Project Varmit Part 3 - S52 oil pump nut, e34 oil pan, pick-up, and baffle

- In this episode, I safety wire (and loctite) the oil pump nut, weld in a VAC Motorsports oil pan baffle, and install the e34 oil pan and pick-up.
Putting as S52 in an e30 is not a terribly hard job, but when you take the time and spend the money to do it right, it becomes a pretty large project.
I have a load more footage to edit, so I'll try to keep them coming!! - Авто та транспорт
Love this, please post more! I see that you have a great set of skills and knowledge
Damn keep up these videos. Subscribed, looking forward to more of these videos.
Thank you! I'll definitely try, but right now the weather here is too nice to sit at my desk and edit:). That won't last long though....
Your videos are great! Thank you.
Subscribed.
Thank you so much! I'll try to get another one up soon! Take care!
Since you had access to a welder, I'd recommend tac welding the pump nut on before safety wire.
The safety wire will cause a vibration, especially at higher RPM due to the imbalance of the sprocket from the extra weight of the safety wire.
I dought that it will. Many companies make the nut and wire for racing applications.
The shaft will break
Bonobo. Love that tune.
Long live!!! M1, E21,E24 ,E34,E30,E28,E9 3.0 !!!😍😍❤️❤️
OO=[][]=OO very beautiful!!! BMW 2002 Turbo ,BMW 320I
What significant changes does baffle have on engine oil pan with this added?
How come you replaced the bearing cap bolts x2?
I remember doing this in the military
great video, heard that the m54 engines has this problem with the rev limited increased to 7000rpm, but not the S52 with the oil pump nut? i havent done it on my m54, as the engine has had the rev limited increased but doesnt live 6500-7000rpm very often.....
Do those OBD2 headers fit the e34 aswell as the cast it comes with?
I want a ride when shes done!
Not sure where you are located, but feel free to stop by! This one is actually up and running. We are faster at building cars than I am at editing:). Our head technician also has an S54 powered e30.
May i ask what type of wire are you using here and how do i get a hold of some? My 2006 X5 3.0i SAV i think bolt or nut you drilled hole in here has in fact come off. I need to open up oil pan to get bolt and have hole drilled into it as you did an run wire through to fully secure it to pully in oil pan. Thank you..
what torque wrench is that? why not re use the s52 windage tray?
How come you're swapping oil pump pick ups and only replacing the 2 main bearing cap bolts? I have a 320i m50 and I'm doing a full bottom end and top end service to the oil pump as well and curious.
What kind of wire did you use
Where u find the digital sounding torque wrench at that beeps when you reached the torque setting that has been set on the tool ??
This one is from Cornwell
did you have to modify the windage tray in the e34 oil pan at all?
I don't think I did.You know some e34's have them in the pan and some are separate, right? I used the pan with the built-in tray, but am under the impression that it may have been better to modify the S52 windage tray and use it instead. This is a foggy bit of information as it has been a while since that part of the project. I'm guessing the difference is likley negligible.
P.s this fix is ok but the shaft will break in the end , you need to replace the shaft with a hardened alternative as this is no permanent fix
Excuse my lack of knowledge, but what did u do that for? (3:22) Thanks in advance!
I am talking about the hole you drilled and why did you tie the nut to the gear?
The oil pump nut on these engines are known to back off, especially when driven hard.Locking the nut in place with safety wire keeps this from happening.
correct me if i'm wrong, you even used a glue?
Can see the reason behind same and thread lock for 'Belt and Braces' measure, just wondering had you considered a 'Roll Pin' through the nut and drilled and sunk into the hub of the sprocket... great work and great upload thanks...
if I may ask, why is the baffle needed? I'm starting to prep for this swap. I have the m50 oil pan, pickup tube, dipstick, etc. but I hadn't read anything about a baffle before seeing this video. any help is appreciated.
The baffle is mainly needed if you are going to track the car. It keeps the oil down in the sump during high-speed cornering. Cheap insurance if nothing else.
Good luck with your project!
Reggie's Motorworks thanks a lot!
I did a bit more reading and it seems there are two different types of M50 oil pans. Some come with a built in baffle, on that one you should leave it alone as it will fit right onto your S52. There's a second type with a removable baffle. On this type you should swap out the stock one from your S52 onto it.
Thanks for replying, your videos are fantastic.
What you are talking about is not a baffle, that is a windage tray. The windage tray keeps the turbulent oil from dragging on the crankshaft. Similar in that it is designed to keep oil in its place, but it won't help in high-speed cornering.
I am running a baffle and windage tray in my car. The baffle actually has a wall that goes down to the bottom of the pan with a one-way flap. The flap allows oil to come back to the pick-up, but does not allow it to be pulled away. Your oil pan has a sump that is offset to the driver's side of the car. When you are cornering hard to the right, all of the oil will want to go into that cavity, away from the pick-up. This flap keeps that from happening, so your pick-up never goes dry.
Thank you for the kind words! I hope to have another one up before too long!
Reggie's Motorworks you're absolutely right! Thanks for the clarification. In further reading in forums, it's apparent that a lot of people are using the terms "baffle" and "windage tray" interchangeably, which is far from correct. Thanks again for taking the time to reply, very helpful.
hello, hopefully you see this, but i was wondering why you went with a different oil pan all together? aren't there baffles to weld on to the stock pan?
Hey Reggie, any update on more videos?
I just started editing another one yesterday. I do have quite a bit on my plate, but hopefully soon:). I shot too much footage...
Are you able to purchase the s52 engines? Or would the customer be responsible for that?
We can (usually) source the engine, but on a swap like this we can discuss the possibility if you providing your own. If you provide the engine, we will want to spend some time assessing its condition before we install it. This particular engine only has 51k miles, which is becoming a rare find on S52's. Even with the low miles you can see that I do a lot of preventative maintenance prior to installing.
That would not be a problem, prefered actually. I want the swap done right and from my research and my location you seem to be the go to shop.
Excellent! Just let us know if we can help. Shop # is 317-773-0074. On any major project like this we'd want to do a consultation meeting (either on the phone or in person) so we can all be on the same page and map out the plan.
Shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for the help!
When is coming a new part? :)
I hope to have one up in the next couple of days. Thank you for the interest, and the gentle push!:)

I wanna do a M50 swap in spring and this video material is very helpful.
Greetings from Germany ;)
Awesome! Have fun with it!!
