinosaurs from that film gave audiences an enormous expectation in terms of what to expect from dinosaurs in live-action films.
"You loved the dinosaurs in JURASSIC PARK, right? Now imagine exoerieng what their lives had been like before their extinction."
If I ever have a few free years and a blender account I’m going to make a movie like what this movie should have been
That first song that came up is from Diplodocus
I want a sequel
forming a parasocial relationship with strange ventures by watching his videos
the worst part of this whole thing is that yeah, it could've been pulled off, it really could've. all the pieces were there, but disney just had to strip everything out. like i would've killed to have that river crossing scene in there that would've been amazing. it really really is a shame. i love this movie, but it was really just dealt a bad hand honestly... if only though.
7:34 That's never a good sign for any production, but especially in animation.
when i was a small kid i really disliked the movie because of the talking dinosaurs and the human story. also the lemurs. they are in the wrong place and the wrong time. the visuals are great i give them that but these animals dont act like animals, they act like generic movie protagonists and antagonists and there is so many outdated and inaccurate details in this movie that i still believe, this is a bad movie.
