i used to go out into nature and sketch everyday. but academia has never really worked for me so when i was graded on my sketchbook and told that some sketches were just plain 'bad', i dropped out and stopped sketching alltogether. but after discovering your channel i picked up my materials for the first time in three years and rediscovered how much i love playing in my sketchbook and going out into scotlands nature! i really missed this process, so thank you for helping me heal what i thought id lost. now i no longer feel shame about my work, just exitement in picking up a brush. ❤
I am so sorry that you had that experience, it breaks my heart to think about how many people miss out on exploring their passions because of experiences like this. I am BEYOND delighted that you have picked the brushes back up though, your comment has made my day 💙 as Karen said below, it's all about the joy of the process!
Such beautiful scenery! Thank you for this inspiration, Orla. My tip…more clothing than you think you need and less supplies than you think you’ll need. 😊
This is the only outdoor sketching I want to watch in the future. You have inspired me. You make it feel such an explosion of freedom. Thanks Chrissie x
Love the way you simplify the shapes in the landscape and bring in enhanced colours. I'm in UK taking care of my Mum for an extended period. Normally, I live on the West Coast of Canada and often see landscapes similar to those you visit. I look forward to the time when I can use your processes to explore landscapes. Now it's Autumn, I would love to visit one of the more rugged coastlines of the British Isles...not sure if that will be possible. I love your calm, peaceful videos, the way you create without being fussy. Thank you Orla for braving the exhilarating cold and wind. Jan
Perfect timing! I’m going camping in 2 weeks and thought about sketching. These are great tips I’ll be trying! Thanks for the tips, inspiration, and lovely scenery!
I’m soooooo glad à came across your videos. You’re really inspiring and I will go on my first plein air painting by the sea this weekend. You also count me as one of your Patreon. You’re opening new horizons for me. Thank you very much.
What an inspiring glimpse of your process , Orla. The vivid colors & textures of that wild coastline will come back fresh to mind every time you look at your sketches! Thank you for sharing it with us. When I work outside, I take a couple of binder clips to hold my pages in place. Large rubber bands can also help hold pages from blowing about.
Thank you Hannah. That is a great tip! Somehow, I ALWAYS forget the clips haha. I need to put them somewhere obvious to remember to take them next time 😄
every shot of nature and the landscape you captured here is beyond stunning! Reminds us to be grateful for the natural world-it is truly a soulful experience to take it all in.
Although I mainly do watercolours I’ve found soft pastels to be the best thing for me for plein air sketching. They are so quick! It’s so intriguing to try matching the colours I see with the pastels andctge blends I can make with them. I feel released from the fussy perfectionism I experience with my watercolours. Pastels definitely work well in the CDN wilds! 🇨🇦 Thanks for this inspiring video!
Thanks for the inspiration. I’m very connected with the coast too and I’m learning a lot with you. The process of starting with words is genius. I live close to the beach (California ) and I’m looking forward to do some sketching ❤
I so want to visit that part of the world! Sooooo beautiful! Our coast is similar in the winter months which is why I love it, but something about where you are just calls to me. On a side note, aren’t ski pants the most comfortable things! I don’t ski, but my boyfriend gave me a pair of his ski pants last time we went to the snow and my goodness, so cozy. What a great idea to wear them sketching in the elements.
It's a very special part of the world for sure! Amazing archeology there too ☀️ hehe yesss!!! they are the best, I think I might stick to using them outside this winter ❄️
hello i am in the Nehterlands, so totally diff landscape but your tips are very helpful, i always bring clips, for windy pages, my best tip for other ppl wanting to try outdoor sketching is, if you think your sketches are not worth being in a expensive sketchbook try the back of packaging, paper bags, boxes of food, i always put a few in my backpack and scribble and then when i come home i work with what i got! thank you for your wee movies, love J
@@OrlaStevens what i find difficult is that i think what i make is not good enough, i dont know if you or anybody recognize this, sorry for spelling mistakes english is not my first language, i get really uncomfortable if other people are trying to watch what i draw, specially if they then try to say something, terribly akward for me!! thank you for messaging me back, that is very friendly of you! And yes the back of packaging is lovely to draw on, even paint holds good on that, watercolor and acrylic, tombow as well, thanks J
When I paint outside I'm always too caught up in the details. I really want to try and loosen up and paint the feel and mood of the place. I'm hopeful that next time I go out I can use some of your tips to help make this happen. The other thing I struggle with is choosing what materials to take, without packing the kitchen sink! So any advice with that would be gratefully received. I only recently found your channel but its quickly becoming one of my favourites. Thanks for sharing! 😊
it can be so easy to get overwhelmed by everything, I totally get it :) I've got a separate video called 'start sketching outside | 5 tips' that shares my approach to packing light (I am a fellow kitchen-sink packer at heart 😄)
I always want to work outdoors, but have trouble with my eyes. They water in the cold and wind and bright light. This has been since very young. But, I've booked on a course in Glencoe next mth. First day out doors second day studio. I will be right out of my comfort zone. You're an inspiration Orla for working plein air. Thank you for all your positive thoughts and words......Alioban ❤
You’re so wise Orla ❤ Thank you again for your inspiration and incredible landscapes and perceptions. I am ungratefully bored with my coastline and its winds, but seeing you makes me want to search for other places. I’m doing it, getting in the car and finding somewhere I haven’t looked at this way before. I am signed up, but am heading overseas on 25th October for a month’s big birthday holiday, unsure how much sketching time ? Will I still be able to access your offer in the future? 😊 Also, what type of pastel was that, that you dipped into the water! 🙏 please 💙 loved its effect from wetting. Gratefully Px
Hey Perla! thanks so much - and that sounds exciting, I love getting a change of scene too :) Ohhhh hope you have a great holiday! The meet-up will be recorded so you can watch back any time if you can't make the live call. It's a windsor & newton soft pastel, they're simply called 'artists pastels' on the side. ☀️
I want to go out and sketch, I’ve only tried a few times and found I end up trying to draw too much detail…. i want to keep it simple so will give it another try after watching this… I live five mins from the beach so plenty of inspiration

That’s awful that someone would try to discourage you like that. Just do it,because you love it 💜💙💚

That’s awesome!❤
2:24 the sky and water is BREATHTAKING. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL PLACE❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you - it really is magical there!
Such beautiful scenery! Thank you for this inspiration, Orla. My tip…more clothing than you think you need and less supplies than you think you’ll need. 😊
thank you - and yes, double yes to these tips! I always end up using half of whatever I bring 😄
The colours of the seaweed against those rocks made me catch my breath! So very beautiful, thank you darling girl 💕
oh me too, I'm obsessed by those colours! nature is the best artist
This is the only outdoor sketching I want to watch in the future. You have inspired me. You make it feel such an explosion of freedom. Thanks Chrissie x
thanks so much! it gives me so much energy to do 💙
I am going for a morning walk along the coast tomorrow. I’ve never sketched outdoors. Maybe I should try something new. Thanks Orla ❤
woohooo! oh I hope you had a good time :)

I admire your endurance 😊
Love the way you make it ”everybody can” simplicity. We got our first snowflakes in Sweden today, so no outdoor sketching today…🥶🎨😄
Beautiful, and so inspiring! I don't usually do outdoor sketching but now I feel like giving it a go 😊
Thanks Marta! Ohh I hope you enjoy if you give it a go 😊
I love plein air painting, thank you for sharing your experience with us ☺☺
Thank you Chantelle! ☀️
