    I have had an SL1 for years. The most bulletproof camera I have ever owned. It is my go to package for hiking in Arizona/New Mexico. I don't baby it at all. Throw it into the back of my Subaru, it has been banged against rocks, dropped, propped against trees and everything else. Rain, shine, sun, snow, hot (Arizona hot), cold, it doesn't matter. Always there, exposure is pretty close on auto and easily dialed in, autofocus is great, light weight, almost perfect ergonomics. The only downside is the rather small viewfinder, but hey, at this price you can't have everything. AND I don't have to memorize two thousand menu commands just to take a shot!!! Thanks again. Oh, I use a pancake lens (28mm I think) so it is so light that I don't even know it is there even after a full day of hiking. I have had two actually. The first one I left on top of my Subaru after a hike and drove off. Didn't notice anything until we got to a restaurant for lunch. Never found it, bought another one used on KEH and kept hiking.

      Great comment, always nice to hear what others have used their gear fro. 100% agree, this is a perfect glovebox camera. And now days when it cost less than a couple of spare batteries when could use it as a go pro with out worrying too much. The smallish OVF is just ok, but it has saved me once or twice when I though I missed the composition. Very nice feeling to chimp and see that I didn't cut Gunpowders ears :)

    I'm a pro motorsports photographer and have never used the "latest and greatest". My primary camera is a 70D, and still use a 50D at the track. I have the SL1 as a backup camera, I use it in the garage and paddock at the track, my wife loves it for travel, events, and knock around use, it is fabulous. Mirrorless cameras are getting so much attention for their size, I'll bet if more people looked at the SL line they'd be very surprised at what their getting.

    • @gearreallydoesntmatter
      @gearreallydoesntmatter  4 роки тому +1

      Great comment! Yes, mirrorless is really smaller with slow lenses or small sensors. Put good glass on it and all that's happened is that you lost the viewfinder.

    I never thought I would see a video like this. The Canon 100D was my first camera. I sold it about two years ago. With Magic Lantern raw video it was an extremely capable camera. Also, I miss dslrs. It might sound weird, maybe I'm the only one, but I really liked optical viewfinders.
    I'm glad to see older apsc cameras becoming dirt cheap. Photography is in my opinion the best hobby in existence and it would be great if more people could participate in it.
    Great video. :)

    • @ShutterKnack
      @ShutterKnack 11 місяців тому +1

      You're not the only one. Almost 2024 and DSLRs are pretty much dead (with the exception of Pentax). However, I find myself grabbing DSLRs moreso than my mirrorless cameras after the novelty fades off. I am not a pro though so to each his own.

    • @ApertureApex
      @ApertureApex 11 місяців тому

      @@ShutterKnack Yep. It's three years after my original comment and I maintain this sentiment.
      Looking through an optical viewfinder and having the analog tactility of a flapping mirror envokes a kind of engagement that mirrorless cameras simply can't replicate.
      I really miss some of my "worst" cameras for the sole reason that they were fun to use.
      Have a nice day :)

    I use an SL1 as my primary camera for photographing my items I sell online. I used to use other Canon models, and was momentarily using a 77D due to WiFi, but went back to the SL1 with long USB cord tethering, and I have an inexpensive power supply so I don't need to take it off the tripod to fiddle with battery issues or to eject the memory card. I use it on live view, so don't care about the small viewfinder. I like the touchscreen for focus. I use a wireless remote for actually taking the photos. It is perfect for my needs. I also have another one (or three) that I like to use for outdoor photography. Great little camera. I like the "kit" 18-55mm STM lens, too. It focuses close and is so light-weight and produces great results. It is my primary lens for my product photography, and works well for artistic photography, too. I have more expensive lenses, but I encourage people to rediscover the "kit" lens.

      I was in the same boat in 2021 after having been forced to sell my beloved Nikon D3100 that I traveled and shot with for years. Since then it really has been all about the lenses. A couple of the feature limitations frustrate me (ex. only 9 autofocus points) but having the forces me to up my skills by finding ways around them. However, I haven't bought any Canon lenses after trading my 18-35mm kit in for an 18-135 Canon superzoom, which I hardly use. I like fast apertures for how I shoot, and the L series lenses with the wider apertures are really expensive on Canon when I could buy the Sigma Art series instead and have both better glass and at better prices. With the right lens setup, almost any camera body will work. I don't feel constrained by my Rebel SL1 at all, and this video gives me a new affection for it in an era where everyone is celebrating the advances of mirrorless, a system I can't afford to switch to.

    The 200D (SL2) is the 1st DSLR I bought brand new and I love the little thing. It's affordable, portable and versatile. The 28mm ef-s pancake lens makes the dimensions that much smaller and is great for travel. I believe the SL2 is a bit chunkier with a more comfortable grip than the SL1. I don't own a mirrorless but the touch screen almost makes it seem like a hybrid between a mirrorless and DSLR. Great review as always.

    Years ago, I remember buying a 2nd hand SL1 for cheap. With kit lens. Canon colors, fast autofocus and quick button layout. It propelled my growth as a photographer and a milestone in my camera journey. Currently shooting Leica rangefinders for personal work and SL for paid stills work. But I always remember that little Canon SL1 and its touch screen. And putting on crop or full frame Canon primes, it can even cover a wedding. I think I still have the spare batteries, battery grip and charger in my desk. Cheap, quick, lens availabilty, IQ and fun to use. The Fujifilm XT-1 eventually replaced it in my next camera journey...

    I bought this camera in 2021 after shooting for almost ten years with a Nikon D3100, which I loved. I got beautiful images with my Nikon kit lenses until I lost my whole system when traveling in south America. After that, the Canon 100D was the most available option for my budget. My Rebel SL1/100D hasn't slowed down my photography one bit. To solve the dynamic range problem with washed out skies in outdoor shooting, I rely on ND and CPL filters to keep the color saturation and blue of the sky without losing the rest of my shot. Whenever people ask me whether they need a better camera body, I tell them to put their money into their glass instead. It continues to serve me well.
    I shoot mostly street, nighttime, and concerts, so I need wide apertures and I don't want to mess with ISO noise in post-processing. The ISO can be a limitation on this camera, but it's easy to solve with a couple changes. For lowlight photography, upgrading my lenses to faster apertures were the game changer. I don't need to use extreme high ISO because I have Sigma Art series f/1.4 primes at 30, 50 and 85mm focal lengths, plus a great little Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 zoom. Additionally, the Sigma Art series makes two absolutely killer crop sensor zoom lenses that beat the pants off the similar Canon L series lenses and for several hundred dollars less. If you want to shoot mostly with zoom, their 18-35mm f/1.8 and 24-70 f/2.8 are the best glass you can put on any Canon APS-C camera.
    If you can't afford the Art series, the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 that came before it is still a great lens, and Samyang makes a beautiful MF 85mm f/1.4 that you can grab used for ~$150. Christopher Frost has done really solid lens reviews on Sigma, Canon, Tamron and Samyang lenses for Canon which have informed my buys.
    I'm also having tons of fun with the Lensbaby Optic Swap lens system (available in 30, 50 and 85mm focal lengths depending on which optic). Their original Lensbaby series are pretty inexpensive now at second-hand prices and you can get beautiful effects that make your photography really unique.
    MPB is the best of all the secondary markets for camera gear. Plus you get their six-month warranty. Never buy new. There is no reason to eat all the depreciation on new gear when people are constantly upgrading and trading out their systems. You can get high-end glass at second-hand prices through them without any of the risk you have when buying from, say, eBay sellers.

Pairs nicely with the 24 pancake or nifty 50 for compact size or with budget L zooms (24-105 or 70-200 f4) when more flexibility is needed. Only thing I hated about it was the kit lens that came with it, my particular copy was awful. Recently purchased my dream camera to go with it, a 6D. I have been using a Canon SL2/200D for the past two years. The image quality is solid. I found ISO 6400 to be pushing noise levels. I very much like the touch screen. I also think the DPAF in video works very well. The only two ergo issues for me are a lack of a headphone jack when filming and my preference for a two dial/aperture-shutter speed setup. I do very much like the selection of EF mounts lenses. I have the 11-18, 24, 35, 50, 85. Thank you for the effort and sharing. I am a very appreciative subscriber. Thumbs up.

    The first time I had this camera out, I dropped it onto the pavement, which put a small dent in the prism housing. Worked flawlessly since, so cheap in cost doesn't always mean cheap in build quality.

    Nikon Z5, Canon 7d, Nikon D700, D300, D200, D7200, D500, Panasonic G9 and FZ1000. I have owned them all or still do. However, my favourite camera still is the Sl1 + 18-55 f4 + 55-250. Why because it's light, sharp and made of plastic. Why plastic over metal. Try shooting in the winter and you will know. The battery live on mine is far over 1000 shots. It easily beats all Nikons. I have taken the best bird shots with this camera and the 55-250. Far better than with the d700 and D3 plus 28-300. I don't like mirrorless and this is about the only option to carry around on your bicycle and so on. It exposes better than the 7d which I allways have to correct. It was my first digital camera and it could have been my last if did not think others would be better which they were not. Canon is not crazy.

      I "upgraded" to a full frame and kept my SL1. Then kept using the SL1 far more than the full frame. Then a couple years later got the SL2. The full frame just collects dust now so I'm selling it. The image quality from the SL2 is as good as the FF image quality in 99% of every lighting situation. I used to do professional portraits/headshots and used the 70d and 6d for that. Then I found that the SL2 produced beautiful headshots. So why keep that heavy FF when I can travel lighter with equally good results? The image quality of crop sensor cameras of the last several years has caught up with the IQ of FF cameras. I see no need for mine anymore.

    I’m going to buy one for use it as a second body/ personal use. I have a 7D Mark II and I always wanted a tiny camera for carrying it all day without risking my bigger camera.
    Sure, it can’t have the 65 All cross type AF, but I use all day the central AF points of muy 7DII, so for personal use it’s very suitable. IQ it’s great too, as my first T3i was.
    I think that’s perfect to complement with my kit, which is composed of a 10-18mm, 24-105mm, 50mm, and 70-200mm 2.8.
    The guy that’s selling it is asking about $250 bucks, so it is a no brainer.

    Gosh I'm still rocking my 1000D which I think was the pre-cursor to the 100D! I wouldn't mind the upgrade though-a bit spoiled with my G7X transferring photos straight to my phone, which I wouldn't mind being able to do from my DSLR

    • @langhamp8912
      @langhamp8912 4 роки тому

      I went from the 1000 to the sl1. The sl1 is incomparable better, and can also take video. It has a touch screen too. I haven't felt the need to upgrade the sl1, especially since the sl3 isn't any faster in autofocus.

    Canon entry level DSLR's are great option for anyone who is looking for good gear at low price for both photo and video. I own 800d + 24mm f/2.8 pancake and of course 50mm f/1.8 STM. Love it and do not see a need to upgrade my gear. The truth is that cheap DSLR offers much more than average user can take out of it. Skills first!

    I've used a 600D since 2014 and love it. Tried the 100D and found it too cramped with anything bigger than a pancake/nifty50 mounted. I actually find the 600D's grip a bit on the small side as I have average size hands but long fingers, so I use a battery grip which adds a little more height to the grip and makes it more comfortable, as well as balancing better with telephoto lenses.

    I know a lot of photography "gear heads" who always have the latest and greatest gear. One of my friends has a Canon Rebel XS. One day during a meet and greet some guys were just plain rude to him and joking about his camera. At the end of the day everyone was critiquing their photos on the big screen and my friends pictures were way better than any of the "gear heads". I brought that little fact up just to remind them and to give them a little payback for my friend. They didn't like it too much but oh well. I have since left that group. Even the older cameras these days are very capable in the hands of a person who knows how to use it.

    • @bfs5113
      @bfs5113 4 роки тому

      But consider the Rebel can be considered as luxury for some that can't even avoid a DSLR. "Gear heads" is just being human and it is the same as on the other side of the fence, saying that there are some Leica film camera owners don't know they need to remove the lens cap first, before shooting. 😊

    Even though I used Nikon D4S and D750 for work, but I still love my D3200. It's just a nice, worry free camera. The biggest issue I've found with entry level DSLR is the lack of AF finetune function. I see no reason why they decided not to put into their cameras.
    My 35, 50, 85mm are pretty much unusable wide open because of it. :(
