My father and I met Bernard on the Hampshire Avon in the early 1970's. He took the time to set up my tackle for me, whilst pointing out a good spot to fish. What a gentleman & legend he was!
People several times mention the condition of the Roach. This was quite common in the sixties due to the old waxed/oiled yellow cotton "fin shredders" keep nets. At 3:42 you can see Bernard's specimen in the water.
Oh you missed him Peter, better luck next time. Of course it would help if you had my Match Aerial instead of an old pirn, and Trabucco Max Plus Bolo monofilament rather than 6x gut. Still, hard lines old bean and with a bit of luck you can catch roach with no scales like Bernard's!
This is one of a number of mid-1960's films called "Anglers' Corner" all presented by Bernard Venables. If you check out "Anglers' Corner" on here, there are a few more posted including Salmon, Grayling and Trout. Each one was for a different species.
@@mattiemclean9882 oh dear, why not trot back to your carp puddle and try and relax a bit. You never know it might help you stop getting triggered by two year old comments.
The new modern heroes of angling on here who think they are better fishing, on commercial fisheries, a blind man man with a stick could catch on them venues
2 observations...why does it look like he is pleasuring himself when reeling in? and did you notice that in all the underwater shots we did not see a single fish? Funny, I thought that's where they live.

I often got in to trouble as a young man with my primitive tackle and my worm .
lovely nostalgic film
I love it but I believe he's trotting for roach not stret pegging ?
Yes, I have always thought this also. He is dragging bottom but surely this is trotting.
Yep, stret pegging is presenting the bait well over depth, and holding the float back- usually used on flooded rivers where there's a slack area.
union310 - It was illegal not to smoke in those days.
He stretted his peg towards the end of the sesh a little. (Whilst he was fishing) lol.
@union310 He fancied a puff!
4.25. That loaf of bread would be called artisan these days

bernard venables is a legend.
Does anyone know why he doesn’t check/hold the float back in the current as you would nowadays?
A real Treat! Thank you!
And not a trout pellet or stew pond grown carp to be seen, proper fishing.
Yawn. I wish people could just enjoy these old films without comparing them to the modern day

"Well the hook is quite small...a size 12" Wow! I'd put a square of luncheon meat on that for a barbel!
I thought the same. Especially coupled with 2lb line!!
not all size hooks are the same size ..even today,,and they were finer not as thick as today ,,,,with carp and carp oh and carp,,
Beautiful part of the country Avon and Kennett now a days I fish Yorkshire rivers
Yes !beautiful and i love your country from Chiang mai Thailand
Such skill
Great tv series love the music at the beginning, any idea what it is?
Nothing kills bread fishing quite like nicotine.
Lol
Pipe down!😐
ivan marks would not agree ...
It's all about smoking a pipe and catching a few fish
its how the gentile folks fished back then not fishing a hole in the ground,,
Those roach in the fish tank look in terrible condition.

Nothing like a furious bat on your reel, a good draw on the old pipe, and a casual trott through a swim devoid of fish. Lol.
I'd imagine underwater cameras were only being dreamed about back then and the underwater shots are actually taken through the glass of a tank.
are you a know all bore ,this guy was an all rounder of his time ,well known and respected and a painter and book writer ,,and you are ///,
He got his center pin facing wrong way he always changing rod hands if ya right handed the reel faces left
Worse conditioned roach I've ever seen
Those rough old keep nets didnt do them much good
