Kurt Russell is the coolest when he wants be. Jen, give some thought, or perhaps a poll choice, try SOLDIER. Excellent Kurt Russell film, and Jen it's in space!
@@oobrocks One of those things where you would never think of it, but soon as you know you can't stop noticing it. She also does the voice announcing curfew for the company town in Halloween III
I love this movie. Along with the Thing and Big Trouble in Little China, John Carpenter and Kurt Russell were on fire in the 80s making all-time classics.
Despite the title, this movie was filmed almost entirely in my hometown of St. Louis. In fact, as a kid I lived about 2 miles from the bridge they used for the Brooklyn Bridge (it was called the Chain of Rocks bridge and connected Missouri to Illinois over the Mississippi River). The theater where Snake meets Cabbie is called the Fox Theater and was closed and run down at the time of filming (it was restored in the early 80's and is absolutely stunning). Grand Central Station was "portrayed" by Union Station in downtown St. Louis (it too was completely restored and renovated in the mid-80's and is now a major tourist attraction). Funny story----when John Carpenter was here filming he was interviewed by a local news station. He was asked why he chose to film in St. Louis instead of New York and his answer was "because New York wasn't run down enough". Ouch! LOL
Most of the outdoor scenes were filmed in East St. Louis in Illinois. There had recently been a major fire that gave the city a very post-apocalyptic look.
The reality is you cant film in New York and make it look like the way it does in the film. Computer generated effects can do it, but that wasnt an option when this film was made.
Fun Fact: Jaime Lee Curtis was the voice of the narrator in the beginning of the film. Adrienne Barbeau also played Maggie. She was a popular horror actress in the early 80's and was married to John Carpenter at the time. Other films she was in was "Creepshow", "The Fog" and she had a starring role in "The Swamp Thing" which was Wes Craven's debut film.
@@pewburrito "Kathleen Blanchard" is not a real person. It's Jamie Lee's fake name. She was making a movie at the time with two actresses, one with the first name "Kathleen" and one with the last name "Blanchard" and that's how she got the fake name.
One extra fact, during the main shooting they forgot to film Maggie's death, so Carpenter and Barbeau called in a few members of the production crew and improvised it in their backyard.
In his early career he was owned by Disney, squeaky clean, totally G rated and was type cast as the kid next door. He went hard 180 making this movie and it was a great move for his career.
I really loved your reaction, Jen. This is a great film, yes, there's a sequel to this film, Jen, 'Escape from L.A.' and it does have Kurt Russell as 'Snake Plissken', it's not quite as good as this but it's not bad. There's a character in the game 'Metal Gear Solid' called 'Snake' based on this character. Yes, you were right, Ernest Borgnine 'Cabbie' in this was in 'The Poseidon Adventure'.
@@freddiemossberg7204 No, Snake's real name is David. He says "My name is Dave" during the Otacon ending of MGS 1 where they make a "Hal and Dave" reference to 2001 A Space Odyssey, and Big Mama directly refers to him as David in MGS 4. Iroquois Pliskin was a pseudonym he used in MGS2 when he went undercover in the Seal Team. Though Iroquois does translate to Snake in several Native American dialects, so his pseudonym was in fact Snake Pliskin. The game is very direct in stating this. Edit: Spelling
@@Adam_Le-Roi_Davis. Hi Adam, got here late for this one. Good to see you as always. I suggested SOLDIER, it's space based and Jen seems to like the lone wolf type. I am going to watch BONE TOMAHAWK see if it's a good Kurt Russell film. My sister and I would watch ' The Wonderful World of Disney every Sunday night. So we saw alot of Kurt Russell growing up. Is he very well known in the UK?
@@e.d.2096 Hi Eric, You just caught me before I went to bed. Yes, Kurt Russell is very well known over her, I love his work, I remember seeing him in things from when I was young he's been an actor all his life I think. Your suggestion of, 'Soldier' is a great one, I really like that film. 'Big Trouble In Little China', 'The Thing' and 'Overboard' are my favourites, but I also really liked him in 'Unlawful Entry' with the late, Ray Lolita.
😎👍 Beginning with "Follow Me Boys" in 1966 all the way through "The Fox And The Hound" (which came out only a few months before "Escape From New York"), Kurt Russell was mainly thought of by most people as the star of a dozen or so wholesome G-rated Disney films. This was the movie that established him as more of an adult action star. "Used Cars" (1980) is another fun quirky movie he stars in that is also noteworthy for being an early effort by director Robert Zemeckis.
Kurt Russell has SO MANY beloved roles. You'd have to go all the way back to the Disney movie he made when I was a kid: The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes. I'm not sure if that's his first lead role but it is the earliest role that I remember fondly. Then there was The Strongest Man in the World, this one, Breakdown, Big Trouble in Little China, Overboard, Tombstone and Miracle - all classic movies with Kurt in a starring role.
This was one of the main inspirations behind the Metal Gear video game series. The main character's code name, Solid Snake, is named after Plissken and certain plot and design elements are taken from the movie. The cast is great. There's a real who's who of John Carpenter alumni in this. The computer voice in the beginning was Jamie Lee Curtis.
(another) Fun Fact! Hideo Kojima was such a fan of Snake Plissken he made him the lead character of his Metal Gear series of games. There was concern that they could be sued, and the story goes that Kojima got in touch with Capenter directly and told him all about what he wanted to do. John was so tickled by the whole thing he said "Go ahead, I guarantee no lawsuits." and the rest is Metal Gear history.
He also played SS chief Heinrich Himmler (a very creepy version) in the movie The Eagle has Landed. Good movie. Also starring Michael Cain and Donald Southerland
Another Carpenter movie I'm sure you'll really love is Starman! It's actually quite different from his usual output, Jeff Bridges plays a stranded alien who takes the form of a recently deceased man and has to road trip with his widow across the country. Far as Escape From New York goes, much like Road Warrior it was highly influential on Italian genre filmmakers who went absolutely crazy with films ripping off its premise due to its success at the box office relative to the low budget
I heard Carpenter visited Russel and asked him if he wanted to play Snake Plissken again. Russel asked him to wait and returned a little later wearing the original outfit from 'Escape from new York' and it still fit 15 years later.
Loved your reactions to this fantastic movie, Jen. I recommend all movie fans should watch the original The Fog, John Carpenter's Prince Of Darkness, Starman, Tango & Cash, Soldier, Stargate and the original Overboard.
He's really cool in Soldier. Quiet, smoldering badass. I just googled it, and I didn't know that it's supposed to take place in the same universe as Blade Runner. That's pretty cool. Gonna need to revisit it.
Fun Fact for you, Jen: When Kurt Russell made "Escape From L.A." the sequel that came out 15 years after this movie, the costume that he's wearing in that sequel is the very same costume he's wearing in this movie which had no alterations done to it That gives you some idea of how well Kurt had kept himself in shape
This movie's influence on pop culture is so wide and deep now that I fear that a newer viewer might see everything as old hat. Also this is a very deliberate film in regards to pacing, quite different from the more frantic pacing in a modern action film. If a viewer can grant it that the film will yield a lot of rewatchability.
Finally...was so Excited for this one today, that I'd been listening to John Carpenter's Theme on a Loop!👍 Out of all the Movies that He and Kurt Russell made together, this is The One that I've been the Most Anxious for You to get to; Snake Plissken is Kurt's Coolest and Most Badass Character by-far! On that note, I do hope You'll also check-out their Sequel: "Escape From L.A." ('96).🤞 Fun-Fact: the Computer Voice You hear a few times here was Jamie Lee Curtis, whom (if You'll remember) also worked with Carpenter in "Halloween!"
This is such a classic movie! You gotta check out the sequel. It was panned when it came out, but that's largely because people didn't really understand what the movie actually was. But once you realize it, you'll get its absolute genius. Highly recommend you watch it!
Snake Plissken is Russell's most iconic role. Before "Escape from New York", he was mostly known for being a Disney actor (The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes, The Barefoot Executive, etc.). In fact, when Carpenter chose Russell for this role, the studio executives thought he was nuts. They didn't think Russell could play a tough badass. But Carpenter insisted on Russell getting the role because Disney also had the reputation of creating the best actors.
When I was a kid, Kurt Russell was already an iconic character when he played Dexter Riley in three movies: "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes", "Now You See Him Now You Don't" and "The Strongest Man In The World"
One of my all-time favorite films. It was a blast to see Ernest Borgnine as ‘Cabbie’. I grew up watching him play the heavy or the villain in Westerns and other Classic movies in the 1950s. One of his best was as the gladiator overseer in the 1954 film ‘Demetrius and the Gladiators’. He was as bad-assed as Russell Crowe. He became iconic as a comedic actor in the classic World War 2 sit-com ‘McHale’s Navy’ as a PT Boat skipper leading a bunch of misfits during the War in the Pacific. I just discovered that all 4 seasons can be seen in UA-cam!!!
Almost every John Carpenter movie is a must-watch. Definitely recommend his movie The Fog with Jamie Lee Curtis, Janet Leigh (Curtis’s mom), and Adrienne Barbeau (Carpenter’s future wife at the time of filming).
Calling it now. Jen's post apocalyptic cool nick name should be Vibes! She detects even the slightest music note change in music scores and is just Chill.
That's good. May I offer... "Who's that cool chick?" "Careful, pal. That's Jen Murray, mild-mannered movie reviewer, a.k.a. "Stacks" Murray, the toughest money launderer ever. Don't cross her; Snake Plisskin is a friend of hers."
I just saw my first Jen Murray show just a few days ago. I am totally infatuated with her! I love her reactions and I can easily tell that it would be a blast to see any movie while sitting next to her. She is my new favorite UA-cam personality! ❤
Just watched your review on "Escape From New York," and I couldn't agree more about Kurt Russell's iconic performance as Snake Plissken! The movie's unique aesthetic and John Carpenter's synth score make it an absolute classic. It's a trailblazer that influenced dystopian films and even video games. The ending is thought-provoking, and it's a movie that doesn't spoon-feed you answers. While it's hard to pick Russell's best role (he's been amazing in so many like "Big Trouble in Little China" and "The Thing"), Snake Plissken is definitely up there. Also, anyone who enjoys this should definitely check out the sequel, "Escape from L.A." It's not as groundbreaking but still a fun ride! Keep up the great work, Jen!
I saw this at the drive in when I was 14, I have been a diehard fan of both Carpenter and Russell ever since. Snake Plisskin is one of the greatest antiheroes ever.
It's hard to imagine now, but when this movie came out, Kurt Russell was still considered a goody-goody former Disney star (as in his "Dexter Riley" series of college comedies and family TV shows), so it was with initial skepticism that we watched his bid to become a gritty action hero. Needless to say, he sold it big time. This movie was great fun to watch at the theater when it was new.
Kurt was also a Disney teen that made 2-3 movies..."The computer wore tennis shoes", etc etc. So this movie was a far cry from what we know and liked about Dexter O'Reilly (Kurt's Disney character name)
Escape from LA is also Kurt Russell and is pretty similar to Escape from New York, both decent films. Also if you like Kurt Russell Overboard is probably his best movie :) not sure if you have reacted to that one yet but it is fun.
IMO "escape from LA" is better than "escape from new york" i saw escape from LA first, way back on VHS, i didn't know there was one before it at the time. "...you may have survived Cleveland. you may have escaped from New York. But this is LA vato. and your about to fight out that this f*cking city can kill anybody!" -Cuervo Jones
Great reaction! Great movie.. And the sequel - "Escape From L.A." (1996) - Is absolutely worth watching too. - Keep up the good work, Jen. You're doing great. 👍
So glad to see you react to this. Escape From New York is my favorite movie ever. I just love everything about it; the music, the story, the acting. And, of course, Kurt Russell in what I believe is his most iconic role, Snake Plissken. Escape From L.A. was not as good as Escape From New York, but I still love watching it. I view the sequel as a couple of old friends(John Carpener and Kurt Russell) just enjoying the ride as they made another film together. As for Cabbie(Ernest Borgnine), he was in The Poseidon Adventure. The narration at the beginning of the movie and the voice you hear speaking when Snake first arrives at the prison was Jamie Lee Curtis.
As far as iconic Russell roles? Honestly, this one. His Wyatt Earp in Tombstone. The ladies really seem to love Overboard with him and Goldie Hawn. He famously played Elvis in the movie Elvis. Other than that, he was good in the comedy Used Cars and the sci-fi movie Soldier.
The funny thing about Kurt Russell is that I don't know if he has a signature most famous role - he's just super-reliable and charismatic and you can trust him to star in basically any genre. It's great that "For a Few Dollars More" is coming next for you because Snake is very much a sci-fi version of the kind of character Clint Eastwood plays in the Spaghetti Westerns - plus both movies have the great Lee Van Cleef! Before he got established as a director himself, James Cameron worked on the photography and effects for this movie. He used a lot of ingenious low-budget tricks; the shots that look like a 3D computer simulation of New York are actually just a real miniature model with all the buildings outlined in glow tape. There's a deleted scene which was meant to open the film, showing Snake pull off a robbery - stealing blank credit cards - and then getting captured and watching his partner get killed. They cut it because it's more mysterious and badass to meet him stepping off the prisoner bus. You should definitely watch "Air Force One," as it's a really great time - perfect 90's action goodness with a great cast - plus another, similar 90's action movie on a plane which does star Kurt Russell: "Executive Decision."
Out of all the roles Kurt Russell has had and characters he has played, he admitted that his favorite of all was Snake Plissken. He is also probably the most iconic and influential character Kurt Russell has played as the video game franchise "Metal Gear" was inspired directly by Snake Plissken. There have also been references in pop culture to "Escape from New York" in movies like "Cloverfield" and even in "The Walking Dead" as well as the spin-off series "Dead City". Escape from New York is absolutely my most favorite movie of all time since I was a child, I have literally seen it over 1,000 times as I watched it every single day for years. It was my obsession. As well, I am from the St. Louis area where the majority of it was filmed and a lot of the places you see in the movie are still standing today, including Union Station where the President was onboard the train, the grand hall where the gladiator arena was and even the "69th Street Bridge" which was actually the Chain of Rocks Bridge crossing the Mississippi River. This movie is so embedded in my soul that I cannot imagine my life without it. Every time I see it or hear the soundtrack, it transports me to a special places that just lives in eternity. Snake Plissken deserves his own open-world "Escape from New York" video game. He was supposed to have his own game released several years ago called "Snake Plissken's First Escape" but the project was cancelled due to unknown reasons. All is not right in the world without Snake Plissken. The world deserves an Escape from New York video game.
I love how Kurt Russel plays cowboys in his two John Carpenter action roles. In Big Trouble in Little China he’s channeling John Wayne’s sing-song cocky bravado and in the Escape films he’s playing Clint Eastwood’s sneering grizzled tough guy persona.
I'm glad you reacted to this Jen. The name and character, Snake Plissken, is iconic all on it's own, but the fact that it's one of your dad's favorite movies makes it even better. Your dad knows coolness and supports a badass we all can like in the end. Snake Plissken was the man. If I was even remotely as cool and as tough as Snake Plissken, I'd be living the good life right about now. But it didn't happen :( I think if you're older, Snake Plissken is what Kurt Russell is best known for. However, he's been such a great actor in so many movies, so it's difficult to say. -- I'm a big sports fan, so his role in Miracle (2004) is what I remember him most for. If you haven't seen it, it's a must watch about perhaps the most incredible moment in sports, ever. -- Also, the film Breakdown (1997). I thought he did such a wonderful job portraying the character he did in this film. -- You've had so many wonderful reactions Jen, but your reaction to Kurt Russell in Backdraft, is still probably in my top 3 reaction vids by you. Not sure why, but your reaction (to the music, to the explosions, to the anxiety of not knowing what's coming next), makes this one of my favorite reactions you've even done.
Russell is in Escape from LA and Carpenter directed it. Some don't care for it but I always found it a fun watch. Air Force One is a cool movie. & yes that's Ernest Borgnine and he was in the Poseidon Adventures.
Jen, you ideally needed an eyepatch and Kurt Russell stubble to watch this! 🤣 This film was major influence on the Metal Gear Solid videogames. It’s also amusing to think Russell is doing a Clint Eastwood impression, while actor Lee Van Cleef actually starred alongside Eastwood in the spaghetti western classic, The Good The Bad & The Ugly
Kurt did a LOT of movies, even some rom-coms! A film that would never win a poll is "Soldier" which is one of my favorites. Good action, good character arc, fun outrageous story... "Overboard" is a funny rom com with Kurt's life partner Goldie Hawn!
Depending on age, people probably have different memories of Kurt. He's been acting since the early 60's. One of the few actors to have a successful career from child to adult
You remind me of when Stan Smith in "American Dad" said something like "You know what's a real miracle? Kurt Russell's career. That man gas worked steadily for over 5 decades. No lulls. NO LULLS!"
This was a ground-breaking movie in many ways. Before this, there was very little that was like it. The sequel is fun, but it was done in the early days of CGI and it really shows. This one is by far the better of the two films.
Kurt Russell was in this under rated comedy movie called *"Used Cars".* it was very funny. Kurt Russell started in Disney movies. He also did an episode of the TV series *Gilligan's Island.* Russell also started in the loose remake of the 1972 film *The Poseidon Adventure* from 2006 film called *Poseidon.* Some people thought *Escape from LA* was good. But they hated the ending. I hated the movie but loved the ending.
Kurt Russell started in Minor League baseball the 'Angels' organization before a horrific arm injury ended his baseball days, then took into acting FULL-TIME.
As somebody will have pointed out, I love that KR does the entire movie with a Clint Eastwood voice, then he does a John Wayne voice for Big Trouble In Little China. Never take a John Carpenter movie too seriously.
One of the greatest action movies ever made. It really set the standard for the anti-hero character that came along in so many other movies afterwards. Great story, great acting, great cast. Just epic all over.
Snake is famous because he's a decorated war hero who became a notorious outlaw. He's achieved near-mythical status for his ability to repeatedly evade capture. Many people think he's dead because he's probably been in deadly situations many times yet manages to inexplicably survive.
YES!!!!! My favorite Carpenter film and in my top five overall. While watching I was wondering if you'd pick up on some of the nods to Clint Eastwood and his westerns. The way Snake speaks like Eastwood's characters in those movies. Also, the actor Lee Van Cleef, who sends him on the mission, was another fixture of said westerns that you'll see soon enough if you continue watching those films. The DVD has a cut sequence that was to start the film that had the heist he was a part of. The sequel with Carpenter and Russell is fun, but IMO has too many of the same story beats as the first. It's hard to pick one Russell film. He's been acting since he was a child. His first was with Elvis, he did several for Disney, like "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes". He truly got noticed in his first movie with Carpenter, the TV movie "Elvis" where Russell played the title character.
Jen! If you're gonna cover "Escape from New York," you really need to review "The Warriors" (1979), which also takes place during a tough night in New York City! 😎🔥🥃
Escape From New York I love this movie so much, I haven't seen it on any platform in my country for a long time, thanks to your reaction video it made me remember spectacular scenes, I would love to have this movie in my collection, I hope you enjoyed the movie very much 😊✨
My bet us that his most seen role is Ego in Guardians of the Galaxy 2. He's in a lot of films, so his iconicness varies depending on what films you watch. I would say it's Jack Burton from Big Trouble in Little China. My sister would probably say it was Dean Profitt in Overboard (1987) where he gets to spar with his partner, Goldie Hawn. (They had just had their son Wyatt, who is also in the MCU in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
30:21 Yes, she got bloody...the fun fact about this short clip is that it was film in John Carpenter's garage after the film had already been completed.
This was Kurt Russell's first adult role. He used to be a child star for Disney. Right before this he did the voice of Copper in the Disney animated feature Fox and the Hound.
Fun Fact: John Carpenter had to fight to get Kurt Russell the part as Snake, since he was mostly known for his career in Disney films. The studio wanted Charles Bronson, but Carpenter felt he was too old at the time.
This is the role that made Kurt Russell an action movie star. So many great actors appear that it's difficult to name them all, but Adrienne Barbeau, James Cromwell, and Ernest Borgnine are the biggest ones. It's interesting to see these futuristic movies that are now in our past. For a great action flick with Kurt and Sylvester Stallone is "Tango & Cash", which I highly recommend.
Donald Pleasance, who played the President, was in many excellent films during his long career, and you may be tickled to know that he played Blofeld in _You Only Live Twice._ Adrienne Barbeau, while in many horror flicks, first came to fame in the long-running, 70s sitcom _Maude,_ in which she played the main character's daughter, Carol. _Maude_ was a spin-off of _All in the Family,_ and starred the great Bea Arthur in the tiitle role.
*Not to forget : Donald Pleasence starred as psychiatrist Dr. Loomis in John Carpenter's HALLOWEEN (1978) and four of its sequels. Beside John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, Pleasence also starred in John Carpenter's PRINCE OF DARKNESS (1987)...* 📀🎬📽 🔥🔥😈🔥🔥
Kurt Russel's most iconic roles were Jungle Boy on Gilligan's Island and in "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes". Oh, and being mentioned in the last note Walt Disney made before he died.
I never thought I'd see someone like music in movies more than I do but yup, you do :) The sequel is absolute cheese, not what people wanted BUT is worth checking out. (also, for more Kurt, Tango & Cash!)
One of the few movies that follows the original story almost exactly. There's a deleted scene you can find on youtube, that shows Snake at a failed bank robbery, it was meant to start the movie. There's a death that's missing( Snake kills a man at point bank range with a flare gun during the descent of the WTC) and another death that's shown but not explained.( when Snake shoots off the hand during the first chase, thats meant to be Hauk's brother) The shot of Maggie lying dead, covered in blood, was shot in Carpenter's garage after production had ended, as he forgot to shoot it during the filming. That actress was married to Carpenter, and the girl in Chock Full O Nuts was Kurt Russell's first wife. ... Carpenter keeps it in the family!
A truly phenomenal movie, and a favorite of mine. Plissken is an outstanding character. Have you had his movie "Soldier" from 1998 suggested yet? It's sci-fi too, and one that seems both underrated and a tad overlooked by most people, but is a really great movie too.
Ernest Borgnine has award-wins in his history, and he's worthy of research. He was often the baddest guy but sometimes paired with Lee Marvin, and those were some SERIOUS villain personalities. MARTY (1955) is his award-winning dramatic role. In the wonderful RED (2010 with Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Morgan Freeman - action comedy), he has a small role and is such a breath of fresh air... 1955's BAD DAY AT BLACK ROCK with Spencer Tracy trying to pay homage to his dead war-vet buddy but hometown boys - like Borgnine, Lee Marvin and Robert Ryan make it tough on ol' Spencer. Powerful film. 1973's EMPEROR OF THE NORTH follows railroad hobo Lee Marvin hitchin' on trains that Ernest Borgnine is the lethal conductor on.
Was always amused that they cast the English actor Donald Pleasence as the President. He also played the arch villain Blofeld in a James Bond movie, and a POW forger in The Great Escape.
Kurt Russell began his career as a child star in Disney films. The woman that was taken through the floor of Chock Full O' Nuts was Season Hubley, his wife at the time. He has since married Goldie Hawn for at least the last 20 years.
Cabbie is played by Ernest Borgnine. He was in "The Poseidon Adventure" but was most famous for playing Quentin McHale in the "McHale's Navy" TV series.
"Dexter Riley" is Russel's most "beloved" character. You have to watch the Disney franchise and the movies that raised his star bar. They are a lot of fun.
You can't go wrong with a Kurt Russell movie and he has been doing it since the 60's. you can go SciFi - Stargate, Soldier, Drama - Silkwood, Backdraft, BioPics - Miracle, Comedy - Overboard Disney - Dexter Riley or the barefoot executive, westerns - the hateful eight or Tomahawk, thriller - Death Proof

wow nice trivia
One of my favourite John Carpenter movies, it’s an absolute classic and Kurt Russell is always great in everything he plays.
As Jen herself once said "Nobody's cooler than Kurt Russell. That's for sure."
Snake plissken rules.
Snake Plisken...MacReady...Jack Burton.
Purest baddest assessed iconic characters in existence.
Don't forget Sgt Todd from Soldier
Evil and twisted though he may be, Stuntman Mike was an excellent character.
🤘
He was a bad ass, a bad ass coach, playing the coach’s on “Miracle On Ice, coaching the USA 1980 Gold Medal winning team 😊
I get the fan girl persona, but I've gotta stay tougher than most, grrrrr....
I love this movie. Along with the Thing and Big Trouble in Little China, John Carpenter and Kurt Russell were on fire in the 80s making all-time classics.
"Big Trouble in Little China" is chef's kiss.
Ikr? This is my Kurt Carpenter trilogy 🤘
Most iconic would have to be Big Trouble. in my opinion, of course.
Dont forget Lee van Cleef...
@@jarnopylkkanen5453 He’s awesome here, but my comment was about multiple movies and he’s only in the one.
Ouch! LOL
Thank You, I kept trying but I couldn't remember where this was Filmed.
@@paulp9274Sadly, It still has a post-apocalyptic look
I work next to the building that stood in for the New York Public Library. Always expecting to see Brain & Maggie!
The president was played by Donald Pleasence who played Dr Loomis in Halloween and Blofield in You only live Twice.
Fun Fact: Jaime Lee Curtis was the voice of the narrator in the beginning of the film. Adrienne Barbeau also played Maggie. She was a popular horror actress in the early 80's and was married to John Carpenter at the time. Other films she was in was "Creepshow", "The Fog" and she had a starring role in "The Swamp Thing" which was Wes Craven's debut film.
the narrator in the beginning (and EFLA) is Kathleen Blancard, who sounds quite close to Jamie Lee but her voice is a little deeper
The girl in the coffee shop(Season Hubley) was Kurt's girlfriend at the time, before he met Goldie Hawn.
I was still biting the heads off snakes in the early days, it's how I got my name, grrrrr....
Snakes real name in MGS is actually Iroquois Pliskin
@@freddiemossberg7204 I didn't know that, thanks for the information.
@@freddiemossberg7204
No, Snake's real name is David.

Soldier is the sleeper Kurt Russell Movie and boy will you love it !!!!!
The Duke was Issac Hayes.
Great musician and composer. Check out his classic album Hot Buttered Soul.
Also he was Chef in South Park
Gone to Xenu now...
Not to forget that iconic theme from "Shaft"!
The President was the monocled Blofeld in James Bond 'You Only Live Twice' with the hollowed-out volcano lair ...
Stargate is on my channel 👍
He's really cool in Soldier. Quiet, smoldering badass. I just googled it, and I didn't know that it's supposed to take place in the same universe as Blade Runner. That's pretty cool. Gonna need to revisit it.
@@jenmurrayxo escape from LA next 🤩
Fun Fact for you, Jen:
When Kurt Russell made "Escape From L.A." the sequel that came out 15 years after this movie, the costume that he's wearing in that sequel is the very same costume he's wearing in this movie which had no alterations done to it
That gives you some idea of how well Kurt had kept himself in shape
Kurt added a lot muscle for his role Sgt Todd in Soldier then did Escape from LA after that he got fat to do the coach from Miracle is 2004.
On that note, I do hope You'll also check-out their Sequel: "Escape From L.A." ('96).🤞
Fun-Fact: the Computer Voice You hear a few times here was Jamie Lee Curtis, whom (if You'll remember) also worked with Carpenter in "Halloween!"
Been watching this film for over 40 years and I've never thought that Cabbie might not be a prisoner before.
Had to get tough, for upcoming invasion, grrrrr
A John Carpenter must see is :
"The Fog"..my fav Carpenter flick!!
Kurt Russell was also fantastic in The Hateful Eight a Quentin Tarantino movie.
Also also, Kurt Russell was great in any movie featuring Kurt Russell...
"Who's that cool chick?"
"Careful, pal.
“Starman”
Directed by
John Carpenter
Starring
Jeff Bridges & Karen Allen
I saw this at the drive in when I was 14, I have been a diehard fan of both Carpenter and Russell ever since. Snake Plisskin is one of the greatest antiheroes ever.
Anti-hero, I'm just trying to survive, grrrrr
It's hard to imagine now, but when this movie came out, Kurt Russell was still considered a goody-goody former Disney star (as in his "Dexter Riley" series of college comedies and family TV shows), so it was with initial skepticism that we watched his bid to become a gritty action hero. Needless to say, he sold it big time. This movie was great fun to watch at the theater when it was new.
"Your the Duke! 💥💥💥💥💥you're the Duke!💥💥💥💥💥 A number one " - Donald Pleasence. Awesome fun content thank you
Kurt was also a Disney teen that made 2-3 movies..."The computer wore tennis shoes", etc etc.
Overboard is great. Pitch perfect comedy.
While Overboard is a great movie I would like to respectively submit that Backdraft was his best film
@@cclapew Different genres, so not comparable. Overboard was a remake of a European film.

IMO "escape from LA" is better than "escape from new york"
i saw escape from LA first, way back on VHS, i didn't know there was one before it at the time.
"...you may have survived Cleveland. you may have escaped from New York. But this is LA vato. and your about to fight out that this f*cking city can kill anybody!" -Cuervo Jones
First movie I watched with Kurt Russell was “The Computer wore tennis shoes“, a Disney movie.
We got Carpenter. We got Russell with an eye patch. We got that guy from the Spaghetti Westerns. And we got Jen!
I'm super excited! 🍿
But it didn't happen :(
I think if you're older, Snake Plissken is what Kurt Russell is best known for.
I saw this in 1981 in the movie theater when I was 13
Depending on age, people probably have different memories of Kurt.
He also did an episode of the TV series *Gilligan's Island.* Russell also started in the loose remake of the 1972 film *The Poseidon Adventure* from 2006 film called *Poseidon.*
Some people thought *Escape from LA* was good. But they hated the ending. I hated the movie but loved the ending.
Kurt Russell started in Minor League baseball the 'Angels' organization before a horrific arm injury ended his baseball days, then took into acting FULL-TIME.
Isaac Hayes was the Duke of New York.
He did well too
Another great reaction Jen, Snake Plissken is a total 80's icon. One of Kurt Russel's most iconic roles IMO.
"This is Snake. Colonel, can you hear me?"
A Classic action movie from the maestro John Carpenter!!! The music is fantastic as well.
I remember seeing this in the theatre and was blown away. Bought the soundtrack afterwards.
YES Escape from L.A. is a fun ride, you should also check out Soldier or another Kurt Russell adventure. Awesome reaction as usual. :)
Did you notice that the president was also Blofeld in You Only Live Twice?
Kurt Russell played Copper in The Fox and the Hound.
That's my best Kurt Russell tidbit.
30:21 Yes, she got bloody...the fun fact about this short clip is that it was film in John Carpenter's garage after the film had already been completed.
You may want to watch "Overboard" It has Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in it. It's a comedy/romance, it came out in 1987.
This is such an iconic movie 😊
@@Bill-en7kw Yes. I stand corrected. Don't know what I was thinking. DUH
Donald Pleasance, who played the President, was in many excellent films during his long career, and you may be tickled to know that he played Blofeld in _You Only Live Twice._
Adrienne Barbeau, while in many horror flicks, first came to fame in the long-running, 70s sitcom _Maude,_ in which she played the main character's daughter, Carol.

Kurt Russell is also fantastic in Tarantino's "Death Proof". He's such a talented actor.
15:50 Cabbie was no criminal. When the feds had New York evacuated, Cabbie wanted to stay. They told him, "ok, but you'll be on your own".
Kurt Russel's most iconic roles were Jungle Boy on Gilligan's Island and in "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes". Oh, and being mentioned in the last note Walt Disney made before he died.
Yes he was in the posiden adventure. It's Earnist Borgnine.
This was Kurt's makeover from Disney Kid to Action Hero, and set up his roles in "The Thing" and "Big Trouble in Little China".
Russel's most beloved role? Hard to say. I remember him being pretty lovable in "Cap'n Ron", and sadly endearing in "Soldier".
I never thought I'd see someone like music in movies more than I do but yup, you do :)
The sequel is absolute cheese, not what people wanted BUT is worth checking out. (also, for more Kurt, Tango & Cash!)
For comedy with Kurt Russell in an eye patch check out Captain Ron.
One of the few movies that follows the original story almost exactly. There's a deleted scene you can find on youtube, that shows Snake at a failed bank robbery, it was meant to start the movie. There's a death that's missing( Snake kills a man at point bank range with a flare gun during the descent of the WTC) and another death that's shown but not explained.( when Snake shoots off the hand during the first chase, thats meant to be Hauk's brother)
The shot of Maggie lying dead, covered in blood, was shot in Carpenter's garage after production had ended, as he forgot to shoot it during the filming.
Cabbie was played by the iconic Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine. Yes, he was in Poseidon and many many other great films of the 50s-90s.
Was always amused that they cast the English actor Donald Pleasence as the President. He also played the arch villain Blofeld in a James Bond movie, and a POW forger in The Great Escape.
Great reaction as usual Jen. Kurt Russell and John Carpenter are a dynamic duo. And yes, Air Force One with Harrison Ford is a must see!
Kurt Russell began his career as a child star in Disney films. The woman that was taken through the floor of Chock Full O' Nuts was Season Hubley, his wife at the time. He has since married Goldie Hawn for at least the last 20 years.
Snake Plissken is one of the best characters of all time.
So my iconic Kurt movie would be Overboard. I watched that one so many times
His most Iconic character was this or Jack from "Big Trouble in Little China". But watch Tango & Cash with him and Stallone.
Cabbie is played by Ernest Borgnine. He was in "The Poseidon Adventure" but was most famous for playing Quentin McHale in the "McHale's Navy" TV series.
I was 8 years old and sat with my dad watching this movie one night when I couldn't sleep. To this day dysotopia is my favourite genre.
"Dexter Riley" is Russel's most "beloved" character. You have to watch the Disney franchise and the movies that raised his star bar. They are a lot of fun.
Thanks for just bein awesome Jen!
