It makes me happy to see Sugafoot raise his arms at the end of the song in acknowledgment of how great they sounded. The background vocals of Chet Willis were phenomenal. Sugafoot was never given nearly his due.

48 years ago today (2022) on April 23, 1974: The Ohio Players release their first #1 album.
One of the funkiest groups in the funkiest decade, the Ohio Players became the template for a generation of Midwest jamming groups. And on this day (April 23) in 1974, the group finally hit big time pay dirt, releasing their signature album and their first #1 disc, the iconic Skin Tight.

This is NOT ABOUT Paul Schaefer and his band. For Pete sake, give the Ohio Players and one of their biggest hits THE RESPECT THEY DESERVE. You white people always want everything. This is all about the Great Ohio Players and NOT Paul Schaefer

    • @MrCarltonjsmith
      @MrCarltonjsmith 2 роки тому

@@URSTUCK-ut4fs Yeah man but Paul's boys held it down like a motherphucker. BY this time there was nothing left of the Ohio Players - only two original members Sugarfoot on guitar (and he is BARELY playing his guitar)and James Diamond on TIMBALES, not even drums. Without Pauls band there is no telling what this would have sounded like. It ain't about White or Black man (although I know what you mean) in this case it's just about music.

Whoever mentioned that Will Lee couldnt hang on bass has no idea what he's talkin bout here. Will nails this to a tee and add's his own flavor and embellishments. His whole angle for over the 30 years I've seen him has been R&B so he was perfect for to back Sugarfoot and crew.

Happy Birthday to.......Leroy Roosevelt "Sugarfoot" Bonner (March 14,
    1943 - January 26, 2013) was a musician, vocalist, and producer.
    Born
in Hamilton, Ohio, about 20 miles (32 km) north of Cincinnati in 1943,
Bonner grew up poor, the oldest of 14 children. He ran away from home at
14, and eventually wound up in Dayton, where he connected with the
musicians who would form the Ohio Players. The band's lineup changed
over the years, but its instrumentation and sound remained basically the
same: a solid, driving groove provided by guitar, keyboards, bass and
drums, punctuated by staccato blasts from a horn section.
    Assisted by
Roger Troutman and his Zapp brethren, Sugarfoot went solo in 1985 with
Sugar Kiss-the same year Zapp released The New Zapp IV U (featuring
"Computer Love"), while Shirley Murdock was on the verge of scoring with
the Troutman-produced "As We Lay".Vocals were a secondary
consideration. "We were players," Bonner told The Dayton Daily News in
2003. "We weren't trying to be lead singers." The core members of the
band did not originally sing, he explained, but "we got so tired of
having singers leave us that we decided we'd just do the singing
ourselves. I used to play with my back to the audience in the old days,”
he added. "I didn't want to see them because they were distracting.
Then the first time I turned around and opened my mouth, we had a hit
record with Skin Tight. That's amazing to me."
