I think personally the most disturbing part about Sofia is that she just barely manages to act normal, but you can see in the eyes, in the way she speaks it’s very much a learned skill, rather than being a normal person. Like a mockingbird.

This show is giving you what it takes to be a Batman villain. Penguin is not normal. He is a next level supervillain.
One of only a few Batman villains who poses zero physical threat to Bruce whatsoever, but makes up for it in spades with his intellect. Him and like the Riddler.
It really is cool how they made penguin so interesting and competent as a villaun. As a kid I always thought he was the most boring batman villain when you've got the likes of joker, mr freeze, bane, etc.

Also loved the switch with who Penguin planted the blade on, as it would have been easy for the underboss to say “Penguin just started a scuffle with me, obviously he planted it”.

Crime has risen 42% in Gotham. I just think batman is focused on the innocent people in the effected areas rather than criminals taking each other out in the rich part of town. Plus you have to imagine atleast a few weeks of recovery after being electrocuted and taking a shotgun straight to the chest
And also building his bruce Wayne persona , because now that he will become hope not just vengeance, he will be helping Gotham in more than just beating up criminals, he actually will start investing in the good will of the city as bruce Wayne , therefor bruce Wayne the billionaire playboy will come into play
Yep. That was the whole point in The Batman. Also, even in the movie, Batman was involved with Penguin and Falcone only because of Catwoman and Ridler. For the most part, it seems like he barely interacted with them, which makes sense. He is one man.
I think his suit is shock resistant. Also, his suit obviously has very advanced shock absorbant padding of some sort, which explains how he was able to tank a brief barrage of SMG rounds to his chest and not curl up in pain. His entire torso area is the most armored part of his suit so I don't think the shotgun affected him too badly. Plus, he's a superhuman, so he'll recover much faster than the average human.

Sofia is clearly a victim of abuse. But there's something even worse there, and Penguin is aware of it. There's a subtle part of the performances when they interact where we see actual regret and shame when he interacts with her both in episode 1 and 2. They both just don't speak of it. We know he doesn't actually feel guilty about Alberto. Carmine Falcone liked to choke women to death; we know he killed Selina's mother and her roommate that exact way. And "The Hangman" choked women to death. I think Penguin helped her father have Sofia take the fall for Carmine's serial murders. Sofia after all the abuse, lost her reputation and trust of family and friends thanks to protecting her father and the family. And the rage at that reality has her in tilt. She's a powder keg, and it all comes through in her performance. She has to win an Emmy. She has to.

Anyone who digs the gritty realism of Batman's villains; pls check out 'Arkham Asylum: Serious House on Serious Earth'. Beautifully written, gloomy and disturbing novel. I'm making for my channel a 'Kevin Conroy Tribute' for the 2nd anniversary of his passing; and I'm on a permanent Batman fix right now :)

They make you think Oz is going to set up Johnny Viti but at that moment he's got so much situational awareness that he realizes the photos are already on deck to take Johnny down, so he used the opportunity instead to cut off Sophia's right hand. Absolute brilliance.
Also finding a knife on him literally right after Oz just started a fight with him? Too obvious
I rolled my eyes so hard when I heard we were getting a Penguin show. I was like, why do we need this? Jokes on me. This show has been so freaking good so far. I dont think there has been a single second where my eyes haven't been glued to the tv. Peak writing.
My wife had to convince me because I had the same energy. Now I can't get enough!

Penguin underestimating Sofia is gonna come back strong on him. She clearly still thinks he's an idiot and someone to be used, but he doesn't see that. He thinks he's playing everybody. Sofia is as smart if not smarter than him in improvising.

Nah she is not smarter than him in improvising she leads to much on her impulses that is heavily shown to us in episodes 1 and 2 but she is SUPER sharp and smart there is no question to that and like Luca said “You always did have a nose for bullsh**” she can sense lying and see through them but she is definitely not a better improviser then Oz😅

Even though a lot of people have said that this is more of a mob show than a comic book show, the truth is, IT’S BOTH! Comics and graphic novels have told grounded, dark, realistic stories just like this show for decades. There’s no need to try and distance this show from its comic inspired material.
I love how they emphasize what flavor of villain The Penguin is to Batman. He's the criminal mastermind who is also a street dreg which makes him literally the epitome of "Organized Crime". Dude is smart as hell and has the weird charisma to pull it off too, you don't even see his deformity as a weakness at all.
Show is too good man. Matt Reeves + HBO match made in heaven. KNIFE SWITCH WAS CRAZY TOO😂
has all mostly been said but to sum up why Oz planted the knife on him instead. here are some of my reasonings.
1. we know from sofia that alberto refused his body guards epi 1. assuming he was guarding both siblings he would've known where alberto was heading the night he died.
2. He was also the sole survivor of the car that got hit first. remember 1st car said by oz words are patsies" Which was a miracle in itself, which OZ can attest to since he was in the truck.
3. he was longest length of timewise that was known with the guy after sofia told him take him away "quietly" so at any point he could've killed him, and just been lying to sofia about him being alive.
4. viti was in the public eye usually with the other guy so he couldn't have done it.
5. sofia has a spot open now that needs to be filled aka where oz comes in. It's highly noticeable how they are literally both physically and figuratively trying to push her out. (epi. 1 couldn't even ask about "her brothers location or if someone has seen him" and the whole one member says italy then the new boss says the same thing.
6. sofia knew alberto was going for the jewels, jewels never turned up, but were eventually found in castilo's apartment. how'd he get said jewels from alberto if that was what alberto was gonna use so him/sofia could get money so they could start up the new drug thing.
1 movie and 2 episodes in and I’m calling it, this is the all time greatest version of The Penguin ever! Colin Farrell, Matt Reeves and show runner Lauren LeFranc perfectly capture who and what Penguin is, an incredibly clever, charming, hard working, and devious crime boss who should always be taken seriously but is constantly underestimated.
Tbh Oz is treating Vic pretty well considering his lifestyle. He’s actually teaching him shit

All he had to was place the bag in the car. So he needed to run in the lot open the car put the bag underneath the seat and leave, he opened the door and started shuffling around doing unnecessary things. He’s just green and doesn’t know what he’s doing so he messed up under stress.

I'm glad that Vic failed his assignment this episode. Oz was asking way too much of him in the first episode, and it paid off barely. So many things that could have gone wrong, and in this one, again he asks something of Vic and this time it doesn't pay off but luckily he was able to escape. It really shows how close shave Oz plays his hands, how he can improvise under pressure. I do hope that Vic can grow and become an actual useful asset. I like the character, but if we get to Ep4 and Vic is still not fully integrated then for sure he's going to get popped before or at the end of this season.
In an interview Collin Farrel said Batman wouldn't make an appearance in the show. With the ending monologue of the movie you can tell Batman has a shift in the way he thinks so he's focusing more on helping people and you can see that in the newspaper clippings in the first episode that says Batman's been missing since the flood happened, but that monologue also includes Batman saying that the flood has caused there to be an area in the city that's currently unreachable due to the flood and that area would be ridden with crime since no one can get to that area

THIS IS PENGUIN. Yeah all the goof ass gadgets in the old batman shit, sure but this is truly Penguins "super power" and what makes him a compelling villain.
This version of Penguin does have a superpower, the power to improvise at damn near light speed!!
Batman's not interested in penguin because he underestimates him. And from the outside it just looks like two gangs taking each other out. So Batman's probably not really concerned over criminals taking each other out over saving actual people who need help.
The truth is that it continues to convince me with the performances, and I have seen the show seriously and it has literally left many plots that are implemented and everything is agreed and it is without a doubt one of the shows that I hope to finish. above. . For colin like the penguin.
I think he planted the knife on Castillo cuz he still has dirt on Vitti and that envelope would mean nothing to the maroni's without Vitti, thus Penguin means nothing to them.

I feel like they are foreshadowing Viks and his girlfriend dying in the near future because Oz is not really training him to be like him a master manipulator that gets away with it almost all the time and he is not treading lightly
The funny thing about all this is that when a penguin walks it pivots from one side to the other and that's what Oz was doing. This episode is literally The Penguin origin story. WOW!!!freakin awesometacular!!! What a show!!!

This is supposed to be a "realistic" universe so it's implied Superman might not exist. Keyword MIGHT. In the prequel books however there was a newspaper that mentioned a flying man in the sky. And it also mentioned kids in a bus pointing looking up toward the sky "looking for you know who" which strongly suggests the kids were looking for Superman.

Putting the knife on Castillo isolated Sofia and pushed her to trust Oz. Castilo was the only one she trusted, and the only one who could have leaked the fact they had Ervad in the basement to Viti.

Killing Castio was such a genius move. Johnny Viti isn't hard to kill, just get those photos to Luca and he will kill both Johnny and his wife. But with Castio dead Sophia has lost her most trusted henchman an since she is hurting from that, it leaves her wide open.
