It's a very strange feeling to see them perform in such a small venue with some naive-ish look in their eyes and them being not aware of the fact that one day, they'd rule the metal scene and play to the thousands in the stadiums. Just wow.

Sometimes the smallest of venues offer up the best shows due to the intimacy of the audience. Just like when the Rolling Stones played the Double Door in Chicago. Wow! Whya show.
I wish I was a teen in the 80’s experiencing a Metallica show, this performance was killer!
I got to see them in Master Of Puppets tour Long Beach sports arena. They opened for Ozzy in the ultimate sin tour few months before Cliff died. I also got to see Megadeath at the Balboa theater a small venue in 86. lots of head banging and stage diving lots of fun!

He never even says the word "whom"...he said "for who?" Anyway... This is the Kill "Em All tour in 1983. Ride the lightning was not even released until 1984.

It’s amazing that they (Lars mostly I believe) had the foresight to document all of their shows at this level. Almost like he knew how big they would be someday 🤔
Lars was secretly a genius all along. and boy howdy did it pay off for them in the long run, exceptionally high quality documentation of performances, studio sessions, backstage stuff and VLOGs before they were popular.
I think this was Johnny Z’s idea. Raven was also filmed at this show.

Cliff Burton was so good it’s scary. He played the bass like a lead guitar. Very sorely missed. RIP Cliff Burton!
Hell yeah.....I was fortunate to see him at two shows on the Ride the Lightening Tour.
Cliff Burton was the only real musician of the bunch. At that time Metallica was about heart and powerful music. Now...... whatever.
I am blessed to of seen Cliff play with Metallica twice, headlining on the RTL tour when he blew my face off with his Anesthesia Bass Solo and supporting Ozzy on the MOP, both times I was able to get real close and in front of Cliff ( had GA and floor seats ) he was sort of like the Hendrix of metal bassists, he had sort of a hippie vibe but he was also a true headbanger both literally and figuratively, his head never stopped moving during a set! When that bass rig was fired up with his effects it was truly mind blowing, he was the spirit of Metallica!

@@jameshighsted9123 it was magical at the time but after his death it really hit me how special it really was! To use another Hendrix example, both Jimi and Cliff were only prominent in the music world as far as being heard and watched by the masses for only a few short years and only played on a few albums ( I am not counting all the Hendrix anthologies/collections ) yet left such an impact that has lasted decades after their deaths, you can include Randy Rhoads in that list, there are others but I am going to limit it to those three because their careers literally only lasted a few albums/years!

And he deliberately changed it when they released the Black Album in 1991. It's not even like he naturally evolved. It was a planned move. The wrong one too. Because after that record, Metallica went to dog shit. Jason quit, and they all went bat-shit! Fighting and disagreeing turned the band upside-down. They never were the same after that. Period. Your too young to understand I suppose? Because mostly younger fans say what you said. But i could be wrong. Maybe your in your 50,s like me? And for me; Metallica turned into everything they said they never would. That was a trait that appealed to a lot of fans back in the beggining. We got sold out. So you won't understand. You're gonna tell me that James isn't trying his hardest to actually use his vocal cords as a traditional singer would do? I can hear it a mile away. He sustains notes and tries to add vibrato. And worst of all, he tries to make his voice sound pretty. Thats how i hear it. But I dont hear that on any album prior to that. Not even on fade to black!
Don't get me wrong. I respect James 100%. I respect Metallica too. But I wouldn't pay to see them live these days. I saw them in their prime. It was GREAT! Then i saw them in 2010. What a disappointment. Never again for me. You could. That's cool. No problem dude. But I'm not. They will never top what I saw back in 1986 (when Cliff was still alive) and 1989. Never. Not even 1991-92. They still were relevant in those days. And sounded and played like it too.

Just watched for the second time and teared up during Pulling Teeth. Cliff was a genius and technically astounding. I get so used to seeing modern Metallica that I forget what a gift he was. This is why we need these videos. Incredible show.

I remember this from Cliff 'em All. I had that on VHS when it first came out. Cliff's solo still gives me chills. Such great memories from my youth.
God damn, this version of No Remorse is so legendary. I can’t even remember how many times I watched it on my old Cliff Em All VHS back in the day.
Definitely the standout song for sure, the tail of this version is an absolute beast
In my opinion no other bass player at that time was playing bass like Cliff Burton when he had joined Metallica in 1983. At the same time Cliff really loved playing music and his bass solos in Chicago was unheard of because many people never saw that before by a bass player who was talented and gifted like Cliff and his legacy of Metallica will always live on forever.
I was at the rock and roll hall of fame in Cleveland last year. They have Cliff’s bass from this show. Felt so surreal being next to it. 🤘

Ken Sturm If you knew anything about Metallica history, what makes each member tick and what made Cliff tick. You would understand that Cliff was the one experimenting and pushing the other ones the most when it came to new ideas, sounds and styles. Cliff would embrace and lead the era you call “sellout”. He would’ve taken Metallica way further out on that road and He would’ve been the one holding them there longer. Think more in the line of LuLu, concept albums and individual side projects. I remember all the clips from this show mixed into the Cliff Em All video -- young Metallica -- just kids still -- such energy, everyone there having a great time. It's a beautiful thing man.
It’s just insane to see them play in such a small venue. I saw them in ‘97 on the Load tour with the huge stage shaped like a guitar that took up the whole floor of the arena. That was only 14 years after this, which is nothing compared to how long ago this show was today.

yeah this the only proshot gig from the kill em all for one tour, sadly the first 17 minutes didnt get recorded, but luckily they just played this venue again after 38 years
It’s weird to think that at that point Metallica was at a level of success most bands only dream of today. It really puts into perspective how huge they got after the black album.
Its amazing to watch this with understanding that Lars played drums for just a 3 years... He always knew what he wanted to do. Cheers up for everyone who reading this :3

They've always had that incredible stage presence and sound. I love it when James says "this one is gonna kill all the fake people out there, all the posers. We fuckin' hate them". I roared with laughter. The nostalgia of that statement warmed my heart. Metallica was a huge part of my youth and I found a great outlet for my rage. Never too old to feel gleeful over memories of teasing posers and all the dorky hair bands like Poison and yuck, I can't even think about those pansy ass lady man lilyanthals. The first time I listened to Metallica was Master of Puppets around the time it was released. I was a freshman in HS, my friend borrowed the cassette tape in her brother's collection & we were blown away. The music scared the crap out of me but it opened the door for a lifetime of real music with natural born talent. I was a teen in the 80s, posers & pop artists unfortunately dominated the music charts. Thank God for Metallica!! I hope to see you guys in Buffalo again. You guys were, are, and always will be the kings of heavy metal. I don't know if you guys read the comment sections (probably not), but if you do, keep your head up, James. I knew just by watching your shows and noticing your demeanor last year that you were struggling. I am so glad that you made it back. I'm in recovery and will have 4 years clean in July. I went back to college & worked hard & earned another degree. I'm now an official therapist. Those demons just sneak up out of nowhere sometimes. You have a lot of love and support.

Last show I went to was at the Metro in late January. Was right up front, stage left. Crazy how much has changed in a few months.
3 years after this band released MOP, and then 5 years later they became the kings of metal, which sold more than 100 million copies for decades.
It has been around two decades since I was last at The Metro. Great venue.
Thank GOD someone was filming this. I'd buy that guy a beer. :)
