There are 2 types of plug in hybrid, 1) those that are true plug in hybrid where the electric motor is designed to have enough power to be useful, and when in EV mode does NOT turn on the ICE engine when you floor it. It is designed to be just an EV when you want and it will go more than 30 miles. 2) the second type, with this is an example like the BMW. It is a struggle to keep the ICE engine out because the EV is for "assist" and not for EV. This was demonstrated several times in this demo. The problem with the second style is very problematic and giving PHEV a bad name is that when you switch in the ICE engine it will be mostly cold with high power - the very worst condition for an ICE engine.
