THE RIVER TARRANT - WALKING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JACK HARGREAVES (4K)

- In this video, I follow in the footsteps of Jack Hargreaves with a walk along the entire route of the River Tarrant in Dorset.
In the early 1980's, TV presenter Jack Hargreaves made a delightful programme called “How a Dorset River Lost Its Name” as part of is TV series “Old Country”. In the video, Jack basically walked along the route of the River Tarrant, pointing out interesting aspects along the way with particular reference to the history of the area.
I though that it would be fun to retrace Jack's footsteps and see what had changed and indeed what had remained the same. As much of the route involved walking along a road with no footpath, I felt it best that my usual companion, Logan (the Whippet), remained at home.
My journey started at the source of the River Tarrant, just North of Tarrant Gunville. After exploring the village - the first of 8 villages or hamlets that I would pass through in the walk, all of which have the prefix of Tarrant - I headed South.
The whole route was about 8 miles long and for most of the time I was either right by, or very close to, the river. There were seven churches and two pubs - sadly in Jack's day there were a total of 4 pubs!
My journey ended just South of Tarrant Crawford, where the River Tarrant joins the River Stour.

I use a GOPRO HERO 7, 8 or 10 Black Action Camera (sometimes with a Gimbal) & a Rode microphone (either a “Shotgun” or a Rode Wireless Go) together with a Canon Powershot SX530 HS.

Nice video Dave. If I remember correctly Steve and Jack would have filmed possibly spring or summer of 1983. Interesting how the flow of the river seems to have changed since then. I would have edited the video a few weeks after it was shot for broadcast later in the year. I find preparing them now for putting up on UA-cam fascinating as I have forgotten so much of the stories Jack told. You now have added more by showing us how the river and the Tarrants have changed since Jacks days, so thank you and have a great Christmas.

It is a pretty part of the county around there, David. What a lovely area to grow up in.
Hi sir just happened on your video , because of my interest in Jack . And at the age of 71 i well remember his programs and of course those days long gone . What is interesting is the state of much of the river, compared to when Jack was filming . This was not unusual for the time because back then they knew it was important to maintain these waterways, because they would prevent flooding . Fast forward to today where very little of such maintenance is taken place , which no doubt jack would be saddened by . Kind regards to your good self 👍

Enjoyed that immensely Dave. A few photos at Tarrant Monkton began my own mini-series following in Jack's footsteps, This one has filled in many answers to questions raised on my travels down the valley. I had a good chat with the landlady at the Langton Arms. What nice person, and well done to her, and the community, for the hard work in recovering from the fire. Jack was an early hero of mine, so I've enjoyed watching Dave Knowles' videos.

Jack's Tarrant walk has been on my to-do list ever since Facebook acquaintance mentioned his name and his TV series 2 or 3 year ago. I've watched them all several times and your video has reminded me that if I don't get on and do the walk soon I'm going to be too old and decrepit. My dog Magnus has already got past long walks so it will be on my own (not the same as you mentioned). Thanks for the nudge!

A lovely walk, both a physical one and a meander down memory lane. If I say I knew Jack Hargreaves I’m stretching the truth slightly but I did meet him on a number of occasions. As a teenager in Southampton in the 1970s I had a school friend whose father was friendly with Jack. At that time Jack was not only a television presenter but, I think, had a financial interest in Southern Television which was based in Southampton. He was an absolute fund of information and a real storyteller. Coincidentally my friend’s dad had been in the same Army film unit during the war as the late Alan Wicker.

That was a really nice video and I hope you enjoyed your walk as much as I did watching it. I've watched a few of Jack's programmes and I so wish those days were here once more, a much more peaceful way of life with less materialism. I was only young when he filmed so wouldn't of knew much about real history and skills from the past. Very informative and calm narration throughout, so hats off to you sir and thankyou for the upload. 🎩

The Crown at Tarrant Hinton was in fact on the same side that you were standing Dave, I remember turning in to the road passed The Crown and when visiting my father from 1980 on. I think it must have been demolished and replaced by those houses which were on the opposite side of the road to where you where indicating maybe late 80’s early 90’s - I’m not certain. And that exit onto the A354 from Tarrant Hinton was diverted across what was the pub forecourt area.
Great video, like all yours, enhanced by your manner and the gentle soundtrack. I now live in the area, since 2018, and have discovered many of the areas you walk though my walks are generally shorter. I have also watched many of Jack’s videos and visited his locations - a great countryman and orator.
There is a walk near Tarrant Rushton, around what was RAF Rushton Airfield which has a huge WWII significance being one of the airfields from which the airborne invasion was launched including the assault on Pegasus Bridge right at the outset. The airfield has figured greatly recently because of its role in the 80th anniversary of the invasion.

Must've been strange walking and filming without your sidekick Dave, but at least you got to snaffle all the Piper's! Obviously Keyneston didn't get the memo about naming the church, so they called it All Saints just to cover all eventualities. Beautiful video but we missed Logan as much as you did, I think! My sister married a Tarrant surname, whose father emigrated to Canada after WWII... I wonder if there are many Tarrants around the River Tarrant? If not, 'twas an interesting coincidence. Thank you for all your walks and research bringing us the goodness of England.

Brilliant video Dave ! I'm guessing that the river when looking rather dry flows deeper underground (even so you do see greenery in the river channel ) and then rises at points to the surface and visible ? Jack was an amazing person not just with his passion for rural life but his depth of knowledge of rural life / history, buildings etc. Your video shows the amazing beauty of the area plus great informative info also !

Everything about this video was a real joy. From the beginning to where we saw how all the 8 villages take on the appellation of Tarrant in their names. I really enjoyed the stills from JH's films to accompany some of your locations, I've sometimes made 'pilgrimages' in the footsteps of artists I admire and always derived great pleasure to find myself in the same space as them. There were so many stunning views of villages it made one proud of one's heritage. Beautifully filmed and edited, Dave. Thank you.

Jack made an episode about old Manor Houses in Dorset and he visited 6 of them. I thought it would be interesting to go back, 40+ years later, and make a similar "then & now" comparison.

Hi David , I wondered if that's where the producers got the name for the village of Tarrent !! In the TV series of Howards Way produced in 1985 filmed around the South coast with the boat yard at Bursledon used for boat building also the pub the Jolly sailor brilliant location !!

What a lovely walk Dave. One of Jacks walks popped up in my feed via the Dave Knowles Film Maker channel some months ago and I’ve been watching more as used to watch Out Of Town etc back in the day. I think I sat on that exact same bench at the True Lovers Knot pub with a pint awhile back 👍🏻

Thank you for making this video Dave, it brought back memories of when I used to live in Stubhampton. The river really does get going in the winter months and the road through Gunville and Hinton often floods. Springs burst up through the ground after prolonged heavy rainfall. I remember one year a couple burst up through the road, you could see the holes in the tarmac when the flood went down, and one burst through in someone’s living room!

Brilliant!! Very fond of Jack since watching him in my childhood. Saw the episode you reference, and indeed from Dave Knowles UA-cam videos I purchase a boxed set of the original series :-) Havnt walked the Tarrants, but have rode through many many times on motorcycle, and always wave at the little mill "Shed" . Well done Dave. You really should have been leading a pony as Jack used to do. Or better still on a pony and trap. We always watch a Dave Knowles film when they appear. The opening music is enchanting. It's strange where water goes! Further up stream, the river course was badly in need of cleaning out. Almost certain to flood because of that amout of weed.
There's a similar situation at Cholderton, near me. The water runs down the valley from up by Collingbourne Kingston and south through Tidworth. Now I've seen a good flow of water to a point just short of Cholderton... then nothing at all in the village. It reappears a little further on through several villages before joining the Avon in Salisbury. I've seen Cholderton in flood on a couple of winters in the early 21st century and we've had enough rainfall this past year to flood again. We shall see!!! If you read 'Harold Last of the Saxon Kings' by Bulwell Lytton. He mentions that Edith Swans neck, Harold''s common law wife identified his body by a love knot tattoo on his body after Hastings.

In the 1940's my father used to park his car in the Monkton watersplash to rinse the mud off - we all used to get out in our gumboots and stand in the water and splash away - not considered antisocial in those far off days

Loved the Logan resting at home shot near the beginning! What an interesting meander along the course of the Tarrant. It seemed a lot of the buildings were a mix of brick and flint. Any idea why so many of the churches had the same dedication?

Nice video. Did you notice the chemtrails sprayed above your head? The nice blue sky gets hazier and hazier as the vid goes on.
Hello Dave, I had a funny feeling that you would be sitting with Logan in a pub at the end of this video as your wife would have brought him there! But no, what a disappointment.
He actually did come to meet me at the finish (with Mrs F) at The Shack in Spetisbury (so he did get his crisps after all!) but I had packed all my camera gear away. I nearly did unpack it all to film an "end scene" with him - perhaps I should have!
