Hello, What is your procedure on how to do a burnout with a th400 reverse manual valvebody, custom direct drum 36 element sprag? Stay in first gear only ? No shifting into second while doing a burnout?

I was watching Jackstand and thinking the very same thing you were saying.

I have to be honest, I’ve never heard that it’s a bad idea to shift into neutral when going fast, and I’ve done it plenty in the past. But I’m going to follow your advice and not do it anymore! I was taught not to shut it off at highway speeds when I was young, so I’m okay in that department.
Thanks for the videos and your knowledge.

Now that I’ve slept on my comment, I did have something go wrong, maybe you can tell me if it was related? I left home one cold morning in Pittsburgh (30 years ago) to drive to work, and my th400 whined the first couple minutes. After that, it was quiet again, but I lost second gear breaking. Other than that, it was fine until I parked it six years later.

7:13 watched a recent video where the guy was using a cutoff wheel while holding on to the parts.
All i could say was get this man a vise!
Not to mention, and i/we /you all have done it while in a hurry and almost/did get bit by it.
Yeah not me anymore ,i see the danger approaching 😂
Kinda why i bought like 20 oairs of safety glasses and threw them all over the shop,so theres never an excuse and usually a pair is not mote than arms reach.
Im 51,i know the stupid 💩 i got away with when i was younger, but now id like to make it to retirement with all of my body parts. 😂

As always you are a wealth of info. Over the last 2 years we have been restoring the sons 66 Belair 2 door post. So far we have did all of it ourselves. When we got to the transmission we spent a lot of evenings watching your videos and following, I believe, all your recommendations. We have finally finished the paint job and are ready to pick out tires. Here is where I need some help. We would like to go with a 29 to 30" tire but I'm concerned due to lack of knowledge about correct tire to stall. The car is going to be for going to car shows with no intention to take it to the strip. No slicks and not tubed. I think I can fit a 10 inch tire under it. It will see in town and highway driving. It should weight around 3400lbs. Specs: Engine injected 454 stroked to 496. No power adders. Dyno numbers peak HP 707 @ 6000 RPM, peak torque 690 @ 5000RPM. Cam: Intake -242/ Exhaust -252 @50, lift 595/612, Lobe separation 110. Cam card recommended minimum 2500 stall. Trans TH400 original bolt on yoke. Added extra clutch and steel to each section changed to 34 element and replaced all shafts. Heavy duty drive shaft with chromoly yoke. Strange 35 spline locker with 370 gear. Had TCI spec the convertor. They spec'd TCI 241000 with 3400 stall speed. Did I screw up? Is this too much stall for my application? Either way what would you recommend on convertor and tire. Thank you in advance.

      Thanks!
The converter sounds like a good place to start, modern converters act quite tame driving normal.
If you were racing it might even be on the right side.
Interested to hear how the test ride goes!

@@mountainsgarage If I run a taller tire like a 30, on the highway at sustained speed it will keep my rpm below the 3400 that the stall is rated. Will this hurt the converter?

Perfect timing! My TH400 is almost done. Got me worried about my torque converter now. Maybe I'll send it to Coan for a checkup/flush. Transmission is being built by a guy who has been doing transmissions here in Michigan for 45 years. Does a lot of monster truck stuff. Thanks for video! Is that a Boston accent you possess?... or up in Maine? LOL

You need to do a video on how to rebuild the th400 governor, I came across my trans not shifting due to the valve inside the governor! was sticking and on the valve, the pinhole was plugged, After I cleaned everything and polished the valve, It works like new again!

Great content, I’ve been taking to a’guy & wondering if a’guy could turn/use a automatic transmission as a manual transmission on a sub 500hp drift car.. it doesn’t need to fully be decoupled but enough to act like free wheel to bring power back in or build a th400 to take alot of D-N-D-N-D not at higher speeds

I have a 1989 chevy c1500 with the TH400 and if I drive it easy it shifts nice but if I get on it a little it shifts hard. Do you know if this may be an easy fix? I just got the truck recently and it has 118000 miles and not sure if it's ever been rebuilt. I changed the fluid and filter. Ive been watching videos where people adjust it at the module and wanted to see what you would suggest I do? Thanks

There is a subject that I see a lot pertaining to downshifting a th400 with a manual valve body. Do you have any insight?

    • @mountainsgarage
      @mountainsgarage  Рік тому +2

Yes no problem doing it at reasonable RPM and speed. Not something you want to do at highway speeds.

Is there an online webpage or a place I can research for free on turbo 400s? Sort of like do and donts and common mods for upgraded power or durability? Thanks

Check out the Crankshaft Coalition TH400 page, and also the DIY TH400 Facebook group. You can post questions if you don’t already find the answers searching the page content.
