I'm a Chinese. The first language i learnt outside my native one was English. The second one, being learnt right now is Spanish. Once I master Spanish, I will try learning German. Catalan will come after German. I am 36 years old, hope I can speak some Catalan when I enjoy my retirement house to-be in Calella de Palafrugell.
My college choir will be singing in Montserrat and La Sagrada in May. We are trying to learn a few words and your channel is great. Moltes gràcies!

"S'il vous plait" : Your pronunciation was perfect! ;-) I also find interesting how it compares with the French language... Even more so if you include occitan in the mix. I can see a continuum between these languages.
Hola Ricky haha merci, molt amable (thanks, very kind) ;) You are right! My knowledge about Occitan is almost non-existent, but there is certainly a very interesting connection there.
I also agree with Maksim 5078 from Milano - I love Romance languages: Catalan, Spanish, Italiano, French -we can all thank Maksim's ancestors from Roma! We English are very reluctant to try to learn at least some other languages (few of us can even speak Welsh and they live right alongside us!) And the language is derived from the original Celtic British (similar to Cornish and Breton) which the inhabitants spoke before the Romans, the Saxons, the Danes etc. started thowing their weight (and spears) about! In particular, we Europeans should be much closer (no, I didn't vote for Brexit) and the world would be a happier, safer place. (I'll just put my soapbox away now!) I am currently doing a study of common phrases of Portuguese, Spanish, Catalan, French and Italian. It is amazing how they are connected in crazy ways. We are thinking about buying a boat and traveling up and down the coast line, making it nice to understand all of them.
That sounds like a very unique and Mediterranean experience!

If you ever do other videos in the future, here's an idea: words linked together when spoken. This is something I hear with your useful videos, yet it is never addressed directly.
As a French speaker, this is a familiar linguistic feature but it is also something foreigners mess up and how you can easily tell if someone is a native speaker or not. I think I get the gist of it already in Catalan, but maybe there is something I overlooked.
In English, Dinner used to mean the main meal of the day, served around noon. Supper, now seldom used in North America, used to mean a lighter meal served in the evening. I guess supper is derived from French word "souper" which in turn is related to Catalan " sopar"
In belgian french "diner" is the central meal at around noon, and 'souper" is the meal served in the evening. This makes catalans a little bit belgians😂

After visiting Barcelona several times I am moving there this August and this is SO HELPFUL. I can understand most written Catalan because I am fluent in Spanish and French but understanding it when spoken has been a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT story. Hearing you speak in these videos is wonderful. Also - is it me, or do the "r"s at the end of words often not get pronounced? And does the closed "e" get pronounced a little bit like an a??

As an acknowledgemt of the Catalonian Identity, should I travel to Barcelona I would try hard to speak Catalan instead of Spanish. To me Catalan is a "familiar Language" since - for many respects - it resembles my Language ( Italian ) and my Milan dialect. Furthermore Catalan is spoken in the Sardinian City of Alghero. Least but not last, a sort of "cross" between Spanish and French is not infrequent and it actually makes Catalan a unique Language. For example, "Sortida" could be considered as a cross between the French "Sortie" and the Spanish "Salida". We also have "Sortita" in Italian, but it is an "out of use" word.
Hola :) I totally agree with your attitude as I always try to learn 5 key words any time I travel as a sign of respect and I'm pretty certain that anyone would gladly switch to Spanish (or even English if possible) if they realice you can't follow Catalan. Sí! I also find it fascinating to think that in l'Alguer (in Catalan) they still speak it in spite of the differences.
Ihere is also a sinonimus word of sortida which is eixida (uscita) in italian the verb is eixir (uscire).
To be honest in Barcelona city you're probably better off with Spanish. Most other place will have more of a mix but in the city Spanish is the main language. Similar in Valencia, where in the towns surrounding Valencia you'll hear a lot of Valenciano but in the city little to none.
I was in Sabadell, and Castellar, and there people mix the two a lot.
In Girona you'll hear a lot of Catalan in urban areas.
@@xaviermadorell In my dialect (notrh Italy) you can use the word "surtida" when someone says something strange or rude or unexpected, literally "something that slips out of your mouth" :D

The pronunciation of teniu sounds Portuguese. I'm not sure about the word itself, but the phonetics are distinctly Portuguese. Moreover, is pa amb tomaquet like focaccia bread?
Hola! Yes, some for some people Catalan sounds similar to Portuguese. Pa amb tomàquet is just bread with tomato (it can be different type of breads!)
