ANYONE SAID: BAD APPLE?
Let's take a step back. Why so many people says that older Touhou have crappy graphics?
Could be that LCD screens DO BUTCHER THIS KIND OF GAMES? Yes, they do.
CRT monitors do not display pixels as individual, discrete squares like modern LCD screens. Instead, CRTs use an electron beam to excite phosphors on the screen, which creates a slight blur and blends adjacent pixels together. This blending effect can soften jagged edges and create a smoother appearance, enhancing the visual experience of the pixel art. Also, old hardware have a unique way of handling color and brightness. The phosphors used in CRTs have a particular brilliance to them, and also colours dither and bleed (yes, colour bleeding) into each other. This results in richer and more dynamic visuals, which is particularly noticeable in PC-98 palettes.
This said, now some engineer will pop out the internet and tell me that I'm wrong. I may well be, but I used my eyes the best I could to give this game a more proper appearance. Pls don't hurt me.
So, in order to capture Zun ingenuous use of bleeding, dithering and old-style tricks in general, i went down heavy on the scripting route. I ran a vanilla neko98 emulator, which is a pretty honest emulation of Kyuhachi, and applied a heavy filter in obs featuring curve, light scanlines , a dash of feathering and lil bit of colour bleeding. The result is very pretty on my eyes. I don't own a PC98, but I do own a pentium 4 win 98 rig with a Philips 107S6 CRT monitor, and I emulated the game there too in order to achieve a plausible result.
The run is crappy, I haven't played the game for a LONG time but hey...
THE REAL BAD APPLE IS HERE!

Personalmente el arte y música de los 5 primeros Touhou me fascinan, muchos de mis OST favoritos provienen de estos juegos, sobre todo del 5.-

Me alegro que te haya gustado el gameplay. Perdón si no te sigo respondiendo en español pero no lo sé bien, aunquese hablar italiano me aiuda. The first touhou's are actually very overlooked, I agree with you. And the music are indeed bonkers: it's not a chance that Bad Apple is as a matter of fact an OST of this game, and it sounds awesome on its origin system (the pc98 i mean).
