cool suggestion and a handy little device. Do you have any recommendations for a setup to power pumps and heaters? are deep-cycle batteries and inverters a good option?
Love it so in a event of a hurricane power outage you can just stock up on batteries until your power Ian restored or you can transfer your fish to a new location.
Hey Kev, Great videos! I was wondering if you know the approximate run time of this backup pump if the batteries are fresh? Also what do you use to clean the water deposits on your aquarium. You could use a Y adapter to your normal Air line and Air stone with a check valve that way Air is always coming out the same plane not stressing the fish
Hi sees most of your videos, this is definitely a good video. I just want to ask you if we keep the pump under in the cabinet will the water flow through the hose and damage the pump while it's not working....?
Its possible. After its already been on. When power comes back on and it cuts off, you could get a reverse syphon. The solution to that though is to put a check valve in your air line so water only flows one way and not the other 👍
You shouldnt mix peacocks and Mbunas for several reasons...I think the biggest reason is their diet. Protein rich food required for healthy peacocks will kill mbuna.
Kevin thanks for all the critical information on your videos. I have 135 Gallon cichlid tank . how many of these silent air b11 units do you recommend ? Do you think 2 units are sufficient?
Or do you recommend another type of backup air pump for bigger aquariums ? Thanks in advance. I really enjoy watching and learning from your videos Thank you again
I use twin ac/dc air pumps running two sponge filters in my arowana tank. When there's a power outage and my sump stops, i got two sponges running plus aeration.
Hi Kev, really useful video as usual, I have one question though the B111 is suitable for up to 29 gallons apparently, so for your overstocked tank in the video is that all you use?
Yes, but remember this is just an emergency backup so you still have air in the tank if power goes out while no one is home. It will automatically turn on. You would still need some kind of manual battery operated air pump to use until the power comes back.
I didn’t read all of the comments below but just in case no one mentioned it there really should be a check valve placed in any air pump system, a check valve will keep the water from siphoning back towards the pump and possibly flooding you at ground level.
What air pump do you use for your 210 gallon I have one as well and can’t find a strong enough air pump. I do have wavemakers as well but I want to have both
Maybe its a good idea to attach the b11 on a spongefilter ? That rest in the fishtank so beneficial bacteria will gather and when the power falls out the b11 will go on and also have beneficial bacteria running ?
My husband and I lost over $200 worth of fish when my town was out of electricity for 5 days and I lost some really good fish. You have no idea how guilty I felt it was when it was cold too we were constantly blowing bubbles using a plastic hose. The only reason we did that is because nowhere within 100 miles of us had a backup air pump in stock. My questions for you if you know is do you have any idea if anybody has made a backup heat source? Like what they do with the air pump something you can put batteries in to warm it when you have no electricity?? Also the B11 will one be enough for a 55 gallon or more tank?
I have a 65 gallon stocked with balas and Angel's. Just bought another 65 and was thinking of stocking it with cichlids, are the water parameters similar for them?
If you mean African Cichlids then no, Water parameters are very different for Cichlids, specifically PH and water Temp. Check my playlist on African Cichlids, may help out...ua-cam.com/play/PLP5OXTIIDO8MG9hyJ8PjbC33zEbcyy8__.html
Thank you , 🙏🏻 so much for this video. I am going to buy one of those Back up Batteries. I had a bad experience with my first 29 gallon tank due to bad information I got from the pet shop. Anyways , I decided to give a second try. I have a question for you to see if you can help me. Recently, I saw a micro bubbles back wall in a fish tank. Can I have my back hung filter machine ( Fluval ) and this micro bubbles at the same time ? Or the sponge filter with this Micro bubbles back wall ? I am afraid that I will kills my fishes because of too much bubbles. Thanks and have a great day. God Bless you and congratulations for your webpage. It is beautiful. 🙋🏻♀️
@@KaveManAquatics Ahhhh, you are so sweet and very kind. You took the time to answer my questions. Thank you and happy new year 2024 God bless you always. 🙏🏻
Hey Kev. I have both my tanks hooked up to a ups. On a power outage it runs the filter and the bubble wall for around 4 hours. Can’t run the heaters though as this kills the ups battery within an hour. I am planning on getting another UPS incase the power it our for 8 hours.
You can buy a plastic "y" hose fitting to connect both silent air and regular air pump to one stone. This way you will not have an air stone doing nothing
Great video. Do you know of something that Keeps everything on the Aquarium when the power outage goes out? Meaning not just the Oxygen the light, filter, everything?
Question I just bought an ink bird controller for heaters and it has 2 settings that I can set heat to to come on and turn off ..what do u suggest I set the settings at ..what I mean I can set it at 81 degrees and it turns heaters on and set second setting at 82 and it will go off.how will a 1 degree difference between off and on affect fish ?
Hey Kev, I bought like 4 of these pumps for my tanks, on my 210 I did not have a check valve on and forgot to get one, big mistake. I had at least 10gals of water under my tank and didn't notice right away disaster needless to say. On top of all that, the FX6 I put in about 4 months ago, that I decided to clean after all this time. Was never hooked up properly I never tighten down the clamps on the hoses🙃 So as soon as I pull the unit out from under the tank POW more water every where, what a day. So in a hurry to get this tank up and running WOW. But anyway I have a quest about the B11 air pump, will this be enough for a 210 tank or should I get two or is there something else I could use?
Sorry to hear about all your troubles. It's the unfortunate learning curve of the hobby. 1 B11 back up air pump should be enough because its just a back up to be used if power goes out when no one is home. The B11 will auto start on its own. But Its not intended to be the only sourse of oxygen while the power is out.
Not sure why you have to reconnect them. They should be snug and never come off. You definitely want to have check valves on each line to prevent backflow in case of power outage or if they get disconnected.
Hmm..Dont think it would split well between 3 tanks. Its not really that strong to maintain 1 tank. Its just there as an emergency back up to be run temporarily until power comes back. A few hours at the most
Hi Kev, so this is a new hobby for me and I have a 75 gallon tank with 3 koi fish, I cant get the water to be clear. I have cleaned, change water and all the steps and still..... I have consider adding a eco rock... help!
Is there back up device like this for aquarium heaters instead? If not, what can be done in case of a power outage to keep the cichlids tank water warm enough?
Unless you live in a really cold environment, your room temperature will be fine to keep the tank stable enough. In case it really gets cold where the tanks temp is drastically dropping, only an external generator of some sort is going to help you. And those are expensive...
The sb11 is meant to be a temporary solution when power goes out and no one is around to notice. Not a stand alone until power comes back. There are other battery-operated pumps that are much stronger that also monitor the power but those are to be used as the main air pump. They are more expensive also. But if you have power outages a lot its a great investment. Here's one - amzn.to/3McnTkM
Not sure, but you can use the airstone that it comes with. Keep in mind this is just a temporary backup until you can get your main source of O2 back 😁
Great video as usual, maybe my question is a subject of another video idea for you so here goes, I was told today when talking to a fish store about backup air pumps during a power outage, not to turn the filter back on if the outage had been for several hours because it would deliver dead bacteria back into the tank?. I know you advise people to be extremely careful when doing cannister cleans not contaminate the bacteria, I wonder how long the bacteria can survive when the filter isn't running, is it a valid point that the bacteria can die off so quickly over a few hours? More importantly if the bacteria may have died off what could you do to save the fish? - Nige UK
This is a very good question. unfortunately there isnt a clear and concise answer. Yes, bacteria can die off in a canister that has been without oxygen, yes toxic nitrogen gas can build up in the canister. How long does it take for this to happen, that is the hard part to determine. The best answer I can give is from my own experience. I once left a canisters valve closed for about 24 hours (by accident of course) and without thinking of the bacteria die off or the gas accumulation, I simply opened the valve back up and allowed the canister to run properly. I had no ammonia spikes due to loss of BB or any fish loss from any potential nitrogen gasses building up in the canister. So...take that with a grain of salt though lol
@@KaveManAquatics Thanks Kev for your prompt reply as usual, luckily we're not really affected by power outages in the UK though knowing the effects of a severe power failure to the tank is useful to know - cheers
I have a 125 gallon tank. Is one enough? What about a battery back up like they use for computers ? It is strong enough ? Or necessary. I was think the heaters were the most important but I guess air is more important ?
One is enough...but keep in mind, its only a temporary solution. Just gives you time to notice the problem and find a better solution. If You plan for this to be the solution until power comes back, then I would double up.
FAITH SIKES Hi!! Actually no, I had a bunch of air stones stocked from a package I bought a while ago so I used one of those because it’s a bit bigger than what comes with the SAB11...but the included air stone works well too if you don’t have anything else.
Ok great we are getting the set to protect my fish, I had friend that lost a large piranha because of a malfunction on the thermometer so I am learning so much from your videos. Thank you for your help!!!!
This will work fine for any size tank. Keep in mind its just an auto backup temporary fix that will start on its own until you can get home and add more surface agitation. You can schedule a consultation with me here - kavemanaquatics.com/kaveman-coaching
I am looking for a new air pump for my soon to get 75gallon tank what is a good air pump for a tank that size or which one do u have in your tank that is always on and I will also be getting the battery powered one to
It's only a temporary solution until power comes back or until you get home to manually turn on a more powerful battery operated pump if needed. The beauty of this one is that it turns on by itself when power goes out.
great point. That is something to be aware of. If you go too long without power you made need to keep an eye on your cycle. But keep in mind the the BB living on the surfaces in your tank will stay alive and they will quickly reproduce.
No 1 is enough. Remember this only acts as a back up that turns on in case no one is home to correct the problem. if you find this pump on you should have a standard battery operated pump ready for you to manually install and turn on.
I'm curious. Your wave maker I assume is wayyyy more powerful than the back up air stone I assume? The video air stone in video didn't seem like it would be strong enough for an over stocked tank like this. Is that true? I assume if power goes out than anything is better than nothing but was just curious about this thought.
Your thoughts are correct! The backup airstone is only going to buy you some extra time to correct the situation. It won’t provide the necessary amount of surface agitation long term.
Thanks man. I have a 180 gallon salt water tank and had 10 fish and 1 eel. Must of the fish I had for 10-15 years. Yes, that’s right. I came home and my tank was off, and all the fish were dead except the eel. My cat stepped on the power strip button which turned it off and caused the sump to overflow. All of my beautiful long living fish were dead. I don’t know how my eel made it but I’ve had him for at least 15 years. Will this pump generate enough oxygen for 180 gallon tank and how long will the batteries last once it kicks on? Thanks
Wow I’m sorry to hear that, I know our fish mean a lot to us. So sorry for your loss. This pump works based on the amount of fish you have taking up oxygen in your tank, not necessarily how big your tank is. And it’s only there temporarily as a backup until someone realizes there’s a problem and fixes it. So I’d say yes, this pump would have kicked on and bought you more time to get home and find the problem. But if you wanted to feel even safer get 2 just in case! Again sorry for your loss man! 😕
B W It should be enough “temporarily”. It will buy you some time to get home from work, or wake up in the morning and notice that the power went out. Then you can use other methods to oxygenate the tank while waiting for power. Maybe have a few more battery operated pumps on standby with brand new batteries. So when power fails and you hear this back up kick on then you can pull out your other battery operated ones and add more 👍
You wont have to worry about the heater too much. It will take very long to have significant change in temperature. Hopefully power returns well before the temp change effects the fish. The main concern is the oxygen.
I am sorry I didn't see this video before, last month we had a power outage and was not at home when I return 6 of my African ebunas were dead that was the worst feeling ever a lot fish hobbyist lost fish one guy lost 300 koi 😭😭😭
F D A sponge filter with no air going to it does nothing. Just attach to an air stone an tuck it in a corner. If it kicks on the air stone will provide just as much air as the sponge filter would. Your filters can remain off during a power outage, your main concern is just air.
m.media-amazon.com/images/S/aplus-media/vc/274d9623-255b-442c-a838-cf8c2080c5aa._SR150,300_.jpg I was looking up on the air pump you recommended and it says maximum for 29 gallons, this one I posted, says up to 100 gallons will it do the same job?
Not sure how that one works...the one I’m using is basically just temporary until your power comes back or can correct the power problem. The one you linked looks like something to be used all the time as a stand alone air pump that also acts as a back up....if that’s what you were looking for
I started my admiration for the fish hobby at the end of august 2020 as a result of the lockdown where I live in Puerto Rico, at the present time I now I have 7🙈🙈🙈. I recently installed solar panels, but still feel insecure and I want to have plan B if electricity should go out for long.... thanks for your insight, and any recommendations are very well appreciated.

@@KaveManAquatics Yes I also have a generator, butttttttttt with the hurricane the lines for gasoline were unbearable both my husband and I made lines for 7 hours just to get a limited amount of gas for the car and a portable tank. I lived in Miami Florida.
I used Aquatop BREZA Battery Powered Air Pump w/ AC Power Failure Sensor. Attached to Sponge Filter
Nice!
You could use a Y adapter to your normal Air line and Air stone with a check valve that way Air is always coming out the same plane not stressing the fish
Yea that’s a great tip, thanks! 😊
It's hurricane season, and we already have trouble brewing in the gulf of Mexico. I'm fixing to buy 3 more of these air pumps.
Yes definitely stuck up now!!!! And dont forget the extra batteries! Good luck!!

The solution to that though is to put a check valve in your air line so water only flows one way and not the other 👍
I wish I had seen this video earlier! I got an battery airpump but not automatic, I didn't knew the made this thing.

Your thoughts on mixed Cichlid tank. Peacocks & Mbunas. Thanks for any info you have.
You shouldnt mix peacocks and Mbunas for several reasons...I think the biggest reason is their diet. Protein rich food required for healthy peacocks will kill mbuna.
Whats the best places to put in your aquarium equipment so that it cleans properly
Kevin thanks for all the critical information on your videos. I have 135
Gallon cichlid tank . how many of these silent air b11 units do you recommend ?
Do you think 2 units are sufficient?
Or do you recommend another type of backup air pump for bigger aquariums ?
Thanks in advance. I really enjoy watching and learning from your videos
Thank you again
I use twin ac/dc air pumps running two sponge filters in my arowana tank. When there's a power outage and my sump stops, i got two sponges running plus aeration.
That’s awesome! Nice set up 👍
Hi Kev, really useful video as usual, I have one question though the B111 is suitable for up to 29 gallons apparently, so for your overstocked tank in the video is that all you use?
Yes, but remember this is just an emergency backup so you still have air in the tank if power goes out while no one is home. It will automatically turn on. You would still need some kind of manual battery operated air pump to use until the power comes back.
I have multiple tanks 6 how would I plug them along with my filters and heaters? Thank you
I didn’t read all of the comments below but just in case no one mentioned it there really should be a check valve placed in any air pump system, a check valve will keep the water from siphoning back towards the pump and possibly flooding you at ground level.
Very good advice. I have check valves on all my air lines…don’t remember if I mentioned it in this video.
It only runs when power goes out. So you'll need something else to constantly send air to your sponge filter.

Hey Kev. I have both my tanks hooked up to a ups. On a power outage it runs the filter and the bubble wall for around 4 hours. Can’t run the heaters though as this kills the ups battery within an hour. I am planning on getting another UPS incase the power it our for 8 hours.
Thats awesome! 💪
You can buy a plastic "y" hose fitting to connect both silent air and regular air pump to one stone. This way you will not have an air stone doing nothing
That is an awesome tip!! Thanks!
Great video. Do you know of something that Keeps everything on the Aquarium when the power outage goes out? Meaning not just the Oxygen the light, filter, everything?
Thanks! To keep everything on you would basically need a back up generator for your entire home. But thats a pretty penny!
@@KaveManAquatics Damnnnnn That's Exspensive
Yup! Lol
Sean S Thats a great tip! Didn’t know about that. You’re right, in the city power can be back in an hour and that would work great.
Thats exactly how I set mine, 1 degree difference. That 1 degree is going to have minimal impact on the fish, they’ll be fine. 👍
I have a 185 gallon aquarium. Does any pump work for a backup, or would I need to buy multiple backups for that big of an aquarium? Thank Kev.
Did you put a check valve on the backup air line?
Yes sir, I did. Better to be safe than sorry.
Any tips or tricks on aquarium air lines I constantly have to reconnect them and worry about the possibilities of disconnection while I'm at work
Not sure why you have to reconnect them. They should be snug and never come off. You definitely want to have check valves on each line to prevent backflow in case of power outage or if they get disconnected.
How powerful is it? I have a 20 long and two 5’s in my office. I’m wondering if I could split it between the three tanks?
Hmm..Dont think it would split well between 3 tanks. Its not really that strong to maintain 1 tank. Its just there as an emergency back up to be run temporarily until power comes back. A few hours at the most
Hi Kev, so this is a new hobby for me and I have a 75 gallon tank with 3 koi fish, I cant get the water to be clear. I have cleaned, change water and all the steps and still..... I have consider adding a eco rock... help!
Could be many reasons why you water wont clear up. My free ebook will definitely help, check it out - bit.ly/H2O
How many of these you recommend for a 75 gallon tank?
1 is enough. It’s just a temporary oxygen source until you get home to fix the problem.
I have power outages a lot you recommended sb11 but i have 20g, 125 g and 55g how do i handle the larger tanks
Any advice on quieter air pumps?
Use wave makers if you can! lol I hate air pumps too. Watch this - ua-cam.com/video/O36QbOiZJvw/v-deo.html
What size air stone is that conn
connected to the B11
Hi Kevin, is the air stone on your battery back up the one that comes with the pack?
FAITH SIKES Hi!! Actually no, I had a bunch of air stones stocked from a package I bought a while ago so I used one of those because it’s a bit bigger than what comes with the SAB11...but the included air stone works well too if you don’t have anything else.

I only see one on Amazon for 29 gallon. Is this diffident for a 75 until power comes back on?
It's only a temporary solution until power comes back or until you get home to manually turn on a more powerful battery operated pump if needed. The beauty of this one is that it turns on by itself when power goes out.
I'm going to get this for my 75 Gallon chilid tanks
Great idea!
Is there any difference between the Silent Air B10 vs the B11?
Yes there is...I think one doesnt monitor the outlet power and only runs on battery when you turn it on....B-11 is the better one.
what about the biomedia in the canister? after a few hours it will start to die off because there is no oxygen in there
great point. That is something to be aware of. If you go too long without power you made need to keep an eye on your cycle. But keep in mind the the BB living on the surfaces in your tank will stay alive and they will quickly reproduce.
Can I use one for saltwater?
Absolutely!
Do I order two of them to manage my forty gallon tank
How long does it run for on battery?
Can’t tell you exactly but it’s very long, I’ve never ran it long enough to kill the batteries.
how many fish are there in your tank? Thank you!
I have about 30 in my 75G. Definitely over stocked so I do 2 water changes a week.
Hey Kev, do you still recommend this particular system?
Absolutely, Still use them today! 😊 You can find them in my shop - koji.to/kaveman_aquatics
Ok, thanks Kev! Do you think I need 2 for my 75?
KaveMan Aquatics I have 10 fish in a 180 gallon tank. I’m using the set up now but I’m not sure if the power goes out, that it will be enough oxygen.
B W It should be enough “temporarily”. It will buy you some time to get home from work, or wake up in the morning and notice that the power went out. Then you can use other methods to oxygenate the tank while waiting for power.
Maybe have a few more battery operated pumps on standby with brand new batteries. So when power fails and you hear this back up kick on then you can pull out your other battery operated ones and add more 👍
KaveMan Aquatics thanks man. I’ll do that
What the difference between B10 and B11 ? as I can only get B10 in my country thanks
I believe the B11 is the one that monitors your power for outages.
@@KaveManAquatics Could be , but on the packaging of the B10 it says " Goes on when your power goes off - automatically".
Do you have to overstock your African chichlid tank?
You dont have to, but there are many benefits to doing so, main one would be curbing aggression.
What about if you have a power cut for quite a while, is there anything that can back the heater up??
You wont have to worry about the heater too much. It will take very long to have significant change in temperature. Hopefully power returns well before the temp change effects the fish. The main concern is the oxygen.

Will the pump provide enough oxygen for the amount of fish in your tank if the power goes off for a period of 1-2 hours?
For 1-2 hours yes. It's just a temporary backup source until the power can come back or you can provide a more permanent source.
Will my 407 canister overflow my tank in a power outta 🤔
Nope! Its designed not to leak. Its sumps that can overflow in a power outage if not setup correctly.

If its attached to a sponge filter, and its off while theres power, then your sponge filter is just sitting there? Taking up space?
KaveMan Aquatics yea, it’s kind of ugly, but I do it during Hurricane season. So you feel an air stone would be more than enough ?
F D A sponge filter with no air going to it does nothing. Just attach to an air stone an tuck it in a corner. If it kicks on the air stone will provide just as much air as the sponge filter would. Your filters can remain off during a power outage, your main concern is just air.

I recently installed solar panels, but still feel insecure and I want to have plan B if electricity should go out for long.... thanks for your insight, and any recommendations are very well appreciated.
I understand your concern! Definitely need to be prepared living in a place with potential power outages. Have you considered buying a generator to supplement the solar panels? that would be a great plan B
@@KaveManAquatics Yes I also have a generator, butttttttttt with the hurricane the lines for gasoline were unbearable both my husband and I made lines for 7 hours just to get a limited amount of gas for the car and a portable tank.
