For the ones who werent there at the time of Ridge Racer and Sega Rally ; these were insane back then ! Absolute arcade legend (and i talk of the place called "arcade", not the genre) Arcade stations with these games were flocked with people (including me), what a time it was !
i had ridge racer on psp back then i just cant remember which one in particular, i really liked it especially the special cars you could get after beating the game, i remember what grind it was when i was little
WTF ? Where is Test Drive Unlimited ? It's litterally the game that opened the way for the Horizon series and The Crew. Just an important game yet it's not here. Even worst than that, I read all the comments and saw that it was mentioned only ONCE ??
Loved that game. I used to just cruise around town, obeying traffic lights etc with wheel and pedals. Destruction Derby was fun too. Sports Car GT, TOCA, Simbin series, GTR etc.
Comparisions like this are very nice. Maybe add some more informatio next time. Like "clock speed of the CPU (later maybe also GPU", "memory size on disk", "memory size in RAM", ...
You got me…lol…you got me on the last game…haha..I was telling myself just before the last game how much first person racing games had evolved and the BOOM a kart game??? Lol.. yeah, you got me good!
My local arcade had a special games night every 2 weeks. Pay £5 to get in and everything was free. So many games on Daytona, Sega Rally, Out Runners and more.
God, the original Ridge Racer... now that brought back some memories, with its preloading Galaxian minigame and terrifying boss race against the #13 Black Devil. Fun Fact: thanks to everything being preloaded immediately, you could remove the game disk from the console and place in a music CD once you were in the game. You could then listen to your own music while you played Ridge Racer. It was utter wizardry back in the 90s.
My early memories were with Cruis'n USA! My gosh, Winning Run held best graphics for a few years there. Excellent 2D work! (Probably not fair that it's an arcade game, compared to the underpowered console games)
Hehe thanks for bringing such good memories of those games. I remember I had a racing game "Pole Position" in my ancient Atari 2600 as a kid back in the early 90s, that was my first race game :-)
2:48 the SEGA Rally version shown here is a graphically enhanced one, the original version looked different and the spectators on the Track were 2d images instead of 3d as you've seen there
Nice one! And this is very close to how Gran Turismo 3 & 4 actually looked back in the day on a CRTV, instead of most other videos showing new high res modded PC-Versions or whatever.
I feel like OutRun should really be included in the thumbnail if the start year is 1986. Also, I get that featuring only one game for each year means that you're inevitably going to skip over some seminal racing games (i.e. Hard Drivin' for 1989, not that I'm gonna argue with featuring Super Monaco GP instead since that game was a leap forward for superscaler graphics) but Virtua Racing should really have been the game for 1992. On the other hand, I actually do agree with snubbing Daytona USA in favour of the slightly more ambitious for the time Sega Rally.
I would like to see a video like this, but with Death Races kind of games. Basically, I've been looking for a game that I played when I was younger, and I don't remember the name😭 I barely remember that it had like powers that u can throw to ur opponents

There was a game a long time ago where you could go up behind other cars and flash your lights and race them... I remember it having the best graphics ever...
The graphics in Gran Turismo 3 look as if they were filmed on an old video camera in a good way, this is perfect nostalgia, and NFS underground 1 is absolutely yummy
ua-cam.com/video/LBSEH9GzUBI/v-deo.html If I remember, you started with a Porsche from the 50s. Wasn't my favorite cars, slow etc but it got better, faster, Porsche 911 is bae.
For me the perfect racing game is Outrun, the iconic song, the graphic (I play 2006 C2C, still holds up good to this day), the cars, the maps, everything just perfect about it.
As much as I like Gran Turismo 7 right now (though I feel like it's missing a lot and is getting stale quickly), my favorite is still NFS: Most Wanted 2005. Having it as a CAR-PG (you see what I did there?) where you can have one car, get new parts to make it much better and race against people to either earn money or take their cars, which you then get to upgrade to take on the next racer is just a fun idea. I liked NFS: Payback but it felt like it was half the game Most Wanted was. GT7 feels more natural to drive since it's more of a driving simulator rather than an Arcade racer, but I really wish they would make a Most Wanted 2005 remake (I don't know if the Most Wanted that came out in like 2012 is that, but I didn't give it a chance since I saw some bad reviews).
When it comes to Racing games there are some "highlights" that I remember. First "Pole position" C64. I loved that game back in the days. Then I remember the first time that I saw "Outrun" on an Arcade machine. That was the coolest thing that I had ever seen. And with a wheel on that machine it made the whole thing just like magic. What I particulary remember about Outrun was the sence of "speed". I had never seen anything like it before. The next highlight was first time I saw an Amiga 500 and "Test Drive". That was the first time "outrun" was surpassed for me. The next was "Need for Speed" Hot pursuit from 1998 that got me back into racing games. With a 3dFX card and graphics that looked like shiny metal and cool lights it made an impression. The next one was "Ridge Racer" on the first playstation. After that I stopped playing that kind of games (and mostly games apart from MMORPGS). My interest got back with Forza Horizon that is truly just groundbreaking. Cant belive how real they have made the world look.
Ridge Race 7 looks weird. It's grey, the city landscape is so depressing I can almost smell the burn gasoline and smog, and fell like when I used to work at an office, that is, in the mood for stop breathing forever. 10 our of 10.
Too many important games have not been mentioned, it doesn't have to be 1 game per year if there have been several notable ones. List without early NFS games is truly weird. GT1 isn't even mentioned, NFS has HP2 which was the one you could skip for sure. Mario Cart 64 should be here, and the one from SNES, too. Split/Second is magnificent. List idea isn't bad, but not adding important games (in this case) is annoying for the viewer.
When PS2 came out, I think that was the golden age of racing games. Also because the Fast and Furious Franchise kicked off (when it was all about the cars)
The ORIGINAL Need for Speed: Most Wanted & Burnout 3 > All Others 🤷♂ Whomever did was racing is NFS Most wanted clearly doesn't know how Pursuit Breakers are supposed to work. 🤣
Something a little bit new, would like to do more of these, as long as you enjoy! What next?
Well bro.... I enjoyed it! Keep up the good work!
Evolution of open world games!!
Creature collecting games!
Evolution of fighting games. Also, maybe evolution of horror games.
Sports games
Playing old games in wide resolutions, upscaled to 4K is something special
All past years: realistic cars evolving
2023: dinky mario kart cars
Gran Turismo 4, Burnout 3 Takedown and Most Wanted... good old PS2 times. I will never forget my 1000 hp red Viper SRT10 in GT4...

Well.... This is something new! And I liked it!
Man I'm kind of sad that there was no clip for any of the midnight club games
underrated franchise
Yeah those games are legendary
Great clip choices!
Test Drive 5, NFS3HP, GT3 ... Good memories... I'm glad about my childhood...
I believe Midtown Madness should be here on the list!
Loved that game. I used to just cruise around town, obeying traffic lights etc with wheel and pedals. Destruction Derby was fun too. Sports Car GT, TOCA, Simbin series, GTR etc.
midtown madness 3 was enjoyable. I played that more than halo lol.

A little sad my boy Daytona USA never got a mention. 😢
Nice video! And I love the *Vroom!* transitions!! 😃
Most of the games on this list would be classified as the "devolution" of racing games.
agree
watch on my channel racing games year by year since 1989 on real hardware

For GT7, you should have just shown a picture of their microtransaction store. That's the real "evolution" of racing games, and gaming, in general.
Sick video! I love it, please do more! The ending had me 💀
the end of the video killed me 💀
Man seeing Test Drive 5 brought back memories I even remembered that music track

Where are Burnout, Metropolis Street Racer and Project Gotham? They were technical benchmarks for their time.
Now its time for evolution of First person shooter games. and i cant wait to see B4 and CODBO2
I remember asking my brother to do the secret cheat for ridge racer where if you beat a in game mini game you got all the cars
Cool thing about racing games- you can still play games from 1997-2010 without having an eye-cancer ^^
The Ridge Race Demo for PS1 was something special
Oh man. Some of these brought back great memories.
