- Saved from the deleted upload from about 4 months ago. Unfortunately I cannot remember the channel name, but thanks to them for the video. What makes it unique is that it's a little more uncut than the one on MTV News by 5 minutes. Starting at 4:53 and ending at 21:50 is all they have. So there is a chance this one gets removed without my volition as well. Watch it while you can.

David has a voice that is always 'good food for the ears'...This guy is sorely missed.
I strongly agree with you. Something about his voice is so calming and his personality and everything, god I could listen to him talk all day he’s such a lovey warm hearted person that was always intelligent and oddly attractive. And till this day, I still miss him.
@@DivineAdmire I am happy that I 'found' him way back in 1969, first listen to Space Oddity and I was hooked. An incredible artist, musician, singer, songwriter, actor, painter, name it...And yes I will always miss that guy. How happy to be around while he was too..
David Bowie was always so polite and charming, even when he was quietly seething.
David is so heroic, standing up to racism. What a wonderful human being.

I owe to David Bowie much of my fluency in English for having listened so much of his witty warm voice in interviews, statements, comments..
He was extremely articulate, intelligent and sincere.
This legend called MTV out on their racism back in the day. What is amazing two of the biggest music artists of all time Prince and Michael Jackson were not really welcome on MTV in the beginning. David Bowie was a brilliant man RIP genius.
Yes, he was so smart. To defend MTV a little bit, they decided their target demographic was basically 13 yr old Van Halen fans. Now, I assume they're still on TV, but last time I watched it they've done another absolute u turn and now their target audience are Beyonce and Kanye West and they would hardly never play a Santana or Aretha Franklin video or anybody that was less "poppy."
So stations that play music videos are still identifying their target audience and catering to that demographic.
I also just want to point out that Mark was such a terrible interviewer! A genius like Bowie deserved better.

Michael Jackson became the bestselling artist of all time, because of Thriller, so he didn't pay attention to the naysayers. But, yes, in general, you didn't see or hear any other black musicians, maybe some vocalists on MTV

MJ was pretty much the BIGGEST thing in 1983 and EVERYONE (all ethnicities), teens to 30-year-olds, was asking the same thing: why wasn’t he on MTV. MTV pushed back hard then finally caved to public pressure. Remember it like it was yesterday.
The ultimate chameleon. In his music, his personas, and the people he chose to work with. Greatest ever. And so elegant in his disagreement and calling BS.

Love him! Bowie’s greatest period of musical recognition came from Black producers and musicians he worked with like Luther Vandross who was the musical arranger on Young Mexicans and helped co-write it. Also Nile Rodgers producing the albums he is debuting here which MTV loved to play ironically 😂

David is so gorgeous here. And as always so eloquent, intelligent, much smarter than his interviewer. And i've always loved that bit where he takes MTV to task. The look on his face is so penetrating and blatantly says 'You're full of sh*t and your racism is showing'

Bowie was right on the mark regarding race and MTV back then. I loved the station at that time, but one would have to be blind or in denial if they believed black artists were getting the same airtime as white artists.
The thing was, white musicians discovered non-white players, and singers, incorporating some musicians and their style, but no way were they going to give up their spot

Interesting. Bowie's question was revealing about what music got played or what gets played on MTV. Mark Goodman was who at MTV ?
Don't you find it strange that the interviewer never shows face, as if, he raised the race question before and he did not want any face recognition...
The interviewer was an MTV VJ. He was on MTV multiple hours a day. This raw footage is just from a single camera that was focused on Bowie.
Interesting how the MTV host liked blaming their decision not to play black artists on middle America. When THEY (MTV) made the decision.

Aretha Franklin said it best upon receiving the Grammy: "I'm so happy I could kiss David Bowie!" She could see right through his pretentiousness.

Bowie needed to look at the fact MTV was new! and showcased allot of British artists that would never have gotten aireplay before! also new wave! it was new and trying a new format!! Hry they didn't play christopher cross or ABBA. they didn't play Jim Croce,, james taylor either so what!
Stop it. They’ve could’ve played black artists in the beginning if they wanted to. Black American artists made videos at that exact time as well that weren’t aired. There are black British artists whose videos weren’t also aired. You’re talking about specific white artists when the topic is the network only playing white artists period. They may not have played James Taylor but they played Neil Young, Stevie Nicks, Pat Benatar, etc so the White artist 👩🎤ratio was still 💯 so explain that fact.
I appreciate artist like Michael Jackson and prince who broke down racial barriers with there incredible music
