I knew it would be Donna’s mind wipe at number 1. It’s so tragic. One thing that hits me about it that you didn’t mention was the juxtaposition with Wilfred’s joy as he skips through the house to answer the door because Donna’s come home, only to be met with the Doctor collapsed on the floor clutching Donna in his arms saying “Help me”. The doctor’s vulnerability is not something we often see.

John Smith desperately wanting to stay with Joan Redfern and not go back to being the Doctor in "Family Of Blood" should be on here. The sense of loneliness and wishing that it didn't have to be is clearly a real part of the Doctor--a part he keeps buried, but in that situation it couldn't stay buried. The Doctor's life comes with a price, and that scene showed part of that very well.

The line with him asking "What sort of a man" wouldn't have factored falling in love as a potential factor into his plan...I dunno, something about the way Tennant delivers that line, the face, the body language, all of it just breaks my heart and is the absolute high point of series 3.

Dalek - when the Dalek can't accept it's new life and asks Rose if she's afraid.
    Father's Day - Pete's goodbye and death.
Bad Wolf/Parting of the Ways - the Doctor sends Rose home and Rose talking to Jackie about Pete.
The Girl in the Fireplace - the letter.
Army of Ghosts/Doomsday - the Doctor loses Rose and that scene on the wall.
Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead - River's death (again, more powerful knowing her full story and watching after THoRS).
Turn Left - the whole episode is depressing and it's wonderfully done. Not sad, per se.
    Stolen Earth/Journey's End - Donna's memory wiped.
The Waters of Mars - Brooke's backstory and her children's future, and when Steffi dies watching videos of her children.
Vincent and the Doctor - "one of the greatest men who ever lived".
The Girl Who Waited - when Rory can't choose.
The Angels Take Manhattan - Rory and Amy jumping off the building.
The Husbands of River Song - its bittersweet ending.
World Enough and Time/The Doctor Falls - the whole Bill scenario and the Doctor "hoping there would have been stars".
All in all, Doctor Who can be very depressing at times.
Bonus: P.S. - just the whole thing, really.

When Doctor locks out of the TARDIS the older version of Amy in The girl who waits is just a killing. Especially when Rory is talking with her and she is asking him not to open if he loves her cause if he was opening she would go in and Rory tells the Doctor "you are making me like you why are you making me like you". Personally I find that moment into the Top 5 but still great choices

One of my saddest Dr Who moments is when the doctor finds out the Brigadier had died. The Doctor had forgot that humans have a short life span, and tomorrow might be to late. Just the slight shock on the doctors face made the scene.

I think the one that hits me the hardest is Vincent and the Doctor, partly because I myself struggle with mental health, and because I have friends that struggle with it, I have lost a friend who struggled with it. And coming out of a time where mental health is still very much a taboo, and not very well understood, they handled it with such grace and truth, they show the good part and they show the bad parts of the life of a man who is unwell. On top of that is something that is so common; not believing in yourself, this is an artist who is revered as one of the greatest artists of all time and he hated himself and his own works, that is so true and so common. I will forever appreciate how they handled this episode.

I am with you there, I suffer mental illness to and it was a very moving episode, we need more like this to show the world it is legit and maybe even drop some research from IRL to tell people that physical, sexual and verbal abuse does actually damage the brain physically as well which can lead to mental health issues, when people say they are damaged it is actually true. It is just invisible to anyone without access to high grade medical scanners.

That's probably the episode that has gone up the most in my estimation from initial viewing to rewatches. As I mentioned, I kind of didn't really get it the first time I saw it (thank goodness I wasn't doing episode by episode reviews at that point.) But I feel in many ways it shows an understanding of depression, it's impact on those who suffer those who love people with it, that is hard to find anywhere else. It's insightful without ever being exploitative.

    • @humanmetacrisis9084
      @humanmetacrisis9084 7 років тому +2

Council of Geeks I suffer from generalized anxiety disorder and severe clinical depression. That episode gave a gave to the struggle in the sense we don't just lay there wallowing in self pity. We have moments of happiness. Of love. Functionality. Even with him falling in love with Amy and wanting a bunch or ginger babies, he was still hurting. The thoughts never left him. Seeing how much he was loved and adored and the impact it would leave on the world, it couldn't save him. That really is what it's like everyday. As much as I wake up looking forward to seeing my guy, I still have that moment where I feel, damn....I woke up today.
I appreciate more than I can articulate it gave a face to mental illness without it looking like a monster. Most people hear mental illness and are instantly on guard like we are going to snap at any moment and cause them harm. There are a few unfortunately at that point. But most are harmless people you already know and love who just silently drag the boulder with them because they know most likely they will be misunderstood.
Thank you for seeing the significance of this episode. Thank you for seeing the bigger picture. Thank you for your growth, understanding, and compassion.

The "who I am is where I stand, where I stand is where I fall" speech and the scene where Twelve gets gunned down by the cybermen in the Doctor Falls got to me. It's not only seeing a character that I've grown with over three series and become invested in going through all that, it's that he's chosen to do this to himself. He goes up against impossible odds, knowing that there is no way he will survive this for children that may not all escape or live for very long even if he does this. And he does this because he knows it's the right thing even if it doesn't work.

The saddest moment for me had to be the speech 11 gives in the rings of Akhaten. We truly see an old man trapped in a young man's body and as the viewer we know how much he has been through since series 1 of the soft reboot and the song in the background could be interpreted as being about him.

    10. Lady Cassandra's death (New Earth) - Say what you want about this episode, but it honestly choked me up to see Cassandra dying in her younger self's arms while the latter cries for help. It just does something to me.
    9. The Master's death (Last of the Time Lords) - Just seeing the Doctor holding the Master as he died and telling him to regenerate.
    8. Clara's death (Face the Raven) - It always gets to me when she says goodbye to the Doctor and goes into the street to face her death. And the fact that the Doctor is mourning her death for a long time while in the confession dial just gets to me.
    7. Vincent's death (Vincent and the Doctor) - same reasons as in the video. And the song by Athlete really doesn't help.
    6. The Ood song (Planet of the Ood) - It just killed me to see the Ood sitting in that cage and essentially waiting to be lobotomized.
    5. The hymn on the motorway (Gridlock) - I always blubber like an idiot when I see everyone holding hands and singing with tears streaming down their faces.
    4. Idris' Death (The Doctor's Wife) - It gets to me seeing Idris and the Doctor cry like that.
    3. Bill's cyber conversion (The Doctor Falls) - Same reasons as the video.
    2. The 8th Doctor's regeneration (The Night of the Doctor) - I found myself empathizing with the Eighth Doctor's feelings of despair when he chose to regenerate. He wanted to avoid the time war, but ended up being dragged into it anyway. Just seeing one of the nicest incarnations of the Doctor get utterly broken like that just killed me.
    1. Bill being tested (Lie of the Land) - I know she was just being tested, but just seeing Bill get betrayed by the Doctor was utterly heart-wrenching for me to watch. He was her last glimmer of hope and the look on her face just sold it for me. To be honest, I thought she was going to shoot HERSELF with that gun.

Counting out Classic Who really leaves out some really sad moments that get to me. For example, at the end of the First Doctor's episode "The Massacre" the Doctor is left alone in the TARDIS for the first time, and there is this heartbreaking moment where he just sits there feeling abandoned and useless, and also isolated from his people as he wonders if he should just turn around and go home, but then realizes he can't even do that. I had never felt so terrible for the Doctor. The end of Earthshock is tragic as well, Susan's goodbye in "The Dalek Invasion of Earth"... so many moments that have more effect on me than much of NuWho.
I will say that in NuWho, Donna's goodbye really hit me. The idea that the best days of her life were now gone, and hearing Wilfred cry that she was better with the Doctor was tragic.

  • @barney9456

Donna is my favourite character and such a sad character, in spite of having so much fun and humour and wonder, she was also quite vulnerable, for all her shouting at the world and sarcasm she doesn't believe she is as important as everyone believes she is and then is ultimately denied a choice and has all that joy taken away, once again the world knows how great she is or the wonderful things she did, but she never will

I felt that his regeneration was selfish, and was offensive to the next doctor. He made it out to be like he was going to die and that the next doctor wasn't really him, even though he has regenerated many many times before and this one would be no different.

    1) Vincent and the Doctor. The scene in Le Musee d'Orsay chokes me up EVERY TIME! For me, it is the realization that someone who has seen himself as such a madman in life, in this one particular moment, is given solace that he did so many beautiful things that live on after his time. Just beautiful and it chokes me up every time.
    2) 11th Doctor's regeneration: "We all change. We're all different people all through our lives. And that's ok. That's good. You gotta keep moving. So long as you remember all the people that you used to be." This is how not just the Doctor changes, but how we change in life too. People and things come and go and regardless, you change because of every single event that happens in your life. When this first aired, I choked up immediately because I was going from one important point in time to another. Plus, well, Matt is regenerating.
    3) The Doctor Falls: "I do it because it's right! Because it's decent. And above all, it's kind!" The humanity of 12 shows here. Despite his old school Doctor vibe and Scottish crossness, 12 made me choke up here. He's helpless because he can't save Bill, but despite this, isn't trying to solve things out of anger or revenge. He stays true to he is. Going to be gut wrenching to see 12 regenerate.
    4) Doomsday: The scene you explained gets at me but the beach scene is more personal for me. At a too late moment, to finally reveal you love someone, but can't make it work at all. That's what Rose was doing. The one you can never have just hits very close to home.
    5) The Wedding of River Song: River has a meltdown at the end about the Doctor not loving her. Honestly, 11 showed at times a bit of neglect in showing how he truly felt about River because he knew what her fate would be. 12 matures especially after he's present in hearing the Doctor never goes around falling in love. He doesn't get mad or show emotion in all of this, but proves her wrong by just saying "Hello Sweetie."
    6) Journey's End: You did a really good job summing up exactly how I feel about Donna getting her mind erased. An addition to this, sad 10 in the rain about ready to leave chokes me up.
    7) Logopolis: 4's death always is a macabre way to go for me. Tom Baker's big grin flashing in this scene is the saddest big grin I've ever seen. He knew his death was already impending, but just that subtle grin followed by "It's the end, but the moment has already been prepared for." makes me lose it.
    8) The Girl in the Fireplace: One of the more classic cases of "Too late to save" in my opinion. Madame de Pompadour was waiting for the Doctor again, but the timelines didn't sync up when he returned.

    • @DistractedGlobeGuy
      @DistractedGlobeGuy 7 років тому +1

I always thought of the Logopolis scene as a triumphant one. It's terrifying when all the villains' ghosts are berating the Doctor, bit then it completely reverses the tone with all the companions urging him to keep living.

One of the saddest moments for me personally is Master's death in The Last of the Time Lords, just because of how much I pity the Doctor at this moment.
He clearly felt all alone in the universe, even with his companions. When he met the Master he, beyond all reason, hoped not to be anymore, and when this hope is wrenched away, ypu can feel all of his pain and loss and sense of hopelessness, that I can't help but tear up.

I totally respect your list, but I would also like to mention...Rose orders to Dalek to self-destruct in "Dalek." Upon finding out the Dalek absorbed her DNA and saw it "evolve" into new thoughts of compassion, beauty, hope...Rose had to feel a bond that her simple touch had expanded it's views to transcend the evil it was.
Then the Dalek rejects it and says that "evolution" is why Rose must order the Dalek to kill itself. Her expanding of the Dalek's consciousness in so many positive ways has been ruled an abomination. Further more...the Dalek can't unilaterally self-destruct, he must be ordered to by the one who had those positive effects on the Dalek. Imagine giving someone good advice and they follow it and becomes happy, only to decide they can't be happy. Now add a DNA genetic bond to that.

[Spoiler Alert] Human Nature / The Family of Blood
These moments (at least, the ones I've seen; I haven't seen anything after Capaldi's first series) are great picks, and I would put most of them on a top 10, too.
I would also include the scene from the aforementioned episode where, at the end of the second half, John Smith is struggling with the idea of opening the fob watch and essentially erasing his identity in favor of The Doctor's. Something about Tennant's performance just struck a deep nerve in me, and I definitely choked up. I think I liked it for similar reasons to the Donna moments you included: realizing that you're gonna die but that you have no choice and that you have to die for the greater good. Even though Smith remains as a part of the Doctor's personality, his identity as an encapsulated individual is gone as a result. The nurse's reaction to the Doctor afterward was also powerful (including stating how much braver Smith was), but not like the struggle Smith had to go through.
That's also the scene that cemented David Tennant in my mind as a great actor. (Still haven't seen his Hamlet!)

I was expecting Amy (and Rory's) death to be somewhere on the list. How Matt Smith reacts just breaks my heart. And seeing how Amy would undoubtedly rather die than never see Rory again. And on that same note, in Amy's Choice where Amy decides that she would rather die than live in a world without Rory. Heartbreaking.

Oh, I can’t believe Amy choosing to turn away from the angel, to tell the Doctor goodbye, isn’t on this list. The choice she made is heartbreaking enough, but the fact that she used her last second just to see his face one more time...ugh. That whole conversation, “I will never be able to see you again,” her sobbing, the way he just....shatters, completely, when her name appears on the gravestone....dude didn’t even WANT another companion after....

Given how much I enjoyed Tennant at the time and was skeptical about Smith, I'm surprised that "I don't want to go" didn't hit me harder at the time. I mean, it was still rough, but honestly I think his moment with Joan's grand-daughter at the book signing struck me as sadder. Not entirely sure why that is.

The moment with Wilfred and the gun hits my dad really hard even without seeing more of Wilf and 10 than that single episode, it is such a powerful moment and episode.
I know a moment that really hits me that you didn't mention is the scene with Danny Pink as a cyberman in the cemetery because of what is going on inside of and between all three of those characters (Clara, Doctor, Danny). It's just so well done and heart wrenching. It's not my own #1 saddest moment, but I thought I'd toss it into the comment section regardless.
As to my own #1 saddest moment, that's actually the scene where 10 comes to realize just how he's going to die, right after his own moment of hope that he might live, and goes through his own series of emotions about it before, to make it even sadder, Wilfred (my favorite character in the series period, btw) has to watch what happens, gains a bit of hope that he's wrong and then loses that hope and once again finds himself unable to help 10 when he knows 10 is suffering deeply. It tears me up. Think about it, after all. Wilf's motivation through that entire episode (after the talk in the cafe) is to help then save the Doctor, so to ultimately be the reason the doctor dies then _still_ be unable to help him... Brutal.

  • @1985Cyrus
    @1985Cyrus 7 років тому +3

Donna was even more brutal due to the fact the Doctor has a choice, let his friend die or let her live but never be able to be her friend anymore and lose everything they had, it was 2 knives in the heart for me, one for Donna and one for the Doctor.

I have just started watching doctor who ( started with season 5 sice that is whats on netflix, no 1 - 4 ) I love and adore the 11 doctor even though i have not seen any others :) The Amy/Rory scene killed me since it was so sad, not that they grew old together and died ( everyone dos that) But the fact that the Doctor was left behind unable to save them or help them. I loved the chemistry Amy and Rory had with the doctor, it was so real, like watching old friends :) I will watch all of doctor who, but the 11 doctor will always be special for me :) I think my fav episode is the first where he met amy :) “900 years of time and space and I've never met someone who wasn't important.”

Classic Era must be the Doctor all alone after Steven leaving. Just listening to the Audio runs chills down my spine, the doctor sounds so defeated and hollowed out. And to top it off he even considers going home, just to realize the next second that he never ever can, and they would regenerate him on the SPOT (ie. kill him).

The moment that gets me comes from End of Time part 2, @ Donna's wedding when 10 gives Wilf and Sylvia the lottery ticket that he bought from money he went back in time to borrow from Geoff Noble. The look on Donna's mother face breaks my heart every time I see it. Honorable mention: The look and scream from Ten when Rose is pulled towards the void in Doomsday. Eleven getting choked up when Clara mentions Trenzalore from The Name of the Doctor, 'are you sure it was Trenzalore?' Ten coming back for Madame de Pompadour in Girl in the Fireplace to find out she has died. The King asking Ten what she wrote to him, and Ten just silently putting her letter in his pocket. Amy Pond and Rory's death scene.
The Doctor finding out the Brigadier had died.
The Doctors final time with River Song.
My final one and the saddest was Donna's fake life and how she thought everything that was stored in her library was fake including her husband. Only turns out her husband was real and he goes to shout Donna but his stutter plays up and he goes 'D...D...DONN!!' and hes zapped away never seeing Donna again as she goes away thinking he never existed.

I have to admit to have cried in the BadWolf final scene of Doomsday, and I cried again in the Time of the Doctor. However, when I think of an episode that struck me so powerfully, not only from sadness but horror - the whole package... and I know I'm a weirdo for this choice but: Journey to the Centre of the Tardis.
I cannot stress enough how that episode stuck with me. More than Midnight, more than Vincent and the Doctor, as weird as that sounds, considering it's not as strongly executed... And it's not particularly sad, as a story. It's the implications. I always feel like, if you think about it a little too hard, you are going to be in that place forever.
Not sure the order, though. Donna's mindwipe and Heaven Sent realization moment are right there with this one. Besides, there were so many powerful moments in the series...
However, if I could add the specials and not just the core series, the number one spot would be taken by the 11th Doctor meeting Clara as a kid, talking about how he couldn't save Rory and Amy.

This was a good list and i agree with most but personally Girl in the fireplace for me will never fail to make me weep. I'm not sure what it is about the episode but it will always be the saddest for me.

Great list. I might have put Wilfred and the gun at #1 and made #2 the scene in Family of Blood where John Smith must be convinced to become the Doctor again. As Martha is my fav' companion I'd also find room for her goodbye - probably in place of Donna being pulled out of the simulation. I just feel both very sad for and proud of Martha at the same time.

Interesting choices. This list was pretty solid, but I would've put Father's Day, The Girl Who Waited and Clara's Death/Heaven Sent/Hell Bent on here as well.

Nope, because out of Heaven Sent and Hell bent only part 1 was GOOD. Hell bent was utter SHIT

It was well said, where you pointed out how much the saddest moment list will be subjective. Possibly far more than most lists.Like you, the river dying in the library wasn't as sad originally, as it was in a rewatch. Your number 1 with Donna was my number 1 from the moment I first watched it, until I watched this youtube video, and was reminded of another. When Amy lost her baby in a good man goes to war, I found horribly sad, but I wasn't a father yet when I first saw this episode. I have since lost my infant son. When Amy is holding the baby, and it literally bursts into goo in her hands. Her scream of pain and horror. I couldn't even get though your video on the first attempt when you brought this up.

There's nothing I can possibly say to express sympathy in a way that doesn't feel trite... but I still feel the need to say I am so sorry for your loss. It hits me hard as it is, and I can't imagine what it would do to me under your circumstances.

I appreciate your kind words, and I do not consider it trite at all. It is something that I have been working through over the past couple of months. Trying to get into a regular routine, which includes watching you tube on lunch. I try to keep my comments light hearted, but for this video it seemed appropriate to add context to my opinion.

    My top 3 are:
    3: Vincent and the Doctor
2: Rivers death in the library
1: The taking of Donnas memories.
My #1 pick is largely because I have had memory loss issues and lesions in the brain. The... whole scene... removing the growth she had... it just killed me. Donna is both my least favorite and my favorite companion (with Bill a close second for favorite.). She is my favorite because of the growth she experienced as a character. By the time she was forced to leave, it ripped my heart out.

You know, there are plenty of sad moments in the original series as well (15 because I just can't narrow it down):
    15. Adric's death
    14. Tegan's exit
    13. Polly and Ben's exit
    12. the ending of Survival
    11. 4th Doctor's regeneration
    10. Peri's death
    9. Jo's exit
    8. the ending of The Massacre
    7. 3rd Doctor's regeneration
    6. Sarah Jane's exit
    5. Romana being recalled to Gallifrey (the opening of Full Circle)
    4. the ending of The Daleks' Master Plan
    3. Ian and Barbara's exit
    2. Victoria's exit
    1. Jamie and Zoe's exit/2nd Doctor's regeneration (the last 5 minutes or so of The War Games)

I'm aware, but I'm still filling in gaps in my classic era viewing and until I'm mostly all caught up I'm not going to rank much classic stuff.

And it becomes so much worse en when you realise that it might be Amy and the Doctor who caused his suiside
The Doctor and Amy meant so much to him, and the he sees what he believed to be their deaths in the beginning of the Pandorica Opens, that it could have easily been what drove him over the edge

i would have put the doctors wife on here where at the end the tardis says "i just wanted to say" the doctor says "goodby" and the tardis say "no hello, i just wanted to say hello doctor"
and earlier in the show the tardis says "and you bring home strays" may be my favorite line in the new series

Sally from Rise Of The Cybermen, the universal shutdown of the emotional inhibitor (tbh anything to do with the cybermen), Solomon in Evolution of the daleks, the stewardess in Midnight, the dalek's existential crisis in Dalek, Ghosting in Silence In The Library, the doctor grieving over the master in Last Of The Timelords and others could have also been there, but overall a very good list. Agreed with every entry
