General knowledge of hair care has come a long way since Legally Blonde came out - maybe it's because of this movie that now nearly everyone knows that you can't get your hair wet after getting a perm.

@@agenttheater5I think it’s more that so many women (and men as well) get either perms or straightening treatments where you can’t wet your hair so it’s just been common knowledge for a while now.

To prepare for her role as Elle Woods, Reese Witherspoon spent two weeks studying the behavior of sorority girls, as she did not wish to portray a stereotypical airhead sorority image. She states on the DVD commentary that they were all very kind and polite, and she enjoyed her time with them. She also observed women shopping from the café at Neiman Marcus, and attended law school for a day.

If it is ok, I just want to give a shout out to Emmett because he was the only character, besides Elle’s friends that saw her for who she was. From their first meeting, Emmett saw her kindness, compassion, and intelligence. He was willing to give her advice and just help out while everyone prejudged her.
On Legal Eagle, the lawyer said that scene on the first day would not happen. Many schools give you some leeway with assignments because you are just getting your books and access to the school’s website.

I wasn't kicked out of the class but I had the same thing happen to me. We apparently had assigned work that needed to be done before the 1st day of class and I was definitely targeted because I didn't realize/ didn't have it done. It was hidden in a bunch of packets we got and I didn't finish reading them because I got enrolled in the college last minute.

4:25 Which is also insulting to both Jackie and Marilyn. Both were stylish, well-read women who's iconic looks and fashion is still recognised today, and who both went through the ringer and deserve to be respected instead of put into categories like 'classy debutant wife to have on your arm in public even if you cheat on her' or 'dumb sexy blonde you cheat on your wife with'.

    • @a.g.demada5263

Can you explain me what Warner meant by that ? I'm french so I guess I don't understand the reference

    • @agenttheater5
      @agenttheater5 2 роки тому +16

@@a.g.demada5263 He's referring to US President John F. Kennedy's wife Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy (Onassis was added when she married the second time), nicknamed 'Jackie', a well read debutante and socialite from New York with a Bachelor in French Literature who was a brunette and was known for being fashionable, stylish, elegant and classy (not that I'd call Vivian's behaviour for most of the movie 'classy' though she's clearly upper class), and one of his mistresses Hollywood actress Marilyn Monroe born Norma Jeane Mortensen (Kennedy cheated on Jackie several times throughout their marriage but his affair with Marilyn is the most famous out of them all, though apparently he and Jackie had become a lot closer in months leading up to his assassination) the famous blonde sex-bomb movie star iconic for her hair and her voice, viewed and cast as a 'dumb blonde' though behind the camera she actually a very well read woman and was much smarter than a lot of people gave her credit for, but she also suffered from mood disorders and addictions and (though you'd never guess it when you watch her) was a very unhappy woman, she died of an overdose when she was 36.
Basically Warner is saying saying that he needs to marry a socialite brunette who comes from the 'right' family and went to the 'right' school and who'll look good on his arm in the newspaper rather than a blonde bombshell who's too 'stupid' to be taken anywhere in public and who's only there for men like him to sleep with. All in all he's being insulting to both Jackie and Marilyn, limiting them to their images rather than their actual personalities. Which means he's also limiting both Elle and Vivian to their appearance as well.

Something that a lot of people miss: when Warner asks about the costume, Elle pointedly does not throw Vivian under the bus, and just says she did it on her own.
It's Vivian fault and she's Warners fiance, but she STILL didn't tell on her.

There's a theory that Elle was Warner's side chick. It took him so little time to get engaged to Vivian, it's very possible he had been seeing Vivian while he was dating Elle.
On her first day when she ran into Warner, he was surprised she got in, and she said, "what, like it's hard?" - so much funnier when you realize Warner was waitlisted and needed his dad to call in a favor for him to get in.
Also, it was everyone's first day, and college professors expect you to have gone online, read the syllabus, and completed any assignments or reading before class, even on the first day. I'm not saying she should've been kicked out of the class, but assigning reading before the first day is a very normal thing that a lot of professors do, even in community college, let alone graduate school.

Warner can't become a senator by the time he's 30,(he's not good with research)though he did flunk his LSATS and had to have his dad pull some strings.

It's so good to see another reaction collaboration between Timothee and Clariss, especially with one of my classic favorites, Legally Blonde! I really enjoy watching Reese Witherspoon just killing it as Elle Woods, I don't think she even knew at the time how iconic her role would become! I'm glad she got great character development throughout the movie, and the whole cast did so well with their roles, and of course the David Kidney fellow should not be underestimated. I don't know what I should call this movie because it doesn't feel like a traditional romantic comedy but I love it nonetheless. Everyone thinks it's a dumb moment when Elle didn't tell Callahan Brooke's alibi, but she's actually right. If they can't create a reasonable doubt without that alibi, they're not very good lawyers. The burden of proof in a murder trial is on the prosecution. They have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you and nobody else committed the crime. All you need to do as a defense lawyer is to create doubt in the prosecution's case. An alibi is ideal, but it's the easiest way. There are other ways they can do this. Especially since many defendants don't even have alibis, like if they're home alone.

Thank you for this icon! Besides the sequel, I must recommend you check out the full Broadway musical; you can find it on UA-cam. If you want more Reese Witherspoon, I highly recommend Sweet Home Alabama, Four Christmases, and Penelope. For more early 2000s chick flicks, I must recommend The Princess Diaries 1-2, Ella Enchanted, Ever After, A Cinderella Story (Jennifer Coolidge is in this), and Never Been Kissed.

Elle is smart, hard working, genuine and determined. people think she is none of these things cause she is pretty also blonde. For some reason lots of the time people think a person can only be one thing pretty or smart or strong or whatever. As a women when you are attractive people treat you different and expect less of you, this story teaches young girls not to let anyone put them in a box. you did it too btw she is pretty so she only knows about fashion? everyone does this but we have to learn to not put anyone in a box. Because when we treat people like we only expect them to excel at one certain thing they may feel like other people are limiting or defining for them what they are capable of being. she cares about the girly things you would make assumptions about but also that is just a small part of her, she is also kind, smart and caring. She commits to her dreams even when lots of people around her don't think she belongs and should act differently to fit the box they have put her in. She is unapologetically herself

LOL, Elle couldn't go visit someone in prison under a fake name. They make you sign in and go over your ID and usually get searched, etc. She also couldn't have brought Brooke all the stuff she brought in, either. I know, it's a movie, but still.

The original ending had it end after the trial, where Emmet kisses Elle, and it cuts to a year later where she and Vivian are suntanning on the beach.
This was changed because they wanted a payoff with Warner, so they added the scene with Elle telling Warner no last minute.

While the "He's gay!!" bit hasn't aged... the _most_ gracefully, you gotta remember that this movie originally came out in 2001. We've thankfully made huge strides in the portrayal of LGBT people in media since then, although it (of course) still has a little growing to do.

    • @kuivia

Hopefully it keeps getting better though because I feel a lot of the time they put in stereotypical LGBT characters in shows and movies that just annoys the shit out of me instead of having them actually be a character that just happens to be whatever they are and that it's not their entire personality

I’m gay and I have never been offended by any gay characters in any movie or show ever made. Every demographic has been stereotyped in movies. Men, women, different ethnicities. All of them. It’s just a movie and I hate how sensitive the world has gotten. I definitely appreciate that people are much more cognizant about bigotry and stereotypes but we have gone a little too far. Not saying this comment because I disagree with what your saying but to me, the “he’s gay” aged perfectly fine. There’s nothing wrong with simply stating that someone is gay if they happen to be. It’s no big deal.

@@user-qu4yn1fm4z Oh I'm not offended by it myself, I was talking about the two of them watching being a little 😬 about it. I'm not straight, either, and I just think it's funny.
We've come a long way as far as characters in media ALSO not being straight as just a facet of their character rather that being the main or only thing about their character. There's still shallow tokenism and the "bury your gays" trope, but at least we're getting more depth than we used to. I'm still not _offended_ by it, though... just commenting on it as an observation.
Edited to add it wasn't specifically the "He's gay!" line that I'm talking about, that's just what I used to refer to the scene. I think it's the portrayal of the dude himself that some people take issue with, although I do agree that I _personally_ don't take issue with it. It's just funny!
