John Wilson 'Hooray for Hollywood' Overture
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 чер 2017
- John Wilson's annual visits to the Proms in London's Royal Albert Hall featured a tribute in his 2011 programme to the great movie musicals of the past. The concert included many popular show-tunes and began with a sparkling overture of John Wilson's own devising - a sequence of hit numbers that commenced with George Gershwin's "Swanee," a song forever associated with Al Jolson. The 'Hooray for Hollywood' Overture kick-started a concert superbly played, as ever, by a top-flight orchestra of hand-picked musicians.
In response to a comment down below, here is the complete sequence of tunes: (a) George Gershwin "Swanee"; (b) Harry Warren "Lullaby of Broadway"; (c) Rudolf Friml "Indian Love Call"; (d) Jerome Kern "Can't Help Singing"; (e) Jerome Kern "Long Ago and Far Away"; (f) Frank Loesser "Guys and Dolls"; (g) Sherman Brothers "Chim Chim Cheree"; (h) Richard Whiting "Hooray for Hollywood". The announcer refers to Johnny Mercer but he wrote the lyrics for that last song, not the music.
Truly does not get any better than this orchestra!!!!!!!
I am 70 YO and John Wilson's music makes me feel like a kid again. We still had a theatre that played the big musicals. I am doubly blessed.
FANTASTIC! The wonderful John Wilson Orchestra is the GREATEST!
John Wilson is giving us History the Man should be Knighted That Orchestra is the World Best Cheers and Thank From America Les
I realize it's kind of randomly asking but do anyone know of a good place to stream new movies online?
A rare and wonderful opportunity to hear these melodies played by a large orchestra made up of musicians who know how they should be played. No ordinary symphony orchestra could ever sound like this.
What a privilege to hear this music played by a huge orchestra.
The Golden Age of Hollywood and the great musical and operettas sung by legendary movie stars, glad that there is a movement to preserve this all but forgotten music among newer generations...maybe they will discover the music sooner than later.
Perfection, as always. John Wilson (the man is a musical genius) and his superb orchestra have done for music what JK Rowling did for reading.
These British proms are wonderful. Oh, that we should have such a annual program as these.
Ó
God I love this style of music. Classic Hollywood style orchestral music, so satisfying and pleasing to listen to
The best British orchestra, probably in the World for playing Hollywood musical themes. Also, remember John Wilson reconstructed the musical pages that were destroyed in the past by listening and rewriting. He is a genius.
John Wilson is a fabulously gifted conductor!!!!!
Wow ! What a fantastic Orchestra and an inspired Conductor !
Forgot how awesomely wonderful listening to an orchestra can be. Made my day.
The Indian Lovecall is played so, so beautiful...😢
'synchronous' has to describe the fluidity and time-coherence of these musicians! Each section is as one, to an impeccable degree!
I’m so delighted to hear them playing Indian love call from the movie Rosemarie. That movie starred Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy, two of the most incredible singers who have ever graced the movie screen! It almost brings me to tears because my grandma and I loved Jeanette and Nelson movies and to hear their music being shared and played for modern day audiences is so touching to my heart!
When I get out of bed in the morning feeling suicidal, this restores my will to live,
Would love to see John Wilson and his orchestra live
Me too!

@@royblekman8186 ... It is very good, as you say, but it's a pity about the incorrect, far too small screen ratio. I think I'd better put it on my channel in the right size!

Me agradó mucho su opinión sobre John Wilson y su extraordinaria orquesta y coros. Comparto todos sus puntos de vista. John transmite ese entusiasmo a sus músicos y a su público. ¡Qué ovaciones, no usuales entre el público inglés!

John, bring the gang to The Peace Center in Greenville, SC, so we can share you and your orchestra’s expertise!
Very well done! Such a classic sound reproduced in a great arrangement.
I really enjoy listening to these wonderful arrangements and performances. The contactor chooses some great source material and they all do an excellent job!
We can see two fantastic, professional, well trained and joyful orchestra: the JWO and the BBC. Fantastic the sound, absolut in time the camera picture changings, cleary followable the story of the music, the main thema lines in the orchestra. As interpretaton and as television interpretation absolut super. All time big joy to watch again and again this quality, because this quality make me nt only joy, when I see, but make big remarks: in my life, or in my job also like to touch this spiritual coherency and professional, really pleasureful lewel of human production. Thx for sharing and for uploading, must trawel London and to buy these concerts in original dvd, I think. :-)
FANTASTIC CONDUCTOR AND FANTASTIC MUSICIANSHIP AND FINALLY FANTASTIC VIDEO SHOTS PERFECTLY TIMED TO EACH SECTION !
Right on masefu0...great music like this will survive, unlike the rap cr*p and hip hop sh* that passes as music today.
Fantástica maravillosa escuchar es un privilegio esta orquesta envidio a quienes la eschan en vivo felicitaciones
Amazing
John Wilson. Gorgeous.❤️
This presentation is spectacular, but what I like the most is the part with the Jerome Kern song
Beautiful When music was music and not just noise.
MadDiMoody7 and when music had some class and made you humm the tune as you were leaving the theatre and picture show
fabulous "Long ago & Far Away"
Great!!!!!!
Massive effort and production value, never heard John Wilson on the radio here in the U.K. ? WTF.

Que música tan bella!
Wish those arrangements were available in the States!
They have cd's available.
Good....Good...Jose...Ambos
Commencing 3:10 -- Now THIS, my friends, is really well-written countermelody!
Is that Bella Noche from Lady and The Tramp?
@@vitogeraci7146 It's not Bella Notte (which is from that lovely spaghetti dinner scene, one of the most romantic scenes in movie history) ... to me it sounds like that bit "When I'm Calling You" (Indian Love Call) that was made famous in cinema by Nelson Eddy & Jeanette MacDonald. Hope I spelled their names correctly.
Great to hear real music. You can keep your rap cr*p.
💓
❤️💕❤️💕❤️
🙏
"Long ago & far away" thanks to Jerome Kern, Rita Hayworth, Gene Kelly, who gifted us this song, it's so pretty and sweet
Nice, UA-cam, how you put a commercial right in the middle of an orchestra piece. If this is "smart" artificial intelligence, let's pray you're never in charge of anything sensitive like missiles.
Amen, Brother!!
You're so right. These interrupting ads are so counter-productive that I wouldn't be surprised if they back-fire completely and result in no sales at all in whatever it is they are advertising.
En español quiero saber como se llama el tema
Does anyone know the name of the beautiful piece of music at minute 1:17?
It''s "Lullaby of Broadway" ... Here's part of the dance sequence in "Gold Diggers of 1935" ...

Hi and Congrats! May I ask What's the Waltz begining on time 3'53? Would really love to know. Thanks! :D Andrés.
"Can't help singing". Deanna Durbin hit.
Thank you so much. Should know how happy you made me feel. Cheers & I owe you one!
Very underrated movie. Deanna's only Technicolor film, a nifty Kern-Harburg score and lots of breathtaking outdoor location shooting that would not be seen in musicals for another ten years.
Is this concert available on DVD?
The whole concert has been released on the 'Premiere Opera' label: Catalogue No. DVD 10323 'Proms: Hooray for Hollywood.'
adam28xx thank you, have ordered
Can't identify most of the tunes though they are recognizable to me.
The medley consists of (a) George Gershwin "Swanee"; (b) Harry Warren "Lullaby of Broadway"; (c) Rudolf Friml "Indian Love Call"; (d) Jerome Kern "Can't Help Singing"; (e) Jerome Kern "Long Ago and Far Away"; (f) Frank Loesser "Guys and Dolls"; (g) Sherman Brothers "Chim Chim Cheree"; (h) Richard Whiting "Hooray for Hollywood". The announcer refers to Johnny Mercer but he wrote the lyrics for that last song, not the music.
Thank you!
Thanks adam to post this and many others great videos......
