That's the best commentary i've listened to, on a fishing film. Truth be told, if you care to listen to vintage TV commentary on just about any subject, it's far more pleasurable than anything today, as the English language, both written and spoken has just about died.
Yes it's all "innit" and "yer nah wot I mean". Estuary English is just so horrible nothing like traditional cockney or Essex accents and if you're a received pronunciation speaker like myself or the narrator here people can be incredibly rude predjudiced and insulting and it's considered perfectly alright to do it.
..the famous lazy dance of your float as it is lifted out of the water before slowly being pulled down...that first strike when you think you're stuck on the bottom and the heart stopping feel of a thump sending shivers up your spine..ha ha.
Elderly gentleman who lives in the same street as me recently gave my son 2 of these reels in superb condition, along with some other sundry items. He insisted we use them because as he said " When ah bowt 'em they cost a fortune. Tha'll ne'er find owt better. What they use these days are nobbut toys" The gist being they cost him serious money new, anything we have now is a toy in comparison. Used them twice and took decent tench bream and roach as well as a superb perch. They work superbly and run smoothly. Suoerb engineering.
"A summer season without tench wouldn't be a summer season at all". How very true, but sadly, that is how it is for many anglers now. Hundreds of lovely old tench waters around the country have been spoiled by the over stocking of carp or F1 hybrids; mainly to please those undiscerning anglers with little imagination or interest in other species.
Agree totally. Or worse still...as in the case where i live, been filled in or ' landscaped.' Basic tackle and easy to follow techniques and advice. I picked up a fishing magazine in the summer after a long break, and some of the rigs and jargon wouldnt have looked out of place in NASA blueprints. Flip side i suppose is barbless hooks and knot free mesh for nets. Lovely video.
The groundbait he's throwing in is hitting the water so loud it's enough to wake the dead! he chucked in so much It's a miracle the Tench can see his bait, let alone pick it up! If this was today he'd be arrested for fly-tipping!
To be honest I think when they filmed this they didn't have the technology we have today and the underwater shots was really a fish tank or something and just edited I in and in some ways it's good things have progressed .the past is like a foreign land sometimes .
@@anglingmad Sorry, Steve, I was only joking :) Thanks for posting the videos...I loved Bernard Venables 'Mr. Crabtree' books when I was young, and this is the first time I have seen him on film. Brilliant.
You'd be well pissed off if you drew a peg next to old Fred, with all that groundbait and check out the noise of that reel 😂😂😂 Brilliant times when things seemed so easy 😍
Delightful.........lol.........love the underwater footage, has a 'real' quality, shot on film of course, always superior to digital. The recording of the reel makes it sound like a manic water bird!
Looked like a porcupine float and an Intrepid reel, maybe a Prince Regent or a Black Prince. Couldn't say what the rod was though. Nice peaceful fishing on a canal. No joggers, dog walkers or cyclists.
@@ivornappinion9406When i became 'serious' about my fishing in the seventies, Intrepids were the reels i bought. They're long gone, but i still have fond memories of those days.
Them old ratchets on reels were the bain of my life i used to fish with a mate who would be constantly casting and reeling in with that clicking ratchet all day ...... now its super loud bite alarms that get on my nerves ....... im not grumpy really lol
It is not the species that matter, it is the attitude that is all wrong. Catch as many as possible, the bigger the better, with the most efficient methods (akin to fish trapping really). Little respect for the beauty of the water or consideration for other anglers. Modern angling journalism (if you can call it that) merely encourages this attitude and just tries to appeal to the lowest common denominator to sell copies and products.
I remember reading an interview with Chris Yates back in the early 80's and when asked about his most memorable fish he described catching a carp in mid-double figures, not the carp that broke Walker's record. I hope there's a video on carp fishing in this series, I want to see someone use a par-boiled potato as bait.

Fishing humanity at it's finest man and nature at one . If you don't fish you'll never understand .
RIP Fred and Bernard. Wonderful films

THANK YOU SO MUCH, FOR BRINGING BACK WONDERFUL MEMORIES BY YOUR UPLOADING OF THESE TWO FILMS.
Using a Mitchell 300 if not mistaken. Ferrari of fishing reels back in the day

Bygone days. Traditional fishing. Simple enjoyment. None of this commercial rubbish.
lovely footage of a golden era when fishing was fun.
It still can be magical, if you search for quiet waters, just do your own thing and avoid the morons.
But we didn't catch much :)
Angling how it should be! splendid footage… Thanks!

Lovely video.
That tench came to the net like a wet sack. It was probably exhausted from eating three loaves of bread! 😂
Andrew Struth I’m surprised there was any water left in that river. The bread soaked it all up! 🤷🏻♂️
@Supernumerary Yarbles Fred would be a modern day carpie with a bait boat
carb crash!!
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

I often dream of returning to that "Foreign land", Steven...

Cannot believe how much float is showing in these old films lol
I still try to fish that way!
I remember fishing like this. Really great!!!
Beautiful olive colour & orange eyes ❤️ catching Tench
Thank you so much for this video, priceless.
Great video takes me back to when I started fishing. But hands up who thinks he over did it with the groundbait?
Haha, i was saying hang back with the feed Fred, or they'll become preoccupied
on that narrow swim!
Thought it was an action replay
Float was half-cock too
yup! but the groundbait made a great noise!!
It did yeah🤣

Really enjoyed the film was that an Intrepid Elite reel He was using? Sounded like one!
“A new worm, kept in moss so it’s fresh and lively”
🇬🇧✌️🤍
Looks a nice deep river for tench fishing.

Theme tune is great any idea who recorded it ?
Nice fish 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

split cane rod I would say looks like it was shot in the 60s
Definately an intrepid reel,i still have 2 :}

@@WillyEckaslike Great real. I have a 'Match' too.
I absolutely love fishing down on the somerset fens realy miss the southwest
Fishing is good in Yorkshire but you cant beat the southwest
Simon Clark I know this is 5 years old this comment but I moved to Somerset recently and I’m struggling on the Tench front
Dean Goldhawk cheddar res is well known as is the Taunton and Bridgwater canal
I think Freds day job is a baker

Remember those coffee grinder reels lol
The chap is using a fixed spool reel .. but the sound effect uses a center pin!! I guess thats how they did it in those days :) :)
That's what a Mitchell 300 sounds like with anti reverse on, well mine does anyway 😁
That constant throwing of groundbait really gets on my nerve. In the video about bream IT was the same, constat throwing in groundbait.
There really is nothing worse than someone constantly throwing in groundbait. Well except for paper cuts of course.
Terry Wilkinson
And finding coffee granules in the sugar. Christ, that’s a pisser!
Just the one nerve?
Sounds like paul whitehouse
They just dont make em like that these days
Fourteen again...
proper angling not like todays carpers thay will never get it proper angling
Agree 100%
I do both so i do get it
