I love your advice to not capture everything at once. When I try to sketch from life I get overwhelmed, which is exactly what’s holding me back and why I tend to stick to abstracts. Only capturing one aspect at a time makes it so much more accessible. Thank you!
hey jeannine! oh I hope it helps, it also kinda abstracts the process too, so you still get that ambiguity :) I was so intrigued to learn about your abstract process too - I don't think I've ever tried fully painting abstracts guided directly by materials, I think I'll give it a go this soon and see what happens! ☀️
@@OrlaStevens painting guided by materials is super fun! At least for me 😉 Give it a try!
I really admire your work ethic, your loose painting style, and how you continually experiment and grow. I also really love how you sit on th floor when you create your works. It reminds me of a child laying on the floor to color and draw. You're really cherishing your child-like spirit and it's really beautiful. Youre a huge inspiration in my artistic journey
thanks for your lovely comment - haha aw, it feels good to combat sitting at a desk the rest of the time! here's to channeling more child like play ☀️
I just know I'll be coming back to this video again and again to refresh my brain on all of these techniques and gorgeous colours. I love seeing you in process. Hugely inspired. Thank you, Orla.
Your cat wanted to paint too! So cute pawing that brush 😊
haha she absolutely loves to get involved!
@@OrlaStevens My dog would chew the brush!
I adore your processes Orla! So happy to get more of them on Patreon!
thanks a million Christina! 💙
Your videos are so soothing to watch and your work is so beautiful and captivating!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it ☀️
Loving the loose way you handle materials. Exciting and inspiring, would look amazing applied to large surface.
thank you - working my way up to larger pieces, can't wait to up the scale! :)
Your videos are a goldmine of inspiration! Thanks so much!
Thank you! ☺️ really glad they're resonating with ya!
This is freedom. Reminds me on how i used to express my energy towards mixed medium. An absolute freedom. Thankful for your art 😍
freedom, it's the best feeling in art! 🎨
Yummy “eye candy”. You make me want to run and pick up my paint brush!! Thank you!
Gorgeous! I love hearing about your process. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, feelings, and art with us!

Thank you Orla for sharing more ideas and illustrating them as well. Negative spaces, l had the same thought yesterday they are very interesting 😊 l think making notes of ideas and projects that go around my head would be a great way to declutter my mind. Tnen they are tnere for reference if l need them. Thanks again.....Alioban ❤
it was such a game changer for me when I started writing things out! I got the tip from Struthless on youtube, if you're ever looking for creative mindset / mind decluttering, he's a wealth of knowledge 💙
@@OrlaStevens Thank you, will check it out 😊
This gave me the urge to go buy myself a new sketchbook and get back to markmaking fun...😃
yayyyyy!!
Loving these inspirational, cosy videos! So creative :) also, i love your jumper that you are wearing near the end of the video! where is it from? xx
Thank you! 🩵 oh it’s so warm, it’s one I picked up from vinted by a brand called heritage, it’s a donegal knit made in Ireland ☀️
Hi Orla,
I really Love your work ❤️ Your abstract landscapes are sublime, the colour, the shapes and mark making, love them! I really Loved the two blue paintings…did you say….they are from photos of Greenland? Really loved the dark blue marks with the lighter blues on those works ….fantastic! They just give off a certain vibe, evocative of those cold places. 🙏🤩 ❤️
Hello 👋 Thank you! :) Yes, they were inspired by my friend's photos & music she'd made from her sabbatical in Greenland. So keen to visit that captivating landscape sometime! There's something very special about simple ink paintings, will need to give some more a go 💫
Hello, Orla~ Serendipity brought you to me today and I have been bingewatching your videos, utterly captivated! You are such a natural born teacher, able to articulate your experience beautifully and also educating by wonderful example. You've brought so much joy and inspiration to me today! (Okay, yes--massive artist crush happening here! ;-) ) Question: when you work in sketchbooks with oil pastels/chalks/charcoal, do you apply a fixative to finished pages or are you okay with any color transfer that may occur on opposite pages? See you outdoors! ~Susi (Woodstock, Vermont, USA) P. S. One more quick question: at the start of this video you mention a podcast episode titled "You Can't Do It All." May I ask what the podcast is, please?
Hey! 👋 oh thank you so much, that’s so great to hear - thank you for being here and watching my videos! ☀️ in my sketchbooks I don’t worry about transfers, I’m not very precious about them. Sometimes I’ll use hairspray to fix things in them, but I don’t worry too much about it. Ooo yeah of course; it was a quote from the podcast episode, and the podcast is called Friends with Benedict’s - it’s a lot of nonsense and fun conversations between two filmmakers on UA-cam 🍃
💖
Wow!!! This looks great in your sketchbook, what for one is this? Elsy LOVE
Thank you! 💙 the sketchbooks are from Jacksons art (online) - look for the 160gsm and up paper weights, they're great!
@@OrlaStevens thanks darling
What type of sketchbook are you using? The large square one.....also, enjoyed learning about your process as you start a new project! Thanks
Do you prep the pages of your sketchbook first? They really accept a lot of layers!
Hi!
Also how to you seal the oil pastels on your pages?
Hey! I'm gonna do a video to run over the books & materials soon, but in the mean time, the rectangle one is from Jacksons art, 160gsm watercolour paper, and the square is from Boesner - also 160gsm. Think getting the thicker paper weight is the trick! ☀️
only by adding the base layer colour of acrylic, but that's more for the texture & colour than to make the paper more substantial :)
for my sketchbooks I just use hairspray - these pastels feel much more 'dry' - they're not that rich creamy type of pastel like sennelier for example, so don't smudge as easy.
Lovely video, love your work. I really like the size of your sketchbooks. What Brand and sizes are they?
thank you! they're 160gsm watercolour sketchbooks from jacksons art online, & boesner in germany x
Just found your you tube and I’m loving binging all your videos! What sketchbook are you using as it’s taking all the mediums really well. Do you seal the pages at all? I wondered if the pastels smudge
Aw thanks so much! It’s a great one; I share details on what I use in the second half of this video; ua-cam.com/video/HQCIRMqr-kY/v-deo.htmlsi=6MFRvIuxRNQgpHV3
For my sketchbooks I use hairspray to seal, but I’m not precious about them ☺️
I am really enjoying your work and style. Cab I ask what sketchbooks you are using? Xx
thank you! of course - it's a 160gsm watercolour sketchbook from Jacksons art x
thank you for sharing, may I know which sketchbook are you using? the big square one
thank you! Of course, it's a hardback 21 x 21cm from Boesner, 210gsm paper. I've got a video on the range of sketchbooks I typically use (this one included) here: ua-cam.com/video/HQCIRMqr-kY/v-deo.htmlsi=oI8bkhuXUm5uuzzq
Hai una bella sensibilità...😊
Thank you - I appreciate it! 🌊 😊
Hi Orla, just watched this video and you mention the patreon meet up tomorrow if watching in real time and so presume that is Saturday 27 Jan? Not sure. Anyway I am a member of your Patreon and haven’t received any notification or zoom invite. I have also looked in Patreon and last item is suggesting dates and times. How do I receive notifications of these please. Many thanks. Sam
Hi there! I’ve sent you a message on Patreon 💙
What brand sketchbook are ur using, would like to purchase this one!
Hey! It’s a great one from Boesner in Germany, but Jackson’s art stock them too I believe. I’ve got a whole video and blog post with links about my sketchbooks ☀️
Hi! What sketchbooks are these? They lay flat, papier seems thin but can handle all the medium, they look like a great buy!
Hey! They're 160 gsm watercolour sketchbooks from Jacksons art - I'll do a wee video on my materials run down soon :) x
@@OrlaStevens Thank you!
I like your videos. I appreciate that your dialog is thought out. You don't hem and haw and fill the video with uninformative chatter.
thank you for the feedback, I appreciate it! 😊
I also create Artist lifestyle Vlogs about my art and life as a full time artist (Irene Torok Art) working in my unique style of creating landscapes. Hope you’ll check it out. 😊
