Mike this is a really good simple honest tutorial and no added stuff that confuses people. Although I did like your comments at the end about the misery of the job! I already had my mower on a divided ramp to get access because my blades were wrenched down so tight! So, I found your video to make sure there was not something I was missing because they were on so tight. Finally, I had to actually use a piece of plastic pipe to extend the moment-arm (increase torque) of the box-end 15/16 wrench. Even had to use both legs / feet to push on the extended wrench to loosen the last one that was on even tighter than the other two! It was a job to keep the blade blocked with a small 2x4 piece while I positioned myself under the mower, and assured it would not slide off the ramp from my pushing the wrench/pipe extender with my legs! I am alive to post this thank you for the assurance that I was not missing anything, especially the difficulty of this task! Keep up the great tutorials. I will keep a tab on them for other things.

Would you happen to know how much of a gap there is supposed to be between the blades? I have a JD D110 and just had some JD OEM blades installed and I noticed it cuts uneven and my yard looks terrible. I looked under the deck and noticed about a 1/2 inch gap between the blades and I'm wondering if that's what the problem is?
Hmmm that's strange the blades are brand new and the small engine shop said they leveled the deck. Is there any other reason that could cause an uneven cut? I'm gonna take the mower back in tomorrow, that hurricane will be here by Thursday.@@MowerMike
If you had a clean level cut before, whoever put the new blades on messed up the deck. Leveling the deck is not hard if you have the manual and there are some YT videos.
It might be good to mention that if you plan to buy new blades know what you need. For instance, the John Deere blade has a 7 point star pattern where others may have a 6 point star pattern and others may just have a small hole on each side of the mounting hole. If unsure, take your blade off and look at it first. Or, take it with you when you go to purchase the new blades.
Excellent point, I have purchased many wrong blades in my past. I have the best luck just taking my old one to the hardware store to make sure I get the right one.
I usually lift one of the rear wheels (Just grunt and lift) and put a block under it. That gives me enough height to easily reach the blade bolt on that side. Make sure to chock the wheel on the other side and set the parking brake. If you drill a 1/2" hole in the top of the deck a couple of inches in from the tip of the blade sweep you cal put a bar in from the top to hold the blade from rotating while you loosen the blade bolt.
Thanks for the video. I'm working on replacing the blade on my S120 and it's nice to know what size wrench I need to buy at Home Depot when I go into town tomorrow.
Your awesome! Thank you. Why didn't I find this years ago... I guess cause my father in law maintained the mower. He passed away so its now my turn. Thanks for your tips!

Hey Joe it doesn’t matter if they line up with each other or not. The key is they are pressed firm up into that star pattern and you don’t put them on upside down.
Had a Simplicity tractor for years and taking the deck off is sooo easy. I didn’t realize how easy it was until I made the mistake of buying a John Deere. What a pain to remove and reinstall the deck. I still take it off (cursing all the time). Maybe I will try this method and just maybe my right angle impact will work to get the blades off. My next tractor will be another Simplicity for sure. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for the video and I got the blade off , sharpened it however no matter how I position myself i don't have enough room to hold that blade up against the spline and when I try and tighten it I must be spinning the shaft because the nut doesn't tighten unless the blade is against that spline and, laying on my side, I don't have enough room to get both arms under the mower to do that. i tried and tried but now I am giving up. I was wondering if you can make a video talking about cleaning underneath and the decks with garden hose attachments. I have noticed too that there is no point in cutting grass lower than the 3 setting. Why would they have to lower settings if those setting would pretty much chop off your grass? If the grass is thick or wet it's almost impossible to cut on the 3 setting. I have to raise it to 4 or somewhere in between 3 or 4.

I had a hard time trying to get the blades off of a John Deere 125 Automatic (Twin cylinder) with a 12" long 3/4" box wrench. I didn't want to take the deck off. I needed to jam the blades stuck, so the blades wouldn't turn while I tried to unscrew the blade's nut. On the grass discharge side, I put a 2"x4" through the discharge hole and that worked well enough. I then smacked the 3/4" wrench end with a mini-sledge and it came loose. On the other side, I could not figure out how to jam the blade to keep it from turning. I tried a couple things like jamming a wrench between the deck and the blade, but it wouldn't catch enough. By some luck, I noticed a hole was drilled in the top of that side of the deck. I brought various phillips screwdrivers and I found one that fit the hole reasonably well. That allowed me to smack the wrench with the mini-sledge and loosen the nut. For both sides, I lifted the deck and put two brick thicknesses under it. That gave me enough clearance to work. I tried PB Blaster on the second nut, but I'm not convinced it helped.
Yep PB blaster never did me any favors. I understand your pain I have struggled with many a blade. Your best bet is to go buy a cheap battery powered impact and zip those bolts right off.
For years all I do is attach a c-clamp to the mower housing so that the blade will stop against it. That makes it much easier to really crank on that nut.
Question: So I bought a bagger for my S130 John Deere. It comes with blades. Do I absolutely have to change the blades for it to work correctly? I can’t get a straight answer from anyone. I get both yes and no’s. Your thoughts? Or anyone else?
With a bagger you want the straight flat blades that shoot out the side. As long as you don’t have the mulching blades that have the saw tooth patter on the top you should be fine.
Tip for stuck blades: take the deck off like he said and flip it over. Then put the wrench on and if you don't have an impact, use a hammer and tap the wrench a few times. It'll take most the tension out so you can finish it by hand.
I just flip the deck over and grind the blades before I put it back on in the spring. It's pretty easy to do as it is shaft drive. Although I think it is time for new blades as the tips are starting to get rounded and that is the most important part of the edge. On the other hand, getting the snow thrower attachment on and off is a real pain. It's heavy!
@@MowerMike Kubota GR2000. I got it thrown in with the house deal. It was sitting in the garage with the thrower attachment on when we viewed the house so I figured I was going to need it and asked to have it thrown in when I made my offer, which it was. It has a 20 hp Kohler and a 48 inch deck, so not any bigger than most garden tractors, but laid out differently. Everything is horizontal and shaft drive except the belt that connects the three blades together on the deck. For the extra 3 times as much money, not only do you get orange paint, but also some sweet but unnecessary features like 4 wheel drive, power steering, shaft drive, and a hydraulic for the deck and thrower. Because of the hydraulic, the deck comes on and off super easy. It can set the deck right on the ground and pick it up from there too. The thrower not so much, because it is sooo heavy and you have to lift it. It is a 2 man job. But for my money you save a lot (over 50%) and get the same functionality going with a Cadet or a Deer and a separate walk behind thrower. That is what most of the folks around here run. It is what I would have got too if the Kubota wasn't sitting in the garage and the owner wasn't willing to throw it in with the house. If you painted the Kubota yellow and parked it beside a Cadet most people couldn't tell the difference.
GLAD TO SEE OTHER GUYS ARE ABLE TO MAN HANDLE And get things done .... use the force luke.. use the force lol !! great video man . you get a thumbs up.
I have a question that may seem strange, but I have a reason. I hired someone to do an annual check up on my lawnmower, a John Deere X350 . I’ve decided I don’t trust said person. No receipts no job description.. do blades come painted? My blades are stainless steel looking and they have rust on them and it was just done towards the end of February. I have used my mower twice since. There are no stickers on the blade or anything. Blades are expensive.
On the 2023 versions of the x330, 42" mower, the blade bolt is an M12 (18mm), the one wrench you most likely won't have in your toolbox. Off to the hardware store!
I can see at 1:12 in the video the nut is not tight against the blade. The blade moved, but the nut didn't. This method is not going to work for most people.
Should definitely change them at least every 2yrs. Waited 4yrs for mine. They're probably not coming off. 😢 My mower is an L100. It has 2 bolts for each blade going up into a bracket on top of each blade.
I've tried everythign to remove the bolts. Propane, pounding with a hammer, they won't come off. I can't balance them, I can't sharpen them, I can't replace them. The only thing I have left to try is an impact wrench and a breaker bar. None of these videos help because the bolt don't come off.
@@MowerMike well many years ago when I was a teenager I worked for a landscape gardener and that’s what he told me to do anytime I was working on or cleaning the lawnmowers. Not sure if that little bit of safety advice really applies here but since that time I still disconnect the spark plugs lol.
Disconnecting the spark plug was mostly important with walk behind or other engines that don't have an ignition cut off (like a key switch). There is that VERY unlikely possibility that turning the engine could cause the plug to fire and possibly send the piston down turning the crankshaft and blade. VERY remote possibility. But, Safety First!
@@MowerMike It is a good idea on magneto engines in case the ignition isn't totally killed and a spark plug fires. Probably more applicable to a push lawn mower than a garden tractor with the key out.

Real informative and its what I needed to see.
Glad it helped
For years all I do is attach a c-clamp to the mower housing so that the blade will stop against it. That makes it much easier to really crank on that nut.
You are smarter than I am sir!
Have the spindles been replaced ?
No idea that mower is long gone
Question: So I bought a bagger for my S130 John Deere. It comes with blades. Do I absolutely have to change the blades for it to work correctly? I can’t get a straight answer from anyone. I get both yes and no’s. Your thoughts? Or anyone else?
With a bagger you want the straight flat blades that shoot out the side. As long as you don’t have the mulching blades that have the saw tooth patter on the top you should be fine.
Thanks I appreciate the video well explained fixing to attempt to change my first blades!!! Hope you have a great day ! Good job 😊
Thanks glad you got back to mowing, sharp blades make alll the difference
Perfect video! Thank you! Getting under my D140 now to replace blade!
Good luck you got this!
Simple. Also if you can take the deck off. An opportunity to scrape the deck clean as well.
You inspired this Nana to go for it! No longer intimidated ❤
You got this! If they are stuck a cheap battery powered impact wrench makes this job a snap.
Thanks so much for the tip!
Tip for stuck blades: take the deck off like he said and flip it over. Then put the wrench on and if you don't have an impact, use a hammer and tap the wrench a few times. It'll take most the tension out so you can finish it by hand.
Just try and lock the blades up before you wack them with something like a 2x4
@@MowerMike Most definitely
I just flip the deck over and grind the blades before I put it back on in the spring. It's pretty easy to do as it is shaft drive. Although I think it is time for new blades as the tips are starting to get rounded and that is the most important part of the edge.
On the other hand, getting the snow thrower attachment on and off is a real pain. It's heavy!
Damn that sounds like a bigger mower than I have ever worked on. What model is that? I agree the end of the blades do all the work
@@MowerMike Kubota GR2000.
Haha thanks for the response. Being in Texas I don’t know Jack about snow blowers
@@MowerMike Ya, I'd think most of the talk down there these days centers on backup generators and wood stoves!
Great video! I just changed my first blade ever!
Very cool congrats. You are just getting started!
Thanks! A straight to the point instructional video.
Glad it helped
Excellent. I hate having to take off the whole carriage. This helped a lot. Thank you!
Glad to help
Mike if my Craftsman has 2 blades can I take 1 blade off and cut my grass my deck is 42
No by all means do not do that! That will throw your deck way off balance and cause issues.
I'm glad you said it is difficult, it is.
Yep a lot of it depends on who put the blades on before you and how tight they are. It will be easier next round.
GLAD TO SEE OTHER GUYS ARE ABLE TO MAN HANDLE And get things done .... use the force luke.. use the force lol !! great video man . you get a thumbs up.
Haha thanks, get’r done. If you liked this one check out the one I released yesterday.
Does it matter what direction??
Just make sure the sharp part is on the bottom side towards the grass and you are good.
What if you have three blades on your mower?
Hmmm think on that you don’t need me to tell ya. I have faith you can figure that puzzle out
Thanks from France. Good job.
Wow didn’t know you had mowers in France, very cool. Glad it helped
Wow just checked out your channel. Y’all are amazing I am subscribed and on board!
Hey! Thanks! That's so nice of u. Feel free to diffuse around u if u want.
Why did you leave the blade Loose?
You must have seen something I missed
How many blades john deer has?
Depends on the Deere
Thx. Need to get me one of those keep right signs!
That was a stolen sign from 1971 in west Texas, I don’t think you can buy them. ;)
THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE TUTORIAL! SIMPLE ENOUGH IF ALL GOES AS IT SHOULD.
Yep very simple as long as you can get those nuts loose.
😂😂😂 great video and sense of humor! Definitely not an idiot!!
Are you sure? Everyone else on here calls me an idiot who can’t read directions. Haha thanks for the comment
Where do you buy them
Hey you can go to any hardware store and ask or google your model on Amazon and find them that way. Good luck!
Haha wow you are a sticker. If you have mowed with them common sense says some of that paint got worn off. X350 is one sweet ride
Thank u for the tip on putting the blade on correctly
Any time
On the 2023 versions of the x330, 42" mower, the blade bolt is an M12 (18mm), the one wrench you most likely won't have in your toolbox.
Off to the hardware store!
Get’r done
I can see at 1:12 in the video the nut is not tight against the blade. The blade moved, but the nut didn't. This method is not going to work for most people.
Then I highly suggest you do not do it this way. Maybe turn the nut left to tighten it, just do the opposite of whatever this goofball is doing.
Awesome! Good job Brother!
Thanks!
good vidio. Left hand thread on blade nut
No torque spec?
Tight!
Should definitely change them at least every 2yrs. Waited 4yrs for mine. They're probably not coming off. 😢
My mower is an L100. It has 2 bolts for each blade going up into a bracket on top of each blade.
Get a cheap impact wrench will zip them right off. I have a few videos on stick blade bolts you can check out
John Deer recommends using a Torque wrench
Always listen to John Deere over a goofy guy on UA-cam
Hey do you know what the torque should be?? TIA
@@MowerMike 🤣🤣🤣
@@Whatever_Stitch_Quilting Just as tight as you can get it with a wrench. Am sure you can google it if you need a better answer.
great video young man, im proud of you!
Young man??? Thanks for the compliment!!
I've tried everythign to remove the bolts. Propane, pounding with a hammer, they won't come off. I can't balance them, I can't sharpen them, I can't replace them. The only thing I have left to try is an impact wrench and a breaker bar. None of these videos help because the bolt don't come off.
You know what they say about free advice lol it is free. Why exactly did you leave this comment?
Very well done. Thank you.
Glad you liked it!
Thanks, Mower Mike you just saved me $200 and saved my ass as my wife was about to kill me.. Lol
Haha I have seen that look from the wife before glad I could help.
Great video, just enough info. I just drive my tractor up two tire ramps/lifts to get another 8 inches of clearance.
Nice well done
Great video! Thank you
Glad it helped
Good job
Medium size breaker bar with a socket would have been easier, I think. Otherwise, good video. Thanks!
Yeppers I agree
Good video brother, thanks.
Glad to help!
Might want to try a blade lock, about 10 or 15 bucks, removes 95% of the hassle
Thanks for the idea, I didn’t even know such a thing existed
Great job, thanks for the video
Glad it helped, now get to mowin!
Thanks
Glad it helped
Looks like clockwise to loosen counterclockwise to tighten
You got it backwards
Glad you asked. I watched this video just to figure that out.
You forgot to mention which way the washer , that is not flat , goes on before the nut
It doesn’t matter
According to the instructions on the new blades the cupped side goes towards the blade.
Good job dude
Thanks was a fun one
I always have to use an impact gun to get my blades off
Good call
Agreed, tahr the mower deck off. 6 pins and well, well worth it.
Yep makes it easier if you can handle wrestling the deck
Good video thank you. Also I would mention to disconnect the spark plug ;)
Hey thanks for the comment. I am not following the spark plug deal, why would you disconnect it?
@@MowerMike well many years ago when I was a teenager I worked for a landscape gardener and that’s what he told me to do anytime I was working on or cleaning the lawnmowers. Not sure if that little bit of safety advice really applies here but since that time I still disconnect the spark plugs lol.
Hey I like it, haha Maybe he was onto something
Disconnecting the spark plug was mostly important with walk behind or other engines that don't have an ignition cut off (like a key switch). There is that VERY unlikely possibility that turning the engine could cause the plug to fire and possibly send the piston down turning the crankshaft and blade. VERY remote possibility. But, Safety First!
@@MowerMike It is a good idea on magneto engines in case the ignition isn't totally killed and a spark plug fires. Probably more applicable to a push lawn mower than a garden tractor with the key out.
Only once before every a new man 2 times and put the most blades back on I guess that's 3 but when I was doing the commercial with sharpen them every 3 days
Dang that is some serious mowin!
On 2 blade glove works on 3 blade with 15\16 nut too tight wedge with 2x4 use breaker bar or impact wrench and hand tight only on replacement. Use bench or hand grinder takes too long too much work with hand files. Also anyone tips on keeping 50" 3 blade from clogging mine clogs with grass and mud badly.
My only suggestion is to make sure you are using an open gass chute that shoots the grass out and not the mulching one.
Great vid
Glad you liked it
