    All these cars should have a “5 minutes to home” button where they just recharge their batteries. it’ hassle free and it would always allow you to leave home on a full charge.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 Рік тому +29

      Problem is that current PHEVs tend to do exactly the opposite: all my PHEVs, when driving with navigation on, use the hybrid system in a way that my battery is empty when I arrive at he destination. The idea is that they assume that anywhere you're going there's a charger (especially at home), and it's best to maximise your electricity use and minimise combustion engine use. That's why when I did a round trip somewhere I always had to program the navigation with the full round trip meaning I punch in both the destination and the trip back home. I had to learn how to program multi-leg journeys into the nav.

    • @pklimbic
      @pklimbic Рік тому +8

      @@pistonburner6448 exactly. That’s why we really need a button like that. You press it, it overrides everything, and you’re sure that when you arrive, the batteries will be full.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 Рік тому +3

      @@pklimbic Yup, or more (physical knob!) controls to tell the system what you want it to do! A knob each to adjust:
      -How much you want the hybrid system to give a boost during spirited driving.
      -A separate knob to select how much electric motor use you want the computer to work in when cruising normally (to adjust the rate at which the charge drops overall during a journey, instead of having to use the nav to let the car control it).
      -Rate of recuperation. This is so we can fill up the battery when we want, at the rate we need. It's so much less efficient to "emergency-fill" the battery very quickly using the engine and more efficient to slowly fill it up with recuperation alone, so it makes sense to be able to choose the rate according to your situation.
      -A separate engine preparation button to tell it to start up and begin heating up the engine.
      -A separate button to use the engine to heat up the car and battery (they really should be able to use the engine heat to keep the battery up to temp, not waste electricity for that), with minimal consumption. This is so that in cold weather you can avoid using up all of your battery to heat up the cabin with the very inefficient electric heater. Just maximise the whole warmup using the more efficient combustion heat.
      Actually I'd suggest a that if the button isn't clicked off the computer would keep using the engine heat optimally to keep the car heated up, starting it up periodically when necessary even when in electric mode. Electric heating just drains the battery.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 Рік тому +2

      @@pklimbic Actually come to think of it one of my previous PHEVs had a "hold charge" function which ensured that it kept the battery at its current level. I don't remember if it was the BMW or Mercedes. I'm pretty sure it was the Mercedes.

    Sounds like the car has a lot going for it. Especially that confidence and playfulness that one might not get from a 296. Even though it's more expensive than you expected it's a very attractive proposition at this price point. Can't wait for Porsche's take on a hybrid V6 sport/supercar!

    Sam - the one thing that's not discussed as often as it should is: how much of a loss it would be for the world of motoring were mclaren to go out of business.
    this is a small, independent manufacturer of carbon-tubbed, dihedral-doored, mid-engined supercars with hydraulic steering, that makes cars that can be purchased by anyone with the requisite cash - unlike the elitists at ferrari, who by the way use aluminum frames and electric steering.
    supporting mclaren is akin to being a fan of a smaller indie band and not, say, u2. both are sorely needed! excellent review.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 Рік тому

      No damage, the systems don't actually let the battery ever drain. When a hybrid slows down it's because the computer is doing it. There's always plenty of buffer.

    • @alunjones2550
      @alunjones2550 Рік тому

      @@pistonburner6448 I realise that but, constant amounts of excessive drain before the engine kicks in will degrade that batteries at a higher rate, and reduce their life, hence why I said "damage". I know that completely draining lithium batteries kills them and you always have a buffer. I still think they haven't properly resolved the link between battery and ICE.

    • @pistonburner6448
      @pistonburner6448 Рік тому

      @@alunjones2550 There is no more drain, no higher drain rate than in any other situation or on any other hybrid.
      Maybe it could warn inattentive drivers beforehand, but I don't see this configuration to be bad. It just gives the driver the options to do what he wants without the computer automatically intervening. People who know how the system works will know how to use it and not be surprised by that situation.

    Think it's the best looking McLaren they've done but it sounds naff. It's got the same problem at the MC20. Great looking but the noise of the engine doesn't inspire that spine tingle you should be getting from a super sports / super car. Too expensive too for what they are tbh. Ferrari have managed it with the 296, that sounds great for a V6. I know why we're missing the noise these days but damn, the days of the Alfa V6, the Maserati Gran Turismo, the earlier Ferrari V8's & V12's, Audi / Lambo V10's, Aston V8's & V12's... etc etc are all sorely missed in the new machinery. Also think the MC20 (& this too probably) is way too expensive but something about the way it looks would probably pip the decision against the Artura... I think... If I was in that financial position haha.

    looks great - no denying it..... but .... and with mclaren thers always a BUT......
    its a McLaren so we all know, there will always be issues. Always.
    These guys havnt been able to get their normal cars worked out.... no way they will have worked out how to incorporate the electric systems.
    its a shame, because they do look great !

    Welcome to inflation . This is exactly what England needs : an over engineered 2 seater for a quarter of a million bucks , that is exactly what the average jobless family father is dreaming of ❤️👀

    "Not as straightforward as the Ferrari", but then you didn't appear to have much, if any, understanding of how this system was meant to work to begin with!! Not a good place to make judgements from, or even comparisons!

    The McLaren interiors are always boring though. Look at the competitions interiors - Lambo, Ferrari, Pagani, Bentley, Aston Martin - all a lot more, eh, cool really.

    god only knows how Sam forgot to mention that the instrument cluster is mounted on the steering column so when you adjust your driving position you always have the complete view of it all the rest of the video is great as usual tho! I quite like this Artura, I've sat in it more than a year ago for the first time (a static expo one) and it felt good from the get-go.

    even all electric mode should pop into comfort when the battery runs out, thats a simple s/w thing they should have thought of.....like every one else has ! And, as with my hybrid merc, i would say you need min 20% to ensure any of the sport modes get battery assist, you'll use that up in no time flat out

    Friend of mine who is a McLaren owner was invited out to test drive these and I went with him. In my opinion this car is kind of a bust compared to the other models. No way to slice it the 6 cylinder is a downgrade from the V8 models. Plus some of the interior parts are questionable like the drive mode. Can`t believe someone would buy this over a V8 model.

    man you are overthinking it. you messed up and depleted the battery and i'm sorry to say so, but trying to charge your battery by doing hard accelerations is stupid as fuck and i dont think thats what they meat by overrun. just doesnt make any sense and it would only compromise your 0-62mph. so my guess is that overrun is just going fast and then regen braking after releasing throttle pedal so just some smooth driving no?

    Seven minutes in and all I have learnt is you are reviewing a car you know nothing about. All issues encountered with the battery are operator error. How can you give creditable reviews on something you know so little about? Sorry, nothing I have seen makes me want to give you 16 more minutes to finish the video if you are not prepared to invest 16 minutes to understanding how to use the vehicle.

    If I was cycling on those roads I would live in real fear of you coming up screaming behind me. You would be in serious grief if you came round one of those corners you were drifting sideways around and encountered a large animal or a group of cyclists.
