Okay here are my pointers after using this video!
    1) There is no replacement for cutters when grabbing springs, needle nose pliers will slip.
    2) Be sure to grease ALL contact points, my car had 8 of them. Be sure to look at the bottom meeting points too.
    3) You might not need to change your drum brakes if they are squeaking, you might just need to disassemble and re-grease. My car with over 100k still had the same amount of shoe left as a new set.
    4) Use brake cleaner on your new drum inside contact points to remove any gunk from the factory.
    5) Put your car in neutral and spin the drums, they should bind up and stop pretty quickly. If you don't get it tight enough you will still roll with your e-brake fully engaged. If it is too tight, you will have to use screws to remove the drum and start over. Take the time to get this right.

Good video but you’re missing 2 main points:
    1) the emergency brake lever transfer to the new shoe.
    2) lubricants on the auto adjuster.
There is also a 2 shoe retaining spring seats. You only added the top one when fastened the shoes to the pin. In addition, forgot to mention how to adjust the adjuster from the access hole on the backing plate.
    Good video though.

PSA : rear drum brakes are no joke. I recommend you outsource this job that is generally due at 90K for hard drivers & 125K for gentle drivers. I studied several UA-cam videos. I downloaded the service manual. I bought specialty drum brake tools. I was just going to clean & regrease where the pads contact the back plate. Seemed like a straightforward procedure with my UA-cam knowledge & couple pages of service manual exploded PDF's. What took 5 minutes on a UA-cam toke over an hour on one drum for me ( I've done struts, front brakes, radiator swaps, alternator swaps before, so I'm not a beginner)
I studied the picture I took of the ," before ."
I after struggling for an hour, I finally reassembled and doubled checked my assembly.
Well after taking a short test drive, and not having resistance from my console area parking brake handle, I open the drum again. Turns out, in my 10+ attempts at finessing the springs and position of pads & levers, I discovered that somehow the parking brake cable came off from it's attachment point and got sheared off.
So now I created a $350 premature rear brake job for myself.
    Lesson learned .

sheared bolts have to be replaced, and if the calliper mount is ruined, you have to buy the whole assembly and replace that too. If you have drum e brakes, they adjust by tightening the nuts on the cable. If you have disc e brakes, they are not adjustable.

you grab it with cutting pliers that are old and dull, then pull it back and clamp down and the spring stays in place. If you like my car help, be sure to watch my live car talk show every saturday morning at 10 AM CST on google events. Thanks for the instructions, it was pretty easy to do on my 97' Ford Mondeo, I actually ended up changing the cylinders as well and bleed the rear brake lines, it's braking really well except for the handbrake, it won't hold, you actually have to pull it hard to stop the car on a hill, I've adjusted both drums and the handbrake leveler but it still requires force to pull it and lock the rear wheels.
Brakes are fine otherwise, they're holding up very well, no weird noises or ABS errors.

3:25 I see that took you a couple of tries (extra scratch marks on the metal thing that the spring connects to)

  • @scottykilmer
    @scottykilmer  11 років тому

it could, start by pulling off the brakes on the back and checking there. But if there is still some shoes left, tighten the adjuster on the brake cables, they do stretch over time

Wow I wished I'd watched this before almost taking a sledge hammer to the entire car! This job can be very difficult and frustrating to say the least. They make specially designed tools just for this job- which a should have purchased years ago. I was trying to do this job the hard way and was disgusted by the other youtube videos where they have taken the hub off or the bolts out of the piston so it can be moved- THEN they say 'see, it's easy'. NO it's NOT. I'm SO fed up with UA-camrs who lie and only show the easy part. Guess they have never had a frozen bolt, or worse, one that has broken! There's a reason why Scotty is such a successful UA-camr. HE'S HONEST!

they are self adjusting, pull off the wheels and see if they are worn out, or if the wheel bearings there are worn out and wobble.

@BIGRAE93 You should have replaced or turned the rotors, OR used higher quality pads. Cheaper pads are actually harder and make more noise. Scotty

@moofushu You have to put a pressure tester gauge in the number one cylinder, then see if the pressure rises as you crank it toward what you assume is TDC Scotty

@ScienceOfThePS3 you can just remove the top spring, move the shoes out of the way, then unbolt the old one and put a new one in. all 10 mm bolts and nuts on the back side to get it off.

Dont get me wrong, this is a great video but these are actually fairly simple brakeshoes, having just done some on a skoda fabia, they took nearly 6 hours of work and ive potentially broken the wheel cylinder in the process which is now going to need a mechanic, this video makes it look so much easier than it actually is, just forewarning anyone thinking about actually doing this, its genuinely really difficult on some cars depending on the placement of the springs.

So this was super helpful, although my car must be a later version than in your video. Two huge points - one
I banged the hell out of that outer casing until i researched that you need the parking break off.
two. my emergency break stopped working after this. Have no clue where to go from here other than bringing to shop, which was the thing I was trying to avoid in the first place. I live in hicks ville. There are not shops that I can simply take my car too :(

Just want to mention for other users watching this video is that he forgot to mention that the leading (primary brake shoe) is smaller than the trailing (secondary brake shoe). Most newer cars now days use duo servo drum brakes, hence called Primary shoe (small) = less friction material and secondary shoe (big) = more friction material. So when you change em make sure that it is that way and don't put two (primary) on one side and two (secondary) on the other XD or your car will pull to one side

you turn the adjuster with a screwdriver while holding the auto adjuster rod out of the way so you can turn it.
