The engine they use is derived from a Nissan unit developed for racing - Nissan NEVER put cast rods in it though.

They still do regular cars, just mostly on the Extra Throttle House channel instead. Recently they've done the AWD Hybrid Corolla and the Prius Prime, both pretty "normal" cars
Nailed it. I own one and the gremlins are something you take hand in hand owning a McLaren. Turn it off and on again has been my approach. You put up with it because the driving experience is unmatched. McLaren also offered a 3 year fully covered service plan and 5 year warranty on the Artura to cover any reliability concerns. It was enough of a differentiator for me to trade in my McLaren GT. Funny enough I offered Karston through a common friend if you guys wanted to drive mine. Was super excited to see this review drop!

hand built british supercar wasnt a recipe for reliability in the first place now throw in twin turbo and extra battary and ev motor into the mix with a dash of tablet touch screen control sure does wonders for its reliability.
@@patthonsirilim5739None of what you said has nothing to do with it's poor reliability. Just a bunch of fairly racist remarks and ignorant nonsense. The car is not reliable because of the poor QA process that McLaren choose to implement. Nothing more nothing less. The company or their investors simply dont want to invest in QA for these cars and their buyers simply don't care about that. Pretty much the same with all high end cars (which is usually what the brits build). There's been plenty of reliable budget cars made in the UK.
An amazing introduction…gets better every time, and also, this is one of the most genuine reviews I’ve ever seen, showing not only the idyllic parts of the vehicle, but also showing all the faults, rattles, and pieces falling apart. @@jeromehaywood1 Hi. As someone that’s cheering for McLaren, it’s a problem that they really need to address. As an OEM they really need to make their cars more appealing to long term ownership. Bought my Artura in Feb in Toronto. It does have "quirks" but the driving experience is insane.....no matter what speed or road you are on. The car is brilliant! This car is all about how it makes you feel. If that is what you are looking for, then have a drive in it. There are times it has some issues (i.e. entertainment display does not come on) but there are workarounds (just do a hard reset by holding down the home button). But when you put it in track mode.....it's a perfect drivers car. The option of driving in electric downtown Toronto, not disturbing anyone, is fantastic. Well done TH for an honest review.
@@ThrottleHouse Elite Plateaux Grey. Would love to show it to you guys and give you my thoughts on the car and real world driving. Given we live in the same city.
I love eclectic driving in Toronto. The city is famous for it. Some corners are taken like a soccer mom and the next moment you're charging down the street like an F1 driver.
Quirks because it does not take away from the driving experience. The 4th 911 (992S) I had prior to Artura had a transmission issue in the first 2 months where a new one needed to be shipped from Germany to replace it. That is a serious issue vs a quirk requiring the screen to be rebooted. I love Porsche but a lot of the issues I had with the 911's were kept under wraps. @@kraenk12
I’m sticking with my 570 Spider. 4.5 years of ownership and no issues. My advice; buy the car into its 2nd year of manufacture so all the niggles have been ironed out. Same happened with 12C and the 720S…. Overall a stupendous drivers car and yes, the steering is sublime and I don’t need more than 570 horses to have fun at twice the legal U.K. speed limit. Deffo a keeper now I cancelled my Emira order….
Finally, McLaren is represented. I have a McLaren since 2021 and I haven’t had any issues at all. The car is solid. Anytime James and Thomas are in Carlsbad, if I’m around, they can test drive my 2020 McLaren 600LT Spider. While I appreciate the compliments in driving the Artura, I think they will have a new found appreciation for McLaren after testing the 600LT. McLaren offers different experiences depending on the car. I have only run into a handful of McLaren owners who felt like they bought a car with mechanical issues. Those were all very early MP4-12C models. I hope they choose to review more since I love their take on things. Including the silly messing about. Keep it up guys. Very entertaining.
You got a 600 unit limited production run specialty vehicle. The Artura is 'mass produced' (as much as a $250k supercar can be mass produced) with no production cap. I can't say that's really comparable to the Artura outside of price range. It's like comparing a $50,000 specially built quantum computer to a similarly priced Apple PC. It's just not the same.
I just love the throttle house guys style of reviewing cars. Canadian and Englishman, such good chemistry together, always entertaining, great opinions.
How well do the manufacturers take you taking the piss out of them all the time, lol? I do love the wit and detail of all your reviews, from a grocery getter to a supercar, thanks boys.
They just recommended it, and in addition to that conditioned McLaren's customers to give them a lot of leeway and not complain even if the cars are incredibly unreliable...any manufacturer would thank them for that!
Well, we know that BMW has bitched at them about how much they complain about their cars' aesthetic because they've outright mentioned it on the channel.
@@LanguagesWithAndrew Well, I think we all agree BMW deserved that. They spoke about how they would say it like it is on the Smoking Tire podcast. So respect.
There are certain markets which tax/limit cars according to specs. Hence the previous crop of sub 4 litre turbo supercars. Now sub 3 litre v6 models with hybrid assist. Or quotes of a number when clearly the power train produces much more. Not unlike the Japanese limit of 280ish hp 30 years ago. As long as the cars are good it doesn't really matter, unless you are GM selling a 6 litre n/a v8 worldwide.
Can UA-cam have a "love" option instead of just a like? Your videos are beyond amazing and I don't know about Thomas, but I literally had tears watching him talk about how good the driving experience was. Throttle House is the best!
Excellent, I watched this while driving in to work in my McLaren this morning! Okay fine I watched it on the side of the road while waiting for the tow truck.
McLaren Automative are broke. This maybe the model that finishes them off if it isn’t a success. Almost everyone loves how a McLaren drives but it would seem to date very few owners are prepared to stay with the brand after what is often awful ownership experience due to poor quality topped off by abysmal resale when they’ve finally had enough.
I had an Artura for review for about 8 days. It was absolutely amazing. But after I filmed my review, I got a few errors as well. The screen would btch and moan, but never shut off. Eventually the airbag light came on, I got a system comms fault, driver's side seat error, and something else. When it works, it is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. McLaren has recalled hundreds of cars below a certain VIN before customers can take delivery. They are scrapping them, salvaging non-electric components, and are sending customers/dealerships brand new cars with new VINs, new software, updated hardware, and new electrical hardware.
So many reviews of British made cars start with a pisstake of their reliability. A8 did a great Range Rover Sport review that started with it arriving on a tow truck 😂

671 hp = 500 kW (rounded to the nearest whole number) No idea *why* that's being used as a figure though. Might mean something to the regulations of some market it gets exported to, carried into other markets the same way as with Japanese automakers agreeing to limit cars to 276 hp / 206kW. Something that still occurs even on non-Japanese automakers, long after the "agreement" has ended. Or, might just be a nice round number close _enough_ to the average output of the engines that it's just what they went with.
maybe to offset the "quirks" aka issues in the quality. ironically 671 is more precise than 500... 500 is what you say when you dont know what it makes but you have an idea based on the parts... so 500. other than 671 because thats what the dyno said or you actually know EXACTLY the PRECISE figures.
I guess engineers use kW because it's easier to do maths for acceleration, etc., and the early planning stages of what a car will be and where it will sit in the market are based around things like number of seats, number of doors... and where the power should be. The engine could do more but it sacrifices other factors, so the rough number becomes the exact number.
I think Thomas was on the verge of tears when he talks about the steering feedback of the Artura, but given it's hydraulic I'd say it's almost an unfair advantage in a world where everyone else uses electric steering racks. I imagine every modern car he reviews after this (and the Emira) is going to disappoint him.
You’re right, it’s *almost* unfair. Thing is, there’s nothing stopping other manufacturers from using hydraulic racks (except their apparent disregard for driver experience)

I understand we're both of you are saying truly I do. But McLaren seems to be especially bad when it comes to reliability and problems. And dealing with those problems. Jay Emm on cars made several videos about several poor experiences dealing with McLaren. As consumers who are spending such a large amount of money on cars, people should demand better. A car that costs 1/15 as much should not be better put together, and I'm not sure why people make excuses for them.
the reason people say the Artura doesn't compete with the 296 is because the 296 is way more expensive, and it's faster than the 765LT in the 1/4 mile or a rolling race. if the 296GTB is faster than the 765LT it means the performance difference between the 296 and the Artura is huge, so they aren't even in the same category
I don't know, you could say it's a budget 296. Speed isn't everything and both of them are next generation hybrid supercars. I think this could give the 296 a run for it's money but not with these kinds of reliability issues. Anyways I prefer the 296 it looks much more special than this generic McLaren look

The NSX weighed 600 lbs more than this car and had 3 motors to the Artura's one. McLaren (and Ferrari) recognized that extra motors and electric thrust aren't worth the weight penalty, they definitely did not follow Honda's lead. They already understood before the NSX even got launched.
A beautiful car, but the argument “But it’s got great dynamics” just doesn’t cut it. After all, that’s the fundamental premise of the car. Why should anyone accept faults from a $200,000 car that they’d be enraged over in a $30,000 daily driver? Worse, McLaren knows their cars are poorly built and seem to remain arrogantly unconcerned. The web is full of examples of horror stories regarding McLaren’s shoddy service and poor treatment of their customers. If I ever reach an understanding with the lottery commission, McLaren will not be on my shopping list…😎
Thanks for yet another epic review. 🙏 Just watched the launch event for the new Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. What a beautiful vehicle. They talked a lot about the importance of dreaming at the event and the dream that instantly popped up in my head was not to drive it myself, but for you guys, the Throttle House team, to come here to Europe and review that amazing piece of machinery on some twisty Italian roads. That is how close to the heart your reviews have become. ❤
LOL!! The intro.... Kinda stinks that the new car is having issues. Back to square one I guess with McLaren. I thought they had resolved there issues (why I edited this comment) didn't see the parts of you showing all the broken stuff 🤣🤣
I wonder if that 671 hp figure is like a "gentlemen's agreement" type deal of some sort. Or maybe it's high enough a number for the lower model cars to sound wildly impressive but low enough that 700+ sounds absolutely unbelievable. Idk but that's odd.
671 bhp is just an odd number in the imperial system. 671 bhp is about 680 metric horsepower (yes, there is a tiny difference) and about 500 kW, which is the unit most likely to be used by the engineers. So they went for a nice round number in 500 kW and then the marketing department has to convert it to the odd 671 bhp.
@@baoquoc3710 yea that's kinda what I'm saying like I'm understanding the 500 kw conversion now that it was explained but why are most cars making 500 kw?! Thank you guys!! Well articulated. I had a 600LT Spider and I would have described it exactly as you did the Artura. Put a smile on my face every time. Was amazing in the mountains. A friend once said it was like cheating it was so good. Yes, there are “quirks”, but as most McLaren owners will say, you live with those because the driving experience is stellar.
Sold my 600LT for a new 992 Porsche GT3 and it's so much better than any McLaren it's crazy. Better build quality, reliability, and fun. Just say no to British cars
What a terrible car, it's not even funny. The quality control is atrocious which is unacceptable at this price point, the design is generic and the powertrain isn't exciting. Just for comparison, the 296 is a Ferrari, it's prettier and comparatively better made. The Porsche 992 Turbo S is infinitely more well made, prettier, timeless, will hold it's value, is more usable and won't bankrupt you with maintenance bills. McLaren will follow Jaguar, MG and Lotus into obscurity, no doubt.
A) You didn't watch the last 98% of the video did you? B) Jaguar just announced significant profits, MG are breaking their sales records on a consistent basis and Lotus have sold 4x the number of Emiras in half of 2023 that they did in all of 2022, plus have 30x that number of preorders for the Eletre. C) Or, if we're talking publicity, Jag never lacked it, MG have just launched their performance crossover thing, which is all over UA-cam (e.g. Carwow drag races) and nobody has shut up about Lotus since the Emira was announced. Whatever anyone thinks of the cars, there's nothing obscure going on except your view of the world...
Wonderful review as always. Stupid tech for tech/cheapness sake. I hate it so much. I didn't even think about the fact that the displays could potentially overheat and shutoff. HVAC controls absolutely should be a physical control. Even the interface, why swipe up? Why can't you just touch it? Completely diverts the driver's attention from driving. And yes, those thick bezels look terrible.
I took delivery of my Artura in May (my 6th McLaren) and I'm already selling it. Everything was working well but it was too slow on the track, as I primarily track my McLarens. The only problem I have with the Artura is that McLaren should not have categorized it under "Super Series!" The battery is good early on to eliminate turbo lag but at mid to max speeds it's only as powerful as it's V6 and no more! My top speed at my local track was ~125 mph, compared to my 720s doing 148mph. It's a fantastic all around canyon and twisties car if you never take it to track and expect high track performance!
Beautiful car. No way I'd take this over a Turbo S. Reliability is just not there in this vehicle. I would take the Lotus over this as well just for the manual engagement. Still a very nice car.
After having just paid 10k to a McLaren dealership (where I saved 12k by doing a lot of the work myself first, but some things just aren't doable in your garage), the opening bit hits me right in the nuts! Also, I am moving from the 650s Spider to a 720s Spider. The dealer desperately tried to sell me on the Artura instead. I drove one of my friends' Artura before the dealer's, and my mind hasn't been changed. There is no general argument for the Artura over a 720s, and IMO, there isn't an argument for an Artura over the 650s. It sounds like shit compared to the 650/720. Then you add that there isn't (yet) a Spider, which is the number one reason I bought McLaren over the competitors; the McLaren carbon monocoque allows for the convertible to not compromise structural rigidity when cornering, which if you've never experienced chassis twist on a convertible supercar (like a Huracan/488), it's gut wrenching. All that being said, I would take the Artura over 99.9% of cars, just not over almost any other supercar.

Welk much like video game reviews...they can be bought that's why big company reviews shouldn't be trusted at all
Man, throttle house has come so far in such a relatively short period of time. It doesn’t seem that long ago that we’re discussing “regular traffic” cars. Now nearly every single video contain some of the most exciting cars currently made. Hats off to you guys
I don't find it one-sidedly positive that they're reviewing fewer relevant cars.
If anyone is watching TH on their phone...you're missing out on the quality of delivered entertainment.

The warranty term is BS because there is a high chance mclaren will go out of business in a few years 😂

It's shocking that the Artura isn't sorted by now. I saw a pre-production Artura at a show more than 2 years ago.

yup... just like the Emira...

I also love how this review is about how it is to drive the car, rather than just how the infotainment system works, or how it looks pulling up to a bougie hotel or restaurant.

Its a real shame McLaren has many quality issues. I always root for them seeing as how small they are compared to equivalent supercar makers. They need to focus on quality control fast or they're going to face the same faith as jaguar is right now.
That's never going to happen. McLaren has one of the best supercars on the market. The performance alone is makes them a timeless brand.

That’s epic man hope you continue to enjoy it! What colour did you pick?

@@dns9155 yeah, software updates, battery not recharging, engine going into limp mode. It is fun when it works, but sucks when issues happen.

671 hp = 500 kW (rounded to the nearest whole number)
No idea *why* that's being used as a figure though.
@@Ovenman940 680 metric hp is just equal to 671 imperial hp. That's it.

I think Thomas was on the verge of tears when he talks about the steering feedback of the Artura, but given it's hydraulic I'd say it's almost an unfair advantage in a world where everyone else uses electric steering racks. I imagine every modern car he reviews after this (and the Emira) is going to disappoint him.

the reason people say the Artura doesn't compete with the 296 is because the 296 is way more expensive, and it's faster than the 765LT in the 1/4 mile or a rolling race. if the 296GTB is faster than the 765LT it means the performance difference between the 296 and the Artura is huge, so they aren't even in the same category
I don't know, you could say it's a budget 296. Speed isn't everything and both of them are next generation hybrid supercars. I think this could give the 296 a run for it's money but not with these kinds of reliability issues. Anyways I prefer the 296 it looks much more special than this generic McLaren look

Funny how much hate the new NSX got and now everyone is copying their homework
Like how the NSX was copying the p1’s homework?
No-one is copying NSX, and the NSX was criticised for very good reason.
The NSX weighed 600 lbs more than this car and had 3 motors to the Artura's one. McLaren (and Ferrari) recognized that extra motors and electric thrust aren't worth the weight penalty, they definitely did not follow Honda's lead. They already understood before the NSX even got launched.
The NSX was criticised for being no NSX.
Fair but also in a completely different class of car.

It's just the converted number from 500kW. Nothing special about honestly.

The only problem I have with the Artura is that McLaren should not have categorized it under "Super Series!"
The battery is good early on to eliminate turbo lag but at mid to max speeds it's only as powerful as it's V6 and no more!

I mean the turbo S isn’t the most reliable car in the world either but it’s better than this lol
This review makes me even more excited to see your purchase and review of your Lotus Emira!
