interesting that it's played after Nf3. i sometimes play 3. Nc3 a6 as a waiting move to avoid the Nge2 exchange line since i'm delaying Nf6 until the opponent makes his own concession. thanks for the coverage!

-Black’s idea of waiting for white to move his bishop before capturing is to use an extra temp slowing development. Carlsen achieves this by immediately striking back with B5. It’s that much better as black not only makes white lose a tempo, but he also gives a second option for the light squared bishop while getting a pawn into the game.

Eric Rosen has a dvd series on the London. I watched his advertisement, watched him play the London on numerous occasions. Very excited to purchase his London DVD at the first of the month. Anyway, it’s killing me to find out how Eric meets 1...c5. At my chess club, after 1.d4, a NM played 1...c5, The Old Benoni. I played 2.c3 and lost the b2 pawn after 1.d4 c5 2.c3 d6 3.Bf4 cxd4 4.cxd4 Qb6 - and now Qb6 attacks both d4 and b2. I played 5.e3, then he played 5...Qxb2. I learned afterwards that I could have played 5.Qc2, and if Black plays 5...Qxd4?? , White has Qxc8+. GM Simon Williams teaches 1.d4 c5 2.d5, and 1.d4 Nf6 2.Bf4 c5 3.d5. What concerns me is what to do if Black plays a move in the Czech Benoni, 1d4 c5 2.d5 e5. Now Bf4 may not be a good move, 1.d4 c5 2.d5 e5 3.dxe5ep fxe6 4.Bf4 (?). So Eric, do you play 1.d4 c5 2.d5, or 1.d4 c5 2.c3? And if you play 2.d5, what do you play after 2...e5? Thanks! Looking forward to your DVD on the London next month.

Eric Rosen - I am half way through your London course. I am learning so many tricks, traps, tactics, strategy. I’ve bought several Fritz trainers over the years, but no opening trainer has covered all aspects of the game, especially times when White goes wrong. Very, very instructive. Thank you so much for the course and answering my question in a video! I can’t wait to surprise my friends at chess club with 1. d4 c5 2. dxc5! I may even surprise our resident life national master. He peaked in high school at 2350. A wonderful teacher at our club.

which was discovered as a trendy move 20 years ago and is now one of the three mainlines.
i always wondered how bishop g5 is a good move 13:12 black can still push him back with his h/g pawns developing them as well.
In general, pushing both the h and g pawns is considered somewhat dubious because it weakens the kingside especially as black usually wants to castle kingside in the QGD.
In the QGD mainline, Bg5 helps white fight for control of the d5 square by attacking and pinning black's knight which is defending that square. If black wishes to play h6 and g5 to get rid of the pin black would have to give up something in return, namely pawn control of squares such as h6 and h5 and more open lines toward the king side. Generally the drawbacks of h6 and g5 outweigh the benefits but especially if black is already castled on that side.
