Sock Shortys will be a series of short video tutorials on various topics relating to sock knitting. For example, washing socks, using sock blockers, stitch markers and progress keepers, etc. I will also be covering how to customize your socks by way of gauge, different cast ons, texture patterns, heels etc. My goal for this series is to empower the not-so-new-anymore sock knitter to take things to the next level, increase their skills and continue on their sock knitting journey with confidence.

THE MATH
Negative Ease - 1 inch less than the circumference of your leg, ankle, foot.
Circumference (minus 1 inch) x Gauge = Number of stitches to cast on
When decreasing stitches distribute the decreases evenly over the distance from leg to ankle or from ankle to foot.

Lovely! I have knit countless pairs of socks by now and I am still finding that sometimes I get them just right and sometimes not so, depending on the yarn and probably my mood when knitting them. I experiment with stitch counts and needle sizes, even decreases etc. So as a self-taught sock knitter I have found a lot just be trying and making mistakes. You give us a lot of food for thought. And your point about trial and error and no wasted time just resonates with me. You are a joy to watch a listen to. Thank you.

I'm completely new at knitting, managed my first project (a slouchy sweater) and just finished my first ever pair of socks! Excellent tutorial! I've been playing around with my needle size & stitch count but I did not do the crucial measurements of guage, foot, ankle & heel. Also, I notice a difference in fit when I knit 75/25, 80/20 or 85/15 fiber blend.

I'm beyond thrilled that you're doing this series of videos. I will be measuring again for my next pair of socks just to double check things. I'm still sort of new to it all and loving every minute of learning new ideas. I think the biggest problem I have right now is socks sliding down. They don't feel too tight when I put them on at all. Wow Denise! This is one of the most knowledgeable Podcasts ever been done on Sock gageing. Eventhough difficult to explain at times nobody has made it so crystal clear as you have. Many patterns and knitters do change needle size after knitting the cuff but I don't ,unless it's a colorwork sock, and never had a problem with the fit.

This is an amazing tutorial! You’re an exceptional teacher! There is a pattern I knit that I really really wanted to work fit-wise but they bunched up where the top of my foot and ankle meet. Thank you for solving the problem for me. I can’t wait to try the pattern again with the modifications you suggested (decreasing stitches over that area). I think everything you talked about is applicable to toe up socks as it is to top down socks but I’m wondering if you plan to have an episode about toe-up socks?

Thank you so much Denise for this awesome video. I have only knit two pairs of sock and I decided to do those at worsted weight. One of those was the rye sock by Tin Can Knits so I will definitely look at the rye light sock pattern. I jumped in encouraged by friends to join a kal for the i scream sock pattern. That pattern offered I think four sizes the largest being 9 inch foot circumference and i'm 10 inches. I went with the XL size (9 in) and cast on 80 stitches. I was thrilled that the ribbing at the top of my sock and as I continued down to the heel, which I watched your shadow wrap heel video first, actually go on and up my leg. They do look huge compared to store bought socks I purchased. I've now done a stitch count and I'm at 32 stitches and the designer is at 36 stitches on a 2.5 mm needle. I'm now thinking of just setting that sock aside and casting on 80 or 100 stitches in fingering weight yarn and do a in the round long gauge swatch using say a 3mm needle all the way down to a 2mm. I'm not a swatch knitter, I've no idea what my average gauge is on any weight yarn I knit with (awful isn't it :D ) --- Anyway a very long comment to say THANK YOU for all you share on your UA-cam platform - it is truly appreciated. ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much. I am in the beginning stages of errors. I have several family members who wear size 14 shoes. My first and biggest error, assuming big feet translates to size large socks. Keep watching these videos, over and over, until you understand. It will save you a lot of time and frustration.
Ah, yes... knit, frog, knit, frog. A very long time ago, made a LOT of socks-Regia, Socka(no longer), + others. Last summer, got back into socks. WHOA!! Learned that the beautiful, SWmerino blend yarn is much thinner than the “old” yarn. Fast forward to the past few months: Lesson I learned = even tho I frogged, kept going Down in needle sizes, I FINALLY found the Sweet Spot that Fits my ankle and foot (ankles got ..ahem..larger ?!?!?). Now I have stitch counts for leg & foot for needle sizes US 0, 1, 1.5 and 2. As well as foot lengths. Wahoo! I also know if I change my toe from round/star to a wedge style, I need to adjust length, means I may have to rip back. But it’s okay! Once all those pieces of the puzzle are perfect, I know I can Zip along with most any pattern, stripes, ribbing. Don’t give up! Might be a slower process, but that Custom Fit Sock is truly Awesome!

Thanks, Denise, this is so helpful! I think adjusting the stitch count for the size difference between leg, ankle, and foot will make such a difference in my sock fit! I have an issue I'm wondering if you can help with. When I calculate what I should cast on for a cuff, using my gauge and even factoring in a generous negative ease (1 inch or even 15-20%), it still comes out too big. For example, my calf measurement is 11.5-12" but the circumference I ended up with on my last pair of socks to get the cuff to stay up at all measures 9.5". How can I plan for this? And any ideas why this might be the case? Does it come down to how I'm measuring (flexed vs. relaxed), or are my legs just squishy shape shifters? (I have heard our feet can be quite malleable.) Does anyone else have this problem?
Iv had to cast on 72 sts bc where a patterned sock sits on my leg, however Im usually a 60st cast on. Also, there is a heel turn calculator online anyone can look up. I use that since the sts from patterns are to big for me.

This was very informative and helpful. I've been taking different pieces/elements from patterns I've enjoyed to try to make my perfect sock. For example, in currently working on a pair of DRK Everyday socks by Andrea Mowry but am using Kate Atherley's toe up barn toe for longer toes formula as that toe shape works the best for me. I'm not sure if I'm going to knit the Fleegle heel in the pattern or if I'm going to use the shadow wrap heel. I'm flat footed an tend to wear out the bottom of my heel so I reinforce them before I wash/wear

I’ve been so disgusted with my sock knitting related to fit. This video is the most helpful of anything I have seen. I quit knitting socks for quite a while because of my not wanting to make another pair for myself that doesn’t fit. You’ve given me hope to try again. Thanks so much for the excellent explanation. IF you are watching this video, and have never knit socks before, there are two other great examples of garments that you want negative ease. Hats and mittens. These are both garments that don't work, if they are at 100% ease. They fall off. 🙂 Socks work the same way. Re: gauge-when do you need the rows per inch? The reason I ask, is that I tend to measure my sock as I knit for length. I don't do it by number of rounds. Maybe I should. 😊 Also, if you are knitting knee socks, and have larger calves, would you want to add another measurement for your calf at widest point?

I'm practicing socks with Patons Kroy (more cost effective while I'm learning). I'm on my 8th pair in a month. I'm getting 6 sts/inch, but Kroy is definitely thicker than my other 4-ply yarns. I'm having to go down to 48 sts on 2.5mm to make them fit. Now I know that I'm a loose knitter (on 9-inch circulars). My stitches are uniform and the fabric is nice, so I'm not sure if I need to go down a needle size or not. 🤔
I am in the same boat. Just finished my first socks with Kroy, and while they fit well (haven't worn them with shoes yet), I'm questioning wether the gauge I chose will be too loose.
For reference, 48 stitches, 3.25mm 9" circulars (I'm a tight knitter), with a 7 stitch x 10 row per 1 inch gauge.
She mentioned that 7 stitches per inch is potentially too loose, but this yarn is a bit thicker then most sock yarn, so I'm not sure how to translate the advice.
Love this and know I will continually use it for reference. It's very timely now as I am in the process of decreasing in foot after finishing shadow wrap heel (foot and toe were not snug enough). I also wonder about toe shape in decreases. Is it always necessary to use a knit row in between the decrease rows? What would it look like if I didn't? This learning is so much fun! Thank you, Denise. BTW, I've made 5 pairs of socks using your pattern; my favorite is with Percolated yarn colorway. I am now trying a rolled top to make peds for garden shoes.

If you do not knit a plain round between decrease rounds, the toe will be too shallow and will not fit properly or as deeply as you would like.

I have a question about Shadow Wrap Short Row Heel; Is It possible to knit a boomerang heel by using this method?
Truth be told, I've never tried it so I can't give a definite answer. It may be possible. I would search here on UA-cam.
Can you discuss how a sock should fit for those of us with high arches? I knit at 9st/in on size 1 and the stitches are fine except in front of the ankle bone where there is some distortion. Should they be this way or not, if not, how do you fix it?

You the sock itself can be the swatch. 10 to 20 rounds will give you an accurate gauge. Cast on using the magic loop method and start knitting, then measure. Sometimes things seem a bit harder than they actually are.

I'm not using any knitting needles in this tutorial only a clover tapestry needle. Is that what you are referring to?
