    This was an exact replacement for the old one that lasted about 10 years. ua-cam.com/users/postUgkx7yWIKcrbA9KMHkGSfcgxW2lsjHT6B8Sh The top of my mitigation tube by my roofline was just a 90 elbow which allowed too much debris to fall down into the fan, eventually ruining it. Without this issue, I bet it would have kept running another 10 years. When I replaced this fan, I added an extra elbow joint so the top tube now it does a 180, which should solve that problem. The radon guys around here wanted to charge me a $300 diagnostic fee, then parts/labor (probably close to $600 total). I installed this all by myself in about an hour for the cost of the fan; it would probably be even easier/faster with two people. FYI the manufacturer's warranty greatly differs depending on whether you install it yourself (1 yr warranty) or have a licensed installer do it (10 yrs).

  • @stevewaclo167
    @stevewaclo167 4 роки тому +5

    Hmmm, never knew about deteriorated dip tubes. Thanks for that! I’ll check with my manufacturer to see what I have.
    My tank dates from ‘03, has the ball valve drain you wisely suggest and, since I don’t have a convenient hose bib out front, the system is flushed every time I wash the car. I also have a pressure washer I use off the water heater and installed an in-line filter to protect the PW’s delicate innards.
    Anode (what was left) was replaced last year (pneumatic impact wrench!) and I believe I’ll put that on a regular schedule (3 years? They are not expensive).
    Another issue with accumulated debris on tank bottom is the insulating effect of the material. As you observed, efficiency drops as precipitate accumulates and heat that should be going into the water instead causes the bottom of the tank to rapidly oxidize, with ultimate failure not too far ahead. This condition can become so serious that bubbles of water vapor form in the debris and their release causes a popping sound when the heater is firing. A bad sign 😰.
    Thanks again!

    Question here please. My 50 gallon tank has 8 year warranty, I'm on the 9th year. I've never drained it until now. I agitated the bottom many times and finally got the tank to run clear. Problem is inside hot water is still off colour. I live in Vancouver, BC for location. Every plumber says I need a new tank. Is there more I can do?

    I flushed my water heater last year in June. Going to do it again this June.
    It's my first house, and haven't lived here long.
    When I flushed, the water very dark brown from the rust. Took awhile, but it finally started flowing clear. I'm sure the previous homeowner never flushed it.
    The water heater still heats water fine and gives us good supply. But since there was all that brown rust water, should I start looking at replacing the water heater?

    I had to open the Pressure Relief Valve for tank to empty; opening a single hot water faucet created no flow. After doing some research, tank will not drain unless opened, hot water faucet is higher than the top of the water heater.

    Ron, instead of opening a hot water tap on a higher floor, why not just open the relief valve on the tank? I live in Texas where (believe it or not) builders put water heaters in the attic (there are no taps on a higher level).

    • @Pro1er
      @Pro1er 3 роки тому

      You can open a hot water tap anywhere, you just want to break the vacuum. If you fuss with the pressure relief valve I would suggest having a replacement on hand because sometimes an accumulation of sediment around the valve or a problem with the seal won't allow it to close completely and it may need to be replaced.

    I had a Bradford White water heater installed in 2011. I had not ever drained it in fear I would mess something up.
    I took on the project 10.08.19 and it was easy.
    I’m glad I drained it but there wasn’t anything to speak of in the bucket.
    We live in Dallas, TX. Could it be possible I need to check something else?

    I have a good quality Pura prefilter for all water coming into our home. If I change out that filter once a year, won't that cut down
    on having to flush my tank? Meaning....won't that filter pick up most of the crud like I see coming out of yours (you had alot of big chunks inside there)? Every time I change my filter I find very little anything stuck in the filter itself. Just wondering what you think....

    • @MrCigarsandCoffee
      @MrCigarsandCoffee 6 років тому

      Jeffrey, the best option actually would be to open the pressure relief valve to break the vacuum. I would use that over an open faucet anyway, so you can test its effectiveness. If that goes bad, your water heater can explode. Cheers!

      You just want a hot water faucet or two open when you turn water back on, and once everything is functioning and water supply valves are open, then you can turn the taps back off like normal. It’s a pressure thing, it can be hard on them if you don’t.

  • @WannaBeHocker

  • @AiBilly

    • @lepke1979
      @lepke1979 6 років тому

      You turn the hot water side of the faucet on to help with draining (air in line). You can close it when the tank is done draining or possibly when you're done flushing altogether.

    • @mercoid
      @mercoid 4 роки тому

      lepke1979 .....yes. Your response is correct and I believe it is what the man in the video intended to communicate. However the video editing regarding illustration of this point is indeed, incorrect and therefore confusing.

    Was flushing without turning water supply off twice a year and no sediment was coming. Tried with turning off water supply after switched knob to pilot, let water flow from a hot water tap that above water heater and flushed, still no sediments, just few particles. Am I doing something wrong or my water heater (Rheem with glass interior) is an exception :) My furnace humidifier (old drum style) building some particles over time so I assume water is not pure. I have not touched to anode bar as well. Any insight?

    • @misskim2058
      @misskim2058 5 років тому

      I wouldn’t. I keep a wide berth from the furnace and water heaters. If the water to it is ever off (and your city could do it in an emergency or while working on it nearby and not tell you) and the heater itself is still on, it gets extremely hot at the top very fast. You can sear your skin on it like a branding iron so... not advisable.

    Can I leave water heater on when flushing tank?

    • @randyblackburn9765
      @randyblackburn9765 6 років тому +2

      WMT MAN Power no , open hot water faucet in house and purge air before turning back on . You actually may have to leave water on at first to blow sediment out of drain faucet . some plastic drain valves may stop up with sediment and not drain at all , what's worse is they may drip and not cut off and what is worse plastic drain valve may twist off in tank if you try to change it out . Then you will have water running out of WH . I am in middle Tennessee and find very little sediment in gas WHs but a lot of sediment in electric WHs.

    • @kenlgraham
      @kenlgraham 5 років тому +1

      A flush is just to remove sediment, if you had no hot water, if electric either the breaker has been tripped or the heating element(s) are burned out. If Natural Gas, likely the Thermocouple has quit working. This acts as a safety allowing your pilot light to stay lit. When the thermocouple which is being heated by pilot light quits working the pilot light goes out and the gas valve won't open , no flame , no heat.

    I was just told by 2 plumbers in Memphis ; you do not need to drain the water heater. These guys charge $180.00 for a few minutes job, cleaning the vent as it was exposed....turning off the water line to the heater and when I freak out, I have no hot water, they blame me for turning it off which I did not. I asked for a lower fee since they never turned a hot water faucet to see if it worked. I put the bill on my Capitalone credit card which intimidated them as they agreed I could still pay $180 but I will get a check for $30. Needless to say, if if do not get it, I am putting their names for all people to see. They have a reputation but I think it is unjustified. Wasted hours of my time, dealing with the problems of their lack of professionalism. Paying more is no guarantee you will get better service ! who says otherwise ? My vent was clogged up and disconnected and it took them minutes to clean it.
