Please watch her sing At Last
I second this!!!
agreed
Absolutely 👍
Please Please Please 🙏 She is soooo classic and imo one of the greatest singers to walk this earth 🌎
Blow your doors off. Totally agree.
Nina Simone is another GREAT singer of that Era.
Love that you are opening up the genres.
Feeling Good is one of my all time favorites
Yes yes yes!
@@carladicarlo3255 Hard same
Nina jumped in my top 5 female talents The first time i saw her do Miss. Goddam live. We need more people like her today
NINA IS A MUST...
They don’t make songs like this anymore. And everything about her voice was natural. Pure.
This woman was my inspiration through so many years. Yes I’m an old old. Great grandma. But there’s never been anyone like Etta James.
Ella's Fitzgerald was another unsung legend.
Truth! I was born in 79 so I got lucky enough to enjoy some of the real soul before it disappeared ❤
Etta is such a stage presence, can you imagine being in that room. Another of her greats is "At Last".Perfection!!!
It's amazing how young people think their parents' music is trash & they'd never listen to older artists. This performance is proof that's not true. This performance is nearly 50 years old & it still hits like a brick in the face. There's a reason singers like Etta James, Nina Simone, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, etc. became legendary icons.
This was a master class performance ... not only Etta's vocal performance, but the way the band worked with her. These were some of the best musicians in the world.
A real masterpiece.
Etta James could sing anything she damn well pleased. She is considered one of the great voices of the 20th century. She's best known for the song "At Last" that's used at a lot of wedding receptions. "A Sunday Kind of Love' is another classic. She's inspired many singers who came later, like Christina Aguilera, Beth Hart, Janis Joplin,. Beyonce played her in the movie Cadillac Records.
At last--- by Etta James, another of her powerful songs
Back when there was actual talent . Etta is superb absolutely legendary ..
So happy you’re branching out like this. Etta James was truly one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time ❤
Extraordinary how Etta James does this song, changing from raspy, intense, passionate, shouting to the softest emotion that it's like the warmest caress. Amazing.
G0TTA DO "AT LAST" Love this reaction!!!!!!.....Peace out!!! HUGZZZZ
Yes please watch her sing At Last 👏👏👏❤
A voice like hers only comes along rarely ❤🎉
A superstar. I appreciate her more every time I see her. THIS is a singer.
I swear I was blessed with older parents. The music they listened to. ❤
The one and only miss Etta James........she was working that room......Her bog song is "At Last". A few years ago a movie wss made about her life and Beyonce played her..
I think the movie was Cadillac records.
She's great! I love her! She's a legend!
A glass in this context is a mirror, an old-time term - as in “looking-glass”. She holds it close and sees the reflection of the tears rolling down her face.
Good call. When she said she puts it to her lips it made me think of a glass of wine and seeing your reflection while drinking the pain away. Hauntingly beautiful lyrics.
Great songwriting. So sad. She’s holding the mirror to her face in a kind of despair, tormenting herself with a close-up view of the lips her man isn’t there to kiss anymore.
Etta is a definite legend love her even wt her struggles she still was so fkin great. R.I.P. beautiful 🙏😇 she had a bad addiction but she always blew all of us away. Powerful ❤❤❤ my generation 🎤💥💥
Oh, the beauty of this woman's soul!
She is my favorite ❤❤❤ she always hits my Soul❤ what a beautiful voice ❤❤❤❤❤
Beth Hart accompanied by Joe Bonamassa does this song justice. Amazing.
She was a force of nature! One of my greatest gifts was giving my dad tickets to see her before they both passed. #WhatUpDoe
She was so wonderful in concert! Had the pleasure of seeing her several times over the decades..💙💙💙💙
Another great breakup song is Janis Joplin's Ball and Chain (live at Monterey Pop Festival, 1967).
A mirror......A reflection in the glass(mirror) showed the tears upon my face...Keep doing what you're doing ....Good music is just GOOD music no matter the genre...Take care
Etta is one of the all time greats. One in a billion. Try watching the rendition by Beth & Joe live this too is a fabulous take on this all time classic. Please watch it
She was given co writing credits for this song. Should check Joe Bonamassa and Beth Hart live from Amsterdam version of this song. In my opinion the next best thing to Etta.
Etta was the best. Dig deep into her stuff, it’ll change your life
Amazing performance and interpretation of the song. I've never seen someone be able to sing like that without a mic and still sound so powerful.
Pure vocal gold. We need more artis like this
The cd in my car stereo is her Best of,
It is heartbreaking, but that's why it's called the blues, Darlin'. Etta is a classic talent, such a gifted singer.
Wow, thank you for covering this song. That’s a great friend who recommended this to you. Good LORD! lol. Such a beautiful song.
Always love hearing her voice, such a legendary song of pure emotional blues.
Etta James is amazing
I love Etta man what a voice she had. This and At Last are two of my fave songs by her.
Beth Hart did this song live in Germany. Awesome. Beth's live performance of 'Am I the One' will blow you away.
If you love Etta as much as we all do, you have GOT to watch the superb documentary Muscle Shoals. It's about the studios in Alabama where a ton of the best music of the 20th C was made. It's the story of Rick Hall and the Swampers, and it'll change the way you look at American music.
Great documentary. Learned a lot. So many great artists came through Muscle Shoals.
Yes, please reaction to "At Last"! One of the best songs ever written, and the best version ever.
Love her voice. I've probably not heard her sing in about 30 yrs.
I think the most perfect connection of song and voice is Etta doing 'At Last'.
At Last!
At Last!
At Last by Etta James!!
So much soul. I love her.
Thank you. Etta was a gift to us all.
This is The Blues!! Etta and SRV, 2 of the best
I was gonna skip this video when it came on and figured hey, why not. Damn when she did it with no mic... I got the chills
Etta is one of the best blues singers that came out in the 60s/70? Check out her version of "At Last". It'll change how you listen to music.
Pure soul!
OK, straight to Spotify for deep immersion in Etta James. Thank you
Saw her live in Atlanta. In-f’ing-credible!
Damn this song hits me hard. I've got goose bumps all over. This rips my heart out! Heard it live a few times but not with Miss Etta. Wow.
She hits you deep in your soul.
This is my favorite version of this. So much power and emotion. No mic needed. Her presence is the microphone. Great cover of this by Gov’t Mule on floydivision YT channel. Just music and a still shot of guitarist and singer Warren Haynes. (Excellent blues guitarist and vocalist)
Also check out my Spotify playlist It’s a Man’s World… lots of great songs from this time and genre. Also some great Jazz, some Tom Waits, Janis Joplin and a couple Concrete Blonde (Johnette Napolitano vocals, James Mankey guitar) covers of Janis, Jimi, and James Brown.
Keep em coming! This is when music made you feel!
🤛😎👍 🔥🌳🌬️💨
At Last and Outta The Rain are 2 of my favorites by her.
I was Soooo stunned you've never heard of Etta James! Welcome to true Soul music 🎶 🎵 looking forward to future reactions! Glad you're venturing out to other genres. Much of Hip Hop was inspired by artists like Etta and based around Jazz
Etta James was so amazing. I forgot how much I missed her voice.
So out of your comfort zone, I do have two suggestions; Lisa Fischer live "How Can I Ease The Pain" and Heatwave "Always and Forever" live. Both are incredible!
Love how you are branching out. I like my music eclectic.
She was an alcoholic and drug addict for most of her life and you can hear the pain in her voice. One of the greatest singers to ever live. Her stuff goes way back. You got a lot of listening to do. Beyoncé did an awesome job playing her when she was young and Chess Records was getting started in the movie Cadillac Records.
Just came across your channel. I love watching the reaction of younger people who come across some of the great performers from decades past. Thank you for sharing your experience discovering Etta James.
This was possibly her comeback concert, after addiction had taken her out of the performance scene for several years.
You and Black Pegasus reaction to
This song really warm my heart
You definitely need to go through
Her catalogue you won't be disappointed ❤
Such a classic. ❤
If you mess with the blues, big Etta gonna slap your face
4:29 Etta James was an early blues singer. Right around the time of Muddy Waters and those. She was an addict. Of 2 lethal substances. She didn't just sing it. She lived it. Obama totally disrespected Etta James having Beyonce sing Ettas song at a white house dinner. That song should have been sung by Etta herself at that dinner. The movie Cadillac records was loosely based on a true story. Definitely worth a watch. We're talking all the way back when the electric guitar was new.
I really appreciate that you are willing to go into more music. Different music. Your reactions are amazing. Please keep giving. You are amazing!!!
You should come once at the Montreux Jazz Festival! Concerts are always so special!
Hello from Switzerland!
This is one of the most heartbreaking but beautiful song ever. Etta owns this. Beyoncé played her in Cadillac records and her performance of this was also amazing.
My favorite movie
Blues!! Blues is sad music. Some personalities relate to sad more than happy tunes. “At last” Etta James. It’s her love song.
You gotta do At Last it's legendary
it is music
A lot of people covered Muddy Waters’ I Just Wanna Make Love to You (love the Righteous Brothers version) and Etta’s cover sounds exactly like you’d think the title would sound lol!
Etta James made some cracking records. This is my first time watching her live and I was struck by how she's like a female version of Al Green in terms of the emotion and quirkiness displayed in her performance. If you like this I strongly urge you to watch Al Green's live Soul Train performance of 'Jesus Is Waiting' or 'For The Good Times', guaranteed hit in the feels every time.
One of greatest voice .Sad that she had so heartbreaking personal life.
This is one of those video's that I listen to en enjoy for years now! Who needs AutoTune with singers like her!
Talk about soul!
Saw etta James play at a bar in Newport or best show ever
I would love to see you react to Bonnie Raitt, "I Can't Make You Love me". I love Bonnie Raitt, and if you ever get the chance to see her live. GO!
You just heard greatness! The inimitable Etta James. She left a hole in music when she left us, but left a piece of her heart for us to hear. Great reaction, thanks. 👍
I have always loved your reactions, and so glad your checking out some other music. Man there is so much mind blowing music out there. Thanks Cliff, for being you.
A "glass" here is another word for a mirror.
Damn your eyes is another great one from her.
Heart breaking and true!
I'm glad your broadening your music horizon. There is so much great music out there. You tube was a god send for people who love music. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on these older much loved songs.
This song can break me and lift me all at once
That is a great room acoustically, which is one reason why she can deliver without the mic. Very little distortion, take a look at the ceiling to see why it is a great room for sound.
Lots of covers of this have been done. For me the best one ever is Beth & Joe - I'd Rather Go Blind - Live in Amsterdam. Beth put every thing she had into this and Joe provided a guitar that sang the same sad song. That's Beth Hart & Joe Bonamassa. Both are outstanding.
Percy Sledge, "When a man loves a woman" is kinda twinned wuth this song in my mind, for some reason. And Janis Joplin "Take another little piece of my heart".
Coulda been a compact like lipstick compact but more likely a glass of something, like you said. Raw power in that voice.
Love it and I am going to start watching your reactions
You have to watch the documentary, "Muscle Shoals", there is a great part in it about her.
If you want to see a great performance The Bee Gees too much heaven is a must you'll never hear better harmonies. This was an amazing performance from Etta so emotional. Great reaction as usual my friend and Peace out 🙏 ✌️ ☮️
She was simply AMAZING! An old friend of mine was Etta’s touring guitarist for a while. (Cliff, your dad probably knows him too: Apache from Little Caesar). She’s the one who turned him on to heroin. No, really. She was a real character, in case you couldn’t tell.
Also Cliff, you know Etta James from the biopic “Cadillac Records” starring Beyoncé & the ensuing beef they had over the song “At Last.” ✌🏼
WHAT a W B
You must listen to Beth Harts version featuring Joe Bonnamasa
It may be the first time hearing Etta James, but it's not your first time hearing this song. You reacted to a 13 yr old Angelina Jordan singing this song with her tribute to Etta while she sat on her couch and played around with how raspy she could be. It was a performance that stood out to me. I had hoped you recognized it. You may want to revist Angelina's version now that you heard the original. They do make them like Etta now
Sweet!
LOVE when a reactor steps outside of his wheelhouse...some I love, but their channel gets hijacked by the same guys who are one-genre, and you know what their reaction is going to be, so I just bail. 'At Last' is my fav. by her. Etta was a drinker and was abt lit here, and K, not judging, just is what it is (LOVE Fleetwood/Elton/Whitney- can always tell when they are 'going fast' on some blow..esp. young Elton, omg, and k, blow is fun, to each their own)...have always heard when you drink your true feelings come out. Real tears they were. Fine job young man!
Watch Chuck Berry and Etta James performing Rock and Roll Music (1986), Eric Clapton and Keith Richard's (Rolling Stones) are also playing on the song. It's a fantastic energetic song and fun to watch.
❤❤❤❤❤
Hi Cliff, maybe you could make another channel that checks out other genres:
Cliff Classics (Motown, Swing, Blues etc.)
Cliff Riffs (Rock, Metal, Indie Bands etc.)
Cliff Charts (Pop, Dance etc.).
