- Replacing the TSS (transmission speed sensor) on an 08 ford taurus. This should cover many vehicles with the same trans. This is the AWD model. If your car has this trans please comment so I can add the vehicle to the tags and description. I also cover how to do a drain and fill.
Thank you so much!!! Because of your video, my boyfriend and I realized autozone sold us the input and we need the output.
Glad to help autozone can be wrong a lot. But get a Ford one this is a lot of work either way ans the autozone ones don’t hold up so well
torque specs according to prodemand are 12 Nm (106 lb-in) on all the small bolts after you are done with the clutches and gears. the sequence is impossible to describe but roughly a cross pattern starting from the bolt closest to the center of the part being installed and ending at the farthest bolt from the center
and the four bolts that are different lengths are tightened in order from shortest to longest
hey my name is nick my 08 Taurus from time to time when I stop the transmission acts as if its stuck in 3rd gear will the input sensor that this video shows u changing fix that or do u think the valve body needs opened up and output sensor needs changed
it will shift hard when this happens I have to shut the car off for a min and then its fine
Thanks for the video. I have an 08 Taurus X wagon with AWD. We love the car and it runs and drives great but after a couple hours of driving, the speedometer will (sometimes) start jumping up and down randomly about 10 mph. When this happens, the transmission will start jerking and if pulling a long uphill grade, will suddenly jump down to about 2nd gear, thus making it seem to have come out of gear and I have to let off the gas to get it to shift back up and provide power at speed again. I can turn the engine off and back on again and then it seems to correct itself, sometimes for the rest of the trip and sometimes just for another half hour or so. Does this sound like the sensor you replaced? As far as I know I'm not getting any codes but I will recheck. This also makes using cruise control impossible with the speed jumping up and down all the time.
dab1068 that’s not typical of this sensor. It should pull a code but most cheaper scanners won’t pull a trans code on these
Sounds like the throttle positioning sensor
@@RR-yi5ju How, exactly, would the TPS affect the speedometer bouncing around?
@@dab1068 tps reads the gas pedal. An when going out makes the speedometer go crazy an short out. Causing the whole gage cluster to eventually go out.
Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I have an 08 Mercury Sable that is doing the exact same thing. Seems to act up more in the heat.
I have an 08 sable that has been "bucking" at highway speeds, had the output sensor replaced as that was the only code coming back...it still is bucking a few days later ...how many test miles did you put on in order to reset?
crazywhiteboyjay disconnect the battery for 30 min to an hour. Then reconnect and the problem should be gone. Then one drive cycle the car should be back to normal. A drive cycle is 30 highway and 30 min back roads
Approximately how long did this take from start to finish?
When I did it the second time and de pinned it about an hour
Any tips on feeding the sensor through the transmission when you’re removing it? I’ve disconnected the sensor but it always gets stuck as I’m trying to pull it out.
James Woods if you remove the connector it’s much easier. Due to tolerances etc it may not come out with the connector on it it’s that tight
Would it be an option just to have left the dipstick tube on cover after removing bolts? Looks like it would make a nice handle to reposition when putting cover back on. Thanks for posting!
It would but the tube gets in the way a good bit maneuvering things out so it was easier that way.
I pushed a wire from the front . It went straight down through the hole for the sensor. I then cut the sensor cord/wires and pulled it out with no problem. I kept trying to get the plug to go through there and would not go took 2 seconds to do it the other way. I wish I would have done it that way in the first place.
Do you happen to remembr the symptoms of what caused it? Mine is due for the transmission oil change, I can feel it shift through the gears occasionally and just today, the wrench light came on, the odometer zeroed out, and my speedometer sat at 0. I lucked out and was by a gas station. It seemed to have been sitting in 2nd gear, when it should have been in first. (I was at a stop when it all happened). When I shut the car off, and turned it on, it wouldn't want to go in gear, and when it started, I could hear a single click coming from the engine/transmission area. It drove funny, in a higher gear until it realized it should be in first while leaving the gas station.
Does any of this sound like what Happened with you? I wasn't sure if it was a bad speed sensor, or what.
Trentyn Waring it’s similar. My case it went into limp mode the check engine light came on speedo stopped and it would go but it felt like the converter was slipping really bad 15 mph at redline
Peterson auto I've driven it since, haven't had any issues, I know it's due though. I'll give it a shot changing the fluids and sensors. Thanks man!
Trentyn Waring the speedo going to 0 is a tell tale issue. It can come and go or just die all of a sudden.
Trentyn Waring yeah I have a 2008 mercury sable, and at about 120k miles mine had this exact issue. The speedometer wouldn’t work, it was just stuck in one gear and wouldn’t shift would just keep revving and barely moving, all the lights come on. I brought it my mechanic and it was the output speed sensor, he changed it and it’s worked perfect since, just hit 200k miles on it last week no problems
Mines is leaking from the cover ?? What do i need to do ??
The trans pan? New gasket and clean it really well it should be what you need
Is the long one input or output sensor??
Question on this car in the back of the motor there is a hose that has a t shape that connects to the fire wall and down ward and coming back to were you are fixing it. Mine is leaking water and it busted off of the t shape. I'm trying to find out what is the hose name or what kind of part it's. Been trying to fix mine up but no one can tell me the name with out seeing it but if i run it it starts smoking. Is there anyway you can possibly help with the name of the part?
Sorry nvm mind it's a ford taurus x 2008 sorry.
The Taurus x is very similar. What you are talking about is most likely a heater hose connection. I would go to the dealer or fordparts.com and see what you can find. They have diagrams where they can look things up
Could you cut and splice the wires instead of pulling the pan? I have an opportunity to buy one of these cheap, just wondering.
921aa I would say no because it would need soldered and the resistance is key here
Looking at a picture of the sensor it seems to have 3 wires. Crimp connectors are a very reliable way to professionally splice wires. It would actually be tighter connection than what it would be at the plug on the end of the sensor. It amazes me that the plug is covered with oil or looks to be.
921aa crimp connectors will not work as I said earlier any change of resistance will affect the sensor. Also there is little to no room for this to be done and finally yes the wires are in the trans where tranny fluid resides so they are wet and most but connectors even heat shrink will not hold up in the fluid so solder is the only way if you insist on doing it that way
Everytime i stop the car seems to go in neutral I have to reset the car before the trans start acting right what do you think it is
mustard mosthateddvd what code are you pulling?
Peterson auto no codes at all the transmission just slips and when you turn the key off for 4 second it reengages reverse forward works and everything but everytime it stops it does the same thing my guy at auto zone said it could be the transmission control module
idk about cars, but does anyone know if the steps would be the same for the SEL model?
If it’s awd it should be same process
so the one you changed was the... output or input speed sensor? cuz looking up on the auto parts you said the input sensor was the output sensor.
It is the input shaft speed sensor that I changed
Peterson auto Thank you, I just wanted to confirm. For I am changing the output sensor. Great video, thanks for the help!
If you can find the specs on the valve body torque please post them up.
was it shifting hard throughout all of the gears or just the first few? i have the same car and im getting harsh shifts throught the first 3 or 4 gears.
Peterson auto so do you think replacing the same sensor in the video will work for my car? oe does the other sensor play a bigger role in the first few gears.
No joke. Where you at? Want to do another one? How much?
Kevin R I’m in pa.
@@Petersonauto Yeah, I found you. Im in SC. A bit too far. You video scared me off one mechanic already. I want both sensors changed and I want a mechanics who has done at least one or 2. Might have to go to a Ford Dealer.
Kevin R ya that’s what I would recommend the dealer knows how to do it and will do it correctly.
Hello sir! I hope you are doing well! I too have the same code p0715 for my 2008 Ford taurus AWD with 153k miles it's giving mileage of 16.4 miles a gallon combined and air bag light is also came on. How much the cost would be for speed sensor and should I fix this problem asap or can I do later sometime? Please reply me thanks in advance
Katipally Niyanth reddy cost will vary from dealer to dealer. If it is also having a lack of get up and go issue replace the sensor before you drive it anymore.
Peterson auto thanks for your quick response sir!
What if no codes come up but the transmission is is going crazy when i say crazy i mean it well rev real high then jurk real hard then it gears up but when i come to a stop it just revs doesn't move at all but when i turn the car off then back on after about 5 mins it acts normal for lil bit then it starts doing it again if anyone can help me plz and thank you
dashawn anthony t could be this sensor but I would have it scanned my a mechanic
I did no codes came up
dashawn anthony a professional level scanner will show live data and the mechanic can watch it as you drive to find the issue.
Thanks
Quick question. My speedometer is 10 mph slow and the rpms are reading off. Below zero at idle. Can you think of anything it could be.
Andrew Lambert the speedometer could be a different tire size or a wheel speed sensor but it should pull a code if it's a sensor. The tach would be cam or crank sensor as the first guess.
Peterson auto hey, I have 99 mercury sable ohv it want go forward nor backward is this part I need. Please help me. I have replace tranmission once bout a year ago. Thanks
Tommy Caldwell that is most likely a fluid issue if it will not go at all. Check the level and then look for burnt fluid. If recently rebuilt and miles are under 10k I would guess a problem with the rebuild. Also make sure the shift linkage is putting the trans in gear and has not fallen off.
Peterson auto Thanks. Could it be a vehicle control Sensor. I had put on a machine. I no its electrical. I don't no which part tho
Tommy Caldwell What code did it pull? That's the place to start a sensor will pull a code
How long does this take to do exactly?
Snow Plays how long does it take to cook dinner? That's a loaded question as I mentioned it's hard to fish the connector through. I had a good 30 minutes just figuring out to cut off the locating tab. The second time I did it took about an hour though. However I would plan all day and you may need to depin the connector if your clearances are smaller than mine. I depinned it the second time
Often! This transition jave problems ford taurus
I think your trying to say the translator has as many problems as the Taurus
This car is giving me hell, I have replaced pretty much everything on it and am still receiving the same codes... intake manifold gaskets (which I just changed by the way) and and the oil temperature sensor (or whatever) still acting like its running hot, steam coming from the coolant reservoir after only a short drive and I also changed the thermostat all the injectors, spark plugs and coils the MAF sensor 02 sensor just everything to no avail... does anyone have any advice besides throwing the whole car away? I bought this car for my sons graduation 3 years ago and it is a money pit has has yet to even enjoy...I feel so bad!
Melanin Setapart If new sensors did not fix the issue I would assume wiring or ecu a good shop with on demand for diagnostic should be able to pinpoint the issue quickly do not let ships just throw parts at it guessing
Peterson auto thanks... I have also had the ecu replaced and sent it back for the company to recheck it and it was tested again on 2 other cars and it was fine... everything under the hood is brand new so maybe it's the wire...I'm going to look around for a shop then thanks
Melanin Setapart I would also suggest checking for a blown head gasket without seeing the car it’s hard to say
Why not just splice the wires for the connector to feed through the hole. Then solder and reattach the wire with heat-shrink and whatnot afterwards. That's what I would do. Much easier.
Horsepower House due to adding more resistance in the wires this is not ideal
As much as I hate to - some jobs are better left to a Shop to handle. This is one of them.... :/
Horsepower House yes it is plus connector is quite fragile too
Hey next time just cut the wire on the old one and wire the new one in wit some wire connectors
I am in Rock Hill. How much for you to do this for me? I would bring the car to you.
I’m willing to bet the tow alone would cost more than its worth
@@Petersonauto the car is still drivable, plus if it wasn't I have a trailer
@@benscovil I’m in pa what state u in
My fault I thought I saw a thing where you said you were in South Carolina
@@Petersonauto hi I live in maryland and i have a 08 taurus x fwd. how much would you charge for this?
hi I live in maryland and i have a 08 taurus x fwd. how much would you charge for this? also if you have instagram for messaging lmk. my instagram is @matt_finta
Did you get this fixed?
So where is the output speed sensor!
jd spell The one I didn’t cover is internal in the trans behind the valve body at the time of the video torque spec was not available readily for the internal trans components that need removed so I do not recommend doing the other one on your own.
Peterson auto uh oh. I took all that shot apart and replaced both bit cannot get it back together now hahaha, any diagrams you can point me towards?
jd spell unfortunately not. It’s a secrete. Joint venture with chevy means at least ten years before its openly public. I would ask the dealer ya may be able to get them to print something.
