    So now that you saw that the first infected were from the flour and crop mill in Jakarta. You can connect the dots from the last episode that the grandma got infected from the biscuits, and Sarah never ate the cookies, Joel never ate the biscuits and forgot the cake. And tommy never got those pancakes. But that’s how it was spread. Through the flour and wheat.

      It makes sense from a "general sci-fi story" perspective, but realistically, how would the fungus survive the baking process?! We're talking 300+ degrees.

    • @aPhatPhoenix
      @aPhatPhoenix Рік тому +17

      @@thinkingoutloud3757 couldn’t answer you that. But if you think about it, if you left chicken out all day, and it goes bad/grows mold and you cook it and eat it you’ll still get sick. Also back in the Middle Ages, the illness St. Anthony’s fire was caused by rye in bread infected with fungus. And again in 1928 in Manchester 200 people reported sick from Rye Bread. And an entire French town in 1951 was poisoned by a local baker.

      @endubless Рік тому +2

      I heard these rumours but is actually confirmed? Because during the car scene in the 1st ep they mention the old lady going to the hospital in the city and that’s probably how she got it and the neighbours baking with flour that just so happens to come from Jakarta seems unlikely.

    • @aPhatPhoenix
      @aPhatPhoenix Рік тому +4

      @@endubless I can’t say it was confirmed or not, I just made these inferences on what we have seen so far. The first reports of it were In Jakarta at one of the biggest flour mills in the world, as we heard on the radio and also at the beginning of this last episode. But if the fungus was spreading in the mills there, one could assume that it was also spreading in mills across the world because that’s what the fungus was using. They might not have all came from Jakarta mill because that just shows where the fungus was spreading at first.

      I actually disagree, I played the games and obviously this isn’t part of that at all. I believe Tess was being partially controlled and the fungi was trying to connect her to the hive, so her brain was telling her to connect but she had just enough heart to get the lighter lit. Backstory of Tess from the podcast that never got shown due to budget/time constrains. It's not even in the game either:
    Apparently she had a family before the outbreak, a husband and kids. They all got infected and she had to kill them all but she couldn't kill her son, instead locking him in the basement and she could hear him clawing against the door trying to get it open.
    Apparently they wanted the opening to be of that door being clawed at and show her family later on.

    Just a heads up: Zombies in this world aren't dead like in traditional zombie lore. The fungus takes control of a LIVING host and controls their brains seeking to spread. It actually happens in nature with many insects. So, once someone is dead, they're dead and the fungus can no longer use their body. This is why the clickers bled out in the later scene. It's also why the guy who was mauled didn't come to life. It's a much more realistic version of a zombie apocalypse with living organisms instead of dead ones.

  • @Someone-ws4ll

    First time I see you react and I'm really impressed by your understanding of the series. If for a fan the episode is fantastic, I find that there are many little detail which remains a little too complicated for certain people who discover the universe. So here is some answer yours questions, hope it helps you ! (Big love and sorry for my english)
    The mushroom that come out of the clickers head actually acts as a kind of armor protecting the host so good guess. The more time passes, the more the infected are covered with it and at the beginning of the episode Joël speaks of infected that survives over 20 Year. That's why they infected at the beginning of the episode are not so much covered by the fungus. There is still fresh ! Another good guess for Hugo is clickers use of echolocation, in the game they use it but I don't know if the show is going to recognize it.
    All the other infected showed on the screen are not clickers, and the one seen at the very end is not one. So he sees Tess clearly. In the last scene of Tess, the infected slowly approaches her because the cordyceps communicates between hosts, they are connected. Besides, it's not the lighter that doesn't work but Tess who fights against the parasite's hold. Beautiful last scene full of meaning.

    I really like how the infected are portrayed. They’re not necessarily hungry, ravaging zombies.. I mean they are but it really does feel like the fungus just wants to spread. Look at how calm that last zombie was, Tess wasn’t running away so there was no need for it to do anything dramatic, It just slowly went up to her like: “Excuse me, if you’re not gonna resist then I’m just gonna- y’know, spread some of my fungi to you. Don’t worry that’s all I wanna do.”

    You 3 are easily my favorite reactors to this series. Hopefully Elise will endure the series even though she doesn’t watch these kinds of things. She brings a lot to the conversations between the 3 of you and has a chill voice good for the commentary.
    Idk if it was mentioned but the devs have said that the host is completely aware of what’s going on for up to a month after becoming a runner, after that their consciousness deteriorates. In the games you can actually hear some runners crying as if it’s the person still alive within but unable to control themselves. The clickers we saw are an advanced stage of the infection. By that point they’ve completely lost consciousness and that human element. They’ve become completely blind due to the fungus taking over their heads but evolved a heightened sense of hearing and they use their clicking noises as a form of echolocation. So it’s not just a noise they make to creep us out, it serves a purpose. Hopefully this explanation doesn’t spoil anything, just some informative insight on what we’ve seen so far from the infected.
    I’d like to add one last note, don’t be too afraid of the comments. There will always be haters no matter how big your channel grows, just be yourselves. I thought that your reaction was just the right amount of commentary personally. Flow with the good and the bad and take constructive criticism where you can. You’ve gained a new sub ❤

    Great video! You all have such great chemistry, and I wouldn't worry so much about getting caught in discussions or tangents especially after the episode, like the bit about the Contagion movie. It helps give insight into your thoughts and understanding of the show, which is why we're here. I think the issues some people had was the excessive talking or tangents during the episode caused you to miss key details, which was frustrating. You have some good ideas to mitigate that with writing notes and pausing if you want to get an idea out immediately (though I don't think you actually did that this episode), just try not to overcompensate and shut down any extended discussion or tangent because it could lead to something interesting and entertaining. Anyways, thanks for the video, you've got a sub from me!

  • @CReaper210
    @CReaper210 Рік тому +2

    I know it's probably been mentioned at least once and it doesn't seem like a big deal, but there's a good reason to see the infected as 'infected' and not zombies. It's the fungus keeping the human alive. The host being alive is necessary for the fungus to continue to survive within its host. And the fungus also does not give its host more vitality in the traditional sense. So as an example, like in the scene where they're walking in the hotel, they know they're relatively safe because infected can still drown, the human will die and the fungus can no longer use the body anymore.
    The longer the fungus has to entrench itself into its host, the more it can use it for long term purposes. In the same way that when you let vegetation go for too long without cutting it out/down, over time it gets harder to remove because it's growing thicker, harder, longer, twisting around its surrounding material, etc. The creatures in the museum were infected for longer and so were more resilient. I don't really know how long that takes though.

  • @kkjhn41
    @kkjhn41 Рік тому +7

    Tess didn't tell Joel she had been bitten because she knew he would have quit then and there in the museum, probably shot Ellie like he wanted to and gone home to the QZ. She wanted to make sure they at least got to the meet with the Fireflies. The truck at the meeting place as well as the gas, guns and grenades were what the Fireflies were going to use to take Ellie to the west coast lab. Notice that there wasn't a second vehicle or supplies that they promised to Tess and Joel as payment for delivering Ellie. It looks like that after delivering Ellie the Fireflies planned to kill Joel and Tess to keep the secret of Ellie and what the Fireflies were doing and not risk Tess and Joel returning to the QZ and selling that information. After all as Tess said they weren't good people and were only concerned with what's in it for them and Joel especially is not interested in helping the Fireflies and their goals.
    The infected that attacked the Capitol building were runners, not Clickers. Runners are early stage infected, the ones that for the most part only live a few months. They can see and ran past Tess because she was infected not because they were blind and didn't hear her. Clickers are infected who survived the early stage and have begun to have their flesh be replaced by fungus. Even they aren't the ones Joel talked about that survived 20 years, we haven't met them yet.
    Tess didn't resist the "kiss" because she had already begun being taken over by the fungus. Notice how her attempts to light the lighter slowed down as she was being taken over. She lit it as her last shreds of humanity and free will were draining away. The reason for the kiss was to emphasize that from the fungus perspective this wasn't about violence, it was about "sex", about propagation that all species take part in. The infected become violent when there is resistance. The theme of the story is how love can be both transforming and redeeming as well as dangerous and even horrible.

    To touch on the spore discussion you had. Spores were a thing in the game. Gas masks were required to keep from breathing them in. When an infected was ready to die in the game, it would lay down somewhere and start producing spores. The showrunners decided it would be better to go in a different direction

    1. Show is very close to the game which was released in 2013. The major change is they chose not to adopt the spores of the cordyceps as it would have made it airborne and thus close to 0% chances of anyone surviving or all survivors to wear masks all the time.
    2. You guys should also check on how it spread from the flour and how they dodged that bullet in the 1st episode.
    3. I found it so interesting that they actually used real science to make this feel so real, one misstep in evolution here or there. Btw the fungus only aims to spread and not damage the host, the show made me realize that even in the game there was no body that was half eaten or such damage to the bodies. they pretty much had bites here or there but not much damage. Which is why Tess death scene is so interesting, she did not resist and thus he conversion was also not violent (even though I would think it's still violent, as its was not something she would have chosen)
    4. I do think the fungus creates kind of an armour on clickers and thus they don't die by single headshots. Yes, they use clicking as a form of echo location. The actors and markup artist this an amazing job in this scene. Reminded me of the raptors in the kitchen scene in Jurassic Park, I am sure Neil Druckmann (director of this episode and also the co-creator of the game) took inspiration from it.
    5. The worst part is why people are insistent that they are not zombies but infected. The brain is still there only the muscles are being hijacked by the fungus which is why they twitch. They are conscious and know they have no control of themselves anymore. In the game when you were sneaking around the runners, you could hear them crying.

    Also liked that Lisa took the feedback seriously and took some notes. This helps your audience learn something extra making your videos more valuable than simply watching the show or some reactors who have no idea of the the world outside of content creation based simply on their personality.

    The greatest thing to me in this episode is the dynamic between Tess and Joel. It perfectly shows the dynamic between them, Joel can be hot headed and grumpy and needs someone to calm him down and focus. Tess is more calm and hopeful, too willing to take risks for gains and needs someone help her survive.
    Joel clearly says this isn't worth it, and they need to go back, and Joel was correct. Tess has to keep Joel on track quite frequently as well.
    I think the tess ending was done better in the show than the movie, but they could easily go back and see how to improve it from the game.

  • @TheMostWanted92
    @TheMostWanted92 Рік тому

    In the games, the infection is spread through biting and spores, so the characters have to wear gas masks in infected areas, even Ellie although she is immune and doesn't really need it (but it's to help conceal the fact she's immune). The masks/spores also reduce visibility, so the gameplay can become more horror-y and get slowed down, as the characters are sneaking around the infected, because the clickers are very, very dangerous, just like in the show.
    The spores were removed in the show, because realistically all the people would become infected pretty fast if the infection is airborne and for more practical reasons, so that the actors don't have to wear masks half the time, which leads to all sorts of issues such as being unable to see the actor's faces. They replaced the spores with tendrils, that can alert the infected, which is a pretty cool idea as it brings the same air of danger, just in a different way.

    Everyone wonders why Tess stayed still like that. My theory is the cordyceps in tess prevented her. She was already showing signs of aggression towards Joel and Ellie in her final moments, and as the cordyceps sign said in episode 1, a neck/face infection only takes 15-20 mins.
    I think she couldn't move. Because Tess wouldn't have let that happen. The cordyceps knew.

    So ik ya'll said you don't want your thoughts/questions at the end answered, but some of them are things we've already seen the answers to on the show. And its kinda important to know in my opinion, because without that knowledge you'll end up missing more stuff down the road.
    1) the game's progression is almost exactly the same as the show for the major parts. The infection started in South America though, not Indonesia. Its not confirmed what foods exactly were infected, it was just some kind of produce (thats not a spoiler, you're supposed to know by now in the show that the flour was tainted. Its why they put so much emphasis on joel, sarah and tommy not eating pancakes, biscuits, cookies or cake when everything was going down. The old lady that turned first was having biscuits and cookies shoved in her mouth and then turned first.
    Also it would've been too late to stop the infection even if they did destroy the city at the beginning of this episode. That was 2 days before episode 1's start, so contaminated flour wouldve already been shipped out of the city. Plus we don't know how long its been going on, someone bit the first woman they found and 14 others were missing long enough to be reported. Infected flour already made it to the US. I think rhe scientist knew that too, its why she wanted to go die with her family rather than just try to escape the city
    2) Again this is something that you're supposed to pick up just from what we've seen so far- You do not need a headshot to kill them, but you do need to completely kill the body to stop it. The fungus needs to keep the person alive to use them, but things like pain dont matter. It will move the body until the body stops functioning. So the same logic applies, body shots are much easier to hit but might not kill it in the first shot. Headshots are pretty much guaranteed to drop them, but do yoy really wanna risk missing the head if its coming at you?
    Also the fungus keeps growing after the bodies dead, we already saw that in episode 1 with the dead infected on the wall in the sewers. The fungus was consuming the rest of the body to spread around the room. Episode 2 showed us why its doing that, to create the underground network that connects the infected together.
    3) When they're making out at the end.... no one knows what was going on lol. The "mouth tentacles" as people call them are entirely new, they never showed up in the games. So no one knows much about how they work besides that the infected use them to feed from bodies, and can also use them to connect to more mycelium in the ground.
    As someone who knows as much as you 3 about them, my guess is the infected was trying to share resources. Tess was already about to turn, so the infected didn't see a human standing there. It saw a part of its colony starving and trying to grow. So it came over and shared nutrients to help the fungus mature faster
    The fungus in each person and the fungus on the walls/in the ground are all part of one giant colony. When we see them all clustered together outside not moving, the fungus in the bodies are probably getting nutrients from the fungus in the ground, which in turn gets its nutrients from the dead bodies the fungus has no other use for

    TLDR: Good reaction, keep up the good work
    Just wanted to say that I'm glad I gave you guys a second shot, this episode felt a lot more balanced on the small talk aspect. I was one of those slightly annoyed by the amount of it on the last reaction, and I'd like to explain why, as you seemed to take the criticism personally (probably rightly so)
    First I will agree with the person that said on the last reaction that viewers already saw the episode and shouldn't care about the small talk over the episode playing (paraphrasing), while that's true I think it stems from people wanting you to stay immersed in the episode, not miss details/informations, appreciate the acting etc... and that's because (in my case and I'd think most ppl too) part of the fun of reaction channels are the theorizing on what's coming next and it can be frustrating if you start going the wrong way because you missed an info ore something. So I think the "good formula" would be react on the moment and elaborate after the episode that's why ppl recommended to take notes
    Also, I'll play the devil's advocate for the comments that might have felt harsher than intended. For some english might not be their native language (my case) and might read differently depending on the tone. But I don't doubt that some were just rude and not constructive criticism, we all know how the comment section can be. Another thing is, don't forget about the silent majority, we all know it's a thing among content creators too ;)
    Finally, I think the G shock running gag is growing on me ;) You've earned yourself another subscriber, I'll be back for the next one and prob check your other content too

    Hugo is wrong about the brain. Lisa is correct. one of the reasons commentors lose their minds when you say zombie is because the infected are NOT undead. the fungus must keep the host ALIVE, so (although Elise is right about the fungus being able to survive for a short time) the host can simply be killed in any way, including stabbed in the heart, and the "puppeteer" has no more control. when the host dies, there is no functioning nervous system to control the muscular system. the dead host just drops and remains where it fell. 👍well done, Lisa.

    Also in the game Tess dies fighting the FEDERA since she was already bit, allowing ellie and joel to escape (the federa were chasing them on/off since they were caught by that guard at end of episode 1).
