    This video was full of nostalgia for me. I think I was in grade 9 when I listened to the Dixie Cups on the radio. Difficult not to sing along to the lyrics decades after. I bought Blonde On Blonde when it first came out and I've never experienced an album that took over my soul like that one did. I thrill over the poetry of the lyrics, magic for me. And Gram Parson around 73 was for me the feel of those university days. In the 90's I dug deeper after playing the Byrds box set and got totally obsessed with his personality. Thanks for this raising of my spirits with these fond remembrances.

      I agree that Blonde on Blonde is an incredible record. His song writing was like no other. ♥️
      I wish we still had sweet songs playing on the radio like Chapel of Love. Things have sadly changed.

      Some old LP's, and singles, had a, `deeper groove,' which helped to resist ticks & pops, bad sound from scraping, handling. Eventually, many, `modern LP's,' had: Variable ~ Groove & Depth spacing, on a record with dynamic range, where the lathe making the first, `lacquer disc,' provides thinner, lighter, closer ~ together grooves when there isn't much sound. If you hold a disc like this, at a bit of an angle in the light, you may be able to see this. Classical records, in particular, are likely to have this, in order to provide more time on each side. This is another reason why records shouldn't be touched by one's fingertips, should be handled carefully!

    Hey Melinda that's a nice selection of first pressings you have there. Glad to see you show "Station To Station", my favourite Bowie LP. Mine is also a US first press, which was unusual at the time for me, but I think i picked it up with the debut LP for Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow in an import record store one Thursday night with my best mate. I also have the US Polydor pressing of the Buckingham Nicks LP. I seem to recall finding that in a used discount bin. Love the records displayed in the background. The only one I'm missing is the Zombies "Odyssey & Oracle". I'm debating how i want to have it... LP or CD. Love your work as always Melinda. Take care sweetheart 😘

      I'm a vinyl person so of course I would tell you to get the vinyl pressing of Odyssey and Oracle. The modern day pressings do not sound as good as the early pressings. If you ever come across a second pressing that has a different album cover, it sounds fantastic at a fraction of what an original costs. There is also the 30th anniversary copy on the Big Beat label. It's wonderful and again, not as expensive. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

    Here is something I came across, Melinda >The original story concerning the Claudia Cardinale picture was that she objected to its inclusion without her permission, and her lawyers insisted that Columbia Records remove it. However, in "Bob Dylan par Jerry Schatzberg" edited by Luc Bellier and Olivier Lorquin (Galleries Luc Bellier & Dina Vierny, France, 2006), Jerry tells the story of the design change, refuting the long-held belief that it was done at Claudia's request: "For the inside cover of Blonde On Blonde, Dylan wanted a self-portrait of me that I had in my studio... He also wanted a photo of Claudia Cardinale that I had taken and that he saw in my studio to feature on the sleeve. After we'd done the first printing his agents - probably without informing her - refused to let her portrait to be used in that way. I supposed they didn't want her being used to promote someone else. Anyway, the photo disappeared from the later printings and I think the original cover is now a collector's item..." Claudia has since been reported as saying she never knew anything at the time about her photo being used for the sleeve!

    Hi Melinda…nice to see Kiss represented again 😊.
    It’s funny, I’ve been a fan since 1979 (I was 10), so I’ve lived with those songs on the debut for 44 years, and honestly I probably don’t need to hear them at this point. But it’s been probably 10 years since I’ve listened to the debut, and I gave it a spin last week. Maybe it’s a case of absence makes the heart grow fonder, but I was, maybe not amazed, but surprised how good it still sounds. Songs like Strutter, Firehouse, Deuce, and my favourite, Black Diamond, still sound as fiery and powerful as they ever did. Im sure haters will hate tho.

    I own some first pressings since I was the one that bought them new in the 70s and 80s. If I had a time machine and a sizable pile of cash, I'd probably go and buy up every record I've bought used, but as new, sealed originals. A recent score was finding a sealed Synchronicity on the KC-600 audiophile vinyl (as A&M released their popular first pressings on), and have a couple of Joe Jackson titles on KC-600 that I found used but very clean. For Synchronicity, I had already owned a release-day pressing but stupidly traded or sold it off when CDs were promised to have "perfect sound forever." 😐
    The only notable one I can think of is a used Moving Pictures I bought from someone I knew online, and he properly described it as having a few clicks and ticks throughout. (It's the Ludwig cut, so it's sought after.) It indeed had those, but I didn't play it much. But I pulled it out recently and gave it a spin, as I added a SweetVinyl SugarCube to the system a couple of years ago and it's nice to hear it clear all the way through.
    My biggest peeves are groove burn (wear)--so many used records I've bought in the past 15 or so years have had unacceptable wear, and my reject pile has several dozen records I need to get rid of. The other is off-center pressings. Those are like fingernails on a blackboard to me.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Рік тому

      I agree. We take a little gamble every time we buy a used record. That Synchronicity record is really nice.

    Regarding Pet Sounds, it was only issued in mono (in both the original release in 1966, the reissue in 1972 when it was coupled with Carl & The Passions - So Tough, as a double album), and the original CD release. Only when there was a Pet Sounds CD box set in the 1990s did a stereo mix first appear. Subsequently, this stereo mix has been pressed on vinyl in very recent years. Since there was no original stereo master tape, unless I’m mistaken, all stereo vinyl pressings are made from a digital file.

    I’m really glad you made this video. This was a question I’d been wanting ask, would you rather have an original pressing over a modern reissue? For me, in some cases, the original press is way more than I want to spend, so the newer reissue is fine. As you pointed out finding an original in great shape can be quite difficult. I don’t think most people took super great care of their records back then. Growing up my mom had one of those big stereo consoles (which I’d give anything to have now) and it had the stacking feature. Those records dropping down on top of each other did them no favors! Then you had that point in the late 90’s when “vinyl was dead” and people were either throwing their albums out completely or just putting away in the attic or cellar. All of this makes finding those first pressings that much more difficult.

    Love original pressings from 60’s, 70’s and 80’s but as we know, costs are skyrocketing. I’m wondering if the smarter buy is the follow up or early repress. Much cheaper and the sound quality still right ‘up there’ in most instances.

A guy called Graham Gouldman wrote a few Yardbirds songs, For Your Love probably being the best known, before he went on to be in 1 of my favourite bands of the 70s 10cc. With the RCA Victor U.S. record pressings, they made it even easier to identify when a record might have been pressed, looking at the "deadwax", at the end of the matrix number will be which stamper was used. The stamper numbers may be different on each side, but if you have a record with -1S on each side, you definitely have a first pressing from one of RCA's pressing plants. Each of RCA's different plants would have their own -1S stampers.
    I have a mint stereo copy of The Dixie Cups' "Chapel Of Love" LP plus the promo 45 of their hit song from that album. It sounds awesome in true stereo compared to the mono 45 version.
    The story, I believe, about the Ohio Express is that Neil Bogart put a studio band together while he was at the waning days of the Cameo-Parkway label. When he left that label, his next stop was the Buddah record label and he took the Ohio Express name with him. At that point, he actually established a real Ohio Express group. Neil and KKK productions made Buddah the bubblegum record label it became. While still at Cameo-Parkway, Neil introduced The Kinks to the U.S. Always on the move, Neil created the Casablanca record label and probably created disco. I believe that the Casablanca name was related to Humphrey Bogart. Although Neil shared the same surname, Neil assumed it and was no relation. Humphrey probably turned over in his grave, being a man's man only interest in the ladies where Neil was only interested in other men.
    With "Promo" copies, sometimes you have to watch out. Record companies will issue a promo, and it might well be a first pressing, but it might not have caught on right away or for some reason was banned from broadcast radio. Later, it might have gained some interest, so record companies issued another promo. For some records of which their popularity exploded in an upswing, they continue to press promos. In this case, the CBS Group would print "Reservice" on the labels.
    Some record labels wanted to really promote a record so one of the ways to pressed the 45's on color vinyl, to make them stand out. In other ways, they would often send out many promo copies of the same record. When MCA wanted to promote Olivia Newton-John in a big way, with her hit, "Have You Never Been Mellow", they sent out tons of promo 45's. One local radio station I know of, which used the "Boss Radio" format, received 100 copies of this 45.
    Many record companies sent mono promo LP's to the AM radio stations, as none were broadcasting in stereo at that time and FM stereo was in it's infancy. Some were specially mastered copies for mono. Some had run them through an "auto-level" unit so that radio stations didn't have to keep changing the audio levels. Radio stations which I knew of and was at ran everything through another "auto-level" unit or "peak meter". Having multiple copies of records allowed the radio stations to select the best sounding copies, with the lowest number of ticks and pops. AM radio, being mono, many of the distractive sounds were covered up, just because of mono's nature. For the same reason mono is used by the record companies to cover up the anomalies. A stereo recording is very revealing.
    OK. Back to mono radio station promo copies. Sometimes, with a little tweaking for radio, they might be different than the copies that a consumer would buy off the shelf. In cases of after mono LP copies were no longer sold, the record companies might just fold-down the stereo versions to create the mono promo versions. Atlantic records was famous for this, while creating exclusive mono mixes on it's 45's. Another Atlantic common practice was to also create separate bands of recordings which would not go into the next track, but would stop. This was true of the LP's which on a regular copy, one track would segue into the next. We had a copy of Yes' "Tales From Topographic Oceans", which was not only banded but mono. It's funny that Discogs doesn't list it, but I had the actual copy in my hands and played it.
    Oh, your $1. record was an overstock or cut-out. Most of these had some sort of modification to the covers. This was a way for them to dispose of the unpopular mono copies. The $4.98 price would have been for the stereo version, originally. Mono copies usually retailed for $3.98. Sometimes I didn't have enough money to buy a stereo copy, so I would buy the cheaper mono copy instead. The mono cut-outs were a literal goldmine to get popular records for bargain prices.
    Sorry for writing another novel, but we all like to learn new things.

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Рік тому

      Very fascinating. You really know a lot about promotional copies. Everything you said makes sense. Colored vinyl in those days would have stood out. It is also intriguing how some artists like Olivia got heavy promotion and sadly others didn't.

    I love that The Yardbirds Little Games LP! I've been looking for a copy on vinyl myself of that one for some time. And it's cool too that it's a promo! I've got the CD of it from the 1990s but hopefully one day I'll be able to get the vinyl original 👍
    I just got, about a week ago, something I've had in my Discogs Wantlist for a while. I've just been waiting for the right condition on the record and the right price and it finally happened. It's a white label promo of REO Speedwagon Live Again. This was the band in 1978 at the Record Plant in Sausalito, California in the recording studio doing a live show to a small crowd. I know Journey did one of these in 1978 also at the same place but every copy I've ever heard, no telling how many generations old they might be, were recorded off of FM radio and didn't sound very good unfortunately. But this REO Speedwagon LP is flawless! Of course it has the demonstration... Not for sale stuff on the label as well as the stamp saying it's a promo on the back cover. And all of that is cool but it is one of the most mint copies of an LP I've ever gotten second hand. There is nothing wrong with it and their performance is incredible. I've never even seen an album for the Journey Record Plant performance. I'm pretty sure there's one out there since they went to radio stations to play on the air. These were never sent out to stores to sell as far as I know. But I'm so happy with this REO Speedwagon album and I'm really glad I saw it and got it when I did.
    It may be me but I think that these original releases were made better. They seem to stay in pretty good shape through the years unlike a lot of releases nowadays. I don't know if the process was different pressing albums back in the late '60s and 1970s and even 1980s? But they sound different and many times with less flaws or pops and clicks. There are some incredible sounding records coming out nowadays but a lot of them don't seem to have the longevity of staying noise free even when perfect care is taken of them. And I'm just not sure why?
    Thanks for another great and enjoyable video Melinda. And congratulations on some cool and memorable finds!

    Thanks, Melinda! You have such a beautiful smile, only need to consider this! You, however, mention: Ohio Express. Before this group went to Buddah, as on the album you have, they had one hit single on one of the Cameo / Parkway labels, "Beg, Borrow and Steal." This is, `good, Bubblegum,' typical of this period, and is as good, perhaps a little better, than the song on your album. As you may be aware, Cameo / Parkway was very successful, for a time, with artists such as Chubby Checker, "The Twist," Bobby Rydell, Dee Dee Sharp, The Orlons, & so on. You show an Etta James LP from about this period, I'm glad that you like this! After Cameo / Parkway began to slow down, around the mid ~ `60's, Ohio Express obviously went to Buddah, which was really big on Bubblegum! The pictures remind me of some of the old, `Silent Era,' films, highly visual of course, as there was no soundtrack, where a, `bad guy,' a tall man dressed in all black, with a large black overcoat, large black Top Hat & large mustache, kidnaps a, `damsel in distress,' and the, `Good Guy,' must vigorously chase after them, to rescue her! Which he always does, including perils, many dangerous situations, some instigated by the Bad Guy. Perhaps you'll recall the, "Dudley Do~Right," cartoons, which were influenced by William S. Hart silents. "Beg, Borrow and Steal," if you must! Is available in, the, "Cameo ~ Parkway, 4 ~ CD Box Collection ~" 😁💃

    Most copies of The Yardbirds' "Little Games" LP that are labeled and packaged as mono actually play in stereo. You can identify these copies by the matrix number on the right side of the record label which begins with the letters XSB. True mono copies have a matrix number on the label that begins with the letters XEM and are much rarer than those that play in stereo.

    Hi Melinda, on one record (Ohio Express - Mercy) you said that “it’s still in shrink, which is really cool”. I’ve never really understood the fascination of leaving a record in the shrink wrap. Could you explain more about this? Does the shrink make it more valuable? I prefer to remove the shrink, and of course on an album with a gatefold cover you have to remove the shrink to enjoy the great artwork inside. Enjoyed your video, as always!

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Рік тому

      I say the shrink wrap is cool because most people didn't put their records in outer sleeves back then. The shrink wrap in some ways protected the record from dirt and wear and kept it looking nice. I'm not sure that having a record in the shrink makes it worth more unless it's sealed but many people use it as a selling point because of the reasons I already mentioned. Also shrink wrap can contain a hype sticker and a lot of people find hype stickers desirable. Thank you and take care.

      I believe the intact shrink wrap greatly reduces the wear and tear that inevitably happens to record covers that get handled over the years; especially to black or foil-wrapped ones (Quicksilver Messenger Service's first for the former, Steppenwolf's first for the latter as examples come to mind; They can look pretty beat up after many years). Also: I had always assumed that the Jethro Tull "Stand UP" LP was produced with the pop-ups for many years; Not the case? Glad I got mine when it first came out--a real classic! Now, can you believe that JT is NOT in the R&R Hall of Fame?! Also Boz Scaggs! I sure can't. Oh, but the Go Go's, LL Cool J, Tupac Shakur, Notorious B.I.G., N.W.A....? I always look to find a first pressing if possible. I have quite a few but one that stands out is Capitol's Meet The Beatles. I have 3 copies, but the first pressing is in terrible shape. The reason I think it is cool because it is more of a historical piece. It has evidence of Beatlemania all over it....the girl who owned it has her name plastered all over it, including both labels as well as love messages to Paul and it has been played to death. I wouldn't dream of trying to play it now but it is a genuine piece of Beatlemania! I had thought about tossing it but now I think I might hang it up on the wall instead. A really nice first press I have is a US version of Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? Jimi is one of my favorite artists so that is very nice to have. Great video and take care!

    A wonderful video as usual. What I remember most about first pressings is the wonderful different labels that they had and how they all just seem so pretty. The The thing I regret the most is during the mid to late '70s with the oil crisis. The recycled vinyl albums sounded horrible then you didn't want the first pressings. I myself have accumulated quite a few first presents. They just seem to sound better and hold up better than the newer versions not always but usually.

    Nice collection Melinda. For me, I go after "original pressings" (with the occasional lucky "first pressings) because while there may be a "cool factor" to them I'm not really aware of or concerned with, for me it is more about hearing the LP as it was done originally.
    "FYI: "First Pressings" and "Original Pressings" are not the same thing technically. 99% of "Promo copies" in any form are usually "First Pressings" even if the label is standard and not white or some other specialty. "Original Pressings" are almost never "First Pressings" because they are the first bulk issues distributed. It could be a run of 1000, 10,000 or even 100,000. Also, some early "reissues" are technically considered "original pressings" such as when they did not press enough in the first bulk distribution batch to meet demand. What would happen is a second order would be pressed within the same year or within approximately a 6 month time frame. That is why sometimes an LP with a release date of say 1971 for example and a release date of 1972 for the same LP are both considered "original pressings".
    If one happens to pick up the first pressing from the batch, then that would also technically be a "first pressing", but I have never heard of anyone in the consuming public getting that because 99% of the time those first few pressings released as bulk distributions usually go in the mail to friends and family. (I have direct experience of that in regards to The Mamas and The Papas first two albums. My parents and grandparents and first aunt and uncle all mysteriously received those in the mail. Turns out later that I learn that Mama Cass is somehow a distant relation of sorts and I'm told that I met her when I was around 2 years old or so. Too bad there are no pictures, but it was a family function).
    Interesting that you have an "Original" pressing of a Beach Boys LP (Pet Sounds). My dad's sister was going steady with Mike Love at the time of that LP. They went together for around 2 years before splitting. This also I recently learned, goes someplace to explain the Mama Cass connection.
    I have a few "first pressings" myself. I have far more "original pressings" though.
    Most of the music I listen to is older and the occasional click and tick don't bother me much because with the exception of classical music there is so much going on that your brain kind of tunes them out. That said though here is some info about that noise you hear on records:
    Most of the noise you hear on records that appear to be very clean and such is NOT damage, but dirt. Yes, one can get a hold of a record with groove damage one can't see, but it is not as common as you may think. Also that damage can occur from poor equipment, poor handling and even during pressing and shipping. (If that plate is near end of life and not taken off line in time there can be groove damage in pressing).
    Why do you sometimes hear noise with even new pressings? Answer: "Release agent" used in the pressing. No, they are not spraying "Pam" on the pressing plates, the "release agent" is in the formulation and some of it comes to the surface of the record when it is pressed. No amount of "Groove Washer" will get it off. Even my "goto" AIVS chemicals don't always get it off completely or at all. The only way to get it off for sure is with ultrasonic cleaning.
    Personally, I can except a little bit of clicks and ticks on my records, except for classical music. For me, that has to be dead silent only because of the subtle and very low gain passages in sections of pieces. Due to my crazy skills I learned though, most of my records of any genre, I don't hear any noise except at the lead in section perhaps. I even have some records that are as quiet as CDs somehow. (I call that level "luck").

    • @MelindaMurphy
      @MelindaMurphy  Рік тому

      Very cool information about the pops and clicks. I clean them and try to find scratch free pressings but that's all I can do. A few clicks and pops reminds me that I'm listening to a record that most likely has been around for a very long time. I honestly don't mind a few pops here and there.
      I'm with you on classical music. They have to be very quiet. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗

      @@MelindaMurphy Finding "scratch-free" pressings is not as hard as finding quiet pressings, but it is still very difficult. I have tons of scratch-free pressings to the naked eye and that is the best you can hope for. If your table is set up properly and everything and the scratches are either not visible to the eye or are "surface level" you should not hear them at all, not even a click. It is the deeper scratches that you will likely hear or worse and of course you would not buy such a record anyway except if you are buying on-line of course.
