I got my grandfathers 40+ year old Model 190 about a half a year ago, brought it to the range and it jammed every other shot. Took the trigger assembly apart and came to find out that it was all caked in black gun grease and residue. Brought out the trustee Rem Oil and a stiff wired brush and completely cleaned the inside to shiny condition, ran patches with hoppes 9 through the barrel and now the gun shoots like its brand new. Haven't had a problem since in the 500+ rounds ran through it.
I just finished restoring one of these. My friend had one that was pretty beat up, rusty barrel and both sights were broke. Looked like it was not cleaned in 10 years. Refinished the barrel, polished bolt, and sanded and refinished the wood furniture. Only thing I have left is an option for sights. They use 3/8 dove tail same as a ruger 10/22 so I was going to try a set of fiber optic sights for a 10/22. Looks like a new rifle now cant wait to shoot it! Only thing I hate about it is the trigger.
@johnis4jesus Everyone is having a hard time putting the bolt spring back in, here is a simple trick, take the but stock off and it will go back in and be compressed straight when you gently put the butt stock back on.
Can you post a video on how to disassemble and reassemble the trigger assembly on the model 190? That would be a big help. I want to see it done before attempting it. Thanks.
The easiest way i found was to lay a q-tip along side to hold spring out a little. This just help line the spring up with the hole. Have the bolt already in the gun then work the spring on the spring guide toward the hole on the butt end. Hope this helps
well for cleaning you can use hoppes 9, a gun cleaning solvent available from walmart. for lube, remoil also from walmart. you can use other oils or cleaning solvents though. i use 3 in 1 oil a lot. just a few drops on the moving parts and for wiping down, put some oil on a rag and wipe it all over, leaving a very thin film.
it depends on what oils & solvents you're using. Hoppe #9 solvent, Remoil, 3in1 oil, CLP, eezox, wd40, should all be fine to breathe in limited quantities. When i lived at home i cleaned my guns in my bedroom and it was shut up and never experienced anything abnormal. Something like GunBlaster, which is basically brake cleaner, however i would definitely use outside. It will make you sick.
the use of firearms exposes you to lead. over time it can build up in your system and cause lead poisoning. i've never heard of a case of this happening, but the warning is common on gun cleaning supplies and ammo. so its recommended to wash your hands after cleaning or firing to remove any lead residue. 3 in1 oil for lube is good, it is almost odorless. its the same thing as sewing machine oil, which also works well. there is a brand of oil called nyoil that is odorless & tasteless too.
@johnis4jesus I hate taking this gun apart also- I found it easy to put in the bolt first- then feed the spring into the hole and then push the guide rod down agains the bolt and line it up when its held in- dont try pulling that damn bolt back without the trigger assembly- I was a dummy and made that mistake and launched the spting and rod out. Its fun gun- very under rated and under the radar- but its a very good competitor for the Marlin 60
i personally dont recommend using wd40. it is okay in a pinch but after its left for a while it dries into a hard film, which will gum up the works of a firearm. wd stands for water displacement. basically, if you drop your gun in water, spray it down with wd40, then wipe it dry and lube as normal. for basic gun cleaning and lube what i recommend is remoil, you can get it at walmart. it is almost odorless, less then wd40 even. its kinda thin, so for lube, 3 in 1 oil is good to try.
@johnis4jesus your right John i had to order a new metal guide for mine it flew across my shop after hitting me in the face they say drill a 1/16 hole for a papper clip to hold the spring i hope it works this time b/c it a fine rifle
I'm not sure, it just came with the kit but I had never thought about using wd40 before, I don't see why not. I'll use that next time, I feel more comfortable with that anyway. I appreciate it man.
Careful about WD 40 around firearms, it kills primers , don't know about 22LR rounds but keep away from primers. if in doubt load a few rounds with just primers spray and try it.
Hi john i got a cz 452 i got a still one Pease 22 rod but on the first pass i notice rifling marcks on the rod so i stoped ,im usung a thinner rod now but fo you think i damage the rifling
I dont know a lot about cleaning rifles, but what types of oils or lubricants can you use on a rilfe? Also, after you put the oil on should it be wiped dry or leave some oil on it?

Good Morning. I have a winchester model 77 .22 Rifle but she shoots and then locks the bullet, and the trigger does not fire. Can you tell me what's going on?
Not sure John is still on UA-cam he's not posted anything as far as I can tell for a couple years.. Too bad I like his low key down home country atyle.
Is anyone else having problems with the model 190 trigger pull? Mine has a 12 pound trigger pull. I put a new Simmons 22 magnum scope on it today and that sum bitch shot 1/2 inch groups at 50 yards.
If you watch the Swamp People shoot gators on the History Channel, I swear that's the 22 they're using!!! Mine is almost 40 years old, and will go to my Grandson when he's old enough. I've KILLED many an empty beer can at an arms throw!!

@johnis4jesus Thanks, I will give it a shot, is it difficult to remove the spring and the bolt as well? Did you have problems reassembling?
Take the stalk off and it's simple
Do you know any or could u post a video on how to disassemble it?

@johnis4jesus I removed the pin that locks the trigger housing in place, the housing would not budge. Is there a trick to it? Thanks.
is it okay to breath in the oil and lube vapors? I cleaned my rifle for the first time and felt like I breathed in too much of the vapors.
